Title: Trees to Paper
Author: Inez Snyder
Illustrator:
Genre: How to book
Theme(s): following a process, steps, creating things
Opening line/sentence: Paper is made from trees.
Brief Book Summary: This book is a simple book about the process of making trees. It starts with trees, and explains what happens in order for trees to be made into paper.
Professional Recommendation/Review #1: A nice and simple book to show the process of how trees are turned into paper. The book has larger print and simple, non-complex words.
Professional Recommendation/Review #2: This book is about how trees are made onto paper.
Response to Two Professional Reviews: These reviews are short and simple, similar to the book they reviewed. They comment about how the book shows a process being done, and how the book is simple. They also talk about the non-complex books, which is perfectly appropriate for the age level this book is recommended for.
Evaluation of Literary Elements: The literary elements in this book were perfectly appropriate for the age range of this book. The words were simple, and there weren’t too many on a page. The pictures were photographs that were clear and sharp in color. The real life photos for a how to book is a great aspect, because children can picture what’s happening based off real pictures.
Consideration of Instructional Application: Since this book is for younger readers, I would keep the instructional application to a minimal. One thing you could do is talk with students about what surprised them; did they know about all the steps it took to make paper? Another discussion to have could be for them to make a list, as a class, about all the purposes of paper. What are different things paper’s used for, what would we do if we didn’t have paper, etc.

Summary
Have you ever wondered how we get paper from trees? This book takes you step by step and tells you how we get from rough wooden trees to smooth paper. Each page has colorful pictures to show the paper- making process. The book also contains a small glossary of important terms that are needed to better understand the process.

Response
I gave this book a 5 star rating. It provides important information that students need to understand the paper- making process. The pictures were very nice photographs and helps to give a better understandng of what takes place in the process.

This book reminds me of a Physical Science assignment I completed at school. I worked with a group at Purdue to present a presentation on recycled paper. We used the blender to create our own sheet of recycled paper. We presented our recycled paper and talked about the difference between the paper- making process for "virgin" paper and recycled paper.

Classroom Connection
I would use this book for a Social Studies lesson. Students need to know how different things in the community are used to create other items that we use everyday. First, the students can write a brief summary of the book and draw pictures of the paper- making process. Next, I would use this book to help students to think about the benefits of recycling. We can use the blender to make recycled paper as a class demonstration. Finally, we can start a recycling project as a class and encourage other classes to get involved.

Text Complexity
This book is 160 Lexile and GR level G. This book is appropriate for grades K to 2nd.
