A psychological story about a 6 yr old boy named Colin who experiences trauma after being bullied by schoolmates. He withdraws into himself and begins speaking with an imaginary friend named Nicky. The story follows his life through the next 7 years as he slowly comes out of his internal landscape when he discovers the world of horses and Nicky disappears. Colin works hard caring for horses so he can one day buy one of his own. A horse comes his way who needs lots of love and caring. Eventually, Colin wins ribbons at horse shows. But then tragedy happens and Nicky returns for one last message.
I enjoyed this story because I could relate to a lot of Colin's experiences about not understanding other children in childhood and being an introvert, wanting to stay away from the chaos of the world. Good story, but also sad.
The story makes it unclear whether the imaginary friend is only part of Colin's fantasy or if he's a real magical being. His mother tells stories of 'the old world' and how magic beings were a normal part of life. Maybe that's left for the reader to decide. :)
