Lexi Morgan has always had The Touch; the ability to pick up an object and 'see' its past. Doomed to wearing protective gloves at all times, she learned to accept it as equal parts gift and curse. When her brother in law Neil disappears, she'd rather tell her sister to celebrate than try to help find the jerk. But after her young niece vanishes as well, it's time to put her gift to good use and help track her down, especially when handsome Detective Gabriel Ryan takes over the case. When the investigation leads them to the restless spirits of long dead children, they must work together to keep history from repeating itself before it's too late.
Lisa Olsen is a writer, wife and mother of two, currently living in the Pacific Northwest. A complete TV addict, she also enjoys online RPG's, singing, reading, and cooking.
I would be interested in reading something else this author has written to see if her writing style has matured at all. There are good intentions and some relatively good character building, but a lot of this just screams of an amateur effort.
1) Errors, errors everywhere. I should have known that the professional editor in me was going to have a hard time when the book was dedicated to, among others, her daughter... who was also her proofreader. It shows. There wasn't a single page that didn't have at least one grammar/punctuation/sentence structure problem. Main offender -- the dreaded comma splice. One one page, there were 4 in a row. And on another page, there were two sentences that each had two comma splices in them. If it was just one or two I wouldn't comment, but when there are over 100 grammatical errors because the author didn't shell out a couple hundred bucks for a professional copyeditor, I cringe. If you want to be serious about your work, you need to make the investment -- and that means if you know you aren't good enough at writing technically well, then you need to find someone who is before you put yourself and your work out there.
2) Foreshadowing with the subtlety of a hammer. This is a pet peeve of mine with self-published authors. It seems that a lot of authors don't think that the reader is smart enough to think about what's happening on their own, so they need their characters to muse internally and ask questions that the reader should be asking if they are paying attention. But inevitably, the character just draws our attention to something so strongly that it ruins any surprise later. Like when the character goes "Wait, why was THIS happening now? It seemed sooooo strange, what's going on? Oh well I'm sure it's nothing......." And then we are supposed to be surprised with the character later on when we both "discover" that it actually WASN'T just nothing... lol o rly? No kidding? In general, internal musing is a bad sign when it takes up more than 25% of the story, because it seems to just be filler, rehashing what has already happened in case we didn't "get it" the first time around. I also think authors tend to do this when they want to have a surprise ending and want to make sure we know how clever they were, so we have to be reminded all along that there is a puzzle.
3) Really odd emotional reactions to things. In the first chapter, everyone is just finding out that her sister's husband is missing and a cute detective comes to talk to them... and the chapter ends with "The question was... who was his [the detective's] type?" Really? THAT'S the question? Second, when our main character and her sister find out that the niece is also missing (which I put in here because it's in the main book description, so I figure this isn't a spoiler), they......... have a girl's night and giggle and watch movies. Seriously. And then a police offer finds out something bad happened and he's giddy about it. It's just... really odd and feels like the characters aren't reacting like humans, but are railroaded into the outline the author had for the book. She wants to set up a romance so she makes our no-nonsense main character muse about him just after she hears bad news even though that makes no sense.
The writing itself isn't particularly spectacular. As I've mentioned before, there are a large number of comma splices and other errors. This is a problem in and of itself, but it also means that she's writing the same kind of sentences over and over and over again. "[complete sentence],[complete sentence]". It lacks a poetry or cadence. Even with a good editor, the focus for this author seems to be plot over style. There's nothing necessarily wrong with this, but combined with the grammatical errors and the other issues, this work feels amateurish.
I was looking at her page to see what other books she has written, and I see there are quite a number of them. Almost 10? And they have all been published in the past 2 years. 10 books in two years, with severe grammatical errors? It really feels like she's just cranking them out and going for quantity over quality. I would really urge her to slow down, hone her craft, focus on the words as well as the story, and... please, get a good editor! A good editor will help clean your story up and allow you to present yourself in the most professional way possible.
* I received a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review. * Let me first start by admitting that “The Touch” is the first of Lisa Olsen’s books that I have read, but is most definitely not the last. I enjoyed this book from the very start and couldn't put it down, I was hooked. The opening paragraph drew me in and I was torn between wanting and needing to know what was going to happen next. At times I thought it was going in one direction, and it ended up going somewhere completely different! This book was filled with suspense, murder, and creepy ghost children, as well as amazing characters that you can't help but like and relate to on a personal level. Lexi is such vibrant character. I loved her colorful vocabulary and her inner monologues, as well as her no nonsense attitude. I loved Lexi's character, and many of the lesser characters were very engaging and fun in their own way (even Cooper). Lisa’s characters are realistic in a sense that you can picture yourself hanging out with them, talking to them on the phone or just spending time with them as people that would be your friends. The "un-relatable" part of them was the paranormal aspect, but that was just as fun and exciting to read about and wonder how you would react if a friend were to tell you that she could "read" you by touching something of yours. I am not sure how I would handle it, but I like to think that I am pretty open minded.
The paranormal twist just pushed a great book over the edge into an amazing book. The reason that I gave this book a 4 star instead of a 5 star rating is because of 2 things. The first being that there were a few grammatical and spelling errors throughout the story. They didn't detract from the story, but they did stand out as I was reading. The second being the ending. It felt rushed. The author did such a great job throughout the book with the details, the scene setting and the build-up that the end seemed like it was a let down. As soon as I finished reading I looked for the next book about the same characters and there was none, so it really left the reader with a lot of unanswered questions. Perhaps the author is planning another book based on these characters, but until then I was left to wonder what happened to them next. Add this book to your TBR list and you won't be sorry, it is a perfect summer/beach/pool read and just like I think that I have found an amazing new author, you will too. I look forward to reading more from Lisa Olsen!

A Review for you!!! 'The Touch By Lisa Olsen Synopsis: Lexi Morgan has always had The Touch; the ability to pick up an object and 'see' its past. My Review: The Touch By Lisa Olsen: I am becoming quite the fan of Ms. Olsen! Her writing style, The banter between the characters and the depth of each one. In The Touch, Lexi, has a "gift" she is one of the people who can "see" a persons thoughts and actions if she touches a personal item that belongs to them. When Lexi's brother in law Neil (not such a great guy) disappears without a trace, her sister Allie calls her to help in her special way. This is where we meet Detective Gabriel Ryan, a familiar face to Lexi (not telling you how you have to read it) and together they try and solve the mystery. Add in other Characters like Paul and Maddie , Lexi's house mates, and Chloe , Allie's daughter who also has a gift, of seeing ghosts. Will Lexi believe Chloe when she tells her about the ghosts and how some of them are evil..What happens to Chloe? Will Gabriel freak out when he finds out why Lexi ALWAYS wears gloves, will he think shes a nut case? and just where is Neil? Read this wonderfully written book to find out! This story moves quickly and you are finished before you know it.... YES its THAT good. I give The Touch 5 pairs of gloves! Ms. Olsen I look forward to reading more of your work!
I really like the idea of this book. There is a lot of potential to the plot and the characters. And maybe it would have been a good book if the author had actually written the plot, rather than bogging things down with an unnecessary romance and long, flowery paragraphs about the MC's magical "touch" power. The power itself isn't the problem. It just feels like the author is in love with the power and writes about it endlessly.
The Touch begins when Lexi's brother-in-law goes missing. Lexi has a gift of using her hands to touch objects to see things. So, her sister thinks she can help her find her husband. But when that becomes a problem another family member goes missing, and things go from bad to worse for Lexi and her sister. Not only that but Detective Ryan seems to be a man Lexi can't seem to get off of her mind, and he's equally intrigued by her. But when more strange things start to happen neither one are sure of what to do or what is to come.
The touch was okay. It wasn't bad, but it really wasn't great either. But the whole beginning till almost a little past the halfway point it was really good actually. But then to me it just sort of really fell flat. I also hated the way it ended. It frustrated me, and left us with still more questions even though it wasn't a cliffhanger.
The writing was good though, and I really enjoyed Lexi and Detective Ryan! Lexi is actually kind of funny, and her ability was super interesting. And the relationship that was developing between the two was awesome to watch as well.
So for me I liked the book, but if there is a second one I probably won't read it. This one was good to pass the time with for a while.
Great story, containing some of my favorite elements - psychic powers, ghost story, and a little romance! Free spirit Lexi has the gift (well maybe not gift) of psychometry, and can read people based on the objects they have touched. This has made her life very difficult, starting when it drove her mother away, branding her a freak in school, and causing her to wear gloves almost 24/7. But Lexi's tough, and she's coping, with her art, her friends, and her beloved niece Chloe. Her relationship with her sister Allie isn't the greatest, and she can't stand Allie's husband Neil (the word asshat was used multiple times), but nothing is perfect. One day out of the blue she gets a call from Allie - Neil is missing and she wants Lexi's help to find him. So Lexi dutifully heads over to help, where she meets cute Detective Ryan (an old boyfriend of Allie's) who is working the case. Unfortunately, finding Neil is not easy, and there are complications no one could have foreseen. Quick, fun, slightly spooky read!
So I had this book back in my Kindle carousel for God knows how long now... In one of those nasty bookhangover, I looked at the title and began reading it without much hope that it would get me out of my deep funk. A few pages and I really wanted to stop reading it. I didn't want to read paranormal stuff right now, but I manage to keep going, and going, and going when I suddenly realized I was totally sucked into the story! I mean I read about half the book in one morning and only stopped because I had to get some actual paying work done ! The story develops slow, but I like the way the characters finally relate to each other. I love the way the author played Gabriel : tough, sure of himself but yet soft and falling in love fast for Lexi. So I finished the story and felt happy about getting to know them.... I think Lisa Olsen is becaming quickly one of my favorite authors. I read another one of her books, The pretty witches one first and really liked the way she tells you the story....
The Touch by Lisa Olsen, as many elements to appeal to a variety of interests. There is Lexi's Paranormal talent of being able to sense the past of a person through an object they have touched. There is Mystery - a missing husband, a missing child and a dead body. Which means there is a cop, a hero, which then leads to Romance.
But that is not all! And here is where it gets really good. And by really good, I mean creepy good. In addition to all that lovely paranormal, mystery and romance, there is a Haunted House. It's a Ghost Story.
I listened to the audiobook. The narrator, Andi Arndt, really added to the creepy atmosphere, but I can't tell you how because that would be a spoiler.
Yeah, I liked this one. Lovely ghost story combined with a mystery. Highly recommended!
While predictable, this was a nice book to spend a lazy Sunday with. The premise is that Lexi, the protagonist, has a gift that in many ways is more of a curse. Her gift, such as it is, allows her to get visions of a person's life when she touches objects. Her sister, Alli's husband has gone missing and she solicits Lexi's help. Along the way, we find that the husband has been unfaithful and their creepy old house is in fact haunted. There's a bit of a romance which was fairly nicely done and Lexi is a likeable character. If you like mysteries with a bit of the paranormal, you just might like spending a couple of hours with this pleasant little novel.
I was just bouncing around trying to find something different from my norm. While there is the obvious need for an editor, I still like the story well enough to finish. It did not grab me, and I actually had to come back to it a few times because I just did not "feel" the vibe Ms. Olsen was trying to convey. However, I did see enough to make me want to go back and see something else. I wonder what the author feels is her 'signature' piece...the one she wants to really be known for having written.
Good book. Probably opening book of a series. A touch of supernatural, which everyone just seems to accept which is fun. A very quick read. The main character Lexi, can read items that she touches. She can see the person who touched it and what they did with it, she can see where they are who they are with. Now that would come in handy if you were a cop...how about being attracted to a cop...hmmmmm, sounds like a plot. Ghosts also figure into the book. Fun little beach read.
This book was very slow to start off. I picked it up several times not getting more than a few pages in before my attention was drawn to something else going on inthe room. However, once I got through the first couple of chapters the storyline picked up consideably. I enjoyed the paranormal aspect of this missing persons story, but could have done without the romance between the main character and the detective.
I loved this book. I re-read it already. I wanted to make sure I didn't miss a thing. Lexi is such a vibrant character. I loved her colorful vocabulary and her inner monologue.
Not only was this book funny but it also was such a great mystery. The paranormal twist just pushed a great book over the edge into an Amazing book. I think that I have found an amazing new Author. I look forward to more from Lisa Olsen!!!!!
This book took me by surprise... I thought it was going in one direction, and it ended up going somewhere completely different! The tone is a little eerie and creepy as you clue in with Lexi to what's going on... I'm glad I didn't read this at night, or it might have made for uncomfortable sleeping.
It's an exciting story and definitely worth reading for a bit of romance, a bit of a scary story, and some interesting revelations as the mystery is unraveled.
I soooo loved this book! Could not put it down! I got to the really good parts in the middle of the night and the book had me freaking out a little. It was creepy in such a good way. The only thing negative I have about it is that it left me wanting more and It didn't feel like it was over, like maybe there could be another book or two or three to be written...hint hint! I really think this could be a really cool series. And another awesome book from Lisa! You're my hero! :)
"A roll of the eyes was given." I would have rated this higher had it not been for the extravagant use of the aforementioned line and the blatant disregard for reality toward the end of the book. I mean, seriously? You almost die and yet you're talking sexy talk? Total ew. And what happens to Chloe?! Poor little thing! I really enjoyed the beginning and the premise of the main character being able to "see" things by touching items. But the ending was a disappointing, rushed and disjointed mess.
I must say I have split views on this book. First off it was a really well written story which I did enjoy for the most part. The story had an air of creepiness to it. I do agree with the reviewer who said it would be a light beach read. What I didn't like about the story was that I thought there was way too much of the Romance Dance, which, in my opinion, detracted from the story. Just sayin'!
Great book! I love a unique story and this definitely had that twist to it! My only disapointment was the ending. I would imagine that was done to set up for book 2? But it left me feeling like I didn't get to the end where it was left off at. I do hope there is a second book, maybe one that involves delving into Lexi's parents and Chloe's recovery. More more please!!!
Loved the book... kept me guessing from the beginning, and even when I thought I had it figured out the ending was a surprise. I also liked the interaction between the quirky main character Lexi and the detective, and their slowly developing relationship. Definitely recommend it!

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were likable, the mystery an suspense had you not quite knowing what was going on. Over all it was a good an enjoyable read. First time reading this author but now I know I will be checking out more of her work!
Very quick read. Has mystery, paranormal activity and budding romance. It keeps you intersetd. Nice read for a car trip. Lexi is a sweet quirky character and Det. Gabriel Ryan helps her solve a mystery in her own family and in her life.
A nice light paranormal read. I thought it was a Young Adult novel as I was reading it, but it is not listed as that genre. No matter, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I happen to like the Young Adult genre. :')
I really enjoyed this book, it kept me guessing early on and I honestly never seen the ending coming. It wasn't quite an edge of the seat thriller, but it kept me coming back for more each night. I will definitely have to read more from this author.
The idea behind the story is really good and very interesting however, execution wasn't very good. The beginning was a little slow and boring, I almost stopped reading. And then the end didn't really wrap up some loose ends, and nothing kills me more then having loose ends....
Another incredible story from Lisa Olsen! I was totally enthralled with this book. Highly recommend to all Paranormal Romance lovers. Once you start reading you become the characters and are unable to put the book down!
