When Abigail was twelve she discovered something in the woods behind her house; something that would destroy everything it touched. Fifty years later, after America is nothing but a memory, Mr. Brown shows up to interview Abigail in her London home. Haunted by his own terrifying dreams, Mr. Brown must find out why this is all happening and if there is anything they can do to stop it from obliterating human-kind. The conversation that transpires will either be the salvation he is so desperately seeking or the haunting realization that nothing can be done for any of them.

Yay for the Kindle that has reintroduced me to the power of short stories! I read Displaced whilst working out at the gym (there’s nothing like getting lost in a book to overcome the agony of the X-trainer). I really enjoyed the story. It’s one of those that drags you right in and won’t let you go until the end. Elle LaPraim has a very read-on writing style. The story tells of how an alien sphere has appeared on Earth and how humanity reacts by wanting to destroy it. Most people respond with fear and hostility but the narrator, the first to discover the sphere and the alien trapped within it, is the only person that feels differently. To her, the alien in the sphere is a thing of beauty.
There are some interesting undertones in this story, namely themes of prejudice against things we don’t understand. I like how Elle LaPraim grounds her story in real life to make it more like something the reader can relate to. For example, the narrator talks about some of the alien films she’s watched, such as E.T and these references help us to identify with the reader.
Overall, a well-written and enjoyable science fiction short story.

I give it four bookworms.

Elle Lapraim's short story Displaced is one of beauty. Abigail discovers a rare occurance in the dark forest by her house. All she wanted was a friend as she saw in the old movies. When Abigail is interviewed by Mr. Brown she recounts her first encounter with the object of everyone else's fears. She was the only person that brought peace to the situation through the eyes of the child she once was. Elle weaved a tale so true to today's society on how we as a people view 'outsiders', usually fearful, angry and full of violence, Abigail was not like everyone else. I loved that about her, we need more Abigails in the world. The only downside to this story was at the end I craved more, I wish it went on, but that's why it's called short story. It was well written, nicely choreographed and very smart. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful story with a beautiful ending.

This is a fascinating little story about a journalist interviewing a woman about her secret history with a mysterious object that is slowly consuming the world, and the alien creature that lives within.

I think what strikes me the most about the story is its tone - It feels almost like a lament, not so much for things or places lost or destroyed, but of the wonder or innocence of a child's view of the world. The author seems to describe a world where if only we could keep that open heart of a child we all had when we were young, then perhaps the world wouldn't be such a terrible, depressing place.

It's a short story, and doesn't take that long to read, but it is well worth the time to take it a little slowly and savor. I'm going to go back and read it again.

Completely different! I forgot how much I love short stories until Displaced. A solid four stars, four and a half really but that's not an option.

Loved the plot line. I actually fell into the "bleeding heart" side. I felt for the "dome" and wished it was left as is. But, alas, that is the tale here I assume.

Leave beauty to be what it is, if it kills you then at least you didn't die in vain. Mess with it, feel it's wrath.

(Sorry for the "quotes" I was trying not to hide because of spoilers. :P)

I absolutely loved this short story by one of my favorite authors! I think this one might be my favorite. I could see it being a movie. What I love about this story and all this authors short stories really, is that they always have a great message that makes you think. I love that.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK, if you have read her other work, I think you will agree. Now I just have to wait till her next book comes out.

I follow this authors blog and find it completely inspiring so I thought I would try reading one of her short stories. They are only like .99. I am so glad I did. I absolutely loved it. It was definitely one of the best short stories I have ever read and I love short stories! I can't wait to read more by this author. I loved that I had no idea where it was going but I was completely captivated the whole time.

A terrific, vivid and human science fiction short story. There are some lovely images when the story is told from the childhood memories, which make the story rich and charming and I found the central concept and the story telling compelling. I will be reading more from Elle Lapraim.

I have four words for you: This was too short!

The concept was brilliant and the writing well constructed, what was missing, however, was the rest of the story!

I long to know what happened, we're left on a fluffy warm emotional note, which I feel didn't do the short (but really should be longer) story justice. I felt a little like the guts of this story were still percolating inside Elle's head and unfortunately not on the ebook page I was reading. This left me feeling a little underwhelmed by the whole story.

I don't think you could make this into a 3 book trilogy or anything like that, but it needs a little more.

Well worth the 0.99c on Amazon for a quick and well constructed story.

Another wonderful short story by this upcoming author. Most of the things we have read from this author have been Fantasy, it was a nice change to see what she could do with Sci-Fi. What I love about this author is that she always surprises you with the point she is trying to make in her stories. A highly recommended book.
