Unlike any other pope, John Paul II has reached out, creating dialogue or creating uproar, but always striving to unite the human community. Drawing on years of personal interaction with the Pope, and on his unique understanding of the intersection of religion and politics, Flynn, with co-authors Robin Moore and Jim Vrabel, shows how John Paul II changed the papacy, perhaps forever.
This is a well-written and personalized profile of Pope John Paul II -- his character, demeanor, outlook, inspiration and how he touched the lives of so many people. The customs, events, and protocol of the Pope are also discussed. The author is a former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican.
Ray Flynn did an excellent job on writing this personal portrait of John Paul II. Mr. Flynn captured John Paul as a person as well as the pope.
John Paul II was a great pope. There should be more like him. He understood people and conditions of the world. John Paul had an encompassing human compassion and a neverending devotion to the Church. His faith in God helped to support and renew faith in other people.
He was one of the most traveled popes. He went to a multitude of countries and several times to the United States to deliver his messages. He was always, always well received wherever he went. Everyone called out "John Paul II, we love you"; and he would tell them that he loved them too.
Please read this if you get the chance, you will not regret it.
There are many books out there on St. John Paul the Great...some biographical, some zoning in mainly on his papacy, but book is none of that.
Ray Flynn writes a book of his personal experience with the Pope from the late 1960s (when the late Pope was a Cardinal from Poland) until the early 2000's. It is an account of his personal encounters as a politician, ambassador (President Clinton made him Ambassador in 1993), and as journalist.
Its interesting to read this in a different context as someone who knew about the things the Pope was talking about and getting his perspective and getting the Pope's reaction unfiltered.
This is a great book about one of the most influential religious leaders of our modern times and a very unique perspective.
