One night.

One party.

One chance to change everything.

Miles

I couldn’t help but watch Ray from across our bedroom windows, wanting something that I couldn’t have. She felt untouchable somehow, a friendship too precious to risk losing. But it feels different tonight. Maybe it’s been building for a long time, and I’m finally buckling beneath the pressure. It’s the way Ray’s skirt hugs her curves, those big gray eyes watching me, daring me to make a move. Maybe I will. Maybe the party tonight won’t be so bad. It could be just what we need.

Raylene

Miles’ place in my life has always been clear—classmate, neighbor, best friend—we just fit. But as my feelings grew beyond the neat boxes that I’d put him in, so did the fear. Teaching for what I wanted could ruin everything that I cared about most. So I did nothing. When he breaks up with his girlfriend, I suggest a party to bring us back together, a way to reconnect after hard boundaries had been set by us both. But something is different tonight, something about the way Miles watches me. Touches me. Anything feels possible. Will I risk it all for a chance to get closer?

How could such a short book make me feel so much? 🥹

Actual rating: 4.5🌟
What to expect:
◦ NA Contemporary Romance
◦ Short Novella
◦ 24 hours in Miles & Ray's life
◦ Dual POV
◦ Childhood Friends to Lovers
◦ Great chemistry between characters
∘ College students
∘ Tender care & "beg me for it"
Not erotica

I would like to start by thanking the author for sharing their book with me as an ARC ❤️. It's important to me to be transparent and let readers know that my review is honest and unbiased.

Trust me when I say this short novella is worth your time! I just wish it wasn't that short.
Closer is the first novella in The 15th Street Series, a collection of novellas that each focus on a different couple and take place within a 24-hour time frame.

This was my first time reading her work, and I can't believe how quickly she drew me into the story. Her writing style is captivating and she manages to evoke such intense feelings in her readers ...
If she can make me fall in love with her characters in just a few pages, I can only imagine what she could do with a full-length novel.

Summary
Closer follows Raylene and Miles, two bestfriends that have been secretly in love with each other for years, but neither daring to make a move for fear of jeopardizing their friendship.
They've watched each other fall in and out of relationships for years, comforting each other, but neither has had the bravery to try push their relationship beyond friendship.
However, after Miles breaks up with his current girlfriend, Raylene decides to take action. She suggests they go to a party, hoping that if she shows Miles she can be like all the other girls he's been hanging out with, he might see her as more than just a friend.

Romance
Ray is truly an amazing character. She possesses an admirable strength of character, always displaying kindness, empathy, and unwavering support for those around her. She is a truly compassionate person, who deserves nothing but the best.
Miles is a respectful young man who would do everything in his power to make Ray happy and would not hesitate to put anyone who dared to speak ill of her in their place. His loyalty and devotion to Ray are admirable. ~ even I fell for him a little ~
The chemistry between them is undeniable, and once they finally acknowledge their feelings for each other, the sparks that fly are simply electric.
They make such a great pair together and I'm here on the sidelines screaming my support like a crazy fangirl. I may have only spent less than 24 hours with these two, but I already love them.

Conclusion
In conclusion, Marlow made a great job in making me obsessed with these characters and their stories, and I'm eagerly waiting for the next novella to drop!

*ARC review* 4.5 stars:
Closer had all the beats I'm looking for in a full-length Novel but was condensed into something perfect to pick up on a whim and read in one setting.

"Boyfriends aren’t forever. A friend can be her always… But fuck, I want to be the goddamn boyfriend."

This was fucking good! It's decided: Marlow can write whatever she wants, and I'll eat it up 🛐

I think Novellas are a tricky thing to execute. I've read so many where the pacing felt off, there was no build-up, or the balance between story & spice was non-existent (which is fine for erotica, though!)
But Marlow managed to balance it so well.

I adored Miles and Ray instantly, and their chemistry was believable. It didn't hurt that I LOVE childhood friends to lovers because all the secret pining gets me every time!
And the BOLDNESS of the these two! If you know, you know hahaha ❌🚗
And the ending?! I should've known. (I don't know If I loved it...what I do know is that it fits the story)

The tidbits of the side characters makes me hope for more Novellas - I need Charmaine's story, pretty please! 😫

Closer is perfect as a palette cleanser or when you crave a little Romance, but can't commit to a full length novel.

🗂Genre: Contemporary Romance
📕Type: Standalone/ Novella

🏷Tropes:
- Childhood Best Friends to Lovers
- 24h
- House Party
- Secret Pining
- Tension & Spice

⚠️Safety: no cheating, slight owd, mentioned: drug use,

📖Format: 1st person, dual POV

🎧Theme song: New Order - Blue Monday

”I wanted to fucking lick your wounds for you, explore you and turn that uncertainty into confidence.”

5/5⭐ - 2.5/5🌶️

This was the perfect short story! Marlow’s writing never fails to enchant me! Her narration is cinematic and her words are always saturated in vivid, neon colors. She has a lively, magical writing that converts her words to striking images, fiddling just underneath your lids.

This was a sweet, fun and lustful story of two fascinating characters that did the friends-to-lovers trope so much justice. Their interactions were magnetic, as though their beings were pulled fundamentally to each other, and veiled with a burning longing. Not only we had the chance to learn the crooks and curves of each mc but we also became familiar with the cogs that turn and move their friendship, the lustful tension, and the secret feelings that emit from that relationship.

For a short story, the book was perfectly paced. I felt as if I was familiar with the characters longer than I actually was. Quickly but naturally, I found myself caring for them. I was excited to see them chase and yearn for each other. The story was generally fun, with livid scenes, exciting side characters and enough drama to keep the interest peaked.

But although all the fun, little things, that complimented the story, the spotlight never strayed from the mcs. I am not sure if that was possible to begin with. Marlow always presents strong, intricate main characters. Ray and Gunn Raygunn, shined both individually and simultaneously. Two very different characters that had developed their own way of communication. Their inner thoughts were so fun to read!

I will never understand how Marlow makes her mmcs so hot! Miles Gunn was such a gentleman but also scorchingly hot! The way he carried himself, his attitude, his mouth! I freakin’ adored him!

So, I am unsure of what happened to my previous Arc review and the previous edition it was originally posted to on April 20, 2023. But, I am going to repost what I originally wrote as I have zero idea what happened.

Previous post that mysteriously disappeared:

I am grateful for the opportunity to have been able to ARC read this book, I had an amazing ARC read with Marlow's debut book The Lazarus and know what strengths exist in the writing style. However , I don't feel like this Novella had a true voice. The intent of this story, is to be a palette cleanser, easy/light read, which I felt was achieved. But, I was not having an easy time understanding if it truly had it's own identity. I felt that in the matter of time that this story lasts, the point needs to develop smoothly, quickly, and remain relevant. And I could not help but feel echoes of other books I've read. I personally feel that this Novella could have been executed differently and stronger. I would have loved seeing the story let loose and had instead spent more time on being "young, wild, and brave", rather than getting a little too caught up on things that directed attention onto content that seemed like "filler". Granted, this could come into play at a later book. I just had a few too many issues that presented themselves for me to enjoy this story.

Holy crap on a cracker! Everything about this was perfect.

I am not a big friends to lovers girlie but give me a story like this and I AM HOOKED.

Perfect execution, incredibly lovable characters, fantastic scene setting, and delectable spice.

Marlow is an incredible storyteller and Closer is proof that woman can write any genre and write it well.

I cannot wait for this series to continue. It is the perfect escape.

An elite friends to lover story-absolutely loved. 🤭🤭🤭

Even though our time with Miles and Ray is brief, we get to see so much of their story that I feel I know everything I need to know. Marlow is incredible for being able to do this in such a limited amount of pages. Entertaining, cute, oh so anngggsttty, and such squeal worthy inner monologues. Highly recommend! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

“Closer (15th Street #1)” by Marlow Locker

3⭐️/5⭐️
3🌶/5🌶

“Boyfriends aren’t forever. A friend can be her always… But fuck, I want to be the goddamn boyfriend.”

-This is a very short, roughly 100 page novella about two friends who finally acknowledge their romantic feelings. The MMC, Miles, has just dumped his girlfriend. He promptly visits his best friend and next door neighbor, Raylene (the FMC). There’s a ton of sexual tension between the two of them right from the start. Raylene decides she wants to go to a party, so the two of them get drunk and finally take action on their mutual crushes.

-I like the friends to lovers trope, and I think Marlow did a good job writing Miles and Raylene’s relationship. At times I got a little bit bored, maybe because it doesn’t take long for them to act on their feelings now that Miles is single.

-There were a couple moments when the dialogue took me out of the story, like when Raylene makes some pretty judgemental comments about the type of guys “beautiful girls with big boobs” go for. I think it was unnecessary, it felt kind of like “I’m not like most girls”. I also found Miles’ ex, Marissa, to be a caricature of the stereotypical mean girl commonly seen in films from the 00’s. Characters like Marissa seem like a poor attempt at taking any blame off the MMC. Poor Miles, in a bad relationship with Marissa, the evil popular girl. Except Miles willingly dated her for months, so what does that say about him?

-It’s a little spicy, but I honestly felt kind of bored during the smutty scenes. I guess I didn’t feel a huge connection to the characters, so I didn’t feel invested in their eventual hookup. All in all, it’s a fine novella, but it didn’t really wow me.

My face hurts from smiling so much. My legs are weak from swooning. I am so overwhelmed with joy.

So grateful for the opportunity to review this ARC!

It is indeed a rare occurrence that a novel, or novella in this case, makes me want to squeal with excitement. Marlow has an immense talent that keeps me fully engaged and reluctant to take even a small break. An amazing writer, taking a chance on a trope that is so underrated, yet she made it incredibly magical.

It was 11:30pm when I jumped out of bed, unable to control the giddy feeling of love and the fluttering of butterflies in my stomach. I grabbed a hair brush and danced around, overwhelmed by pure joy.

Ultimately, this is a novella that broke through some dark shadows and renewed my soul.

Fast-paced but full of plot, appropriately paced and phenomenal - I truly believe Marlow can write any genre or take any trope and turn it into the greatest adventure.

Raylene and Miles will go down as one of my favourite book couples. Their friendship and evolving relationship is genuine and unabashedly beautiful. Miles' POV chapters were utterly perfect.

I can’t even fucking begin to fathom how she fucking calculated that we were only friends still because of our past. Like she isn’t one of the most important people in my life—that I wouldn't do anything for her. That every fucking day I come home, no matter how terrible it’s been, I see her light on and my heart feels real again.
“You drive me crazy, I’ve watched you from five. Fucking. FEET away for fourteen years. I endured every fucking day that I couldn’t touch you—couldn’t kiss you. I’ve wanted you for so long it's maddening.”

I just want to start by saying I read Marlow’s book The Lazarus in January and was completely obsessed with her writing. So I knew I was going to read any and all books she writes moving forward! 😆 Miles and Raylene’s relationship is absolutely beautiful. They care so much for one another. I LOVE a good slow burn and this slow burn was GOOD! I was grinning and smiling throughout the entire story. The whole vibe of this book had me so nostalgic of being younger and going to college parties. (Not that I’m that old) 😂 I finished this book in one day. I just didn’t want to put it down. It’s a wonderful short read in between larger books. A palette cleanser if you will. I HIGHLY recommend reading this novella!!!! And if you haven’t yet read any of Marlow’s work, this is your sign to do it now 😊 This is my first ARC read as a newer bookstagram account and I’m so honoured that it is one of Marlow’s 🥰

First, I want to say thank you to Marlow for kindly giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This novella was EVERYTHING! I’m already a huge fan of Marlow and her writing after reading The Lazarus, the first book in her Vernum City series. She has such an incredible way of working with her story and the most intensely beautiful words to tell that story. Whenever I read anything of hers, I’m in constant awe.

Her mastery of prose, gripping stories, and the best way to portray those stories to readers is astounding. Not only is she so skilled with scene blocking, pacing, and story progression, but the way she writes is so unique. She has a way with words that comes across gritty, realistic, relatable, beautiful, and truly, truly talented. I feel like I’m right there in the story, like the characters have reached through the page and plucked my inner thoughts and feelings right out of me and expressed them so perfectly.

The closer did JUST that, and I expect no less from Marlow. Ray and Miles are such intensely realistic characters. I could feel their aches, their struggles, their longing, their love, their adoration through and through. I felt I was right there with them, hearing they’re worried and cheering them on.

I’m just so awe-struck by this beautiful story. It includes friends-to-lovers done in the best way possible, some great sex scenes, beautiful imagery between these two MCs and their storied pasts together, and such an achingly-real sense of longing. Longing to belong, to fit in, to feel seen, and to reach out and have the person you’re desperately in love with.

Marlow, if you read this, bravo. Truly, you’ve somehow managed to pack an entire cascade of emotion into a short novella and did it wonderfully. I can’t wait to read more from you!

CLOSER by Marlow Locker

*ARC Review*

Marlow Locker is the author of one of my favorites 😈 The Vernum City Series: The Lazarus, Book One. I think I will read everything and anything this lovely human writes! This novella is much different, with no masks and vigilantes.

This was a beautiful palate cleanser of a novella! I think I really needed it to be honest.

This is giving me nostalgic vibes of college parties and butterflies of having a friend you wanted to be more. With POV from both our friends you got the satisfaction of knowing what both were dreaming of 🥰. This is a story of friends to lovers with a HEA.

The cheeky close proximity of being in a crowded place having these intimate moments happen so organically....ugh gives me chills, like watching a movie play out in your mind and I wanted to scream with joy! I was smiling and ready to party alongside Raygun while reading their story 🫶🥰.

When the timing is right...

Closer is the first novella in the 15th Street Series. This is a contemporary friends to lovers romance- set over one night, at one party with tension ready to bubble over.

Locker has crafted the perfect romance that proves timing is everything. Two best friends, who have always maintained respectful boundaries yet remained devoted to each other (in their own way), finally get to try their luck at persuing more.

@m.lockkerreads writes inner monolouges and dialouge that creates depth, rationale and connection between her characters. I loved their history and awkwardness, it was incredibly relatable and I felt so invested in them and their story. More than once this read had me reacting out loud, the butterflies 🦋 started early on with the best part being their building tension.
A light, fun and sêggsy read that has found a place in my heart and my comfort read list. 5⭐

_____my thoughts_____
marlow is becoming one of my favorite authors. her writing just speaks to me. i could see the book playing in my head like a movie, it reads easy & i had so much fun. let me tell you, i don't really like friends to lovers but i trust marlow & i'm so glad i gave it a chance. this sh*t was. so. good. i don't want to say much because it's quite short & i think you should just experience it for yourself.

i will share my favorite parts:
🥃miles×ray's connection was fire 🔥
🥃the tension !!!!!
🥃the 'beg me' scene
🥃starlight
🥃how petty miles×ray are. iykyk
🥃miles making ray's safety a priority
🥃the diner scene

okay i will stop. this is the perfect novella if you're looking for a fun & spicy time.

these next thoughts may not make sense to you but they make sense to me lmao. anyways, i didn't love that there is no epilogue but marlow's explanation as to why makes sense for this couple & for life in general. it's realistic, which i appreciate. i would say closer has a happy for now ending🖤

Thank you to Marlow for sending me an ARC of her novella from the 15th Street Series!

I GOBBLED THIS SHIT UP!!! This short story had me invested from start to finish, and I could not put it down. I read it in one sitting and wanted so much more!!!

Marlow absolutely NAILED the friends to lovers trope. The tension was jumping off every page, and I found myself rooting for them from the beginning. The friendship, the internal dialogue, the pining, the banter, the spice!!! Everything was immaculate. I’m not kidding. A lot of people have said this, but I’m not usually fond of this trope, and I have zero complaints. This book delivered on all fronts!!!

I’ve been a fan of Marlow since reading her first book, The Lazarus, and this novella just solidified that I will always read anything she writes.

I can’t wait to read more from this series!

Five fuhking stars for Marlow. Once again, proving why she has become a “permanently send me ARCs” and “auto-buy” author for me.

If you’ve read Locker’s debut book, The Lazarus (Lazzy to the besties), this vibe is different in the 👏🏻abso👏🏻lutely👏🏻 best way. Closer reads so incredibly smoothly.

I have this resounding opinion that novellas will have huge plot holes or no plot at all because, let’s face it kids, they’re working with very little page real estate, BUT that’s not the case with Closer. I felt like I knew what I was getting going into it - 24 hours in the lives of her MCs and that was it. Locker did however cram a ton of realistic (for my bolder crowd👀) experiences into those 24 hours though. AND THAT EPILOGUE. Exactly what these babies deserved.🖤

Thank you M for this ARC for my honest review. Congrats again babes. 😘

Okay, when Marlow says that she's writing a whole new series I obviously am excited about it… even if we weren't in the same world of Lazarus, I loved the first novel by her that I was excited to read more from her . And I have to say…I didn’t disappoint.
This book is a part of a brand new series (15th street) and each book brings us to a new couple. In this we have a short story about Ray and Miles, friends since childhood, and how both of them nourish feelings for each other, but are afraid of repercussions. I loved the story, and it's a good choice for those who wanna read a short story, with slow burn and also spicy scenes too

This novella is just.. wow 😍

I forget how much I love friends to lovers and Miles and Raylene just showed me that to me again. I’ll never get over how protective they are of each other, how that even though it’s a novella the story flowed so well, and the spice in this baby? *swoon* where can I find a Miles for myself?

Thank you Marlow for this little sweet & spicy read! I can’t wait for your future books 🥰

Wowza what a ride!

I really appreciated the connection I had with Ray and Miles from the get go. It didn’t feel rush or too awkward (as much as it can be for a novella) due to it being a friends to lovers romance. The amount of soft moments between the two like when they would softly brush hands, get goosebumps and reminisce on past memories brought a smile to my face.

It gave me moments of anger because of the antagonist (yes there is one in this novella that makes sense) and I literally messaged Marlow saying I wanted a beat down lol.

Also the spice?

we got…
In the bathroom at a party?
side of the street on top of a sports car??
in a whole ass diner???

Y’all it has it all.😌🤌🏼

This novella was everything it needed to be!

I’m one of those people who needs a lil character depth with my smut to be able to enjoy it. And Raylene and Miles felt so real!
Like how did these characters had so much depth by page 16 - they grew up together and you can FEEL their history in the pages.
I loved lil Ray’s pear shaped hips and her ‘don’t let them know you care’ mentality. And Miles who perhaps sometimes cares too much. 🥺
The characters are immediately obsessed with each other and god DAMN the tension sizzles on every page. And once they snap, boy does that slow burn pay off 😏

In short, I loved it. Perfect lil easy readin novella.

I am honestly obsessed with Miles & Ray and haven’t stopped thinking about them since I finished this novella. And listen, I’m usually not a friends to lovers gal, never been my favorite cup. But Marlow has single-handedly renewed my faith in the entire trope because the tension and yearning between these two was delicious.

Every moment was packed with electric possibility, building, teasing, and the payoff (ahem spice) was perfect and hot while staying true to the characters’ reality of being kind of awkward and anxious-to-ruin-things college kids. It was relatable in the best way, though I will never be able to go into a diner (IYKYK) without breaking a sweat again. Woo boy! Somehow this novella felt like a full length love story and yet left me both fully satisfied and hungry for more.

I can’t wait for the next!

4.5🌟

Closer is the first novella in a collection of interconnected standalones in The 15th Street Series. Now, I know a lot of my fellow dark romance lovers out there have already said this, but it rings true for me as well; friends to lovers is not usually my cup of tea, but of course if Marlow Locker writes it I’M READING IT! Closer did not disappoint; I was immediately drawn in and invested in the relationship between Raylene and Miles. I almost wish it wasn’t a novella because I totally could have ate up 200 more pages of them! It was meant to be a lighthearted, palate cleanser and it really hit the mark for me! After reading several long and heavy reads it picked me right out of a slump.

What you can expect:
💜 Novella
🤍 Childhood friends to lovers
💜 Slow burn
🤍 Dual POV
💜 College party
🤍 Steamy scenes

I was kicking my legs and giggling like a little girl, swooning over Miles and Raylene’s relationship. It was just so friggen cute and sweet. Like where has Miles been all my life I NEED him! Every time I would catch myself in a daze admiring how sweet Miles was he would say something like; “That’s it, take it like a big girl. Take it all down.” EXCUSE ME SIR WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO BE THAT MF SEXY AND CATCH ME OFF GUARD LIKE THAT GODDAMN!!

“Every moment that our skin touches awakens a new boundary to cross, as if these rules were written in chalk, and along comes the rain.”

I am so impressed with the intensity of emotion provoked in me and how much I connected with the characters in such a short little read. Marlow had a way of weaving the story to make you feel like you had just read a full length novel that happened over a course of days not just a twenty-four hour period.

I absolutely loved Raylene, she was such a relatable fmc and I wanted nothing more than for us to be besties.
“She collects individuals like rare trinkets.”
Because same girl!^^^

Closer has my favourite epilogue ever written. I had no idea how much I needed to hear those words.

“Love like your life depends on it. Don’t wait.” -Marlow

I truly believe Marlow can write any genre and it will always come out amazing and beautiful.

I personally don’t have anything against friends to lovers if it’s done right and OH BOY, this one was done right😩 I don’t want to say too much, but even if you don’t enjoy friends to lovers, I highly encourage giving this one a shot because the tension is just THERE & everything about Ray & Miles was perfect together. This novella was also executed perfectly where nothing felt too rushed or like you didn’t have enough details. It had the perfect mix of plot, backstory, and spice, however it is important to note that this is NOT pure smüt. If you want a high tension novella with lots of build up & history, this is your book. We also got introduced to another pair in this one that I cannot waittttt to read about.👀

Features:
-friends to lovers
-dual POV
-✨TENSION✨
-one night novella
-public sëx/exhîbitioñism
-college students

She thinks she's merely comfortable.
She's fucking sexy without ever trying.

If you're an avid reader. You know you find yourself looking for something fun/easy, like a novella, to palate cleanse between books. THIS IS IT. I love novellas, but sometimes I can't help but still have high expectations. Closer does not disappoint. It was fun and HOT. I found myself smiling throughout and it was just an absolute joy to read.

Friends to lovers
My neighbor next door is hot but also happens to be my best friend (that's a trope right?)

There is something to be said for a novella that is short but still somehow manages to create the most delicious tension. Now this is not all smut. It leads to chapters dedicated to it, but the ride is worth it. Ha. Ride. Raylene knows the ride was worth it. Sorry, that was an insider, iykyk and you'll only know when you read it.

Miles and Raylene are just overall likeable characters. It is dual POV - because you can't have friends to lovers without it. Marlow always manages to write the best dialogue and even though this is a fairly quick read, you're left with lines that stick. The writing style makes it easy for you to put yourself in the scene. Like I said, it was a fun read AND it will be available on Kindle Unlimited so no excuses.

It will be a series of interconnected standalones and of course I can't wait for more.
