Quinn Robbins was prepared for her mother to be angry. After all, she'd disappeared for two days without warning; to visit the world on the other side of the Dusk Gate that nobody else knows exists.
What she wasn't prepared for was seeing her mother calmly sitting there, waiting for her return, as if Megan Robbins somehow knew the secret, too. And she really wasn't prepared to have her mother not speaking to her, not sharing whatever she knows.
Now, with her mother not talking, her best friend mad at her for disappearing, and her boyfriend, Zander, suspicious and confused, Quinn is left with only one person to turn to.
William Rose had told Quinn she was making a mistake; that lying to her family and friends and risking everything to visit his family in a world where she didn't belong was only going to lead to heartache.
But that was before - before she'd dropped everything to be there for him when he needed her. Before her strange dreams and her special brand of persistence had helped rescue his brother. Before the kiss that Quinn and William aren't talking about.
And before he discovered that everything he ever thought he knew was wrong.
Now, they're on the verge of discovering a secret about their pasts that may just change everything about their futures, and Quinn and William are both about to find themselves deciding between who they always thought they were, and who they're meant to be.
And they just might be making some of those decisions together.
Thorns of Decision picks up where Roots of Insight left off. The problem is, Ms Puttroff is one of the most patient authors I've ever read. In other words, if you want an immediate answer to the cliffhanger from book two...you'd better develop some patience, too! And I mean that in the best way. Good things come to those who wait, so even though you're not going to get your answers immediately, it's more than worth it.
Fortunately my impatience was rewarded with more excellent storytelling as we get to know most of the cast of the Duskgate Chronicles better. And we get to see the relationship between Quinn and William grow into something a little bit more than friendship.
As Thomas recovers from injuries received during his imprisonment, the troubles with Tolliver continue to escalate, and it's not without casualties. As the title indicates, decisions must be made by numerous characters, and I found myself wishing I could read faster to find out what those decisions might be. Now I wish that Ms Puttroff would write faster because I want to know what happens next.
If you've enjoyed the first two books, you'll really love this one. As another reviewer stated, this is definitely the best of the three. The only thing is, I've thought all of them were the best.
I started reading this book Tuesday night when I got home from work… its too bad I work until 11pm! Anyways, I have been waiting for this book for what feels like forever (but was only actually like 2-3 weeks) and the book was just so good that I literally FORCED myself to stop reading it at 5am because I had to work the next day! So I wasn’t able to actually finish it until Wednesday night, but then when I knew I was close to finishing it I didn’t WANT to finish it because I the next book wasn’t coming out till later this year! So onto my thoughts about the book… it was absolutely AMAZING I don’t know what else I can say to make my feelings about this book any clearer. Everything about it was just perfect! Breeana asked me what my favorite part of the book was, and I honestly had a tough time coming up with just one thing but eventually I decided that my absolute favorite part was just watching the way Quinn and William’s relationship grew. It wasn’t rushed and it was so sweet, keep in mind that Quinn is only 16 and William is only 18, so it was so sweet when they finally realized they actually liked each other (no offence to Zander but I never liked him with Quinn) so that was my favorite part if I am forced to choose only one. I also really liked the way that Thomas has been able to grow as well, in the second book Roots of Insight Thomas was forced to go through a major ordeal and although he came out of it he is definitely not the same anymore. He is still carefree most of the time, and always a major flirt with all the girls… but he now has a serious side to him that was a new development in his character and it made me like him even more. I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get to know Linnia a bit better, she had a few big scenes and during them she showed great insight and compassion so I wish we could have spent more time with her, hopefully in the next book we will be able to see her character emerge a little bit more. We also finally found out more about Nathanial... specifically his connection to Quinn, and although I was suspecting something similar to what happened, when I actually got to the part where it clarified it for me, I literally stopped reading and just stared at my IPAD for a minute or to trying to take it in! Overall this was once again such a FANTASTIC book by Breeana Puttroff, I cant believe she has no other books to tide me over until the next book in the Dusk Gate Chronicles series (I don’t even have a title yet for it!) But trust me when I say that this is one of the best series that I have ever read, and although I don’t generally read books more then once I might have to start at the beginning again in order to get me through the wait for the next book! What are you waiting for? Trust me you will not regret reading this series!
Okay, so first off, my sincerest apologies to my readers who may have hollered that the review of this book was missing, as I had previously reviewed the other 4 books in the series, 2 before and 2 after, but the review for this was woefully missing. This was a sincere oversight on my part. I had read it and really thought I had reviewed it, but as I had actually bought this one the minute it was available for purchase, I must have forgotten to post a review.
Fair warning in that it is completely impossible to review a third book in a series without spoilers for earlier books, just can't do it.
When the book opens and Quinn's mother is sitting there waiting for her, my heart stopped. I couldn't believe that there was such a huge plot twist that early in the game. I didn't know what to think, and what came later on was something there was no way I could have expected.
It turns out that things are not what they seem, and there are so many secrets that have been kept from our favorite characters that the end result will leave you reeling, staring at the pages on your ereader and wanting to know what in the world they were thinking. Part of me wanted to throw my Nook across the room.
I commented the other day to a friend that it is a sign of a good writer who can draw me so much into a novel and elicit so much emotion on a book that I have read at least twice before, and yet I am still hit with a sense of shock and ... Just raw emotion.
The characters are well thought out and the world-building is so detailed that you will feel like you are there. If I had to list a negative, there was one spot where there was a character name inconsistency, and some very, very minor editing. The character was a minor character that has no real bearing on the flow of the story, so it wasn't a major distraction, and the editing stuff are things that the casual reader (one who doesn't edit for a living) would never even notice). It was minor enough to have little to no bearing on my rating of this one.
If you are not familiar with this series, you really have to pick up the books and read them. The first in the series is available for free, both on Nook and Kindle, and the other books in the series are more than worth the purchase price.
Okay, so Breeana Puttroff is now the queen of cliff hangers! I thought this was a trilogy but I guess I was wrong. I do have to be honest and say this one was a little slow for me. My mind wondered away from what I was reading more than once. However, towards the end of the book I was up late because I couldn't put my Nook down! I absolutely love all the characters and of course Thomas is my favorite. He makes me laugh. Oh and like I said in my review of book 2, I had figured out who Quinn was and I was correct! Feels good to be right.
So now I must wait like a good little reader for the next book to come out. I am so anxious to get my hands on book 4! I hope Quinn makes the right decision and boots Tolliver to the curb. However, how she is going to balance her life between the two worlds will be interesting to find out. Great job Breeana this series is still one of my favorites.
I am definitely not a writer, so I will do my best to do justice to this book!
I have read and loved every single one of the books of the Dusk Gate Chronicles. I have been anxiously awaiting this book for 6 months! I downloaded it to my kindle as soon as I could and it's been sitting on my kindle since then! I have had the hardest time bringing myself to read it! How could I possibly devour and savor this book at the exact same time?
A lot of times with book series, each book doesn't necessarily get better, but with this series I think that's the opposite. This is my favorite book in the series so far!
The progression in each of the relationships is so natural. I love learning about the world of Eirentheos and the customs and traditions there. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but courting?? Major swoon.
Breeana introduces us to so many characters and somehow I seem to find room for each one! I'm not annoyed that another character has been introduced, but I find myself wanting to know more about the character!
Quinn grows so much in this book. She matures and we start to see her become who she was always meant to become.
I LOVED watching her relationship with a certain male character who shall remain unnamed. I won't go in to details, but let's just say I will definitely be rereading this book. A lot.
Another fantastic read in the Dusk Gate Chronicles. This one gets down and dirty with the secrets that William's family seems to be keeping, not just from William but everyone.
Quinn returns from the royal wedding to be sprung by her Mother for disappearing without approval. Her Mother is giving Quinn the silent treatment severely. Doesn't talk to her at all, skips out of the house before she wakes and doesn't get home until late. Her Mother doesn't want to discuss where Quinn even was or what she got up to. Is there something going on?
Quinn's friends are also very suspicious. Zander, her boyfriend doesn't know if he can trust her any longer. She comes home with injuries and Zander gets concerned and doesn't know what is going on. Is she cheating on him with William or Thomas (William's brother)?
Quinn's dreams are getting stranger and stranger. They are of her in Eirentheos and she feels they are trying to tell her something. But why would she be dreaming of Eirentheos in the first place? More secrets!!
This series is just amazing, with this installment having more intrigue. Totally original and so very addictive. The story is so enjoyable that you can't put it down. I can't wait for the next installment and I believe it will be released towards the end of November.
I read this and book 4 as part of an all in one set so my opinions may actually be drawn from both books but basically I really liked the relationship between Quinn and William and thought that William was the only one in the entire land that actually gave a damn about Quinn herself. Everyone else talked about how much they loved her but in reality it was all about what Quinn could do for them and manipulating her into making the "choice" they wanted. Even though there was lots of talk about it being Quinn's choice to go or stay everyone manipulated her ( except William) so that in the end there was no choice. Even Thomas & Linnea ( who I liked in the first book) were pushy and judgemental in the latter books. Linnea's little speech about putting her childhood ( ie her earth life behind her) and making the grownup choice (to stay in the other land with William) was particularly insulting. Who is Linnea to say that her entire life prior to meeting them doesn't matter. Why isn't anyone speechifying at William to go to Earth to live with Quinn. And her stupid Mother - refusing to talk to her when she was worried about Quinn leaving for ever as if that wouldn't push her away.
Thank you Breeana for an advanced copy-You are an angel:) Hands down-BEST IN THE SERIES! It just keeps getting better.....I read this story in one sitting and was heartbroken when there was nothing left for me to read. Spending her days between two worlds is already a lot for Quinn to handle, but coming home to find out that her whole life has been one big secret and that it is rapidly falling apart at the seams is almost too much. Quinn is faced with some HUGE decisions and must make them quickly for her sake as well as everyone else’s. The answers aren’t always handed over on a platter and the pressure is on, but are the risks too high? I loved the multiple POV’s. It allowed insight into other characters and their story lines. Especially Will *Swoon*!! Ah..and my world was rocked when everything was exposed. Brilliant yet again Breeana- can’t wait to see what will happen in the next installment!
I was disappointed to find this series was not a trilogy...oh well. I mostly enjoyed them. This last book was not as good as the other two in that I didn't like the love story in it (and there were more typos). Don't get me wrong, I love a good romance, but this one felt a bit off. I wanted the characters to get together, I just didn't like the dialogue and how they acted together. A bit too much drama, though it is clean. I'm curious to see where the story goes, but I wish the author had made one longer book instead of drawing it out into a series, because it does feel drawn out. I feel like I read these books waiting and waiting for something important to happen and little ever does. It sounds like I didn't like them, but I did. I just kept hoping for something more.
I really enjoyed the plot of these stories. I thought the characters had great depth. Everyone makes mistakes and reflects on what the consequences of their actions have been or would be. I also really liked the romance.
The main complaint I had about the books is that many parts moved really slowly. A lot is described in excruciating detail. I managed to skip whole chapters without missing much of what happened. This is just my personal preference, I'm not a huge fan of excessive description in stories, although I do appreciate it when I can skip the main boring parts and still find out what happens in the plot which is what I did here since the plot did interest me.
I'm glad I stuck with it. This book had some more interesting developments, I almost feel like the first two books were sort of like prequels to this one and this is where the real "story" begins.
I won't spoil it. I honestly think a lot of people would like this, but more particularly people of the female persuasion :)
Ch 1 Quinn didn't know the tears had escaped from the corners of her eyes until they had dripped down her cheeks. William uses the back of his fingers to brush away the tears, then traces her face until he is cupping her face in his hands. He lifts her chin so that her eyes meet his and says "You don't have to make a decision yet. Whatever decision you make I will be here for you." Relief floods Quinn's chest as she releases a breath she didn't know she had been holding and answers, "I am so confused and don't know what to do, it is so complicated and I'm scared, but whatever I do I am sure about one thing, that I want to be with you." Then their lips meet in a gentle, chaste kiss that quickly turns into something more, until Linnea knocks on the door, "Hey, what are you guys doing?"
Ch 2 Same thing
All the Chapters through Chapter 14 More kissing and crying and indecision that is decidedly decisive.
Ch 15 Nathaniel Explains (actual chapter title) Nathaniel explains -her father's secrets -a few generations of family history -Philotheum history and traditions -Dovelnian religious beliefs and how they impacted Philotheum politics -the underground movement that has begun to save the world -what all this has to do with Eirentheos -what all this has to do with Quinn -what this means about what will happen next that will affect the fate of multiple kingdoms and the worlds on both sides of the gate
Ch 16 through the end MORE (chaste) KISSING!!!!! Have to make up for a whole chapter without a single kiss!
So this series is very fluffy, the plot is predictable, the characters are only very very good or very very evil, it takes forevah for anything to happen, when it does it is not super realistic, but for whatever reason I'm still holding out hope that there will be enough interesting story to make it worth the read.
"Somehow he’d gone from being a sort-of friend she barely knew to someone she wasn’t sure that she was ever going to be able to walk away from.
It baffles me how this series isn't well known or read on here! It's an amazing series for there only to be 1000 ratings on Goodreads.
Anyway... Thorns of Decisions... Quinn, in this book, has just come through the gate to find her mother, of all people, waiting for her in her world. Her mother, after this, doesn't speak to her for what seems like a week. Later we find out long kept secrets that her mother and others else has been keeping from Quinn. LIFE ALTERING SECRETS!
Now Quinn has a lot of decisions, especially a major one, to make.
Loved it. I just love the characters. Each one! William and Quinn go perfectly together and I love their romance. I love Thomas and Linnea, the twins. They're wonderful too, especially Thomas with his flirty attitude.
Anyway, if you've never read this series, go check out the first book. You won't be disappointed at all!
This a a very emotion packed part of this series. I was so happy for Quinn and William and yet so worried about the kingdom and how their relationship would be impacted. There were some hard trying times as well which brought tears to my eyes. I’m really anxious to find out how it all ends.
I loved book one but book 2 and 3 have really dragged on and on. I found everything a little too predictable. No real conflict between characters and resolution is found almost immediately. MC is upset people keep things from her but then she does the same thing.
Une série toujours aussi pépère et sympa, mais c'est un peu frustrant de voir tout le monde patauger ici autour de ce grand secret, alors qu'il est plus évident depuis le tome précédent (voir le tout premier pour ceux qui ont un brin de flair).
Just couldn't deal with any more crying and dragging on and on and on with no plot movement. I'm starting not to care about the characters, which is sad because I really liked them in book one. And her Mom!!! Seriously!? Giving up on this one.
I love this series more every time I read it (about four times now). The characters are fascinating and the world building is easy to follow. Clean romance appropriate for teens and adults.
This book gives me goosebumps at times, and I loved watching William realize he could have something he once thought impossible. I wish Linnea was real because she would be an amazing friend.
Didn’t love this as much as book 2 despite the storyline getting much more serious and the characters brought more to life. Maybe too much intensity? I’m definitely continuing the series however.
1 star DNF. Why? Cause Disney ain't got shit on unrealistic expectations compared to this book. The relationship between Quinn and William is reminiscent of the Pretties in the Uglies trilogy: plastic smiles, vapid personalities/relationships, basically people without a coherent and realistic thought in their brain, utterly disconnected from human nature. Plastic people. That's what Quinn and William have turned into. Why? Because of the romance. The romance is crap.
Now, I'm a big fan of romance. I mostly read romance. Why is this so bad? Because it's fake. I never thought I'd see anything more fake than Disney, but as the Biebs keister said, never say never (I hope I got the phrase right). Anyways, it's just bad and I'm not biased. I'm very fortunate to have an amazing relationship with the hubby. We barely ever have fights and when we do, they end quickly, we help each other up, and learn from them... You know, the stuff couples SHOULD do. Really, I don't know any couple other than his parents who are the poster children for a happy relationship (not just still married after 30 years, but actually missing each other while at work after 50 years being together). Anyway, even we (and his parents) fight and yell, get selfish and storm away, get pissed off and have to resolve issues. Quinn and William? Well, they're just peachy. Most of the time they're in Happy Bliss land. When they're not, they are courteous, understanding, patient, remorseful and issues/fight get resolved in mere minutes. It's like the scientist put spice and everything nice, but instead of getting Powerpuff Girls with personalities, we got saddled with PPP (perfect plastic people).
Really, there's no angst between the two of them. Every issue gets revolved quickly. Neither one is selfish and they're both super giving and supportive. There's like... NO FLAW. No human imperfection. They're just robots with forever plastered smiles on their faces reminiscent of the Joker (but not in a creepy way).
So besides this, why was the book dropped? Frankly, the writing style is ok, average. Not bad, but not terrific either. What kept me in so long was the story line. It was intriguing and original and I wanted to find out what happened next. Unfortunately, the big plot twist/shocker was visible from the last book. It's not even one of those books where you know what's going to happen, but are still fully engaged. Nope, with this it's like seeing the fright train moving slower than a snail. You know it's coming,, but it's taking its sweet ass time to get here. You eat, sleep, study, work, etc, and it's STILL not here. Kind of hard to get into the book since by this point it's going slower than a turtle in molasses.
Sigh... Between the ok writing, the shitty romance and the let's pretend no one knows the secret even though it's obvious from miles away, the book is just ok... Actually, scratch that, less than ok. The worst review I can give is a DNF aka WOT (waste of time).
