Pusod is the Tagalog word for navel. It is where the umbilical cord used to be. The cord where the nutrients of the mother pass on to her baby. This novel's setting is in the province particularly a rice field somewhere in the Visayas. Rice is the main staple of the Filipino meals so the title of the book can actually mean that although it is my own interpretation only. The book used the word pusod four or five times but it meant only the center as in center of the flood, barrio, water, etc.

Overall, a nice Filipino book. Reading the old Tagalog words and phrases gives one a feeling of reading a classic. Classy. It's like reading Shakespeare or Henry James. It is nice to once in a while, go back to the old Tagalog books. Opps, this book is not really old but Landicho (born in 1939) is almost as old as my mother and I oftentimes still hear old Tagalog words from my mother so I kinda miss my mother while reading this book.

So far, the best Landicho for me. I need to get a copy of Anak ng Lupa and Engkantado to get more idea of how is Landicho as a writer.
