Dr. Ekeblad: A New Beginning: Billionaire Steamy Romance

Rate this book
“I am assuming your place?” she says, her fingers draping suggestively across the arched back of her chair. Holy Moses! I’ve had too many Jack Daniels and I have known the lady for about five minutes. Give me a second for my brain to kick in.
I only came into The Cavern about an hour ago to find a little comfort. It’s a lonely experience to create a new new town, new job, new me. Am I running away from the past you wonder? Well, yes, in a way. Frankly, the Ekeblad name is a curse. It’s a burden I have failed to live up to. My new job is starting this week and it will give me a new chance at doing it right.
A new beginning in the middle of nowhere. Far from Nashville, far from everyone who knows me. The Cavern seemed such a good idea an hour ago. As I am gathering my spirits and psyching myself up for my new identity as Dr. Ekeblad at Dren General Hospital, I just want a last night to let go and to get lost in anonymity. So, here I am. Within seconds of sitting down, I lock eyes with the silky auburn-haired woman at the bar, out on a work night with her girlfriend. She’s much too classy for this place. Call me bold or call me a fool, but I told the waitress to serve both ladies a Manhattan, on me.
Ever since the round of drinks, she’s been glancing back at me over her shoulder.
“A Manhattan, huh?” I look up from my whiskey to see her standing at my table.
“A Manhattan,” I offer a partial smile. “Would you like to sit?”
“I am here with my friend,” she shrugs, but I can see that she wants to stay. She skeptically smiles. “Okay, but only for a few minutes.”
The conversation is easy. Her laughter melodious. Her long and capable fingers tap the glass. I watch in surprise as my hands leave my tumbler and wrap around her tapping fingers. She stops talking and looks at me. My eyes are eager. I can see her weighing the proposition, as if every possible outcome is fluttering through her mind. Then her green eyes narrow, and her strawberry lips curl.
“I’ll be right back,” she says. She stands up and walks over to her friend at the bar, keeping her back to me. Her friend leans back, craning her neck to get a good look at me. Her heavily painted eyes narrow, as she studies me. I offer her a nod and courteous smile. Her lips press together, and she returns her attention to her auburn-haired friend. A few brief words are exchanged before she returns to me. “I’m assuming your place?”
I pick up my whiskey and quickly gulp the rest, setting the tumbler down with a renewed authority. “Yes. My place.”

The book starts with the fun but cliche meet-greet: boss & employee sleep together the night before they meet each other at work. I wonder how often that happens in real life. In this case, they are nurse & doctor. I was thinking about how Grey's Anatomy starts with this setup too.

I liked how the author put in the effort to make the cast of characters diverse. Two of the nurses were black. Lately, in every book I read everyone is white or no skin color is given, so white is assumed.

I also liked how detailed and realistic their days in the hospital were. We learn about the cancer patients and hope for the best. Tommy's case is especially interesting.

There were two weird sentences in the sex scenes & the word "clinch". The weird sentences were "I fill her with my rich cum" and "I slide my manliness…". Lmao.

I'm not sure why the author split the book into two halves as she could have made more money with it combined.

Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC!

A story about a nurse and a doctor getting together. They didn’t know that they were nurse and doctor when they met, it was at a bar and he send her and her friend a drink. Afterwards she went home with him and they had sex, she thought that it was a one night thing until they met at the hospital they both work at.
The two work together, she’s his nurse. They go through the first couple of days taking care of the sick pediatric patients together. They both still feel something for each other and one night after their shift she has him follow her into a closet to have sex with her.
He gets an emergency call and goes to the hospital and when she gets there she finds out that a patient that was doing great when she left the night before had passed away during the night. Before she found out she was talking to him about a voicemail about going out with him, he doesn’t want to talk about it at the time but she says later about taking Chinese over to his place.
They go around seeing patients and talking to families. One patient gets to go home so she wheels him to the elevators with his family. They go talk to another family about their son and what treatment he wants to put him one, he talks to the family for a while and let them decide what they want to do. The family is tired and the mother is upset with everything that’s going on.
That night he doesn’t want to have her bring the food over, he’s upset about the loss of his patient. He mother calls but he doesn’t answer, he throws his phone and he hears a crack. When he hears the soft knock on his door he picks up his phone putting it in his pocket before letting her in and helping her with he bags. They drink some wine and eat some Chinese before he tells her that he can’t do this, he excuses himself to take a shower and she tell him that she’ll clean up.
He goes to the room undresses, he looks at himself in the mirror before going in the shower. He lets the hot warm take him as he closes his eyes, the only thing he can see is his patients face. But he notices a draft and the shower curtain move. When he opens his eyes she’s there, kiss and he takes her turning off the water and making his way to his bed. They make love on his twin bed and afterwards they talk, he wants her to stay. He falls asleep and she goes to get a glass of water. She notices that things are gone from when was there last and she wants if he got rid of the things because of her. She winds up telling herself to stop thinking that way. He gets back to the room and notices his phone on the floor she picks it up seeing a part of a message. She puts on his night stand and starts to over think things again. She finishes the glass of water before laying back down with him covering both of them up.
Wonderful characters in an easy to read as well as great page turner. Nice sweet romantic story.

Dr.Ekeblad Mats, okay can we please just call him Dr.Hotti? Dr. Hottie is looking for a fresh start . He finds himself working at a new hospital in a new town. What exactly is Dr.Ekeblad running from. Unlike most doctors this one seems to have a very caring nature when it comes to his patients and just seems to be a very likeable character! He does not give off the vibes of having a huge ego which is so refreshing. I am interesting to see if these traits continue throughout the series and i really need to know what secret Dr.Hottie is keeping.

Tilley- A sweet oncology nurse that is trying to move on from a break up. She decides to take her friend, Faye a long time friend from nursing school out for one last night on the town before starting her new job with Tilley. Tilley chooses to take Faye to the old Cavern because it is not as popular among the hospital staff that Faye will soon be working with! Tilley catches the eye of a very attractive man who decides to buy Tilley and her friend a Manhattan. Tilley decides that it's just one night? What could it hurt so she saunters over to this very attractive man, drapes her arm around hiss shoulder and says "I'm just assuming your place"

To which the gentleman responds "yes, my place"

Both of Dr.Hottie and Tilley think this one night stand will be just that until they both go to work tomorrow and come face to face with eachother since Dr.Hottie's new job is the oncology pediatric unit and Tilley will be the nurse looking after his patients. How exactly is this going to go? Keep reading to find out!

This story seems like it is going to be the perfect workplace, doctor/nurse possibly even a little bit forbidden since it is a nurse and a doctor and I am here for it!!!

This is such a sweet novella for what looks like will be such a good hospital romance and I cannot wait to read more from Kris Holbeck! My only critique would be the name of the doctor because I can't say it 😂. I also really wish the first book wasn't a novella! Also because we can't have a romance book without talking about spice! I'm going to rate this 2 Chilli peppers on the spice scale!

Thank you so much Booksirens for giving me a copy of this story! Here is my review! I can't wait to do more! Hopefully for this same series! ❤️🥰

Fresh

It gets going simply enough. Two friends have an innocent drink to celebrate one's new job at the hospital. What could go wrong? A well-dressed man across the bar, not fitting in with the dive bar environment. We could call the mix of bourbon, jack and Manhattans the catalyst of the whole tale, bringing together two unlikely lovers.
Two people escaping their old lives, trying to start fresh, meet someone to start fresh with.
The story gets far more complicated from here as insecurities and a handful of sick children add to the mix. From this point on, it transitions from a blossoming love story into an interesting and touching story from a hospital's oncology ward. A new doctor and nurse are thrown into the ring, taking over the responsibilities of their deceased predecessor.
The author is just as good at writing the 'romantic' parts as writing emotionally-powerful hospital scenes, really tugging on those heartstrings. This book surprised me, being not what I was expecting, but heartfelt nonetheless.

As a fan of medical romance novels, I found this book to be entertaining, filled with sexual tension and drama. One of the admirable elements of this book is the author's intertwining of the medical and romantic aspects of the story. The meeting between the two main characters was the most interesting element in the very beginning and it held my attention, but I found myself wanting a bit more of the "give and take" of a slow burn romance. That's just me, however. While "Dr. Ekeblad: A New Beginning" is an enthralling read, sometimes I found it too predictable and therefore lacking a smidge in continuing to hold my interest. I didn't expect it to end like an arc, but it the ending peaks interest and leaves the reader with the sense of entering a mystery.

This book sets the stage for an exciting series. The next installment in the "Dren General Hospital: A Medical Romantic Series" holds promise for deeper and more enthralling drama. Recommended for fans of steamy medical romances looking for a compelling read that will keep them hooked from beginning to end.

Meet Mat A life of extravagance and needless luxuries A life filled with meaninglessness has consumed his past. looking to start a new chapter, leaving his old life behind. New town new job.

Tilley plans to forget the past, forget Dylan. She is focused focused on her new future, new job she has worked so hard for

Mat thought he was over the casual hook-up stage. Tilly had never really gone down that route it

As days go by emotions run high at the oncology unit at Dren General hospital. Dr Ekebald new to the hospital not only is dealing with new patients but has been informed of his new nurse… A gorgeous auburn he immediately recognises….Tilley is just as surprised.

This is an Excellent book by author Kris Holbeck. Short but sweet, filled with intensity and passion. The characters are strong and the story is well written… cannot wait to read the next chapter of Tilley and Mats story.

I didn't realise this was going to end in a cliffhanger, so be prepared. I'm presuming a book two is coming soon.
Tilley was rebuilding her life and moved in with Faye her best friend. Celebrating new job etc she meets Mat. They don't swap names or anything and both end up having a hot steamy encounter.
Tilly leaves because this isn't something she does.
Oh dear, only gets to work to meet her Dr will be Mat.
It was a good story, it was heartbreaking at the storyline about children with cancer. You get out look of how staff feel.
These two can't stay away, but Tilley is starting to notice someone else's lingering hands on Mat. Also Mat has big secrets and is on the run.
In the next book I hope to get back story of both Tilley and Mat. There is some spice too.

I did read the prequel and Faye is in it. I actually don't like Faye and don't trust her as much. We will see in next book if she really is a better person.

My first reaction to this book and its prelude, which you can get from the author's newsletter, was that it was just an excuse for sex. Then we begin to see the emotional reaction to the unpredictable nature of treating children's cancer. We want to know what happens to these people, both the patients and the staff, despite the writing. This is also the weirdest hospital on the planet--it bears little resemblance to the real world, despite the author clearly having an understanding of pediatric cancer and its treatment, plus the emotional responses from everyone involved and how they handle them. To get more stars, the author needs help from author friends or teachers to write without so many cliches. Sex in the broom closet? Drinking every night after a 12-hour shift? Are no other doctors working the overnight shift? The storyline is promising, but the writing is not there yet.

Both our hero and heroine are looking for a new beginning, but neither expected it to start just this way. It either will go down as a serious mistake or a wonderful start. Either way, it is going to be interesting.

This is book one of the series, so no issues there.

These a short erotic romance with a medical center setting. The story is well written and easy to read with solid characters that are well developed and realistic. The setting is well done as well and will be of particular interest in medical dramas. Me, I am just here for the romance. The story moves at a good pace and does involve a bit of angst, although not too much. There is also a nice bit of steam, which is quite fun. Overall, this was a nice start to the series and I am looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

Highly recommended.

Starting Over . . .

Ready to walk away from his past and start over, Dr. Ekeblad (“Mats”) heads for The Cavern where no one knows him and no one has any expectations of him. The Cavern will let him unwind, start with a clean slate, and prepare himself for tomorrow. Simply buying a lady a drink on his arrival would lead to so much more as Tilley walks over after receiving the drink and asks if he prefers his place or hers! It was that simple, and would become much more complex.

Running from his past disappointments, Dr. Mats is starting his new life at a new hospital. Tilley and her friend Faye are nurses who will be roommates. And the three of them will end up working at the same hospital. How will Tilley fit into his life now? Will they start a relationship? Or will they move in their own orbits and let their one night fade away?

I was first introduced to Dren General Hospital in the short prequel and knew I was going to love this series.

This first book is a real steamy and mysterious start to a the series. The book begins with the two characters getting together not knowing they will be work colleagues. It's a cliché meet but still cute and the chemistry is straight away apparently.

A New Beginning is a lot more than just a steamy novella though. The patient's sad stories were heartfelt and made it clear how passionate Dr Ekeblad is about his work. I love Mats and Tilley. I feel we haven't got to know them yet but I feel their relationship heating up. Plus with a cliff hanger ending there is also an air of mystery. Spice, love, friendship and drama. This has everything I'm looking for in a romance.

Tilley has moved on from a bad breakup and is starting over with her best friend in the oncology ward of a new hospital. The night before her first day, Tilley decides to go all out and go home with a handsome stranger from the bar.
To Tilley's surprise her assigned doctor is none other than Mats, the stranger from the bar.
Together they care of children stricken with cancer and the romance continues to spark between them.

The doctor-nurse trope is new for me and the story line has potential. I wish the author fleshed out the plot and added more character development. The two main characters are still strangers to me and the book has too many plot holes.

An unexpected, unplanned encounter leads to a next-day surprise. Mats is a take-charge, somewhat arrogant doctor, but we get a clear look at how, at the end of the day, he is incredibly affected by the anguish of dealing with not only cancer patients but pediatric cancer patients. Tilley is a good, experienced, oncology nurse. It’s a tough job, often knowing the patients on a more personal level, and then having the doctor step in and take charge like they’re omniscient is angering. But the two injured souls meet and can offer each other understanding and release. What’s next? What are Mats’ secrets?

I love medical romances, so a hospital romance between a nurse and a doctor is a great trope. This book has an interesting premise, but I feel like the two main characters could use a bit more development.

Both are new to their hospital, but coincidentally have met prior to working together. Both seem to be starting new at this hospital, and getting a little more backstory would be great. I'm guessing that comes the more into their story we get. I will continue on with Tilley and Mats because I have to see where they go and how it ends.

I was pulled into this story hook, line and sinker.

Talk about burning the sheets from the beginning, go Tilley girl! Only oops, second day in new job, who should walk in but the man she has been thinking of.

Mats starts his new job, leaving behind his reputation, or has he?

The medical details of this first part of the story are realistic and difficult to read.

All of the above resulted in me jumping in and reading the next part straight away.

Dr. Ekeblad is Book 1 in the Dren General Hospital series by Kris Holbeck. This is the first book I have read from this author but I can not wait to read more. This is a short book to give you a taste of what the characters are like and part of the plot line. Mats and Tilley are wonderful main characters. The book shows what it is like to be a medical professional dealing with oncology every day. I highly recommend this book to all romance readers.

This charming story is about new beginnings and all of the feelings tied up in fresh starts. Mat is a doctor that is leaving behind the life he feels he didn't live up to as his name implies. Going to the Cavern was supposed to give him the opportunity to unwind and get ready for what lies ahead. He had no idea that he would meet Tilley. Will his new beginning also bring him a love life as well.

A very intriguing and exciting novella. We don’t know much about them, yet, but Mats and Tilley are two very mysterious characters. He’s a doctor settling into a new hospital, but obviously running from something or someone. Tilley is a nurse new to the same hospital. We get bits and pieces of their pasts, but Book 2 will tell us so much more. Super quick, steamy, and enjoyable read.

Well, I read the preview sample on Amazon Kindle. Its the story narrated by an Ekebald about Faye,a reliable keeper of secrets. It tells of Faye's fashion love for boots and her social life hangouts at the bars. Well ,though it's not the full book read ,I think the medical fiction has got prospects.

Steamy Romance

Wow the handsome blue eyed Mats is a doctor you’d want to have. Blunt in his conversations with his patients and steamy with his nurse Tilley who he met before working with her. This author draws you in as soon as you start reading. I prefer to not read cuss words in a novel but it does set the characters apart and shows their strong personalities. You can picture the handsome and beautiful Mats and Tilley by the way the author describes them. An enjoyable short read. An abrupt ending that will make you want to get Kris’ next book for sure.

“Man cannot survive on cold coffee alone.”

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Insta-love is my least favorite trope and I don't like spice without a plot, so in the beginning I did not think I was going to like it. But, I kept reading and to my surprise it kept getting better and better. I did not expect to cry while reading a spicy novella but this one definitely pulled on my heart strings!

Medical professionals beware that there are some cringy moments. In the beginning the doctor was drinking alcohol and said, "My oropharynx is burning." As a medical professional, I don't know anyone who would say that unless it was said in jest.

Trigger warnings:

New job, new life, new start. It's what both Tilley and Mats are looking for, so when their paths cross--in the down-and-dirty bar where he's drinking away the past and she's toasting the future--it's maybe not the best move to head straight back to his new apartment to get fully-acquainted.

There's mutual self-disgust. Tilley's out of there fast, when she comes to her senses. She's never gone the pickup route, so why tonight, with her new job at the hospital to begin in the morning. Mats was looking to put all that behind him, the casual hook-ups weren't meant to come in the packing-cases with the rest of his baggage.

Time for both to put it behind them--except that fate has other ideas.

This is a good short-story episode of a series, with more to it than just the steamy encounters of two ships that met in the night. No punches are pulled over the heart-rending occurrences of a children's cancer ward, and the stress under which the staff operate is made clear.

Excellent work by author Kris Holbeck in the first episode of what hopefully will be many.
