The comic book arm of the company started in 1939 as Timely Publications, and by the early 1950s had generally become known as Atlas Comics. Marvel's modern incarnation dates from 1961, with the company later that year launching Fantastic Four and other superhero titles created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and others. Marvel has since become the largest American comic book publisher, surpassing its longtime competitor DC Comics.

“Amazingly” fitting that the word is in the title — because this isn’t just a comic, it’s the birth of one of the most enduring heroes in popular culture. In just 11 tight, perfectly paced pages, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko introduce Peter Parker: awkward teenager, brilliant science student, reluctant hero. It’s a complete origin story — radioactive spider bite, newfound powers, the first costume, the thrill of fame, and that heartbreaking moment of loss that cements the timeless message: “With great power there must also come—great responsibility.”
What makes it so special even today is how human it feels. Peter’s struggles — loneliness, insecurity, bad decisions — make him more relatable than almost any superhero before him. Ditko’s art is dynamic yet grounded, and Lee’s scripting captures both the melodrama and the heart of a teenager’s world.
Sixty years later, Amazing Fantasy #15 still reads fresh, poignant, and surprisingly modern. It’s the kind of debut that reminds you why comics matter — and why Spider-Man still swings at the top of the superhero pantheon.

Brilliant!! From the start this story is captivatingly good. Yes it’s simplistic - it’s a comic book from 1962 after all - but it’s also much richer than most of its contemporary counterparts of the time. This is a superhero who is flawed from the beginning, with the odds stacked against him in life, including his own arrogance and hubris at first, but that can be forgiven under the circumstances.
Peter Parker is a maligned teenage boy who has to learn the hard way that the world is cruel but being selfish and self-seeking within that will cost you and the ones you love. Instead the answer is kindness and using what you have been given, namely his strength and ability in this case, not for your own gain but for the greater good.
The characters of Uncle Ben and Aunt May feel like a warm hug straight out the page - they are so wholesome. All the more tragic at the end when the famous devastating twist arrives.
I can’t wait to read the next issue and see how Spider-Man becomes the hero we all know today!

Here's the first-ever Spider-Man comic in print. And a legend was born!
Stan Lee was a creative storytelling genius—his creations have lived on and withstood the test of time where flashy artwork died off (e.g., Joe Madureira’s Battle Chasers, Top Cow, etc.). RIP, hero.
