An encounter with a strange medallion leaves sixteen year old Gestalt possessed by the spirit of an ancient Demon King, making him a key player in a war between the Demon King and the Goddess of Life. Unfortunately, the Demon King wants to destroy the world and the Goddess wants to enslave everyone in it! With the aid of a talking teddy bear, a grumpy demon dog and a unicorn princess who wants to marry him, Gestalt embarks on a journey to stop the Goddess’ sinister plot and find a way to get rid of the Demon King — yet, he must also rely on the dark power of the Demon King in order to stand a chance against the powerful minions of the Goddess. Can Gestalt resist against the corrupting temptations of the Demon King and save the world, rather than destroy it? Is it even possible for a mere human to stand up against the power of a Goddess?

I really enjoyed listening to this book. It was a fun adventure into the fantasy world of Pandemonia. It's about a boy named Gestalt who buys an amulet that transports him into another world. The amulet is possessed by the soul of the demon king. From the moment he is thrust into the demon world there is non stop action. When he gets to Pandemonia Gestalt must use the power of the demon king to defeat the Goddess of Light. While there Gestalt meets many unique characters. There is Jofur the stuffed teddy bear who is an elemental. He is imprisoned with Gestalt in the beginning and before escaping they make a pact and he becomes Gestalt's familiar. Jofur is a jovial and clever character. He always has a magical trick in his tiny top hat. Then there is Zaria the unicorn princess who prefers the shape of a human but still has her horn. She is from the valley of the unicorns and speaks like a valley girl. Unknowingly Gestalt asks her to marry him when he makes a wish for her to take his hand to leave a cell when he is rescuing her from the prison. Rebel is the eye patch wearing Great Dane who is the captain of the demon army. He has fire power and can surround his entire body in it to attack an enemy. He is loyal to the demon king and by default Gestalt he's also a bit of a grouch. I thought this book was a lot of fun to listen to. The narrator did a great job with all the voices and personalities of the different characters. There was a good flow to the book and I was constantly wanting to know what would happen next. Unfortunately I felt that the ending was a bit anticlimactic. I also felt it was unsatisfying and just left off. It just stopped. I wanted to know more about what happened to Gestalt. Did he go back to his own world? Does he ever see his mom again? Does he just continue to share his consciousness with the demon king? I hope that there is another book that gives me some answers because I'd love to read it. I also hope that it starts exactly where this one left off. Other than that it was really good. Because of the ending I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.
This audiobook was given to me in exchange for an honest review. It is my own unbiased opinion.
“...the cold night wind chilled his silver armor, making it feel as though the plates were made from ice blocks.”
First , I love to read stories where the writer give you descriptions of events/feelings that you yourself have experienced. No, no I have never been on a battle field wearing armor, but I know what cold metal feels like, I know what an ice block feels like. This sentence brings it all together and conjures up images that are familiar to the reader.
Martell does a wonderful job of this throughout the whole book.
I was immediately engrossed in the fantasy that Pandemonia Chronicles: DAWN offered me. You do have to feel somewhat sorry for Gestalt Balmont in the beginning and what the villagers mistake him for, but you soon realize that this is all necessary in order for him to meet the cutest character ever: Jofur.(Think of him as your naughty Moogle in Final Fantasy, but he is a talking bear) Young , or young at heart Fans of fantasy anime/manga such as Record of Lodoss War by Ryo Mizuno will appreciate this book written for a younger audience. Or if you are more familiar with the 1980’s cartoon show called Dungeons and Dragons put out by TSR based on the RPG you will definitely enjoy Dawn.
