মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল (Bengali)

Muhammed Zafar Iqbal (Bengali: মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল) is one of the most famous Bangladeshi author of Science-Fiction and Children's Literature ever to grace the Bengali literary community since the country's independence in 1971. He is a professor of Computer Science & Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Before that, Iqbal worked as a research scientist in Bell Communication Research for six years until 1994.

Birth and Family Background:
Iqbal was born on 23 December 1952 in Sylhet. His father, Foyzur Rahman Ahmed, was a police officer. In his childhood, he traveled various part of Bangladesh, because of his father's transferring job. Zafar Iqbal was encouraged by his father for writing at an early life. He wrote his first science fiction work at the age of seven. On 5 May 1971, during the liberation war of Bangladesh, the Pakistan's invading army captured his father and killed him brutally in the bank of a river.

Education:
Iqbal passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1968 and HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1970. He earned his BSc in Physics from Dhaka University in 1976. In the same year Iqbal went to University of Washington to obtain his PhD and earned the degree in 1982.

Personal Life:
Iqbal married Dr. Yasmeen Haque in 1978. Yasmeen is the Dean of the Life Science Department, Head of the Physics Department, Provost of the Shohid Janoni Jahanara Imam Hall and a researcher at SUST. They have two children - son Nabil and daughter Yeshim. Yeshim translated the book Amar Bondhu Rashed (Rashed, My Friend) written by her father. Iqbal's elder brother, Humayun Ahmed, was the most popular author and film-maker of Bangladesh since its independence. Humayun died after a nine-month struggle against colorectal cancer on the 19 July 2012. His younger brother, Ahsan Habib, is the editor of the satirical magazine, Unmad and one of the most reknowned cartoonist of Bangladesh.

Academic Career:
After obtaining PhD degree, Iqbal worked as a post-doctoral researcher at California Institute of Technology (CalTech) from 1983 to 1988. He then joined Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), a separate corporation from the Bell Labs (now Telcordia Technologies), as a Research Scientist. He left the institute in 1994 and joined the faculty of the Department of CSE of SUST.

Literary career:
Iqbal started writing stories from a very early age. Iqbal wrote his first short story at the age of seven. While studying in the Dhaka University Iqbal's story Copotronic Bhalobasa was published in a local magazine. But, a number of readers at that time felt that the story was based on a foreign story. To answer this allegation, he later rewrote the story and published the story in collection of stories named Copotronic Sukh Dukkho. Since then he is the most popular writer both in Bengali Science-Fiction and in Juvenile Leterature of the country.

Other Activities and Awards:
Zafar Iqbal won the Bangla Academy Award, the highest award in literature in Bangladesh, in 2004. Iqbal also played a leading role in founding Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad. In 2011 he won Rotary SEED Award for his contribution in field of education.

বইয়ের নিউরাল কম্পিউটার, বেজি এই দুটো গল্প পড়ে আমি মারত্মক ভয় পাইছিলাম। হাত পা কেপে উঠেছে আমার। যতবার পড়ি প্রত্যেক বার আমার ভয় লাগে। চিড়িয়াখানা আর স্ক্রীন সেভার গল্প পড়ে আমার ভয় না লাগলেও একটা অস্বস্তি হয়েছে। এখন পড়েও ল্যাপটপ আর স্ক্রীন সেভার এর দিকে তাকাতে ভয় লাগে। নিশির জন্য ভালোবাসা তা খারাপ লাগে, কষ্ট লাগে। একটি মৃত্যুদন্ডের ক্ষেত্রেও এক । ভালো লাগবেই এই বই, কারণ সাধারন সায়েন্স ফিকশন্স থেকে সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা গল্পগুলো।

এ যাবতকাল পর্যন্ত আমার পড়া জাফর ইকবালের লেখা অন্যতম সেরা সাই-ফাই মনে হয়েছে বেজি গল্পটাকে। দুর্দান্ত এক ক্রিয়েচিং থ্রিলার ঘরানায়ও পড়ে গল্পটা। সন্ধ্যাবেলায় পড়ার সময় ভয়ে কাঁপাকাঁপি শুরু হয়ে গিয়েছিল। আমাদের দেশে যোগ্যতাসম্পন্ন নির্মাতা, অভিনেতা থাকলে দেশীয় পটভূমিতে দারুণ একটা সাই-ফাই থ্রিলার বানিয়ে ফেলা যেত।

একটা সময় ছিল তখন আমি খুব জাফর ইকবালের সায়েন্স ফিকশন আর কিশোর উপন্যাস গুলো পড়তাম৷ এখন সেরকম নতুন বইগুলো আর পড়া হয় না। এটা আমি অনেক আগেই কিনেছিলাম। কিন্তু পড়া হয়ে ওঠে নি। হঠাৎ বইয়ের ভেতর পেয়ে ই পড়তে নিয়েছিলাম৷

যাইহোক বইটা সায়েন্স ফিকশন । প্রযুক্তি বা জ্ঞান বিজ্ঞান এর অপব্যায় ই সবগুলো গল্পে দেখানো হয়েছে। জ্ঞান বিজ্ঞান এর অপব্যবহার অনেকটা মনগড়া ব্যবহার কত ভয়াবহ রূপ ধারন করে সেটা একটু হলেও অনুধাবন করা যায়।
নিশির ভালোবাসা, স্ক্রিন সেভার, একটি মৃত্যুদন্ড, নিউরাল কম্পিউটার, চিড়িয়াখানা এবং শেষ গল্পটি হলো বেজি৷
নিশির ভালোবাসা:যেখানে দেখানো হয়েছে মানুষ মৃত্যু কে জয় করে নিয়েছে এবং তারপর কেমন হয়েছে পৃথিবীর অবস্থা।
স্ক্রিন সেভার: যেখানে ইন্টারনেট কিভাবে মানুষকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করার মতো একটি গেম তৈরী করে ফেলে এবং তার পরবর্তী কাহিনি
নিউরাল কম্পিউটার: এটা অনেকটা ভয়ংকর। অনেলগুলো মানুষের মস্তিষ্ক এর বুদ্ধিমত্তা দিয়ে একটি কম্পিউটার তৈরী এর মতো ব্যপার।
একটি মৃত্যুদন্ড: এমন এক পৃথিবী যেখানে অপরাধী মরে গিয়ে ও অপরাধের সাজা ভোগ করে।
চিড়িয়াখানা : পার্সোনালি এটা সবচেয়ে জঘন্য লাগছিল।
কত ঘৃন্য কাজও মানুষ করে বা করতে পারে অনেকটা সেরকম এর ই বহিঃপ্রকাশ৷ মস্তিষ্ক বিকৃত অনেক মানুষ এমন সমাজে ভালো সেজে ঘুরে বেড়ায় হয়তো। যাদের কোনো বিবেক থাকে না আর খুব কম মানুষ ই ওদের আসল সত্যি টা জেনে ফেলে৷ আর সেটা সুখকর কিছু কখনো হয়না।
বেজি : এক পাগলা ডাক্তার এর পাগলামি এর ফসল জিনোম চেন্জ হওয়া কিছু বেজি৷কিন্তু লাস্টের অংশ টা খুব বেশি সুন্দর হয়নি বলে আমার মনে হয়।

চমৎকার একটা সংকলন। জেনেটিক ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং নিয়ে লেখা "বেজি" দুর্ধর্ষ, গল্পের চরিত্র, পরিবেশ, কাহিনি সব মিলিয়ে মুগ্ধ করার মত। সেরা চরিত্র জয়ন্ত। অন্য গল্পগুলোও বেশ ভালো।

ওনার এই বইয়ের সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী দিক হচ্ছে contextualization. প্রায় সব গল্পই মনে হয়েছে ছায়া অবলম্বনে লেখা। আর বেজি গল্পটিতে কয়েকটি অসঙ্গতি আছে। আর প্রথমদিকে গল্পটা অকারনে প্যাঁচানো মনে হয়েছে। সবের উপরে মিলিয়ে টেনেটুনে চলে আর কি। আমি হলে বইটা পুরান বইয়ের দোকান থেকে কিনতাম অথবা নতুন কিনে থাকলে সেখানে বেচে দিতাম অথবা ধার নিয়ে পড়তাম অথবা পিডিএফ পড়তাম।
অন্যদের কথা জানি না তবে আমি পয়সা খরচ করে এই বই কিনতাম না।

মূল গল্প বেজি ন্যাকা ন্যাকা সব ডায়লগ আর বিরক্তিকর কাজকর্মে ভর্তি। সিরিয়াস সারভাইভাল হররে জোর করে কমেডি ঢুকালে যা হয় আরকি। জয়ন্ত, নিয়াজ, শ্রাবণী এই চরিত্রগুলো কথায় কথায় এত জোর করে ফান ঢুকাচ্ছিলো যে ফানের ফানটাই নাই হয়ে গেছে। বাদবাকি গল্পগুলোও মাঝারিমানের, স্ক্রিন সেভারটা তাও কিছুটা চলে।

গল্পগুলো চমকপ্রদ, উপন্যাসটা চলনসই। প্লট ভালো ছিল, আরো ভালোভাবে শেষ করা যেত। এন্ডিংটা আগে থেকেই বুঝতে পেরেছিলাম। নিউরাল কম্পিউটার সবচেয়ে বেশি ভালো লেগেছে।

এক কথায় বলা যায় যে বইটি ভালো ছিল... কয়েকটি গল্প ছিল একেবারে গা শিউরে ওঠার মতন... সবথেকে ভালো লেগেছে "স্ক্রিন সেভার" নামের শেষের গল্পটি... না জানি কবে AI আমাদের উপর এভাবে ঝাপিয়ে পড়বে...

Nishir jonno valobasha
Science finds a way to make human beings immortal. After two thousand years and after few of the controlled elimination of humans to evade the crisis due to the excess of humans, one night ron and nishi hears a siren. There’s a bulletin that people should kill each other to reduce the population of the earth to a half. All the memories of murders will be removed from people’s brains by the morning.

Ron, the loving life partner of Nishi, kills her with no anger, hatred or vengeance. Ron only had love for Nishi and the earth.

Neural computer
Two friends make a neural computer. The computers processor is run by twelve genetically engineered children by multiplying the power of their brains.
However, their identities are kept secret from them so that they don’t engender any rebellious behaviour out of identity crisis.

When the Neural com vis a vis the network of 12 children are asked about the future prospect of the neural com itself, they want access to the info which has been kept hidden from them. The two friends deny the access and abort the ques but while trying to exit, find the heavy sy door locked. The network of children want to know more about their differences from normal humans and proceed with surgical knives towards the two friends.


Ekti mrittudondo
This is a very short story about future where a despotic ldr is punished with death sentence. Though he died 30 years ago of heart attk, he was cloned to take rebirth and now the execution is implemented after reaching his full maturity.

Screensaver
Story of a boy named Topu who suddenly finds a screensaver in his mails. The screensaver is like a com game and seems interactive.
Simultaneously news of murder, suicide, of juveniles come to everyone’s notice.
Topu was also found with tremendous predilection towards the screensaver. One night Topu’s mother finds Topu holding a knife and keeps on murmurring that he must murder his mother though he doesn’t want to. Topu’s mother unplugs the com and saves both of them.
Theory was this is intrusion of internet itself which became more intelligent and controls human beings. This was a test of internet to check their capability of controlling.

Chiriakhana
Hazib kuntera, one of the most heinous human beings of the world and immensely influential, apprehends a journalist who had the guts to write about every wrongdoings of Hazib.
Hazib takes the journalist to a tour of one of his personal islands. He shows the journalist collection of weird animals. Animals which were actually human but grown up with wild beasts and showing evolutionary changes in physical traits.
At last takes the journalist to a cage where humans have been kept devoid of any light from their birth. Hazib wants to see the reaction of those beings when they face any actual human.
However, the journalist assaults Hazib and keeps him locked there.

Beji
Three young students go to an island at the south of BD to assist in relief work after a cyclone. On the way they notice an Island which the local people call as “hokundia” and assume the island as haunted as no one comes back alive from the island.
After participating in relief work, they go for venturing the haunted island. Inside the island they found a house built by a scientist. There was a diary of the scientist in the laboratory of the house. Reading the diary they glean the fact that the scientist was conducting an experiment with intelligent genes of human beings by pushing the gene in the chromosome of the mongoose. He became successful in his experiment but welcomed a predicament by letting the mongoose get free. Gradually the mongoose procreate and kill the scientist with his affiliates.
After discovering the facts, the three young students look out of the laboratory and finds thousands of mongooses standing on two legs outside the complex. Within few minutes the mongooses start attacking in different cunning ways. The mongooses didn’t know the use of fire yet. This ignorance was exploited by the three students to flee from the island. While fleeing, joyonto, one of the three students gives the firebox to the mongooses as a friendly gesture. When they were going away from the island, they saw that the mongooses have used the tech of fire and ablazed the whole island.

এই বইটা কয়েকটা সায়েন্স ফিকশন গল্পের কালেকশন। এর মধ্যে একদম শেষের আর সবচেয়ে বড় গল্পটার নাম বেজি। ওই গল্পের নামেই বইয়ের নাম।

জেনেটিক ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং এর মাধ্যমে মডিফাইড একটা বুদ্ধিমান বেজি প্ৰজাতি একটা প্রত্যন্ত দ্বীপে বংশবৃদ্ধি করে যাইতেসে, যারা আবার মানুষকে নাগালে পাইলে খুন করে ফেলে। ওই দ্বীপে একদিন তিন বন্ধু ঢুকে পড়ে, তারা কিভাবে সার্ভাইভ করে এই নিয়া কাহিনী।

রাত বারোটায় অন্ধকার ঘরে শ্বাস বন্ধ করে এইটা পড়তেসিলাম। বেশ থ্রিলিং। লাইট অফ করার পরে মনে হইতেসে কোন দিক থেকে জানি বেজির দল ঘাড় থেকে মাংস তুলে নিয়ে যায়!

বিভিন্ন কারণেই লেখক জাফর ইকবাল আলোচিত-সমালোচিত। লেখকের কাজের মধ্যে বড় একটি অংশ জুড়েই রয়েছে সায়েন্স-ফিকশন। প্রাপ্তবয়স্কদের কাছে এসব লেখার অধিকাংশই ভালো লাগবেনা। কিন্তু এসব লেখা শিশু-কিশোরদের কল্পনাশক্তি বৃদ্ধি, মানসিক বিকাশের জন্য খুব উপকারী বলে আমি মনে করি।
"বেজি" হলো লেখকের তেমনই একটি অসাধারণ সায়েন্স-ফিকশন। জিনপ্রকৌশলের মাধ্যমে মানুষের বুদ্ধিমত্তা লাভ করা একদল বেজির মুখোমুখি লড়াই এর এডভেঞ্চারধর্মী এই বইটি শিশু-কিশোরদের নতুন কিছু ভাবতে শেখাবে।
তাই স্কুল-কলেজ পড়ুয়া কেউ এই বইটি এখনো পড়ে না থাকলে পড়ে নিতে পারো।

কল্পবিজ্ঞান মানেই যেন বিজ্ঞানীদের উদ্ভট সব খেয়াল। কখনো তা হাসির খোরাক জোগায়, কখনো মৃত্যু।
উদ্ভট সেই আবিস্কারে পৃথিবীর উপর প্রভাব পড়ে কতটা তা ভেবে দেখেছেন?

তাও আবিষ্কার থেমে নেই।
নিত্য নতুন আবিষ্কারে বিজ্ঞানীরা রীতিমতো প্রতিযোগিতা করছেন।
বিজ্ঞানীদের এমন সব উদ্ভট কতগুলো আবিষ্কার ও তার ভবিষ্যত ফলাফল নিয়ে গল্প সাজিয়েছেন জাফর ইকবাল।
রোমাঞ্চকর এই বইটি উপভোগ্য ই বটে।

বস্তুজগতের সাথে অবাস্তব বা পরাবাস্তব অনুভবের মিশেলে ;কখনো বর্তমান কখনো সুদূর ভবিষ্যতের এমন বর্ণিল বুনটের গল্পগুচ্ছ এখনো মনে করিয়ে দেয় জাফর ইকবালের পরাভব শুধু কিশোরকথাতেই কুক্ষিগত নয়।

প্রয়োজনে আয়োজন করে বিজ্ঞানের এইসব খুঁটিনাটি নিয়ে নিখাদ লেখামালা শুধু মাত্র সে চাইলেই আজো পাঠকের হাতে পৌঁছে যায়।

অনেক দিন পর সায়েন্স ফিকশন পড়লাম। "বেজি" গল্পটা বেশ দারূণ। প্লট ও কাহিনী বেশ ভাল লাগেছে। কিছুটা ক্রিপি হলেও খারাপ লাগেনি। শেষ পর্যন্ত ভাল লেগেছে।
