As a Christian songwriter and music producer, Jenny Phillips has released over 27 albums and has shared her love of music across the world, speaking at over 1,100 events in 23 countries and selling over a million CDs. In order to reduce the stress and time commitments that naturally come with a music label, and so she could focus more on her young family, Jenny left her music label in 2011. She now offers her music for free on www.hislightmusic.com.
When Jenny's children began going to school, she turned toward another one of her passions—education. Jenny began homeschooling in an effort to provide a faith-based, high-academic education focused on building noble character. Not wholly satisfied with any curriculum she could find and deeply concerned about the loss of good literature in our world, she founded The Good and the Beautiful.
Jenny lives in Utah with her husband and five children. In addition to music, motherhood, and good literature, Jenny loves family history, gardening, traveling, and exercising. She is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but she enjoys working with people of many faiths as she shares her multi-denominational curriculum, rejoicing in the common good that all Christians share.
I am listening to the CD that goes with this incredible book. The five songs at the beginning of the CD are beautiful and the overall parable is inspiring.
The section "Reflections from Jenny" toward the end of the book touched my heart. She describes how she felt after having her second child; she was wearing baggy clothes and had spit-up on her shirt when she saw a catalog with a picture of a beautiful woman. As motivation, she posted this picture where she would see it often. "And I ... was miserable. Every time I looked at it, I was filled with a longing to look like that." And then she read Moroni 7:41. "What is it that ye shall hope for?" "I realized I had really been missing the mark. Moroni told us what we should hope for: 'I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ ... to be raised unto life eternal.'" (Moroni 7:41) "I took down the picture of the girl and I threw it in the garbage. I immediately typed up a list of attributes of charity as outlined in Moroni 7:48. I hung up that list. That became the model of what I wanted to be."
I loved the quote by David O McKay which said, “tell me what you think about when you do not have to think, that I will tell you what you are.” I love that thought! However, I do wish the author would have used a different example in the parable instead of the very traditional view of modesty.
What a great allegory of true beauty, and what our Heavenly Father sees as true beauty. Actually read this a long time ago but just realized that id never marked it as read.
This story is fabulous! At girl's camp we listened to the Cd and afterwards received a key necklace and a scroll to help us remember this story. At first, I was a little confused about which girl was Jane and which was Charolette but after a few chapters, I figured it out. This parable was easy to understand and is a good way to help girls and women remember and learn to serve our King through qualities and actions that are pleasing to our Heavenly Father instead of serving Satan. Through the story, it is showed that we can't serve both the King and the Scholar. I love how Jane realizes this and begins working extra hard to serve the King and help the orphans and as she does, she becomes happier. This story has a wonderful ending and I especially love how the King shows Jane a glimpse of her future if she gets the rest of the keys. This is the parable of a true story, one that can become true for every girl on this earth if she follows the commandments and does what's asked of her by her Heavenly Father. I want to always do this so that one day I will receive the reward of having my own eternal family and 'kingdom' when I return to Heavenyly Father! :-)

This book has such a great message. It's an easy read with beautiful illustrations also. You can read it in about an hour or less. My sis-in-law read it and liked it so much, she bought a bunch in bulk and has been passing them out. Luckily I got one, and have been loaning it out too! It's written in parable form, and the King (Heavenly Father) has a certain course that if we follow, we can become truly beautiful and complete. A scholar (satan) comes into the kingdom and introduces his own version of what the world deems 'beautiful'. It's wonderful and I highly recommend it to women and girls of all ages.
This is such a beautiful book! I cannot help but think of how much this helped me to see the importance of modesty, love, virtue, and other prevalent values. It is definitely a book that needed to be written and I'm so thankful for it! Chapter 7 gets me every time *spoiler alert* Polly is the sweetest child, and she reminds me much of my little niece. Every time I read this book, chapter seven makes me cry. This book is absolutely incredible, inspiring, and motivating. I definitely recommend it!

This small book was one of the best I've read recently. It's a short, fast read and has a message that priceless. This story about a young girl that finds meaning in a meaningless world helps shift the reader's perspective to what matters most. This was an incredible read and I feel like I should read it often, just to keep the correct perspective through life. I love it!
Our stake Relief Society used this for a RS meeting. It is beautiful and has such an important message. If we could really remember who we are and what makes us truly beautiful (charity), then we would find much more happiness and peace. Such a powerful parable and so timely.
The songs on the CD are really beautiful as well. I especially love "What Matters Most".

A short and easy read. A friend gave this book to me a couple of days ago. I read it in about 20 minutes. I loved the message that is in it and would like my daughters to read it.
This is a lovely parable for life and following the King's path instead of the world's. I read it to my kids and had a great discussion with them about what it all symbolized. It was great!
This book has a great message for girls and women. It uses a parable to show how beauty comes from within, the type of person you are and not from the vain things of the world.
