Wolf's Bane

Rate this book
Reece Rutherford’s brain can’t process what her eyes are seeing. A full moon shines on a boy whose body is contorting and changing, sprouting fur and growing fangs. She’s seen it in movies. Movies aren’t real life. But then the werewolf charges her. He pins her against her SUV, his paw pressing against her chest, and she knows she’s doomed until a winged man appears, as if from the sky, to save her. From that point on, her life is forever changed. The bloody scratches heal and a blood-red tattoo, in the shape of a hexagram, blazes in the flesh near her heart, revealing that she is a witch whose powers have just awakened.

Faced with a community of rogue werewolves who'd like her out of their way, a set of powers she never previously knew she had, and a brother and sister to keep safe from literal monsters--as well as their abusive step-father sleeping in the next room--Reece isn't sure her usual self-sufficiency will be enough to pull her through. Fortunately she has Damian, a stoic but sexy guardian who can help her take on her enemies and win. And maybe together they can learn that there's no point going through everything alone.

USA Today best-selling author for The Body in the Attic, as Judi Lynn. I first published writing urban fantasy as Judith Post, but when I switched to writing romances and mysteries, I used the pen name Judi Lynn. I live in Indiana, and the Midwest is often the setting for my books. I love it here! When we got married, my husband and I bought a 1920 small bungalow, and we've never moved. It needed lots of work. We're still working on it. That's where I got the idea for a fixer-upper mystery series. I love to cook, so food sneaks into most of my stories. I include two or three recipes at the end of my Jazzi mysteries.

*I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Reece is attacked by a werewolf and saved by a gargoyle, discovering that she has hidden witch powers. The gargoyles want her help as rogue werewolves are blackmailing people for 'protection' money and if you don't pay, a loved one is turned into a werewolf. With help from captured rogues, a powerful witch and a local werewolf pack, Reece and her gargoyle friends must find a way to stop the rogues from taking over the city.

This was a really good book. The plot was interesting and I liked the angle of the rogue werewolves working like the mafia to intimidate and blackmail people into keeping their families safe from being bitten. Having a rogue pack working to an agenda like this was a bit different from the usual werewolf books that I've been reading. It was nice to have the winged creatures as gargoyles instead of angels for a change. I liked seeing how they were brought into existance and how the responsibility of looking after humans can age them. The addition of the domestic violence sub plot and the magical family roots of Reece helped to develop the characters nicely. And of course there are cool werewolves everywhere! There is plenty of action throughout the book with the encounters with the rogues and Reece dealing with her family problems, and there are lots of great characters to root for.

Reece and her family are very likable though you wish her mother would grow a backbone when dealing with Eugene! Even though you are not meant to like Eugene, I did find him to be an interesting 'bad guy'. Andre was charming and funny, and his flirtations with Hecate were very enjoyable. Hecate was a great character that you warm to straight away and I liked the scenes where she is doing magic and battling the other witch. The gargoyles were fun and I liked the way they interacted with each other. The touch of romance with Reece and Damian was good because it was sweet and not sexually graphic all the time. Sometimes I feel that less is more, and it worked in this book. The introduction of the local werewolf pack was good because you see the Alpha's character changing as he gets to know his new allies and the idea of him being henpecked by his wife was pretty funny.

There was an excellent mix of strong plot, interesting characters, good interaction and witty humour. There was magic and monsters. The story flows nicely without big info dumps or boring bits, keeping you entertained the whole time. I'm very much looking forward to book 2 in the series.

Recommended for urban fantasy, werewolf and paranormal fans.

I got a copy for review in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't really knew what to expect of this book when I picked it up, but I ended up really enjoying this book. It's a fresh and original read and just the kind of book i was in the mood for. The story is about Reece, a young women who finds out that werewolves exist and much more, like gargoyels. That there where gargoyels in this story was one of the things I enjoyed about this book.

The story is kinda nice, it's fast paced and I wanted to keep reading. Although sometimes I think it was a little bit too fast paced. The story just goes from one event to the next, and there seemed to be a little too less time for character and world build. The story is certainly the main focus of the story and luckily it's a good one. There's also a bit of romance and action in the book.

The author created a nice and original world, it does has supernaturel creatures, but the plot is certainly different. In the beginning I had no idea where the story would go and I kept being surprised. I also liked the writing style, despite there being some serious topics the book still felt like a light read.

The only minpoint about this book is the fact that we don't really get to know the characters. I did got a feel of who they where, but there are many characters and I felt it difficult to really get to know them. I did like the characters, Reece is a likeable lead character and she has two adorable half-siblings, who I couldn't help but love.

To conclude: a nice and original read. The story felt kinda light and kept me reading. The only minpoints are the fact that the story get's a little too much attention and the characters and the world building fall a little bit short. That said I still really liked the characters.

Wolf's Bane is an enjoyable read with action, suspense and a little romance. It has the usual cast of characters for a paranormal romance, witches and werewolves, but with an interesting twist, a gargoyle. Who knew a gargoyle could be so yummy? This is my first time reading a story with a gargoyle as the main character but it won't be my last.

Reece is a martial arts teacher who is constantly called by her younger brother and sister to rescue them from their abusive father. On one such mission, Reece encounters a young man who changes into a werewolf before her eyes. Before she can comprehend what is happening, the werewolf has attacked her. A mysterious winged man comes to her rescue, but Reece's life will never be the same. Damian, a gargoyle, will open Reece's eyes to a world she didn't know existed much less a part of. They will have to learn to work together to save the city from rogue werewolves.

I enjoy Judith Post's style of writing, and this was no exception. She does a great job of developing each character. Reece is a strong character, who was thrown into a difficult and dangerous situation, but didn't let it change who she is. Damian is a guardian. His mission is to save others. I like how they learned to work together. I enjoyed this read and look forward to the next installment.

A very surprising book. When I first got it on kindle it was just meant as something to hopefully help pass the time until I could finally go to sleep. Ya, that was a bad idea. I ended up getting really into the story and loved the combination of gargoyles, witches and werewolves. It ended up being so good that I had to make myself turn kindle off so I could get a few hours of sleep. This story is definitely something that surprised me. It's very different from the usual paranormal romance books that I've read in the past but in a really good way. There's several different couples and many hilarious moments to give you some relief throughout all the tense moments. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books from this author.

This was my first time reAding this author. I didn't find it as good as I had thought it would be. I didn't think it was that well written.

A paranormal romantic suspense featuring werewolves, witches, gargoyles and 'others'. The story takes place in Bay City where the good guys 'good weres, witches and gargoyles' are fighting the bad guys 'rogue weres'. The good weres are led by Wedge but it is unknown who the Alpha is of the rogue weres.

The rogues have styled themselves on the mafia and are blackmailing prominent businessmen and local politicians. If they don't pay up, one of their loved ones is deliberately infected whereby only the strong survive. Those that do survive the fever are quickly incorporated into the rogue 'pack' where there is strength in numbers. Newbies, as they are referred to, do not carry the were gene and so do not realise they are being lied to.

Reece becomes aware that werewolves exist after witnessing a newbie attacking a random stranger in her mother's street. The newbie is killed but during the attack, she sees what she believes is an angel. At the next full moon whilst in her mother's street again, Reece sees the stranger from the month before. Unbeknown to them, he was scratched during that attack and he starts to shift in front of her. Despite shooting the newbie, Reece gets scratched and is saved by the angel who turns out to be a gargoyle 'mankind's guardians'. Damian, the gargoyle, is also injured during the fight and Reece takes him home with her so he can recuperate. It is also the night that she discovers that she is a witch.

Fast forward several chapters and we are introduced to the most powerful witch on earth who comes in the form of Hecate. Hecate who was a friend of Reece's great grandmother, takes Reece under her wing and mentors her. We are also introduced to Andre who is a newbie after his cousin tries to stash some of the blackmail money being paid by Andre's father. As Andre is a newbie, he is invited to stay with Reece until it is safe for him to join Wedge's pack and he is the first of the waif and strays that end up at Reece's Loft. As the story develops Reece and Damian, Hecate and Andre (who also become a couple), the remaining gargoyles and Reece's brother and sister become a pack in their own right and they work alongside Wedge's established pack to defeat the rogues.

Who is the Alpha of the rogues? What is the rogues' end game but more importantly, which side prevails? The story progressed at a steady rate throughout and it was quite well edited for an ebook. I found it to be a very enjoyable read.

A free-read that has hoked me to this author…..

Reece is a central character that you the reader can associate with, who along with other additional leads form the basis for a story that shows that not all heroes get a happy ever after (side story not the ain one). A paranormal story that includes witches, werewolves, gargoyles and others…… Delightfully twisting story-lines that keep the reader turning the pages (or clicking next). Superbly written, this novel is enthralling and entertaining.

The only down-side to this book is the fact that as in the heading I now find myself compelled to look for more of this authors work. Well done Judith Post.

This is a great paranormal suspense book with a little romance! I love how Judith writes especially her character development. Reece is a very strong and independent woman who witnesses a werewolf attack and then a month later is attacked by one herself. This is when she finds out that she is a witch from a long line of strong and good witches. She is then introduced into a world of gargoyles, witches and good and bad werewolves. This is the first time that I have seen a gargoyle for a character and love it, who knew they could be so great!! I did feel like the ending was a bit rushed, but overall this was a great book!!

Wolf's Bane by Judith Post

4 stars

Wolf's Bane brought to me a different view of the paranormal world by bringing in new species like gargoyles & mixing them in with witches, werewolves & hints at "others." It gave me all the things I want in a good story like romance, intrigue, & mystery while mixing old/new world mindsets with a dash of serial killer just for spice. It was It gave just a touch of sexual without being explicit, which I found refreshing. Looking forward to the next installment.

I liked the concept, especially the gargoyles, it was different. It was a little long-winded for me. I got a little tired of it after about 60%. I thought the characters were well developed. I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could. I'd probably try something else by this author, I liked the writing style.

Good book

It was interesting seeing how Reece's powers grew. Damian has a wonderful loving personality but can still destroy multiple shifters at once. Reece's brother and sister are really cute. The secondary characters were great too. I didn't think they'd ever find out who the rogue alpha was either.
