What a treat to read a book about the real inhabitants of Washington, D.C. My family lived in the city for generations as did Ms. Gray's and her recollections of growing up in SE Washington gives me insight into the neighborhoods my father's family lived and worked. Her stories of the past and meeting many interesting and often famous people were second to the day to day wanderings around East Capital Street.
A dream-like memoir of growing up in Washington in the 1920s. I could have done with more tales of her life and fewer flashbacks to her great-grandparents playing at Lincoln's inauguration, for example. The author's life had plenty of material to go around. Ended abruptly, but it was fun while it lasted.
The beginning about growing up in Capitol Hill was really interesting but it started getting rambling toward the end and not so much on topic. I found myself skimming to finish.
