During a test flight for the world’s first warp engine, Major Noah Gantz is set to go down in the history books.

Despite years of training, the mission goes sideways, and instead of a quick trip to the moon and back, Noah's ship is transported across the universe to stars unknown.

Stranded in space and on the brink of death, Noah is rescued by a sentient starship and its captain. To save his life, the ship’s own biomatter must replace his failing cells.

Now , Noah is different. Stronger, faster… and there’s a voice in his head.

The voice of the ship itself, and its name is Kayan.

With no way to return home, Noah must adapt and rebuild his life in this unfamiliar corner of the universe. And as he does, he discovers a looming threat in the far reaches of space, growing in power, and set on capturing Noah and his ship.

Worse still, this new enemy knows about Earth. . . and it has big plans.

Mostly OK

This was not exactly what I expected from the description and preview. In some respects it was more, and in others, it was less. The storyline is detailed and complicated, nothing comes easily for either the reader or the main characters. Details and explanations arrive slowly as the story develops, but I never developed a clear sense for where the story was headed. As this installment comes to a close there is no resolution for the primary thread, and the only option appears to be to continue the series. I am undecided if I will.

Nothing uniquely special about this book

....except the author(s) managed to make it quite dull. I am not sure what's worse in this book, the dialogue between characters, the odd way the crew behaves as aliens, or the cardboard cutout personalities a lot of them have. The book took a LONG time to get moving, with the majority of the first half spent doing maintenance, chores, and other trivial tasks to maintain a living space ship. The author(s) used space chores as an avenue to introduce the motley crew of characters, their role on the ship, and paper thin backstory to convince the reader to give a damn about them. It didn't work. Backyard Spaceship this book is not. But once long thought dead cape wearing Collins came into the story, I checked out. I went through the motions to see if the book was going to end on a good note, spoilers, it didn't. I think I will skip this series.

A fun ride; parts are familiar but so much is new...

I'm guessing the author had some inspiration from the TV show "Farscape" as it follows a similar Astronaut-lost-in-space theme. That's not to say "Homeworld Lost" isn't original, because it is, with plenty of interesting twists and turns along the way. I'm particularly fascinated by Kayan. She(?) is a living ship, like Moya from the aforementioned "Farscape," but the author has developed the concept into a unique element of the narrative, with virtually unlimited potential to continue developing as both a character in the story as well as a plot device. I look forward to learning more about her in future books.

While I have enjoyed other books by this author, I'm a bit excited by this one, because this novel has the potential to become a massive franchise. While the major plot points could be wrapped up in just one more novel if the author chooses to cut it short, alternatively, it has the chops to be developed into an expanded-universe with numerous books to expand the overall tale. I look forward to reading the next one, and hope more are to come.

I tried, but I just couldn't get into it..

This is one of the most difficult reads I've encountered in a very long time. I read about a quarter of the way through it before I just gave up. I'm not even going to try to finish this book or the rest of the books in the series.

Homeworld Lost is a good read, and i may read more of this series. The characters were all described well and their personalities continued throughout the book. My only issue with this book, and it happened only a few times, several people were talking or communicating and the reader could not decipher which character was talking. The reason I stated talking or communicating is because the Starship Kayan communicates with Noah and no one else could hear their conversation. At times, Kayan communicated with italicized words, sometimes quotes, and sometimes nothing at all. This was a bit confusing to the reader. Otherwise, Homeworld Lost is a good story and a good read.

I got about halfway through this and gave up. it's not a bad premise, but between Neill Thorne's narration and a growing disinterest in the story, I gave up. This is written with the assumption that you know what's going on one jump to the next. For example, there's a lot written about how the ship changed the main character, but no real description that I could envision. It never really solidified in my mind's eye.

I don't know if I'd like this better if I were reading it on a physical page - maybe. So it's possibly not a bad story, just not interesting enough to me.

Test pilot

Interesting concepts from the point of view of a test pilot.
The mind link between the pilot and the alien spaceship reveals how concepts are sometimes hard to express what one wants to say.

Loved the book. Great story arc just beginning with a great set of characters. Enjoyed the combat and the humor sprinkled throughout. Recommended!

sometimes a book is a hit or a miss, this is just a single. Or possibly a double, Soso.

I really try to like this book and enjoy it, but I couldn’t. The book is such a slog to get through. First of all the main character is an ass. That’s the nicest thing I could say about him. He’s your typical gung ho pilot who thinks he knows everything. Then there’s the ship a living ship with no weapons or no way to protect itself. The additional characters in the book are Soso, can’t say too much about them. The action is slow and this book wasn’t for me. Maybe you might enjoy it. I could not get through the entire book only got through 50%, maybe gets better in the second half. Somebody can let me know on Goodreads. Maybe I’ll give it another try, maybe you’ll like it.

Very interesting kind of book although it’s not a strictly military science fiction work. It’s about a United Earth astronaut on his test flight to see if a new and improved version of the first ever FTL ship was going to work. This is not the first ever test. The first FTL ship test was done by Lieutenant Colonel Tate Collins. He’s been missing ever since. Not necessarily a successful flight.

So, now Major Noah Gantz was going to give it a shot in a new and supposedly improved version of this black FTL spaceship. To say he was nervous was an understatement, but he didn’t have to put up with a lot of people standing around or watching on TV. No, this was a very top secret project and no one without the proper clearance was going to see him go. No one without the proper clearance would ever know if he didn’t return, either!

Everything about the flight was going well, expect when nothing did. He couldn’t talk to anyone back on Earth since he was long gone from the Solar System. His ship wasn’t doing what was expected. In fact, it was coming apart and him with it. He soon felt his body was burning up and then he blacked- out. He wasn’t sure, but he thought he was dead.

Yet, he woke up to a female voice and a bright light in his face. She was asking if she could save his life! Turns out this was the voice of a ship, a living ship that had rescued him after his FTL ship had disintegrated. She was persistent with the request to save his life and he eventually told her to do whatever she needed not knowing what that actually meant. Later, he finds out, but and fortunately, he’s feeling better than he ever has!

After waking from the ship saving his life, he’s staring at Montow, the ship’s Captain. What he is isn’t exactly human, but he has the same general features. As time goes on, Noah comes to meet others on this strange ship. They are the crew or more like beings that the ship just happened to rescue or pickup on her way through space. And again, this is a living ship called Kayan.
There are very few of her kind in this part of the galaxy which happens to be as far from Earth as you can possibly get.

Noah finds that he has a special bond with this ship. She can talk to him telepathically, but only to him and none of the rest of the crew. They don’t know who or what he is even after he introduces himself. It doesn’t seem that they know of or about Earth or humans. Fortunately, the others in the crew are similar in appearance to humans. Grum is a Walen. He has a very long neck with eyes in his head that open and close like a camera lens, he also has two opposable thumbs, one on each side of his palm. Other than those characteristics, he appears to almost be human. But, he’s not human and Noah soon finds out that there are no other humans in this part of the galaxy or are there?

The first and most important thing he learns from Captain Montow, is that the ship is fleeing a Gavant ship. It is a heavy cruiser in human terms, but unlike the Kayan, it is armed. Yes, Noah is on a ship that is completely unarmed and doesn’t even have weapons on-board for the crew. Still, there is one crew member, Wozim, who was seven feet tall and all muscle. He was built to fight, but he was also a being of very few words. It turns out that the ship is in the Gavant Reach, a part of the galaxy ruled by the Gavant. They have a nasty habit of capturing Kayan (it’s also the kind of ship she is) and putting them in captivity. Some say they want to know more about how she travels through space. The Kayan Noah is on is very young and she doesn’t want to be captured and possibly dissected. All Noah wants is to find where Earth is an then go home. Not going to happen anytime soon.

The book is interesting and keeps the reader engaged. I think Noah is a little less serious about his situation than a normal person would be and as a military guy, he’s very act like a warrior but he is or was a pilot so they shouldn’t be expected to actually kill the enemy when it gets close-up and personal. There is also some humor in the story, but since the audience is mostly alien, they don’t understand a lot of the humorous quips that Noah throws at them.

I think I’ll continue reading this series. It’s not a bad beginning and nothing actually gets resolved in this book. So, Book 2, “Homeworld Lost: Forsaken Crown”, is available on Amazon and I’m adding it to my reading list.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of this book. It's unique and interesting. Unfortunately, instead of continuing to flesh out the characters in a realistic way, character development stops about halfway through the book, and things go downhill from there.

The villain gets introduced maybe 3/4 into the book and is so laughably 1-dimensional that I just couldn't take the story seriously any longer. Somehow he (the only other human besides the main character) took command of the most powerful alien military in the galaxy in the space of 3 years, and sold them on a bunch of promises about hopping a few galaxies back to assault and loot a single planet (Earth). The aliens supposedly look down on other races and routinely conquer and purge their populations, so yeah... somehow they forgot all that to follow this dude I guess.

The main character spends most of his time making lame jokes and running around like a headless chicken while daydreaming about his past. He continuously makes poor decisions that put his ship and crewmates at risk, but somehow they always manage to pull his butt out of the fire each time, no thanks to him. He never develops as a character past this point that I saw, but I stopped reading a little into book 2.

This seems like an episodic series aimed at YA readers. My guess is the authors are just trying to hook the reader with cheap twists and shallow characters that can be molded any way they need them to be to keep the series going and selling books. There are a few points, especially at the end, where you can tell they really contorted the story into a pretzel trying to leave things unresolved. I would rate the first half of the book a 3-4/5 stars, but the rest of it is so disappointing that I would give it negative stars overall if I could.

I know that being a class clown can be fun, but at some point it grates the rest of the class. I couldn't take the "humor" anymore and left the college (not reading the rest of the book or the series). I am out.
I guess I should have caught on earlier when the main character said he didn't take himself seriously, but I thought there would be more people than just him and like four other people on a ship. After all, the book cover has a person on a planet. After reading a couple hundred pages, he is still stuck on a planet, and I cannot take him seriously anymore.
I don't like indecision. I need a character or a ship that at least thinks they know what they want to do. Indecision by a main character, or in this case all of the characters, has always sent me far, far away. Even if the decision is wrong and they make a mistake, just decide already. If (the characters) don't care what happens to them, why should the reader?
The attempt at witty banter in every sentence or two gets tiresome. With that and constant slang like "for sure", "wait what", "no pressure", I just can't take it anymore. Its like living with a teenager or something. Maybe if there was a POV shift for a full chapter or two, I could handle the book. Not sure, though.
I liked the concept of the ship giving a part of itself to heal a human, but it just wasn't enough to keep going through with the book anymore.
I won't be continuing this series.

During the maiden voyage of a warp engine, Major Noah Gantz is flung across the universe. Rescued by the sentient starship Kayan, Noah's life is saved through bio-integration, granting him enhanced abilities and Kayan's voice in his mind. Stranded, Noah must adapt to this alien reality, while facing a powerful, Earth-aware enemy seeking to capture him and Kayan.

I enjoyed the narration, and it really made all the characters, especially Kayan (pronounced like the pepper) come alive.

Homeworld Lost delivers a thrilling 'Farscape'-esque adventure, dropping a gung-ho pilot, Noah, into a strange universe. He joins a quirky crew: the sentient, vulnerable ship Kayan; the stoic, alien captain Montow; and the eager, camera-eyed Walen, Grum. The intricate, challenging plot unfolds with gradual reveals as they flee a pursuing enemy. Humorous cultural misunderstandings and the charming pet, Scratch, add to the enjoyment. This is a detailed, engaging space opera where nothing comes easy.

An entertaining, space opera style adventure story. Started a bit slow but I've I got into it, it was am engaging page turner. Some great ideas, I particularly liked the living space ship. The space opera setting is pretty standard, lots of different aliens with various alliances, and the usual cast of misfit characters helping Our Hero. The main reason it's only 3 stars for me is the atrocious editing. Several places where the wrong word was used, eg regulate instead of relegate and dissemble where disassemble was meant - jarring and irritating! Further, there were several places where continuity was lost, the plot jumps ahead without explanation, also quite jarring. Finally, although quite good the writing style is much like many other similar books I've read, nothing special and a little mechanical. I doubt I'll continue the series.

Great Book. Full of Adventure and Excitement - Smooth Reading..A Second Farscape

If you had a chance to see Farscape and enjoyed that TV series, you will enjoy this book. The book is full of action and moves quickly. It reads easily. The characters are well developed and you get to know them over time. The plot has twists and turns. At the end of each chapter, it makes you wonder what is going to happen next. Arriving at the end of this book only makes me want to start the next book in the series right now! The book has good supporting materials that help the reader understand the book in greater depth. I definitely recommend this book if you like scifi, space adventures.... reading something that is relaxing, enjoyable, and not taxing.

I couldn't muster the energy to turn the pages any longer. Why bother? It wasn't going to improve. Like other reviewers, it felt like I was dropped into the middle of a story and missed a huge chunk of the plot. You're strapped into the fastest craft ever built - would've like to have spent sometime learning about that, but nothing. Two seconds later, it blows up (???) and he's saved by aliens. You would think this might be shocking to some people. But not to this protagonist. Just another Monday for him.
I don't like giving 2 stars because a lot of the time, it's me, not the book. Meaning, I just chose the wrong book for me I shouldn't blame the author for that. In this case, it's definitely the author, and not me. Poorly written and badly fleshed out.

Interesting concept. Noah Gantz (pilot on FTL trip that goes terrible wrong) is rescued in another galaxy by a living spaceship and becomes inextricably linked with the ship (Kayan). The ship, Noah, and the rest of the few passengers are on the run from the evil empire (Gavant Reach) of this galaxy.

The book is slow to evolve through the first half as Noah learns about his situation and his fellow passengers. The pace picks up a bit in the second half and challenges for the ship and passengers (crew) become more clear by the end of the book.

I like the book. So far it is mainly sci-fi with some hand-to-hand battles to repel borders and retain their ship and freedom. Will have to see what happens in the next book.

Fiction: most readers forget...

All aspects of a book are controlled by the author. Circumstance, tension, suspense, in works of fiction are built around suspension of belief... The power of that suspension is mostly due to the readers imaginative or associative connections to events relayed or created in authors mind. The power of 'suspension of belief' is measured and maintained by the talent of the writer. It is a thin thread often stretched thinner to push boundaries, excitement, feeling, drama, of a story without the cold shower of reality. That 'without' part is the key, the target, the objective, and reaching that goal is the 'reality' that is the domain of exceptional authors.

Worst J.N.Chaney novel

I have read most of Mr. Chaney's books loved all of them till now. The story was very convoluted and difficult to read did not keep my interest at all. I forced myself to finish it.
I doubt I will read another one in the series, maybe. This is the only series that required a large glossary to even attempt to understand what was what. It could be that it won't get better for several books. Thankfully I have Kindle unlimited for at the moment I wouldn't buy another one. Can hardly wait for the next books in his other series. I will try one more just incase it's just me

Fascinating new series

This series promises to be great and unlike anything I've read before. Noah is thrust into a wholly unexpected existence when his test flight goes wrong, but at least he has a crew of new friends to help him adjust. I found it very interesting to learn about the little understood Kayans and their technology along with Noah. The pace of revelations was just right so that it was not overwhelming. I look forward to continuing the adventure and seeing what other secrets will be revealed.

Found🐺 in Space🚀
Military🐺🗡🔫💥 Science Fiction🚀💫
Cynical test pilot, Noah🐺, is launched from Earth🌏 into the far reaches of space💫. Kayan, A living sentient ship🚀in deep space, rescues him from the debris of his ship🚀 that failed but was not a failure.
Restoring him to health, he is NOW connected mentally with Kayan🚀.
There are some alien👽 crew and several passengers aboard.
I wish descriptions of the various aliens👽 would have been better. Ends in sort of a cliffhanger. Will need to read these books in order.

I got this ebook from Amazon📚 with KU.

I've begun casting the movie

Test pilot Noah Gantz is repeating a flight that another test pilots craft seemed to just vapourize year ago.  Noah is hoping the errors have been fixed but has his doubts.

Blasted to 'somewhere in space' he is rescued and meets the crew of the ship that rescued him.

The Captain of the ship is described as having a head resembling a soup can but try as I might he keeps looking like a serious minion to me. The part of Wozim the Tyton is played in my mind by Michael Dorn (Worf with a tail!).  A fun read, looking forward to the next book.

Help me read more books

If you've watched Farscape, (especially the first episode), then you already know this story. It's practically a clone story with a few things changed to protect against copyright infringement. Otherwise, there's nothing new here. I won't be continuing with this series.
To be fair though, taken as a stand alone story, it isn't bad, (thus the 3 star rating), but the authors could at least have tried to make it something original.

Got 50% through and couldn’t any more. Really does read like Farscape fan fiction with really no originality in concepts. Kept going back pages trying to figure out where I’d missed the introduction or transition of an event and there just… wasn’t one? Constantly felt lost with the lack of continuity and annoyed with the bro-chacho ish style of writing (‘If only Mr military man Pops could see me now out here lost in the universe with aliens.’). Shallow characters, forced stereotypes. All of that can be overlooked if the prose and plot are solid, but I just couldn’t get into it.

If I could go to 3.5 stars, I would. I have to say when I started reading the story (impluse buy to be honest) for the first few pages I thought the authors were about to loose me. It never happened. An extertaining book that makes you question the protagonist's thought process sometimes, all good though. What I didn't care for was the last page exit. I get it, set the hook for the next in the series. i just thought it could have been done better. Probably the editor or publishers idea. Have a read, fun book.

Excellent sci fi adventure

The worldbuilding is fascinating, the story is thrilling, and Noah is a great character and narrator. The beginning felt a little chaotic, but Noah's life had become strange and chaotic. Scratch is wonderful, Wozim is interesting, and Ufri is frightening but fun. The entire crew is easy to love, and I'm looking forward to more adventures. There is definitely a body count and graphic violence.

Good start.

I like the newest book Mr J N Chaney and Scott Moon have wrote. It's got the feel of one out of his element trying to catch up, understanding the politics and not offering the aliens around him. I can vision all of us doing the same.
I do feel a little more information in areas needs to be done. I found myself having to read sections over or think of what they where trying to do. But, overall it was good.

Serious Page Burner!

Not the best start, but quickly grabs your attention and holds on tightly. The direction of the story is not obvious. The main character is not the ultimate, perfect, or luckiest person in the universe. He's a normal person doing the best he can. The storyline is entertaining. Once you start reading, it's tough to put down. Now I'm off to the next book in the series!

Good story line but....

The story is jerky. Jumping from one scene to another. A couple of times I had to look back in the story to see if I had missed something. There are pretty good characters and some action. Again the action is jerky. Some time should have been gone into making the story flow better. What the flashback was for is beyond me. It is a decent way to spend time but there are better books out there.

Entertaining

Maybe a bit more fiction than science, but it flows well. Characters are behinning to distinguish themselves and build cohesive personalities.
I love the wisecracking humor. I like the distinction between good guys and bad. I love/hated the betrayal. And I didn't see it coming.
Looking forward to the next installment of otherworldly adventure with our ragtag group.
