Xejn mhu sejjer kif suppost fl-2020. Lanqas f’Malta. Id-dinja donnha waqfet iddur fuq l-assi tagћha u ddeċidiet tagћmel fattiha.
Elizabeth gћandha biss ћmistax –il sena, kif tista’ tibża’ mill-borra? Minflok mehdija tibbrawżja fuq il-Magna tikteb il-lyrics gћad-diska l-ġdida tal-Jitterylemon, tfittex aktar dwar Fay Wray u King Kong, u tiċċettja ma’ Jamie fuq iċ-Chatterbox.
Interesting take on a Malta suffering from the ravages of global warming and from a surfeit of personal technology. Don't make the same mistake I did by reading the title in Latin - the 'Magna' in the title is in Maltese and refers to this ever-present machine that I consider a super advanced version of Facebook. The novel is a touch post apocalyptic but not quite, centering around a weird but appealing heroine who needs to solve the mystery that haunts her past while coming to terms with her changing feelings for her best friend.. The ups and downs of the life and loves of ordinary teenagers are all the more interesting thanks to the Maltese twist while the roller-blading side plot is great fun and creates the image of a Malta with very real gangs. The descriptions of our island as it copes with temperatures that jump from a snowy 0 degrees to the sizzling 50s are intriguing and... maybe... not too far fetched a possibility in our future. Though marked as YA lit, don't dismiss this just because you are not in the targeted age-group. This one kept me up till I finished it and the plot line never lets up.
