The Watchers Trilogy: Awakening was a Barnes & Noble January 2012 Staff Pick: Nook Books Under $5
After finishing the last in this series, I'm glad I got the books very cheap. Editorial issues were still a big problem. The writing was still poor, using the same handful of descriptions until I just started skimming the book to find out how it ends. The ending was, not surprisingly, very predictable. I still liked the story as far as entertainment value, but the characters barely grew and were not well-rounded or easy to relate to. I was hoping that at some point the constant "OMG I WUV YEW AND UR SSSOOOO AWESUM!!!!!!" would end, but it plagued the book like fleas.
The constant sicky-sweet declarations of undying and eternal love coupled with constantly having to boot the main character's ego stood at the forefront of the premise, grossly overshadowing the ever-shrinking details of the plot. Ana, the main character, bumbles her way through the entire story, constantly whining about how unattractive and unhelpful she is when she's not brooding over Athen's every move and mooning over how "amazing" he is. She came across as a complete attention hog, desperately clining to her lover's coat tails like an addict. The relationship between these two characters is borderline masochistic, as Athen seems to exist in this story solely to simultaneously boost Ana's constant need for support and to remind her just how imperfect she is compared to him. And please do not get me started on how often each character had to enthusiastically congratulate another character in an obnoxious and obviously superficial manner. All of this, to me, needs to be toned down to be believable or relatable.
The bad guy was very easily defeated to the point I wondered why it took three books to end him. This enitre trilogy really should have been condensed into a single book; there was absolutely no reason to draw this out for as long as the author did. If she would have cut back on the ooey-gooey scenes of "romance" and whiny, unneeded character interaction, there wouldn't have been a need for three books at all. I am, to say the least, very disappointed in this trilogy. I doubt I will purchase anything from this author in the future.
The subject of this book is awesome and even interesting. The writing is so horrible. I have never read such terrible writing. It is so disappointing to see such a good idea for a trilogy carried out with such bad writing. There were many moments when I wanted to throw the book across the room, but didn't because it wasn't worth breaking my Nook over. One of the worst was when everyone kept calling the main character sweetie. The author failed to make me feel anything for the characters. This book is under the bargain section for the Nook and rightfully so. I read all three hoping by the third that everything would get better. It didn't. Big waste of time. Maybe a competent author can rewrite the series so it is worth reading.
Cataclysm is the third book in The Watchers Trilogy. As with Legions, this third installment starts of basically right where we left off - Thank God! With "losing" another main character I don't think that my heart could take much more. Thankfully it doesn't take long for us to figure out what happens with the lovely Arie... But I'm not going to even hint at whether or not her plan works. Read the book! ;-)
There is a lot of action packed scenes that don't always turn out the way you want them to. Lives will be lost. You have been warned. Although, you should be used to that by now... if you've been reading the books.
That is all you get for spoilers in this book. It's the final of the series and you are not allowed to find out how it ends unless you read it! I have to say that there is a lot that happens in the book and I couldn't be happier with the ending.
Miss Karice, you did a fantastic job! I absolutely loved these books and I am soooo excited to start reading The Witch Avenue series! It is actually my next books to read. You're lucky though, I usually don't even start reading a series until all of the books are out. I am very much an instant gratification kind of girl, and I don't like waiting! lol I am sure they will be equally as fantastic as The Watchers has been! ♥
I've enjoyed the whole trilogy. Yes, some of the writing was so so, and a few flaws in the storyline, but a true love story for her soul mate and mankind in general.

Review: I love how this cover beautifully ties in with the two others in the series. The pieces of the puzzle from the first two novels fell into place beautifully. If you have not read the first two novels in the series, Awakening and Legions, you must do so now before picking up Cataclysm. You can still read this review, because I am going to keep it spoiler free, which tends to get kind of hilarious for the people who have read it and know what I am talking about. Maybe I won’t get distracted by Athen like in my Legion’s review yesterday, ya well I’ve already failed. *pictures a shirtless Athen in head*
THANK GOD I didn’t have to wait this book to come out. I might just have died an untimely (yes that is a word, I couldn’t believe it either) death. When I was reading no joke I had a chant of “ANA ANA ANA ANA ANA” going in my head!! I just really wanted my girl to win!! After the load of information in the past couple of months she has been given, I can’t believe she has processed so well! Again with the emotional intensity! I feel like this is one of the things I always talk about with Karice! I live her books out and Cataclysm was no different. Does that make sense? I really hope it does!
I adored all the action and violence! I had no idea so much was going to be packed into 303 pages! I cried my eyes out during the part where we learn about a new couple that is introduced relationship. I don’t cry often guys, and oh my goodness my heart hurt for them. That so never happens, because I have no idea what love and loss with relationships that aren’t family are like. That is a freaking long sentence for ERIKA has never had a boyfriend. Why the heck do I always go into my love life, or nonexistence of one, in these reviews? I don’t do it with anybody else’s books!
The thing that grabbed my attention about this series, is that there is nothing like it out there. Sure there are angel books out there, heck there are mountains of them, but none of them have gone to the places Karice Bolton has taken her characters. Add to that the intense relationships and original characters and you are left with a true work of art. I cannot wait to see what Karice has in store for us next!
P.S. KARICE THE ENDING!!! HOLY CRAP! You always do something I don’t expect!!!

Cataclysm is the final block in this trilogy, and it didn’t fail one iota. BUT if you have not read Awakening or Legions, the first two books, please read them now. There are massive spoilers below if you chose not too.
The final leg picks up right where Legions left off. Arie is gone, and Cyril is on his way back to Athen and Ana to begin the awakening process. The hoards of dark demons are also increasing in their numbers, and this leaves much to be answered for. The dark demons are now actively recruiting innocent humans to join their ranks under false pretense and hopes of immortality.
Ana is torn between the secret Arie has forced her to keep in order to save Cyril from turning to the dark side, or coming clean to end his pain. The truth is, Arie made the conscience choice to be reborn in hopes to divert his attention from trying to sacrifice himself. In doing this she also gets to test out the memoirs, which have always been thought a myth, to see if they help to speed up the awakening process. If successful it could turn years apart into mere days, and this could become a major turning point in the fight against the dark demons.
Will our loving quad of white demons succeed in over throwing evil once in for all? Does Cyril forgive Arie for her deceit? Can Ana come to terms with creating an army of white demons to even the playing field? Will she find the good in the darkness, no matter how evil the person or demon may be? You all know the drill!
I was really, really saddened knowing that this was the final book. I teared up at the end knowing I would never read about Ana, Athen, Arie, Cyril or even the adorable Matilda. But I know all good things must come to an end, and thus with tear filled eyes I said good-bye to these characters who I have felt were enticing, interesting, beloved, and well written. Throughout the series I’ve been a bit angered when I’ve read the views of others who have compared them to another popular paranormal book. I’d like to say that I disagree with them, and I do wonder if they actually read the stories.
If you remember from my review of Awakening, I had pointed out that I was unsure about a story on fallen angels. Karice Bolton has changed much of my view with her stories alone. It’s not that I fear stories based upon religion, mythology, or any of that. I just never expected such a heart lifting story about love, compassion, and doing what is right for the greater good to come out of one trilogy based upon a race of immortals that were shut out of Heaven. The white demons do what is right, with no reward, all in the name of love. If we humans could only do so much we could make this world a much better place.
Cataclysm is the final book in The Watchers Trilogy, and I am a little sad to see it is over. It's a strange thing when I read a series I feel like I get to know the characters personally. Once the series is completed it’s like bidding farewell to friends of mine, I always hate saying goodbye. Maybe one day when the story has faded from my mind I can pick this series back up and hang out with Athen, Ana, Cyril, Arie, and Matilda once again.
So now that I have finished the trilogy I can say without a shadow of a doubt Cataclysm was my favorite book out of the three in The Watchers Trilogy. This book was LOADED with action, I was blown away. In Legions and Awakening you get some action, but nothing that compares to the battle that rages on inside the pages of Cataclysm. It took me a mere day to read this book, because I was so into the story. As a reader you are reading this book knowing the final battle is coming, everything that has been happening all comes down to this book. The epic battle between good and evil is coming to an end. *signs* I ate it up!
Ana's character really has developed in this book, she has become this warrior that is first to leap into battle. When I say she leaps into battle I don't mean some chick fight she is throwing down with knives, and fighting with all her rage. Now it is odd to say Ana has developed because has she developed or is she becoming the Ana she once was before she had to be Awakened? This was just a little question running through my mind as I was reading. I think heard a prequel is in the works, and I am excited to read about Ana before the Awakening to see if her character was always this epic or if in this book she was just sent over the edge.
Now Ana did develop in the ring with the demons, but I kind of wanted her and Athen to have a bit of a fight. The relationship between the couple is incredibly perfect, almost too perfect. When the two would interact Ana would be worried Athen would be mad, but he never would. I wanted a little passionate fight between the two of them. To be honest this is kind of the same with Cyril and Arie and all too perfect love. Even the most perfect relationships have fights, and I think it would have added to the love they have.
Oddly enough the break out stars in this book for me are Noah and Vanessa. This is a love and loss story that seemed to steal my heart. Now you won't have a clue who I am talking about until you read the final book, and I want to maintain a spoiler free review so I won't tell you. I would LOVE to read a story strictly based on the romance and demise of the relationship between Noah and Vanessa. I literally got choked up.
This book is a YA so I recommend this entire series to to YA readers. The characters are older I believe twenties, so I think this will also appeal to adults that are content with a clean read.

If you remember from my review of Awakening (and later Legions), I had pointed out that I was unsure about a story on fallen angels. Karice Bolton has changed much of my view with her stories alone. I just never expected such a heart lifting story about love, compassion, and doing what is right for the greater good to come out of one trilogy based upon a race of immortals that were shut out of Heaven. Cataclysm is the final installment of The Watchers Trilogy and sadly I have to say goodbye to the characters that I got to know fondly. I never thought I would get hooked to this trilogy. I cannot help but envy Athen’s love for Ana and vice versa which stands the test of time and of Cyril and Arie. The bond among the four of them as a family is unbelievably strong and I cannot help but wish we have that kind of selfless love. This endearing quality together with their struggle to keep their families together and to stop evil from spreading on earth without expecting any reward from above was the ‘pull’ for me.
Many interactions between Athen and Ana are quite cheesy. (But I refused to be put off!) Athen is so affectionate and his love for Ana is just too good to be true. I guess we all need a bit of Athen in our lives once in a while.
This third installment is full of action from beginning to end and as the title of the book implies, the plot revolves around a ‘violent upheaval which brings about a fundamental change’ (Wikepedia definition). I guess Bolton compensates for the lack of action in Awakening (Book 1)
Bolton brings in another couple in the plot – Noah and Vanessa – their story stole my heart so to speak the way Finnick and Annie’s story in Mockingjay (Hunger Games) gripped me. I was hoping for some divine intervention to give their story a happy ending.
Overall, I won’t hesitate to recommend this trilogy to anyone. The plot is simple but fascinating. All I can say is, without being overly critical to Bolton’s style of writing, she manages to capture my imagination.
It is not often that a book will make you say “Wow! I didn't expect”. Karice Bolton's Cataclysm is such a book. Cataclysm is the aptly named conclusion to Ms. Bolton's supernatural adventure Watcher's trilogy. In the book we continue to follow fallen angels/white demons Ana, Athen, Arie and Cyril as prepare to lead their fellow white demon into the climatic battle against Azazel and his army of dark demons. From the very start of the book you be hooked as there is a seamless transition from the end of the previous book Legions. There is plenty of action that keeps your attention as our heroic group uncover and attempt to thwart Azazel's plan of building up hs army while raising their own forces. As always Ms. Bolton adds a cast of rich vibrant characters to an ever-growing cast. One of these new characters is Noah, a white demon that lost his soul-mate to the forces of darkness, who proves himself as a valuable to the group with his skills at intelligence gathering. Returning is the evil seductress Lilith who we first meet in the Awakening in one of Ana's vision. Topping off this cast is our heroine Ana the eternal optimist that finds the power to make her visions come true. One of my favorite scenes is when Ana first discovers the way that the dark demons are building their army by turning humans. At first she is shocked and horrified at the sight she is witnessing. She later realize though that with the help of the other white demons they can use this to their advantage. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has read the other two books, likes romance, adventure, supernatural or believes in the existence of angels & demons.
A stunning finale to a fantastic series. Karice Bolton has created a series of books that is a breath of fresh air in a genre currently saturated with vampires and werewolves.
I like how the books take up exactly where the last one left off and I also like how not everything is just laid on a plate for you, you have to connect the dots yourself. Most of the time you will get confirmation of your thoughts further down the line. This book is full of depth, drama and suspense. You are still getting new characters introduced whilst learning even more about the ones you already "know".
I simply loved the ending and the big battle scene (I don't think that's going to spoil it for anyone, it's been building up for 3 books!) is written so incredibly well, I found myself tensing up and went back and re-read it once I had finished the book. There is more understanding in this book, of Ana's feelings, how she sees things, how the others see things, of the world in general that they inhabit and the mortals they are trying to protect. It shows that sometimes a decision has to be made and the choices given aren't always clear cut.
Twists and turns aplenty ... again. Suspense, drama, romance. Absolutely brilliant. RECOMMENDED TO SIMPLY EVERYONE.
This is the final installment of the Watchers trilogy. It took me a little while longer to get into this book than the first two, but I read on because I really wanted to see how Karice Bolton would settle the brewing war and find out if the characters would live happily ever after. I think the romance between Athen and Ana is certainly the most powerful aspect of the book (for some reason I can't help but hearing A Thousand Years by Christina Perri in my head every time they have an intimate scene). I expected this book to have a predictable ending, but there were a few heart wrenching twists. Although the grammar and editing mistakes were still there, I think the final book did an excellent job of wrapping up Ana's mental and emotional journey. By the end, she has grown, inspired those around her, and taught the reader about being a good person and doing the right thing even when the rest of society seems to be moving in the opposite direction. I definitely recommend the Watcher's trilogy as a whole. Likable characters, beautiful settings, remarkable love stories and the battle of good vs evil combine to make this a thoroughly satisfying series.
I rather enjoyed this book. Once I read the first two, I just had to know how it would end. If you did not read the first two books, you should do so now.
I first must say I really grew to love all of the characters. However, I did have a few problems with Ana along the way. I think Karice Bolton did a good job at making a connection. I think there are some questions that are still unanswered. I still have a few questions about Ana and her family and how it all works. I must say I found myself really hating the dark demons. I loved Legions and Cataclysm probably the most because of the action in them. This book was quicker paced than the first and I enjoyed it that way. There was a lot of action and fights between the white and dark demons. This left me wanting more. I also had such a hatred for Lilith. For this reason, the ending was such a twist for me, but I really loved it. I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys romance and mythical creatures. I have never read a book about demons before and I think this was a great place to start!
I loved this book, so much happened and all the questions were answered in this last book bringing the series to a satisfactory conclusion. It is hard to review something I really liked without giving away too much but I will try. So many twists and turns and Ana has developed into one kick ass warrior angel who inspired thousands to follow her into battle. Lots of action and battles and a greater truth is revealed over who Ana really is and why Lilith is in her life. Arie and Cyril were a wonderful couple who went through their own difficulties fighting to stay together and not allow the darkness to win. Matilda was endearing and she added something special to the story. I will miss this series as it was an unexpected delight one that I had put off reading for far to long. A surprise ending but one that I think is fitting and best described the relationship of Ana and Athen leading them to this natural progression.
Pretty good. The characters seemed well developed...however freaking Ana was "all good" I dunno. I just don't see that. Or maybe I don't like that. I like the doubt or possibility or "weakness" in all mankind to be jealous and hateful. Its what makes us human. To have her be the only one make the good decisions is crappy. There is a four unit main character theme going--go with that--and the ending was a wrap up if I ever heard of one.
Lilith had some good left in her so she killed The great and powerful demon--which by the way she has been working with this entire freaking time--for her sister (who she has hated up til this point). And noah kills himself by stopping Vanessa his soulmate from trying to get inbetween Lilith and the great powerful...crappy crap crap crap. Sigh...I liked book two lol
This is where the book ends in this triology. I foud her training still fun to read. I enjoyed watching her come into her own, and growing up a bit into her new role. I liked going into another world within the regular mundane human world to be refreshing. When Arie left and came back... I thought that was cut WAY too short and almost lame. It could have been emphasized a little bit more, it's like 'whoaaa everyone can remember now, just leave stick it post its around and voila'. Oh well that was that. The final battle scene I felt was cut a bit short, and could have been enhanced more to give it the grandeour that books 1 and 2 had worked them up to be. Even with all of these follies, I enjoyed this book and do recommend it. Great quick read, and quite an escape from life as we know it.
It took me awhile to read this book, but only because it was a goodreads win and I had to order and read the first two books before I read this one. Once I squeeze those books into the free time I had between my course load I was finally able to read Cataclysm. I really enjoy books with strong character development and I felt this book did that. I love how all the books tied together so fluidly. Each book making want to read the next. This book finally gave me the answers the questions the other books posed. I love a great female character like Ana, how she has grown so much through the series. Her Athen’s relationship did not become annoying as some do in a pnr. The action was really great in Cataclysm, it made hard to put it down. I am sad to see it go but I look forward to reading more from this author.
As I read through the book, I felt like I knew where the book was going. I was surprised by the end as I did not see it coming in that way. I do think the character development seemed to stagnate in this book and not grow more than in the first two. I really liked the love emotion Karice has put into her characters. It is too bad in real life, people do not love others with that much intensity. The world would be a much better place. Over all I would give this book a 4, but the series is a 4.5. I would like to see a second trilogy, maybe with the kids of these character as they continue their parents work in a mortal society.
I highly recommend the series for all ages. It is G rated...
I jumped immediately from Legions to Cataclysm because I was completely hooked and I still am! Don't want it to be over. The writing was beautiful and the overall message was brilliant. Ana's strength prevailed as she was faced with one tough decision after the next. She grew into her role as leader from one book to another, but her strength and resolve to look for the positive in all things and people was really moving. This isn't a book or trilogy to breeze through because the nuances are what make it special. The ending battle was long but worth it. I can't say enough about this trilogy and to think it started off a free book I probably wouldn't have necessarily chosen otherwise. Recommend the trilogy to people who enjoy innocent paranormal romance with a spin.
This book was pretty good. The plot line was great, and it sort of ended how I wanted. There was a lot of sacrifice in this one,, and it tore Ana apart! The part I didn't like was it left off on a cliff hanger and there isn't another book talking about these same characters. I really want to know what they do and what their adventures are after they finished everything. Although a book that has a similar plot line sounds good, I just want to know more about these characters.
Pros: Nice plot line, and a lot of action in the fights. Good build up of Noah's personality and all about him. Also, this book had a nice amount of pages.
Cons: finished on cliff hanger and not another series/book about these same characters.
I enjoyed the first book of this series so much! I loved the author's unique take on angels and demons and she truly is gifted with prose. I enjoyed the slow unraveling of the mystery. The second book, however, was a huge disappointment. As talented a writer she is, her storytelling is lacking. Conflicts are much too easily and quickly resolved and good ALWAYS triumphs evil. There is no wonder of the outcome. It got very boring. I attempted the third book, because I just wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, and because I hate leaving anything "unfinished," after all it is a trilogy! But I just couldn't bring myself to make it past about 20% mark. There was no mystery, intrigue, or drama.. :(
The first two books were better. This one was good, but I thought some parts were a little more drawn out than necessary. I also believe that morals and values are VERY important in life, however, dragging it out over 3 chapters was too much for me.
Overall, this was a good book. The reason for the four stars rather than the five stars the first two books received: The ending of the story was to be expected. The drilling of taking the moral route was overdone. The great points of the book were the twists that I didn't see coming. These twists really added to the story. If you read the first two books and you have an idea of how the third one will end, you are probably correct.
That said, I think my expectations were too high for this one. The first two blew me away, couldn't put either one down between the constant action, amazing descriptions of the scenery, and the quick witted banter between the characters. Somehow, I felt it was lacking in this final installment. Perhaps it's because I anticipated all the plot twists (even the "big" one), whereas the first two pieces of this story kept me on my toes.
I still really enjoyed the story and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys a bit of the paranormal / angels / demons with their romance.
This book gets three stars because it was okay, not awesome, but not awful. I was expecting a more dramatic ending, and perhaps if the plot had been the same but it had been written differently (better descriptions, word choice, etc.) it would have lived up to expectation. The story definitely suffered for lack of an editor and proper formatting. I also could have done without so much of the overly sappy/cheesy dialogue. We get it, she's an angel, Athen doesn't have to call her one every other line for us to remember.
An interesting take on the battle between good and evil... Initially, Ana's excitement was contagious and the book was hard to put down. Naturally I bought the next 2, to see how the story line progressed. The losing and finding of family got a bit redundant and fights were fairly predictable. Also I guess I'm not a fan of ridiculously sappy codependant relationships; supernatural or not that just isn't healthy. For that I guess I'll have to avoid books tagged as romance. Regardless of my complaints I did enjoy the read.
Maybe a generous three stars... This whole last installment of The Watchers Trilogy was one long wait for the battle, which of course had a predictable outcome. I was happy everything tied itself up the way it did, even if it was a little too full of warm fuzzies, wanting glances and threatening demon talk at times. This series makes me want to plan a trip up to Whistler sometime in the near future!
