Rate this book

It’s busier than usual in the emergency room at City Hospital the night 19-year-old Claudia Stuyvesant checks in with abdominal pain and vomiting. It’s busier than usual because the other doctor who is supposed to assist Dr. Kate Forrester has called in ill. As a result, Kate’s personal and professional resources are taxed heavily, but it’s clear that Kate is making solid decisions that will stand up to later scrutiny. That’s a good thing, because those decisions will be scrutinized heavily very soon, and they could cost Kate a career. Young Claudia dies, and it soon becomes apparent that she lied to Kate about her sexual activity, presumably because her mother was in the room.

Claudia’s overbearing obnoxious father, a wealthy member of the hospital’s board of directors, agrees to a settlement that essentially leaves the hospital undamaged, but he vows to go after Kate with everything he has. And indeed, he does.

As she prepares for her hearing before the state medical licensure board, crucial bits of evidence that will help Kate’s case disappears. Claudia’s chart is altered, and Kate can’t figure out who is doing this.

I really enjoyed the book. You believe Kate has done all the right things, and you’ll cheer for her young lawyer, but this is written with enough talent that you’ll have a kind of sinking feeling as the plot progresses, so water tight seems to be the evidence amassed against her.

It’s a hectic night in the emergency room at City Hospital when 19-year-old Claudia Stuyvesant checks in with abdominal pain, nausea, fever and vomiting. Dr. Kate Forrester is the only doctor on duty. Claudia dies, not because of any neglect on Kate's part but Claudia's father is an obnoxious, very wealthy shaker and mover in New York City and serves on the hospital board. He goes after Kate's license.

I don't know the author's background but his medical knowledge seems up there with being a medical professional. The book was written in 1992, and reading it in 2023 all I kept thinking was the obnoxious father was modeled after Donald Trump. The Mr. Stuyvesant in the book had only one wife and one child but everything else was so Donald, real estate tycoon, wheeling and dealing with politicians, buying and trading favors, sense of entitlement.

Definitely a good read.

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected to. There were a couple things I didn’t care for…author seemed somewhat repetitive at times and for the first time that I can actually remember…I got very irritated with a main character about a dumb decision he made. Fortunately, I didn’t let it cloud my mind for too long. This is a book about a young doctor who is working the late shift in the emergency room of a large hospital in New York, and the medical hearing she had to go through because her teenage patient had died. This book, which was published 33 years ago, gives details of some of the same problems that ERs have today.

A young doctor and a young lawyer fight together to save the reputation of the doctor accused of neglect of her patient. Dr. Kate Forrester treated the 19-year old daughter of a wealthy tycoon in the emergency ward of a large city hospital. When the patient dies, a hearing is called. With the influence of the father's friends and co-horts some of the evidence goes missing and the two struggle to find redemption.

I don't like the author's style of writing: the sentence construction makes it feel as though the reader is being addressed as a child. However I read the book to the end because I really enjoyed the story. The plot was well created medically with the characters behaviour believable and the legal process fascinating.

Henry Denker keeps his reader hoping for justice to the end. Interesting are the medical terms & references. H. Denker has an indepth insight into the medical world & it's politics. His method of controlling & twisting circumstances to suit his characters is ingenious. Not a bad read at all.

Predictable, medically out of date, no real surprises throughout the book - a sitting on the beach read at best.
