Former Chicago Detective Jordan Pierce put his life on hold in order to protect America's secret weapon against the Nazis; The Manhattan Project. But he can't protect himself against the disease eating away at his humanity. Jordan discovers how much of his soul this infection has devoured when he falls in love with the woman who could destroy America. Choosing her, means choosing the monster he's becoming, making him the most powerful man he's ever known.
Every now and then you read a book that totally takes you by surprise; Chain Reaction was one of those books. I have to honestly say that when I read the blurb I wasn’t sure if this was the book for me, but I am so glad I gave it a chance.
Archer did a fantastic job of combining true history and the paranormal element. In Chicago, during World War II, the United States is racing to develop the first A-bomb. When a scientist is murdered, ex-Chicago P.D. detective and current night security, Jordan Pierce, is put in charge of the investigation. Pierce is harboring a secret: eight months ago he was attacked by a woman, and now he needs blood to survive.
I found the character of Pierce to be touching. He is a patriotic American, and believes in doing the right thing. He is also a man confused about what has happened to him, and he seeks the one who attacked him in the hopes that he will once again return to normal. Dr. Gladys Nichols becomes the focus of his investigation when he suspects her of selling secrets to the Germans. The only problem is she is the first woman he has been drawn to since his change. The author conveyed really well Pierce’s turmoil between duty and love.
This was such a well written book, and you can tell a lot of research was done to make sure historical parts were accurate. Spies, espionage, The Manhattan Project, and murder with a paranormal twist: what more can you ask for in a book? Chain reaction is the first book in the Phenom League series. I am glad to see this book continue on into a series, because I want to follow Jordan Pierce as he learns more about his new existence.

Chain Reaction takes place in 1942 during WW2 where John Pierce is head of night shift security for the US Government to help protect the Manhattan Project in Chicago but he wasn't always a security guard. Eight months prior John Pierce was a Detective in Chicago and found himself attacked in an alley, he hasn't been right ever since. He thinks he's been infected with something, he no longer has a need for food and drink, smoking addiction is gone and by midday a bizarre sleep overtakes him. The only thing he can think to do is take another job that's lower profile and hope to find the person who attacked him and get answers. His main concern now being someone finding out about him and wanting to experiment on him.
When showing up for his shift he finds out there has been a security breach and one of the Scientist working on the project has met an untimely death. Pierce is put in charge of the investigation but is having issues with the main suspect Scientist Gladys Nichols. Pierce feels an undeniable sexual connection to Gladys but he also feels she's a spy for the Germans. Will Pierce be able to overcome his infatuation with Gladys and not turn his back on his Country or will the fear of his co workers finding out about his infection stand in the way?
I thought this was a very good mix of Paranormal and History. There is tons of action and when Pierce's imagination takes off with images of Gladys it will have your toes curling! Through out the book there are references to actual events that happened in History which make for an interesting read and I love that the book is dedicated to the Men and Women whom fought for our Country. There's a lot of times and people who take them for granted and I don't think they get the gratitude that is owed to them. If you love to read Paranormal and History your going to love this book!
This was a very fast read for me because I could not put it down. This story is full of twists and turns, suspense and a who done it mystery all wrapped up in a paranormal/historical element. I give this book 5 stars.
This book takes you back to the time of WWII and The Manhattan Project where Jordan Pierce is the head of the night shift security. This story follows his investigation into a possible spy network and the torture and murder of a scientist working on The Manhattan Project. Jordan has connections with MI6 as well as the Chicago police force and eventually the Phenom League so it is interesting to see how all these play out in the story. I really enjoyed the history in this story as well as the mystery. The time period chosen I think is a good one for this story since you can work in so much. The paranormal element in this story was also a mystery as we weren’t sure what Jordan was afflicted with. I like in the end Jordan finally starts to discover his abilities but I think more is to come.
I really enjoyed learning about Jordan as a person. He is a pretty normal guy and a Chicago cop until he is attacked in an alley and he believes infected with some sort of disease. Jordan is on a revenge mission to track down the one who infected him but when he finds her, revenge has to take a back seat to protecting his country’s secrets. Dr. Gladys Nichols is the love interest and a scientist that works on the Manhattan Project. She also has a brother who works for MI6. We are left up in the air as to Dr. Nichols loyalties until almost the end of the book but it was fun guessing.
Also I liked the paranormal elements in this book. They were a little different than most books are with different powers and origins. The Phenom League seems to be a group of people with extraordinary or supernatural powers who grouped together to do what they feel is right and just in the world. They are on no one’s side but their own.
This was a good introduction to the series. I am very interested in hearing more about the Phenom League and can’t wait to read the next in the series. I also am kind of curious about Dr. Nichols brother. How did he end up in MI6 and will he be associated with the Phenom League also? Does he get his own book or will be mainly following Jordan and Dr. Nichols? Can’t wait!!!
Thank you for this amazing book and the chance to review it for you!!

When I first started reading and realized the story took place in 1942 surrounding the Manhattan Project I was wondering what the heck I got myself in to. Then I got to the third page and was wondering what the heck took me so long to find this book!!
This is an amazing novel. History, Myth and Romance combine to make this a suspenseful, adventurous, fun read.
Jordan Pierce joins the security team protecting America's secret weapon; The Manhattan Project. Working nights is the only thing he can do after an attack that rips his humanity from him in one horrible night eight months before. Murder, espionage, secret teams with extraordinary powers, twists and turns, all of this combines to make Chain Reaction a CANT PUT DOWN read that has you dyeing for more and wishing the story would never end. We follow Jordan as he works his way through suspects, finds the woman who brings out in him emotions and urges he never thought possible, realizes he is much more than he ever thought possible, finds that his every move was countered by the mysterious Phenom league, and realizes he isn't quite as quiet as he thought.
I can not wait to read what happens next with Jordan, Gladys and Ethel.
To sum this book up in two words: SIMPLY FABULOUS.
I seem to have a knack for picking up the one writing style of story that is not at all my favorite. The dreaded (to me) first person point of view story. I almost turned this one back in, because I didn't want another first person, but I figured I'd give it a shot. If I struggled too much, back it would go.
Needless to say, I am glad I didn't. A little known thing about me, unless you have known me for years and my fandom tastes, is that I have a fascination with various parts of history. Since I was a little girl, the American Civil War/Wild West period is a big one. After that is the World War II era, something my mother got me into. This is one of the reasons why I was compelled to give this first person story a chance.
What I enjoyed the most about this book, is that despite the point of view, it draws you into the story pretty quickly. The author, or rather authors as T.C. Archer is the pen name for writing duo Evan Trevane and Shawn M. Casey, has done is combine the espionage intrigue of World War II with the intrigue of the supernatural world in a unique way- by not only tapping into the idea others have done over the years regarding super secret agencies creating "superhumans", but also interweaving that concept based on actual events that took place.
This book is very light on the romance, but it doesn't take away from the story at all. This story is very much about the overall mystery that our hero, Jordan Pierce, is trying to solve while accepting certain things about himself that he doesn't quite yet understand.
Despite the point of view in which this is written, I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a good paranormal mystery.
Before I filed the report, I had a call to make to Dunning Asylum for the mentally insane and tell them to reserve a room for me.
Detective Jordan Pierce, former Chicago PD, hasn't felt the same since he was attacked in an alley months ago. No longer able to stay awake in the daylight, he has strange abilities that he can't explain. While trying to balance finding his attacker and his job as a security officer at the University of Chicago, he gets caught up in a murder investigation and finds out he's not the only one able to do strange things.
Set during the Manhattan Project time of WW2, the book is full of tidbits of history incorporated into the paranormal story. Pierce's "powers" and nature are slowly learned, though fairly easy to guess, as if the reader is learning about this side of the world with Pierce. The suspense/detective angle was done well, keeping readers on the edge of their seat for what would happen next. The side characters help solidify the world, revealing themselves through Pierce's interaction with them.
There were several pieces of the story, though minor, that were not resolved, such as Andy's role in all of this. Also, as this was the introduction to the Phantom League, there was a lot of hinting about other people with other powers that didn't necessarily show up in the book, leaving readers to wonder about the "others" alongside Pierce.
Full of action, thrills, and potential, Chain Reaction drags readers into a world and time they only thought they knew.
Chain Reaction is book based during World War 2 and is an alternative version of history. Jordan Pierce is a former detective now turned security guard. You find out that he was turned into a vampire one random night and that is why he now works the midnight shift and had to leave his previous life as a detective. Pierce finds himself longing after a woman, feeling something that he hasn't felt since he was turned.
He gets himself involved with the mysterious Phenom League, a group of misfits freaks that have similar abilities to Pierce. Chain Reaction has many exciting events that take place and honestly speaking it really surprised me. Reading the synopsis, I wasn't really sure what to expect from the story as a whole. It's really a story like any other that I have read, it has history, paranormal and romance all wrapped into one awesome story line.
I really liked how this book was from a male's perspective, it's not something I normally read but I loved how descriptive it was. Chain Reactive is the first in the Phenom League series and I look forward to reading more. This book was really exciting to read and you can tell that there is just so much history involved and so much research that had to be put forth. I'm really glad that I got the opportunity to read and review this book. Thank you so much T. C. Archer for providing me a copy of this book and I look forward to reading and reviewing your other works as well!
First I want to thank FMB Blog Tours for allowing me to be a part of this tour. I was excited to see this book posted for a tour because I had been wanting to read it but i wasn't to sure about it. See I love history books mixed with a little something but I tend to get bored easily while reading them because the history takes over the plot but T.C. Archer has done a great job of never losing the plot but only adding to it. At points I went and googled some of the stuff because I was not sure it was real but low and behold it was!

I was given a copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review.
This is a fabulous story! I absolutely LOVED it!
Former Chicago Detective Jordan Pierce is a fantastic character. He is now working as a security guard for the Manhattan Project, after an attack eight months prior that infected him with a disease that seems to transforming him. He is confused as to what he is becoming, and what the future holds.
Set in the 1940's during the Second World War, this is a fascinating tale that kept me riveted from the first page. There is danger, romance and intrigue in this book that will satisfy those who love detective novels, but it has a paranormal twist. The story is well written and flows fabulously. The mystery and suspense builds all the way through the story. The ending left me wanting more!
As I was reading, I was struck by how T. C. Archer has taken true historical fact and mixed it with a bit of fiction to create a paranormal story that sort of reminded me of The X Men (the movies, not the comic books). I am now looking forward to reading more of The Phenom League series! I do not recommend this book for the younger reader due to the more mature themes in this book; although there is no sex, there is violence. However, I highly recommend this book as a "MUST READ"! - Lynn Worton (WaAR)
If you like fast moving, suspenseful, a little dark and a lot of emotion including hot sex and a hero you can root for this is your book. The novel tracing the events that have overtaken a Chicago Detective with a long history of police work, military and civilian, John Pierce. The story actually begins 8 months earlier during WWII. Pierce has been attacked in a dark ally. He begins to develop strange symptoms leading him to believe he has been infected with a dreaded mutation which is changing him slowly into a monster. He has taken a new position with a group protecting the secret WWII mission called The Manhattan Project. He meets a Doctor he is dramatically attracted to and when events endanger her he tries to control both what is happening to him and threatening her life also. This is a hair raising adventure that will compel you to turn the next page and make it almost impossible to lay the book down. The author is great at pulling you into the story so you feel the things you are reading are happening to you or developing before you as you watch. You will love this well described and fast paced book. This is an author you will need to keep on your read list.
What a great book with historical facts. This book is based in the 1940′s during WWII. A great setting for a book especially during that time when there was spies, espionage, war, experiments and who knows what else happening around the world.
Jordan is trying to find out who and what has infected him to where he does not need food any more. Wow that is a great story line for the character I have in my head. He is strong but the silent type that likes to stay behind the scenes.
I apologize to the author, tour company and my readers. I am having a hard time writing the review for this book. I honestly just cannot come up with the words to describe this book in a review. I know it does not tell you much but I actually enjoyed reading this book. T.C. has a way with words that draws the reader in.
The writing was fantastic. It isn't often that I pick up a book and notice how well written it is. Wonderful imagry. Loved the mix of historical WWII and paranormal combined with the fast paced plot. There aren't a lot of books that have all these elements.
I felt like I could understand Pierce's situation and the moral dilemmas he was wrestling with.
I was left wanting to know more about this group of paranormal superheros. Where did they come from? Who else is in the group? I can see a whole series of books springing from this one.
Didn't give it a 5 only because I am a tough reviewer- I almost never give 5s. OK- I just gave one to Stephen King but even he doesn't always get a 5.
Book Review:Chain Reaction by author T.C. Archer I wasnt sure what to expect from this book. This is the first T.C. Archer book I have ever read.At first I was confused as to who were the good guys and who were the bad, this book follows Jordan Pierce as he tries to hide his secret, while working as a security guard and be involved with "spy" activitys. This book has one of the best "transformation" scenes I have ever read.Yes there is a love interest. This book is about spys,Nazis, double cross. It was a fun read.I enjoyed Jordan and his battle not to become a "full" monster.I give this book 4/5 It is a safe read for YA to adult.
This was a very interesting book. It combines history, espionage, science, paranormal and a little romance. The writing flowed and the characters were done very well. I rooted for Pierce from the very beginning. This book will have you guessing all the way through. There are lots of "who dun its" to figure out. Some great action as well! I wouldn't say it ended on a cliff hanger, per se, but it has an "open" ending. I look forward to reading more about this Phenom League!
I enjoyed the historical setting of the action; however, the characters were not fully developed. The focus on appearances was superficial and distracted from the story line. The one character that stood out to me the most was the fireman with the bushy eyebrows.
Overall it had the story-line of a graphic novel without the pictures.
An amazing mix of history, mystery and fantasy. I loved the concept--a man who no longer recognizes himself is forced to investigate a murder surrounding the Manhattan Project. I look forward to reading more from this author!
I listened to the Audible audio version of this book.
"An Interesting, Consistent Story"
CHAIN REACTION was an interesting take on the romance genre. I felt it sounded more noir-ish thriller. There were places I was lost but soon caught back up. The story moved along at a fast pace with good characters. It also stayed consistent in that the reader's style was that of noir, gumshoe who gets involved with the heroine whose good but also bad. There was even something paranormal in the story. It was an overall good listen from T.C. ARCHER and was definitely different with tie-ins from multiple genres.
ROBERT COLTRANE'S performance was really good. At first it stood out and was something different from anything I've heard but he gets very interesting. I don't know how to describe it. He spoke monotone yet it sounded like old fashioned noir. It worked well. I'd be interested in seeing these two pair up again.

Right from the start, I loved the time period and situation in which this story was set. I find anything dealing with WWII to be fascinating and I liked the blend of history and fantasy. I was very intrigued to know more about Pierce's "disease," as well as more about the security breach. This story has many layers, which I enjoyed. The effect that Dr. Nichols was having on Pierce kept me engaged and turning page after page. The authors deserve a huge kudos for such a stunning story. I was completely enthralled in the book from start to finish and the final fight scene had me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait for the next book in the Phenom League series.
The premise of this book looked really promising. It's set during WWII in Chicago with the group working on creating the first chain reaction. Then the main character turns out to be a vampire. OK. But from then on every other paragraph describes the arousal state of his penis. I read about 10% more of the book and finally gave up. I was really disappointed..
