3.5 stars. Loving Lieutenant Lancaster is a charming, sweet and clean Regency romance by Sarah Eden, a well-known author in the clean romance genre who usually gives her main characters personal issues that make her novels a little deeper than the norm for this genre.
Arabella is a sweet but previously emotionally abused young woman who’s been taken in by the Jonquil family (from one of Eden's longtime series) as a companion to their elderly mother. Linus Lancaster (from Eden's other multi-book series) is a former Navy lieutenant who’s haunted by the death of his older brother eleven years ago, unhappy about being the family heir, and a little at loose ends. Arabella feels like she needs to act like a servant at the Jonquil home, despite everyone's inclusiveness. And Linus ... isn't sure how to treat her, but he knows he's interested in this quietly attractive woman. Meanwhile other people are trying to pull Arabella and Linus in different directions, relationship-wise.
Fans of Sarah Eden will rejoice in her bringing together the two families she’s been writing about for several years. It’s quite the house party at the Jonquil mansion! All the excitement and drama with secondary characters is fun if you're familiar with them from the prior books, but it will lose some of its resonance if you're a new reader to the two series that come together here. Unless you're invested in the characters already, this one is just a little bland. The main plot with Linus and Arabella is rather slight on its own, so I'd advise reading at least some of the prior books (especially Seeking Persephone and Friends and Foes, the first books in these two series) before jumping into this one.
There are a couple of key subplots with some of the secondary characters left open at the end of this book, so it'll be interesting to see what happens next with them in future books.

I had to jump into this one when I learned it would bring together the Lancaster series and the Jonquil series. Can you imagine being able to attend that houseparty?? So fun! I loved seeing these two families come together, it was like a reunion of sorts. As much as I loved seeing all these characters together, I did think it took away from Linus and Arabella's story a bit. I would have liked to see them together more. Overall, it was a fun addition to the Lancaster/Jonquil series.

Oh my heart! I loved this one! Arabella and Linus find something special in each other, but their quick friendship develops into something more so slowly that I was filled with anticipation the entire book. New readers might be a little overwhelmed by all the characters in the Jonquil and Hawthorne families and their connections, but fans of the author will absolutely love seeing more about all their favorites, and it's more than just cameo appearances. There are significant scenes and subplots with Adam and Persephone, Phillip and Sorrel, Mater, Artemis, and especially the youngest Jonquil brother, Charlie. Linus's compassion for Charlie and his genuine friendship with the struggling young man showed his admirable personality and he also benefited with a stronger sense of belonging and purpose. Arabella is also struggling to find her place in new circumstances, and Linus's friendship is like a ray of sunshine in a caring but busy family. Their banter was so natural and full of humor, it was a pleasure to read. I really connected with these characters and highly recommend the book!

Ahhhh...Loving Lieutenant Lancaster is a dream come true for fans of Sarah Eden. To have the Lancasters and the Jonquils in the same home... perfect escape novel.
I love Sarah Eden's writing style. She has a way of creating as story with humor. I loved the dynamics of this book. Bringing the brooding Duke of Kielder and the flamboyant Lord Lampton in one story is sure to have tempers boiling. I love both of them for very different reasons.
But in this story, they are both secondary characters. This book focuses on the romance of Arabella Hampton and Linus Lancaster. They create their own "club" of "outcasts". They sit on the fringes of society, but don't like to be the focus of attention. They are amazing characters and I enjoyed getting to know them and their histories.
This book is a pleasure for Regency Romance lovers. I do suggest that you read the two series featuring the Lancasters and the Jonquils. You can read this as a stand-alone. But to really grasp the story helpful to know the personalities of the families.

This is fourth in a series and characters from the others (particularly the first) are almost overwhelmingly present in this one, bogging it down more than a little. You definitely want to read these in order.
Slow. Slow. Slow. Slow. Slow. This is competently written and with engaging protagonists. I very much enjoyed seeing them respond to one another and to see their affections engaged. It was very sweet and since I liked them both immensely, fun.
Unfortunately, this book is populated with approximately fifteen million other characters, each with their own troubles and passions and since the main couple can't really be in each other's company much, given the mores of the time, we see every person's trouble and/or passion twice. And that steals all the urgency from the narrative even though it serves to illustrate the virtue and kindness of both main characters. Don't get me wrong, that character illustration trick is a good thing. But it was larded on so heavily I found myself getting bored.
Add that both protagonists are being hunted (she demurely, he assiduously) by people I didn't like even a little and I found myself reluctant to come back to the story once I put it down. And since my boredom weighed so heavily, I was tempted to put it down again almost immediately on picking it up. Not a good combination.
Anyway, I loved the characters and interactions enough that I'm still giving this two stars and I'm finishing it in my head because heaven knows they're already in love and the rest is just garnish.

I absolutely love the Lancaster family! This series as well as the Jonquil family are go to reads for me. I love that the author has continued on with the different family members and letting us readers keep having fabulous books to read. My favorite part is that previous characters are still showing up in each subsequent book. I've grown connected to these characters and it makes me so happy to see that their lives are still continuing on and that they're happy. I know they're fictional. But I still love them!
I really enjoyed Linus' story. It was a sweet love story with many insecurities on different characters' parts. They had learning and healing to experience. There were plenty of humorous moments throughout this book. I loved all the moments with Adam, or the Dangerous Duke! He and Persephone have been some of my favorite characters in the Lancaster family series. So if you're like me and a fan of Adam's, then be prepared for many humorous moments with him. He's his same old dangerous self.
I think if anyone hasn't read the previous books, they should still be fine reading these books as stand alone novels. The author has done a great job of writing each book that way. But I will say that for optimal enjoyment of knowing who all the characters are, read all the books. Which means, lots of awesome reading ahead of you...hours of fabulous entertainment. But if you don't have that time and really just want to jump in, that will work too. But be warned, you'll probably want to know the back story of all these characters ;-)

I really enjoyed Linus' story. It was a sweet love story with many insecurities on different characters' parts. They had learning and healing to experience. If you love the Lancaster family and the Jonquil family, you're going to love this book, because the families collide in a house party. Some of my favorite Sarah Eden characters make significant appearances in this story and it's so much fun to revisit them and see what's going on in their lives after their own stories.
I've always been of the opinion that true love should know no bounds, no social classes, and no limits. Arabella and Linus develop a sweet friendship that quickly blossoms and sparks with chemistry. I especially enjoyed watching them interact with those around them, as they try and find their niche in both the family circles, as well as society. I loved the way Linus treated Caroline, Oliver, and Charlie. Although they are each younger than himself, he has a way of making people truly feel special. Arabella is so easy to love.
If your idea of a house party is sitting around playing whist, sipping tea, and flirting, you'll be in for a few surprises with this one. The plot is entertaining and brimming with lovable characters and interesting twists. I loved being with these families again!

I really liked Linus. He may be my favorite Eden hero so far. I love how he understands and interacts with those around him. He challenges them just enough, but not so much that it’s obnoxious. Arabella was understandably quiet, and I liked the balance she had of keeping to herself but allowing conversation when she was at ease.
There romance was so sweet and it was fun to see so many characters from previous books.

I was late to the Jonquil party and I'm late to the Lancaster party too, but it's not because I didn't want to join in on all the fun. So when I saw this on NetGalley I wanted to request it, but knowing it was #4 in a series I was hesitant because I thought I'd be lost. I asked a good GR friend, if she thought I'd be too confused jumping in by reading book #4 and she said no, the author does a good job of reminding the reader who the other characters are. So, I requested the book, was approved and happily jumped into this book that meshes a lot of the Lancaster sisters and the Jonquil brothers.
I loved this story even though at first I had a little trouble remembering who was married to whom. I know I said I loved Crispin when I read The Kiss of a Stranger, but now I love Linus too! Who couldn't love this thoughtful, gentle, funny man?
Arabella Hampton, Linus Lancaster, and Charlie Jonquil all feel, to a degree, that they don't fit in with their families but in different ways, and for different reasons. All have experienced the loss of at least one parent at a young age, and they've all recently had changes that they're trying to adjust to. All of them are trying to find their place in the new stage of their lives. As Arabella told Linus "Life is far more difficult when one is forced onto a path not of one's choosing."
Arabella is now Mater's companion, and she's not sure what her place is, as she's not really a servant, but she's also not family, although she's known them since she went to live with her Uncle and Aunt when she was very young. I felt for Arabella so much with her cruel Uncle and Aunt. A lot of Regency/Victorian stories have these poor people who are taken in to be cared for by terrible relatives and these are hers. I never understand why they take in the orphaned children if they're going to treat them so cruelly, AND they're flesh and blood! Thank goodness these people didn't have children of their own.
Linus Lancaster has recently retired from the Navy and isn't quite sure what to do with himself. He doesn't look forward to becoming a landowner and all the responsibility it entails, being the second son he didn't think the duty would ever be his. He also still mourns the loss of his older brother, Evander, even though it's been eleven years since his death, and wants to avoid the memories their estate holds. He goes to Mater's house party to keep Adam, the Dangerous Duke, from killing Lord Lampton (Philip Jonquil), or letting Adam do something to upset his wife, Persephone.
Charlie Jonquil's a little of a side story but it does involve Arabella and Linus. Charlie, the youngest Jonquil, is home from University and doesn't know what he wants to study or where he fits in with the rest of his accomplished brothers. He and Linus strike up a friendship and Linus takes him back to his estate in Shropshire.
This was such a delightful read. These two families together with all their different personalities kept me thoroughly entertained. Adam who can and does say whatever he feels, Philip the outlandish Lord who irritates Adam on purpose, Linus' matchmaking sisters--Athena and Artemis, and of course Mater. No wonder everyone wants to be a part of this family. I loved the humor that's there from the first chapter. There's so much love in this story--Arabella's love for the Jonquil family, Mater and her love for Arabella, Linus showing love and care to Caroline and Oliver, and understanding and a listening ear to Charlie. This is such a heartwarming story and sure to be one of my favorite books.

I always, always look forward to Sarah Eden's books. My heart and mind have come to know exactly how her books feel because Sarah Eden's book definitely do have a certain feel to them. It's so gentle and the words flow effortlessly.
One of the things I love best about Sarah Eden's books is how she makes characters come alive. They are real to me; flawed, hurting and sometimes broken but no matter how they come, I always end up loving them. By the end of the book I feel as though I know these characters intimately and personally. It's my favorite thing.
Linus is the perfect gentleman. He is so perceptive, patient and kind. His generous personality made me love him. And the moments with the children melted my heart. Ugh, I'm swoony just thinking about it. Anyway, Linus is the perfect man for Arabella, who needs that perceptive intuition and gentle kindness. These two! 💙
I loved that I got to see so many old friends from previous books. It lends itself to such a familial feeling.
This is a slow moving, gentle story. It flows beautifully but won't leave your heart racing. I was invested from beginning to end. What a great addition to this series. I cannot wait to read what comes next. Hopefully it will be the youngest Jonquil brother, Charlie, because he was a major player in this book and I'm all kinds of intrigued by him!

Most readers of the Jonquil & Lancaster family series will by now be eagerly awaiting every release, loyal fans, waiting for a chance to be back amongst friends. With 9 books between the two families, we know them intimately, and it truly feels like going home. Back to Falstone Castle, Lampton Park. Even though we usually get some kind of cameo appearance in each book by members of either family - 'Loving Lieutenant Lancaster' spectacularily intertwines both families on a grand scale like we haven't seen before. Every element is there. Sarah is a master of not only regency writing, but she takes you on an incredible journey of emotion. The thoughts and actions of her characters draw you in, with every aspect of a personality, be it humor, anger, sadness, joy - the list could go on. Everyone’s favourite Duke is back and performing true to form! Once we arrive in Lampton, Linus passes Arabella in a darkened hallway & the connection between them begins. His character is one of such thoughtfulness & kindness. I loved his character, the way he makes time for those who seem to live life on the fringes of the group. Both his & Arabella’s instropective ways lend to some thoughtful and touching scenes. I enjoyed their interactions with the second generation, & it enabled some great moments in the story. Their formation of a ‘club’ was amusing and clever. Along with the obvious development of their friendship, which felt easy and natural - we are taken on a journey into their past, without endless passages of 'memories'. I loved that! We discover how Arabella became such a pivotal part of the Jonquil family, without the need to question her exclusion from earlier storylines. In fact I love, LOVED the backstory, and the role the late earl of Lampton had played in the very difficult childhood she found herself in. The tender moments she shares with Mater, were so very sweet. I always appreciate when the story gets taken to Lucas, with him being an absent character, it once again shows how he has seemingly had such a significant impact on each of his children, and those who crossed his path. Even Adams references to him during his time at Lords was enlightening. I'd love to see a story written about the Earl & Mater! We are given little glimpses into their happy life, and Mater alludes to their courtship not being an easy one... please oh please Sarah write their story!!
What did I especially love about this book? The personal friendships & connections made between individuals. We get a lot more from Charlie, and how I love his character. It's clear there is more to come with Artemis, and his new kinship to Linus opened a doorway into his life we haven't previously seen. So many moments to laugh and smile. The opportunity to go deeper into real life struggles years on from earlier unions just adds to the depth and authenticity of the writing.

I can’t get enough of the Lancaster’s and the Jonquil’s!! Putting the two together had me laughing! The Dangerous Duke and Lord Lampton are so opposite and oh how they go at it! Now given the brother-in-laws the job of making sure they do not kill each other just makes me giggle even more inside!
This book is about Linus. He has retired from the Navy and really doesn’t want to do the job that his older brother, who passed away 11 years ago should be doing. Linus is a wonderful person who truly cares for others. He adores children and wants people to feel welcomed! He feels alone.

I love Sarah Eden’s quality and lovely stories, particularly her Lancaster Family Series, so I was beyond thrilled to pick up Loving Lieutenant Lancaster, and goodness it was so well-written, sweet, and utterly beautiful; I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Linus and Arabella—who find one another amidst Linus’ sisters’ schemes to matchmake at a house party—were the perfect couple. Linus struggled to find who he was and what to do with his life and the opportunities given him, while Arabella was searching for someone to love and to love her in return. Both were good people who, despite the difficult experiences of their past that had wounded them, were not bitter. I really sympathized with their struggles of feeling lost and out of place, and thoroughly enjoyed their journey of overcoming these feelings together in order to find their place, particularly their place with one another. I also loved the creativity of how the ancient myth of Linus was woven throughout the development of their sweet romance. So clever.
It was wonderful witnessing the development of not just our beloved hero and heroine, but the multiple secondary characters; the interactions between the characters from the Lancaster Series and the Jonquil Series were absolutely perfect. The banter was witty and fun, while also including a plethora of tender and cute moments; I especially enjoyed seeing Adam with his son Oliver, adorable Caroline Jonquil, and Linus’ interactions with the children. These families are so developed and truly feel alive; whenever I read about them, I truly feel I’m reading about friends.

This book is an absolute dream come true for Sarah Eden fans! The Lancasters and the Jonquils in one glorious book. I absolutely loved this book. Every page is a treasure. The writing is flawless, the characters are fantastic. Each of these characters holds a special place in my heart, and to have them in one book was wonderful. There is a particular paragraph on page 55 that shows how well the author truly knows her characters and what a talented author she is. Arabella was fabulous and instantly likable. Linus too, and he has a heart of gold. There are so many enduring and sweet moments that had my emotions on high, all the while leaving me smiling also.

This book is everything!! Phillip and Adam, perfect!! Charlie and Artemis, perfect! Linus and Arabella, perfectly perfect. Nothing could have been more perfect than joining these two families together. I ship Charlie and Artemis so hard and super super hope that my hopes and dreams for them wont be shattered!! I am gushing but I loved this book SO. MUCH.

Arabella Hampton was orphaned at the age of 6. She grew up orphaned, unloved and unwanted by her uncle and his first wife. Since the death of his first wife and subsequent remarriage, Arabella's family has made it clear she is an unwanted burden. Arabella longs for the carefree happy moments when the Jonquil brothers let her join in their play, but most of all she aches for the kindness of the previous Earl of Lampton. He dried her tears and helped her be brave. He was always kind and loving but when Arabella asked if she could live with him and his family, her beloved Earl broke her heart by informing her family stays with family. Now the Dowager Countess has asked Arabella to come to Lampton Park to be her companion. While the Dowager is kind, it only confuses Arabella who is unclear about her place. She is determined to be the best possible companion so she doesn't get sent home in disgrace. Arabella is drawn to the handsome Lieutenant with curly blond hair and green eyes but she knows her place and it's not with him. He certainly can not love her and even if he did, he is so far above her in station, he could never marry her. She'll enjoy this moment and make the memories last forever. Lieutenant Linus Lancaster, late of His Majesty's Royal Navy, has retired and returned to land and the estate that is not rightfully is. He feels rudderless and adrift on land especially as the role of heir was not supposed to be his. His older brother, Evander, was the one born to be the heir but now Evander is dead and their father's estate devolves upon Linus. How can Linus manage his estate all alone when memories of his brother haunt him? When Linus is invited by his sisters and brothers-in-law to attend a house party at the estate of the Earl of Lampton, he goes along to keep Adam from killing the young Earl. There he is charmed by a beautiful young lady who confuses him. Is she family, friend or servant? No matter her status, Arabella makes Linus laugh and he finds himself increasingly drawn to her company. He also discovers his own place in the hierarchy of young men while talking to another younger brother who feels lost in his own family. Will Linus find himself and figure out where he belongs? Can he convince a certain young lady she belongs by his side?
I had been eager to read this story since a reference to "Minus" and references to Arabella in the Jonquil books. I had to start this right away after finishing Daphne's book. I was curious to know how Daphne was doing as much as I was about Linus and Arabella. Sadly I was disappointed in this novel. The plot is almost the same as Daphne with way too much drawn out angst. I found myself growing bored and keyword searching for mentions of any of the Jonquils who were at the party. There are more Lancasters than Jonquils but not Daphne and James. We have Mater, Philip, Sorrel, Charlie and brief appearances by Jason, Mariposa, Layton, Marion and the children. While I know what happens to them, I'm always eager to see what witty bon mots Philip has to toss off. He plans this party to cheer up Sorrel. (This one takes place between For Love or Honor and The Heart of a Vicar). This story doesn't really add anything to the Lancaster characters' stories. This story is also the most overtly thematically Christian of the Lancasters series.
The theme of this novel is being seen, a popular theme for this type of novel, especially one by Sarah M. Eden but coming right after Daphne's story with the exact same theme, it feels redundant. All the men have dad issues and all the women have family trauma. OK I get it. Arabella is even more bland and boring than Daphne. Daphne is loved by her family even if she feels unappreciated at times. Arabella isn't loved by her family. Her uncle and aunt are emotionally abusive and a little bit physically abusive as well. Arabella desperately wants to be loved and yet when someone does love her, she doesn't understand and doubts his intentions -which he made perfectly clear!
Arabella walks off her pain with endless walks around the countryside. The more she hurts, the more she walks. She was a child when Lucas Jonquil died and while she has very fond memories of him, she felt rejected in her child mind and is hurt by that rejection. Her memories of him are bittersweet. She's been on the outside looking in and hasn't seen much of the Jonquil boys since they grew up but Charlie seems to regard Arabella like a sister and is comfortable with her. The Earl's kindness helped Arabella endure her family's abuse. She felt brave and leaned into his strength when her courage failed. Now he's gone and Arabella feels like she's been struggling ever since.
Arabella wants to be loved so badly, she settles for making herself necessary and useful. Unlike Fanny Price (Mansfield Park), she WANTS to fetch and carry because she feels she owes Mater and needs to earn her keep. Arabella just fades into the background and keeps herself to herself until someone remembers she's there and they need to include her. While Arabella lacks Fanny Price's firm convictions (she isn't tested in the same way), she has the advantage over Fanny for me because Arabella has a sense of humor. I liked the scenes when she was with Linus and they shared private jokes about being in an outsiders club. That was cute and showed an attraction beyond physical. Arabella has been so abused, she can't see herself as being of value to anyone, which is sad, but I wasn't in the mood for reading about that kind of trauma.
She is aware that one man at least is interested in marrying her but I don't think he sees her or gets her. Arabella is helpmate material and will make a conformable wife. However, he does feel protective of her, being a friend and a neighbor for so long but I think that kind of marriage would make Arabella shrink into herself and shrivel away. She needs Linus who makes her laugh and brings her out of her shell. For some reason Arabella feels comfortable with Linus right away and share her true personality with him, something she doesn't do with just anyone. She can see that Linus is a lovely man. He takes an interest in small children and helps Caroline feel less shy around strange adults and make a new friend. Linus also takes a struggling young man under his wing. If only he weren't so angsty internally, he would be a paragon of virtue, a prince among men. He needs to sort himself out before he can propose to Arabella.
Evander Lancaster died a long time ago but Linus feels his brother's presence everywhere, especially in their father's home where they grew up. Evander was Linus's last link to home and the family he left behind when poverty sent him to sea. Without Evander Linus feels like nothing is the same and nothing will be. Cue LOTS of angst! Linus has some PTSD from watching his brother get shot and probably everything else he's seen. He misses his older brother and is suffering from imposter syndrome. Evander sounds a lot like Stanley Cummings, Mater's brother. Wise, helpful and a loving brother. Evander made Linus promise to take care of the family but Linus doesn't know how he can do that without his older brother to advise him. The girls, except for Artemis, are settled, and she is happy living with Persephone and Adam during the Season. Maybe Her Brattiness Amy March the prequel can go live with him in the country for the summer. Artemis will be the center of attention there and can get to know her big brother better. Linus thinks Artemis has more kindness in her than she lets on and she's actually hurting inside but can't quite figure out why.
Persephone has really grown on me. She's fierce and protective of her family. It's HER gibbet, not Adam's! She's very fond of HER gibbet. Adam and Persephone's connection has deepened over the years and everyone, except Adam, seems to have forgotten he bought her and then abandoned her. Persephone is more lighthearted now she's happy in her marriage and content in motherhood. She's a loving mother to little Lord Falstone. Adam has mellowed a tiny bit too. He still tries to push people away so he doesn't get hurt again but he loves his family deeply. Who would have expected the Dangerous Duke to be a Doting Dad? He goes a little overboard at one point though. Oliver is cute. He's a little Dukeling like his father but has enough of his mother in him that I think he will grow up to be a kind, caring gentleman, if a little reserved. He doesn't make friends easily but he takes to Caroline Jonquil and allows Arabella to care for him as well.
I don't like Athena and Artemis. They're busy trying to make a match for Linus who doesn't wish to marry anyone right now, let alone someone he doesn't love. They completely misjudge who would be right for him and can't see what his heart wants. Harry Windover is still funny and lighthearted. He's a good foil for Adam but he doesn't really serve much of a purpose in the story. I was disappointed Daphne and James are MIA. It seems Lord Techney has died and James taken up his inheritance.
Charlie Jonquil is lost in his own family. He doesn't understand his role, his brothers don't have time for him or want to tell him anything. (To be fair, Philip is dealing with a lot Charlie isn't aware of and some he may have picked up from overhearing conversations.) This story sets up the premise for Charming Artemis but I didn't want it here. Charlie somewhat helps Linus figure out what he wants out of life. I think Linus enjoys mentoring Charlie and passing on the wisdom and advice Evander gave to Linus. Charlie and Artemis become sworn enemies in this novel. Charlie can't stand her endless prattle and haughtiness and both of them engage in insults that cut right to the heart of their internal struggles. That hurts but neither will admit it. Somehow, Charlie is at fault for not treating a lady right. It's one more thing he feels he's missing out on without a father- someone to teach him how to treat a lady. I think Mater is doing a fine job of that on her own. All her boys adore her and the older boys have learned how to treat ladies right.
Mater is busy being hostess and trying to make Arabella comfortable. I think there's way too many people for her and she can't focus on Arabella right now. There's a dramatic plot point about Mater I knew the outcome of but it still made me gasp and keep turning pages.
It was strange to have Sorrel referred to as Lady Lampton. I always forget Philip is officially Lord Lampton and Mater is the Dowager Countess (she still has her own title though.) Arabella is not filled in on Sorrel's backstory or the relationship between Philip and Sorrel. Sorrel is acting silent and more withdrawn than usual. (Spoiler in case you haven't read all the Jonquils and don't wish to Arabella can see things about Philip and Sorrel's relationship that Sorrel hasn't figured out yet. She loves him dearly but he worries she isn't happy. Sorrel didn't realize that and I think their relationship will be stronger than ever now.
Philip is his usual jovial self until Adam sticks his foot in where it doesn't belong. Adam assumes things about Philip and Sorrel's marriage that are completely untrue and Philip can not handle the insult to his wife. (Spoiler for Friends and Foes Adam has a sense of humor with Persephone. It's cute to see them joking together but he can't handle Philip's foppishness. He also insults Philip's character and for that I do think he needed to be called out. He knows NOTHING about Philip and yet Adam prides himself on being present in the House of Lords for every vote. Lucas Jonquil, the previous Earl of Lampton, taught him that and he insults Philip because he feels Philip isn't honoring his late father's memory. Um hello again why has no one seen how much of a burden being the head of the family is on Philip? Only Sorrel saw it and Marion picked up on it as well. Philip is really, really exceptionally good at hiding his feelings.
I was happy to read Caroline informing Linus that "Chasin's butterfly" makes him happy so he doesn't get so frustrated anymore. I hope HE continues to make HER happy so she doesn't have to suffer anymore. I do like her second best after Sorrel. They don't have an on page appearance but Linus observes Jason trying to speak Spanish for Mariposa.
There are a few random new one-off characters visiting for the house party. Lady Belinda lacks a sense of humor and never smiles. The Misses Romrell have zero personality. A pretty young widow, Mrs. Blackbourne, has her sights set on Linus. She is very persistent! He better watch out. We have met Dr. Scoresby before in the Jonquils series but he has a larger role in this novel. He's an efficient doctor based on the medical knowledge available to him at that time. He seems to lack bedside manner at times (but is good with the children) and doesn't quite pick up on social cues. He's not a bad person but he's not Lucas Jonquil or one of his boys. We meet the Nappers ( The Best-Laid Plans) for the first time. They seem like a nice family. The oldest girl, who apparently is not Ellie, is shy and uncomfortable. The other two seem young and silly. Poor Charlie better watch out because the eldest is earmarked for Linus and one of the younger girls for Charlie! Even though he's too young and academically ambitious for marriage.
I want to reach through the pages of this book, grab the Lancaster-Boyces, Arabella and the younger Jonquils and send them all to therapy! Philip and Sorrel are my favorite couple. I enjoyed their verbal sparring and how swoony he is in unguarded moments. I am glad to have read the whole series but also now need to read something funny and lighter.

I think Linus enjoys mentoring Charlie and passing on the wisdom and advice Evander gave to Linus. Charlie and Artemis become sworn enemies in this novel. Charlie can't stand her endless prattle and haughtiness and both of them engage in insults that cut right to the heart of their internal struggles. That hurts but neither will admit it. Somehow, Charlie is at fault for not treating a lady right. It's one more thing he feels he's missing out on without a father- someone to teach him how to treat a lady. I think Mater is doing a fine job of that on her own. All her boys adore her and the older boys have learned how to treat ladies right.
Mater is busy being hostess and trying to make Arabella comfortable. I think there's way too many people for her and she can't focus on Arabella right now. There's a dramatic plot point about Mater I knew the outcome of but it still made me gasp and keep turning pages.
It was strange to have Sorrel referred to as Lady Lampton. I always forget Philip is officially Lord Lampton and Mater is the Dowager Countess (she still has her own title though.) Arabella is not filled in on Sorrel's backstory or the relationship between Philip and Sorrel. Sorrel is acting silent and more withdrawn than usual. (Spoiler in case you haven't read all the Jonquils and don't wish to Arabella can see things about Philip and Sorrel's relationship that Sorrel hasn't figured out yet. She loves him dearly but he worries she isn't happy. Sorrel didn't realize that and I think their relationship will be stronger than ever now.
Philip is his usual jovial self until Adam sticks his foot in where it doesn't belong. Adam assumes things about Philip and Sorrel's marriage that are completely untrue and Philip can not handle the insult to his wife. (Spoiler for Friends and Foes Adam has a sense of humor with Persephone. It's cute to see them joking together but he can't handle Philip's foppishness. He also insults Philip's character and for that I do think he needed to be called out. He knows NOTHING about Philip and yet Adam prides himself on being present in the House of Lords for every vote. Lucas Jonquil, the previous Earl of Lampton, taught him that and he insults Philip because he feels Philip isn't honoring his late father's memory. Um hello again why has no one seen how much of a burden being the head of the family is on Philip? Only Sorrel saw it and Marion picked up on it as well. Philip is really, really exceptionally good at hiding his feelings.
I was happy to read Caroline informing Linus that "Chasin's butterfly" makes him happy so he doesn't get so frustrated anymore. I hope HE continues to make HER happy so she doesn't have to suffer anymore. I do like her second best after Sorrel. They don't have an on page appearance but Linus observes Jason trying to speak Spanish for Mariposa.
There are a few random new one-off characters visiting for the house party. Lady Belinda lacks a sense of humor and never smiles. The Misses Romrell have zero personality. A pretty young widow, Mrs. Blackbourne, has her sights set on Linus. She is very persistent! He better watch out. We have met Dr. Scoresby before in the Jonquils series but he has a larger role in this novel. He's an efficient doctor based on the medical knowledge available to him at that time. He seems to lack bedside manner at times (but is good with the children) and doesn't quite pick up on social cues. He's not a bad person but he's not Lucas Jonquil or one of his boys. We meet the Nappers ( The Best-Laid Plans) for the first time. They seem like a nice family. The oldest girl, who apparently is not Ellie, is shy and uncomfortable. The other two seem young and silly. Poor Charlie better watch out because the eldest is earmarked for Linus and one of the younger girls for Charlie! Even though he's too young and academically ambitious for marriage.
I want to reach through the pages of this book, grab the Lancaster-Boyces, Arabella and the younger Jonquils and send them all to therapy! Philip and Sorrel are my favorite couple. I enjoyed their verbal sparring and how swoony he is in unguarded moments. I am glad to have read the whole series but also now need to read something funny and lighter.

The Lancasters and the Jonquils together! Yay!! I have read all of the books in the Lancaster series and in the Jonquil series, and I love these two families! Having them come together in a book was a dream come true. And it lived up to the dream!
At the heart of the book is the story of Linus and Arabella. It was wonderful to get to know Linus better! He is intuitive, unselfish, hard working, and great with kids. He is quite a catch! Arabella is unassuming and kind. She has such a tender connection to the Jonquils. I loved Linus and Arabella together! They were perfect for each other.
Now...Adam and Philip. I must admit that seeing their interactions was what made me the most excited about a book including both families. Oh, my! Did that ever live up to expectations! I also loved seeing or hearing about other members of the families. I just love them all!!
You don't have to read all of the books in the two series to enjoy this one, but I would recommend reading at least one of the other books in the Lancaster series, preferably Seeking Persephone, so that you know Adam and understand more about him and his title as the Dangerous Duke, and reading Friends and Foes in the Jonquil series so that you know Philip well. However, if you read this book first, you'll get to have some great "ah, that's why that happened" moments as you read the other books in the two series. And trust me. You'll want to read the other books!

I so enjoyed this story! Mixing the Lancasters more with the Jonquil family. This is not really a stand alone novel. Reading the Lancasters and Jonquil line of books before this one is a really good idea. I received a book mark from her signing that gives the reading order of each, I'll put that at the bottom of my review. This is the story of Linus Lancaster and Arabella Hampton. A very sweet story of two lost people trying to find there place in the family and world. The banter between them is so great. It is a believable story line with all the right elements of a great regency read. Very Chaste.

Linus was awesome. I seriously love his character. Arabella was really likeable too. The love story was sweet. I loved that so much of this story included the Jonquil family, as well as Persephone, & Adam. It was great to "catch up" with them, & to get to know Charlie Jonquil & Artemis Lancaster.

Almost from the beginning of this book, I was grinning. It felt like Sarah M. Eden had gifted her fans with the very best kind of thank-you. She took all our favorite characters, the Jonquil and Lancaster families, and put them together at last. We had the Dangerous Duke, Flip, Sorrel, Athena, Persephone, the sweet children, almost everyone was there! I love these characters and seeing them go through the years, seeing the joys and heartaches in their lives, just made me love them more. I want to reread ALL the books!
But this book is so much more than that. There is such a masterful weaving of emotion all through the story, and a build of the characters that had me wishing I could reach out and hug them at times. Arabella's emotions brought my own continually to the surface. But as always, Sarah knows just how to pull at our heart-strings one moment and then gift us with the best kind of laugh the next, without ever cheapening the emotions.
I adored this book. I stayed up almost all night to read it. And I've no regrets.

Loving Lieutenant Lancaster (The Lancaster Family #4) by Sarah M. Eden is a Regency romance where Ms. Eden has the two families (Lancasters & Jonquils) whose individual series are written by Ms. Eden gather for a two week house party! Included in this house party are a young retired Naval officer, Lt. Lancaster, and a lonely young woman, Arabella Hampton, who being “the unwanted and unloved charge of a cruel aunt and neglectful uncle” has now become the lady ‘s companion of the dowager countess of the Jonquil family at Lampton Park, the location of this delightful house party.
Both characters must deal with ghosts of their pasts, but when they meet, smiles and laughter occur!
This is the first book that I have read of either series. Thus, I may not have appreciated all of the nuances present, but I thought this book was repetitive and wordy. It did keep my interest as the characters are quite entertaining, and Lt. Lancaster is extremely handsome and has excellent qualities. 3.25 stars.

I seriously love the Lancaster family. Linus has endeared me to them even more. He has such a good heart. Great to catch up with characters like Adam and Persephone, the Jonquil family and learn a little more about Charlie and Artemis. Book shelf worthy.

CONTENT WARNINGS: some heavy emotional topics (such as past character death), a character pretty severely injured, and a mild fight-scene. I'd personally recommend for ages 11 and above.
As a sidenote, I kept this review very brief as since I adore these novels so much, and they are the literal epitome of comfort and joy for me, I find it very difficult to be objective regarding them.
Loving Lieutenant Lancaster was another lovely and lighthearted romance from one of the queens of clean regencies, Sarah M. Eden. Though it didn't seem to pack a punch as much of her other novels did, as it felt like it lacked a significant spark in the romance whereas the others always kept me on my toes, I thoroughly enjoyed it all the same. I think the true attraction when coming into this book, however, is not the romance-- it's the family dynamics. In this book, we see an almost Avengers: Infinity-War-like culmination of our two favorite resident families, the Lancasters and the Jonquils, and all of the stunning and hilarious interactions that ensue. And truly, they were the shining light. Seeing Adam and Philip interact was perhaps the funniest thing I've ever read, and it also helped develop those characters and those around them a great deal, too. I think most of the reason why this book seemed to lack the entertaining romance that all of Eden's other books do is because there was hardly any drama between the love interests. They met each other, fell in love, had a feeeew small bumps, and then got married. It was simple, and lovely at that, if not a bit repetitive to some of Eden's other romances. However, it was a serene change of pace, one that I did enjoy, and I loved Linus and his Arabella as well. They're both such sweeties, and Linus is absolutely attractive as a male lead and all-around a wonderful character.
