¿Dónde si no podrían ir a parar?
Sophie Jordan took her adolescent daydreaming one step further and penned her first historical romance in the back of her high school Spanish class. This passion led her to pursue a degree in English and History.
A brief stint in law school taught her that case law was not nearly as interesting as literature - teaching English seemed the natural recourse. After several years teaching high school students to love Antigone, Sophie resigned with the birth of her first child and decided it was time to pursue the long-held dream of writing.
In less than three years, her first book, Once Upon A Wedding Night, a 2006 Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Nominee for Best First Historical, hit book shelves. Her second novel, Too Wicked To Tame, released in March 2007 with a bang, landing on the USA Today Bestseller's List.
Wow! Yumm! Perfect! This hit all the right notes for me. A sweet vulnerable but definitely dishonest h and an embittered alpha rogue who turns (deliciously) cruel and hurtful on learning of her machinations. She’s his hated half-brother’s widow - pregnant with her husband’s baby! He has some axe to grind and she has lots to hide. Undeniable and heated chemistry, some exquisite cruelty, bittersweet angst and a good plot line made me wish it'd never end. Loved it and loved the a-hole jerk who does a good dog in the manger impersonation!
"Once Upon a Wedding Night" is the story of Meredith and Nicholas.
OK, I confess, I read it because it had the most gorgeous cover art! Just *chefs kiss*
The heroine has recently been widowed, and realizes that the house she lives in goes to his cousin, a famous rake. Having vowed to take care of her independent aunt, ailing father and dependent househelp, she decides to fake a pregnancy. Things take a turn when the cocky hero turns up, and shakes her life to the core. From discovering the truth about her relationship with her husband, to eventually her pregnancy, he taunts and teases her, yet cannot keep his hands away from her. He is keen to get her remarried, but when a suitor proposes, will he let her get away?
This had its fun moments but overall it was a good one time read. The hero was in denial until the very end, and did his best to push away the heroine. If he had realized his feelings a lot sooner, this would have been much better. The heroine was easily seduced.
I normally don't give 1-star reviews. Generally I give 4 stars, 5 if I really like the book, and 3 if is not that good, because it's someone work and they took time with it, but this one deserves a 1-star.
So, this is my first book by Sophie Jordan. I found her because of the The Debutante Files series, which I very much want to read, but I keep a record of read all books in order of publication because some character might appear in the other books and series and I want to know who they are. So I started with her oldest HR series, and - apparently, if you take by the "Thank you" part - her first book. And boy, it sucks!
For now on I will discuss the plot so: *Spoiler Alert*
I didn't really care for Nick. The beginning he was at least kind about the "situation" she was in. And then later He was extremely rude to her. And he couldn't make up his mind- she had to find a husband but he would get angry about her choices. She needed to pursue this man but he would get upset if she showed interest. And the way and reason they got married? Basically outing her. And then what happened after they got married. Leaving her just like her first husband, but Nick's argument about how they're different is because they slept together? His logic was dumb. It wasn't okay, AND! the fact that we're supposed to forgive him because of his past... Not a good enough reason, that was not okay how he treated her.

Widowed Meredith Brookshire tries to devise a scheme to keep Oak Run and her family together after the death of her estranged husband. Her brother-in-law, Nick Caulfield, is the next male relative kin to accept Oak Run but has no desire to collect his title or the estate. That is… until he meets Meredith. Something sparks within him when he meets his brother's widowed wife. A battle of wills and passion ensues in Sophie Jordan's debut novel.
I enjoyed this book, but I wanted to throttle Nick, especially towards the end. I like that he's alpha, but sometimes it can be too much. I liked Meredith, and her scheme wasn't that outlandish; even though it was deceiving to try to keep Oak Run in her possession.
Overall, I give this book a 3.5. I look forward to reading Portia's story next with a buddy reader, Whitney!
Once Upon A Wedding Night by Sophie Jordan has been a book I bought quite a while ago at a used bookstore and I swear its been on my bookshelf for months and months, so I decided that I needed to pick it up because it is Sophie Jordan and before I knew it I was swept away in this angsty romance and it is angsty but so fun. I just got a kick out of these two. These just love to argue with each other and its pretty entertaining to watch. And quite frankly, Sophie's older books are the kind of angst I miss seeing in historical romances now a days. She just did it with such flair and drama that you get sucked in plus add in some good ole charm and emotion and you get hooked even if you want them to just make up and get on with their happily ever after. Well these two just don't make it very simple.
The story sets off with our heroine, who has recently become a widow. Its been five months, but she never knew her husband. He never even consummated the marriage and made it seem like she was too unattractive and unappealing for him to do the "deed" as it were. So she lived her life in the country with her aunt and ailing father, content with making sure the estate and the tenant lives were prospering. But then she hears that her husband's step brother has been found and will be taking over. She is fearful for the uncertainty of the future and what will happen to her aunt and father when they will have no where to go? So she reluctantly agrees with a foolish plan made up by her aunt to claim that she is pregnant and what begins as a ruse to save her family turns into a lie that haunts her and ruins any trust Nicholas may have had in her. Now he wants her off his hands, planning on marrying her off to a simple English bloke and never see her again. But the more he interacts with her, the more he realizes he wants her as his own, but will his past force him to lose sight of true love...
What a story, and one that I fell in love with in the beginning. I will admit that not all angsty romances do it for me but for some reason this one did and I wasn't even in the mood for angsty romance but Sophie Jordan somehow won me over with this sexy yet sassy read. Both characters have their own reasons for mistrust and dislike. Although I understood why Meredith acted the way she did, although she hated herself for doing so. She is a fighter though and passionate and I liked seeing her stand up for herself and to stand up to the hero. We see both sides of the situation which is what I liked about this 3rd POV. I did enjoy their arguments because it was pretty entertaining. I just kept being amused by their antics especially when its so obvious how much they truly like each other; they just won't admit it. :) Of course we have some side characters that really add a bit more spice to the story to win you even more over to this book. It has a older style of regency romance that I found to be refreshing and in depth of emotion when you least expect it to happen.
Overall I found Once Upon A Wedding Night to be a stimulating, feisty and sassy romance with plenty of smexy times to satisfy!!
This book genuinely made me so angry, This is an older book so I'm gonna talk about plot points. SPOILER WARNING
So Meredith is a widow and out of fear for her aunt and father with dementia, she invents a pregnancy so that they don't lose their home to the heir. Nick the new heir is the whole problem with this book. He is such a piece of shit, I don't even know where to start. So obviously Nick finds out about the fake pregnancy and is rightfully angry. But then he stays angry for pretty much the rest of the book. He continues to say mean things to Meredith. Later in the story Nick decides that Meredith will find a husband and she'll be out of his hair, but he continuously gets angry at her when she tries to find a husband!! Then when she is proposed to he humiliates her and drags her off to elope. And through all of this I keep thinking there is going to be an amazing groveling scene so he can make up for all this crap. The last scene in the entire book he essentially just walks up to her and she forgives him I don't even think he ever says the words "I'm sorry". Why am I suppose to like this guy?

This book started out promising. It actually a great love story about a woman married to a man who happened to not want her, therefore has left her and their marriage unconsumated for seven years. He dies and leaves her a widow desperate to hold on to her home and livelihood for the sake of her family. So she pretended that she's pregnant and the baby may the next heir in line for the title and land. The dead husband's half brother comes in to claim his title (albeit reluctantly) and was duped into thinking she was pregnant with the dead husband's child. But the plan fell to pieces and he thinks her a devious liar.
Basically a story of misunderstandings and the fear of loving and being loved. It was good going until towards the end when everything seems to fall into place too neatly and easily. The ending is so unsatisfactory that i am actually angry that i spent hours reading this book only to get a boring ending. Like....what the f**k? Where's her backbone?
Yeay: 1) good plot and storyline...well, for 90% of the story. 2) great secondary characters, mainly Portia. 3) my heart went out to Meredith, poor woman. So naive, to think that she lacking all those years. 4) the sexual tension is sizzling
Meh: 1) terrible ending, so sudden. She could have made him beg a bit....after all he made her go through and after all the insults he threw at her. She practically sighed in relief when he finally admitted he loves her. 2) hero was an a-hole for most parts of the story but yet he was still redeemable. But the ending, aaarrghhh....he got her back too easily. I would have loved it if he were to squirm in regret and humiliation for what he did to Meredith. 3) heroine had some TSTL moments. Ok...so she's a sheltered naive woman in more ways. But she came across as a bit stupid and desperate at time. I so want to like her but just couldnt. She relents too easily. Puts up a believable fight but surrenders under slight pressure. Frustrating.
So because of the ending, i cant give more than 3 stars. Annoying ending!
I'm so annoyed with Nick! He's such a stubborn. He forced Meredith to marry so she wouldn't be his burden. He attracted to her and made love to her, but still, he wanted to marry her off. When she finally accepted her suitor's proposal, he refused and told him that she had been intimate with him. So he brought her to Gretna Green forcefully and married her. When he woke up in the morning, he realized he could be fall in love with her, so he left her in the country and he came back to London. Meredith tried one last time that their marriage could not ended up like his parent's, so she tried to make him jealous. Her plan succeed! But he only trashed her suitor and hiked back to London, because he felt she could undid him if he met her. She heard that he was on his way to London, so she went after him. They met on the road and he ravished her, but he still left her even after she confessed her love. I don't know how, but he ended up on the slum he used to live and he fought people there. He said he couldn't die before she knew that he loved her too. So he came to her. The end.
What a hero is that? He left her for so many times, but he just came back like nothing happened. Not enough groveling! He's beyond stubborn and he certainly didn't deserve her!
This one was simply acceptable. There's not anything particularly amazing about it… I felt like it took way too long to build up and way too little to build down, if you understand what I mean. It was just… Oh, she's lost her husband, she's really sexy, he's really sexy, LET'S KISS!, I love him!, I love her!, (spoiler=required drama), I LOVE YOU, is the very last scene.
Cute. But not fantastic. Simply, okay. I mean, it was a lovely premise. But it drew out too long for my taste, and I've never been one for cheesey end scenes where they say:
**SPOILER**
"Oh, I love you," and then, "Oh, I love you too, and, by the way, we're having a baby."
"LE GASP. I really do love you!"
-Kiss-
I just can't get into it. Give us an epilogue, if you really want!
İlk defa bir erkek karakterin zeka seviyesinden şüphe ettim. Önce kızı evlen diye tehdit et, zorla sonra damat adayı karşına gelince o benim diye hiddetlen. Manyak herif :D :D Kitap çook hoşuma gitti , karakterlerin arasındaki gerilimi iyi yansıtmışlardı ama biraz fazla uzatılmıştı sanki .Merry'in başka şekilde davranmasını beklerdim. Sonuçta aşırı gururlu bir kadındı. Neyse Jordan'ın okuduğum ilk kitabı sanırım. Başarılı.
Edit: Amerika kapağı ne böyle!Bayıldım. Keşke bizde de bu kapakla çıksaydı.
Both Nick and Meredith are interesting characters who play off each other well and arose constant passions in one another. Nick is definitely an alpha male while Meredith is both the naive innocent and the seductive widow. When together sparks fly - both in anger and passion - and you can really feel the chemistry between the pair. However Meredith, although a likeable character, did seem at times to be overwhelmed by such a strong character as Nick and it would have been nice to see her stick up for herself during some of their arguments.
The story moves along nicely always keeping you wanting to turn the page and find out what happens next so it really keeps you hooked. I'm not sure how historically accurate the story line is or if it would actually have been able to happen (the passing of the title before a pregnancy has been determined, marrying your brother's widow etc.) but this doesn't really detract from the story although I believe it might annoy some readers.
Overall, this was an enjoyable historical romance and one which despite its faults you can't help but like. I am definitely looking forward to reading more from Sophie Jordan in the future.
Urgh! I hate this book. I have her other book and I find it interesting. Afterwards, I was searching for her other books. Gosh, now I feel regret. Oh well, I could at least see the difference between her previous and current writing - I prefer the current one. Will write the review soon in my blog.
Y empieza a sentir cosas.
With Lady Meredith Brookshire's abandonment on her wedding night by her husband to claimed he only married her to get his father off his back, upon his death, she makes up a story that she is pregnant so that she can keep Oak Run and insure her father, aunt and herself remain comfortable and safe. Nicholas Caulfield, the new heir, is actually relieved that he won't have the title for long. However, when he discovers her lie, Meredith's aunt steps in and convinces Nick that the best way to handle the situation is to insure that Meredith is married off so she won't ever have to bother him again. As the book progresses, he learns that Meredith is actually no bother at all and comes to look forward towards antagonizing her, to search for the woman within who is far more than outwardly appearances. As Meredith is put out on the marriage mart, she finds that really... if she can't have Nick, she wants no one else. Plus, no one knows her secret that she is still a virgin. How does she explain that to her future husband on their wedding night. Going to him to ask him to stop this farce, she gets herself in trouble in Nick's gaming establishment. He's furious with her and on the way to taking her home, fury moves towards passion and Meredith knows for the first time what desire and passion really are. When the marriage proposal does emerge, Nick refuses to give his blessing and announces that no one else can marry her because he had compromised her and he intended to marry her himself. He thought he had his heart in check. He would never love a woman and giver her power over him. After much wrestling with himself, he finally gave himself over to her and vowed to stay by her side and love her forever as she returned his feelings.
