साञ्चा: हिमाचल प्रदेश का प्राचीन तंत्र ग्रन्थ

Rate this book
An informative book about Pahari magic and superstition, particularly those believed in and practiced in the district of Sirmaur in Himachal Pradesh India. The word "Sancha" from the title means "Blueprint" or "Map". The original script is in a dead language, which was apparently invented for the purpose of keeping the information secret. Pandit Deviram Pandey, has translated it into Hindi with the help of Pandit Maniram. Despite the secrecy surrounding this work, much of the information contained in it, bears a close resemblance to information in the Yajurveda. The first half of the book is the Hindi translation, and the second half depicts the heroglyphic script of the original dead language. There are also illustrations from the original work. The work is divided into three main sections, covering astrology, medicine, and the lunar calendar. There is also some information on agriculture, curses, and the correct way to calculate geneology.

I bought this book in an attempt expand my knowledge of tribal magic and superstition in the Himalayas. At first it seemed extremely promising as the first chapter seemed to be a catalogue of curses, and the original script which is depicted in the latter pages of the book, does indeed look mysterious and magical. The illustrations are also quite spooky, and demonic looking. However on closer inspection, and after reading through the Hindi faithfully, I realised that the first chapter was actually a catalogue of malefic astrological aspects and conjunctions, followed by a chapter on the beneficent ones, and the illustrations which first appeared to be frightening tribal totems, were actually rough depictions of the human anatomy, and animals. The disappointing part was that I'd already encountered much of the information in my studies of the Vedas and Puranas. The most interesting information I found in the book, was a spell to catch a thief, when something has gone missing. Some of the passages are starkly frightening, and confusing, and seem to be without context. It's possible that it was not possible to translate the entirety of the work, and some of the passages or missing, or even that some of the content was concealed as there is a belief, in the Himalayas, that esoteric lore should not be written down, mirroring somewhat the beliefs of the druids of the British Isles.

I have yet to finish the book, and although I've made Shuddh Hindi, (classical Hindi) my main focus in my language studies, there are still a lot of confusing words, and I often have to stop to look things up, or ask for confirmation. I've also been unable to aquire the first of the series, and it's possible that the two volumes are much more coherant when read together. However it does have some mystique, and no small amount of intriguing information.
