Backwards waterfalls. Shape-shifting gods. A walled city protecting a tree with the power to grant wishes. Can a small group of teens navigate this new world, find a way to save humanity, and re-open the portal to Earth? “Return within six months or humanity dies” were the last words Garrett heard as the portal snapped shut behind him. As he and his sages scramble to escape the carnage of warfare and dragon fire on an unfamiliar planet, they encounter a girl who knows one of their names… Breanne Moore. Breanne finds herself in the unexpected position of leader, partnering with one faction of Karelian humans and plotting to overthrow the wicked king of another. But a great war is coming and all of Karelia is in danger – including Metsavana, a magical tree the size of a mountain. Jack Nightshade has dreams of revenge, a three-headed dragon, and all the power of the universe. Saving worlds isn’t part of his plan but ruling one is, and he will stop at nothing to get justice for his brother Danny. Even if it means destroying everything and everyone to get what he’s owed. Now the sages must convince the humans of Karelia to come together for a greater cause, journey to the father tree, and stop an army of giants and dragons. To win the coming battle, each of the sages must find their true purpose and discover within themselves power they never knew they had. Otto Schafer grew up exploring the small historic town in central Illinois featured in his first work of fiction, The Secret Journal. If you visit Petersburg, Illinois you may find locations familiar from the book. You may even discover, as Otto did, that history has left behind cleverly hidden traces of magic, whispered secrets, and untold treasures.
Otto is currently working on the third book in the Wrack and Ruin series, set to release in early 2025.
He and his loving wife reside in a quiet log cabin tucked away in the woods. You can often find him sitting out back by the koi pond, whittling words into stories for his readers.
What an epic ending to an epic series! Otto Schafer is such a great writer and his novels flow so seamlessly, which is why it is so easy to get caught up in them. I loved every moment of this amazing adventure of Garrett and his friends. The world building through the whole series was excellent since it merged the world we know with a hidden magical one.
Schafer’s characters are so relatable, and I really enjoyed the banter between Garrett and his friends. Despite the desperate situation, Lenny always finds a way to be comical by teasing David. The different types of magical creatures were fascinating, from dragons to elves to moving trees!
This book was action packed and made me want to keep reading after each chapter. The only thing I would change, which is probably a personal opinion, were the romantic relationships feeling so rushed. Several characters fall in love fairly quick. Garrett and Bre’s relationship is the only one that really grows over time. However, with so many intense plots throughout this series, I can understand that romance was definitely not the main focus.
THIS SERIES IS PHENOMENAL! If you have not added it to your TBR, you need to do so right now! I’m extremely sad that the story has come to a close, but Schafer’s ending did leave a possibility for an offshoot book or series! Regardless, Schafer’s books are a must read, and I can’t wait to see what he writes in the future!
This was an epic ending for an amazing series. It was action packed and kept me guessing on how it would end. It gave me all the feels through out the book and still surprised me. I am shocked and … sad(? not sure honestly) with how one of the characters … well can’t really get into that without spoilers… but it has still stuck with me. It probably couldn’t have happened any other way though. The ending is always bitter sweet as we say goodbye to characters we have come to love… and some we love to hate. I feel like the author has finished his story, but has ended it in such away that he can revisit and give us more stories if he so chooses. I love when that happens. It always gives me hope that we will one day read more about the characters we fell in love with. If you haven’t started this series yet, you really should start. I still don’t trust the trees….
FANTASTIC!!! I feel like I should rise for a standing ovation!!!
This series has been the best ride. I have totally enjoyed each book! It’s not often that I can say that about a series!
I wondered how everything would work out in the end, and I am so pleased that everything not only worked out, but all the different questions and concerns were thoroughly answered and explained. I feel completely satisfied and ABSOLUTELY IN LOVE WITH THIS SERIES!!!
The Last Gift is definitely my favorite book in the series! All the world building is freaking awesome and so fascinating! The different creatures are really cool and unique! The characters, especially Garrett and his sages, grew so much throughout the series, and I’m really going to miss them. The pacing was so well done, I couldn’t put it down!! So much is always going on and I was so invested in how things would turn out for them all, even the creators!
I promise that if you enjoy fantasy, adventure, magic, fantastical creatures and worlds, romance (PG), etc…then you will LOVE this series! I would die to see this series on the big screen, it would be awesome!!! Shafer is AMAZING and I look forward to reading what he comes up with next!!!!
I marvel at this author's ability to weave such a heart-pounding, heart-wrenching, heartfelt adventure that had me not only on the edge of my seat but turning pages as fast as my fingers could grip them! This whole series has been a delight from book one through book four, where our author left us all pining for more, and boy, did Mr. Schafer deliver! This fifth and final book, not only tied up all the loose ends, but surprised me on so many different levels with the character development and the fantastic storyline. I CANNOT recommend this series ENOUGH! Five stars all the way!
I just finished book 5. This whole series is amazing and I’m thinking of rereading this already. The lessons inside these books are ones the people of this world should and need, to learn. Lessons of acceptance, friendship, perseverance, and many more; but the most important, is love.
This last book was so full of adventure, life lessons, friendship, and held so much hope and joy. It was an amazing read and the author delivered a beautiful conclusion to an engaging series!
Thank you so much for this series I couldn’t put it down. I have been in awe with the story and world building! Please keep writing and I’ll definitely keep reading
So sad for this story to end but alas all do. But if they ever wanted to make a series out of these I pray they’d do it justice!! One of the BEST series I’ve read in a long while! I’m glad I had the honor of befriending everyone in the story. Great job Mr. Shafer!
Not only was Otto Schafer's God Stone Series my number-one read of 2022, but it's also one of my favorite YA series, period. The Last Gift is the fifth and final book for this group of heroes, and what an ending, indeed. I loved this world, these characters, and this epic adventure. There is no doubt I will be rereading these stories time and time again.
