After Bath or (if you prefer) The Remarkable Case of the Flying Hat

Rate this book
The story relates to the search by William and Garland for the lost magic of Minchester. In the sinister lodge of Cloud Castle there are strange happenings- stranger still in the Gremlin Academy. Sea battles, a parachute raid, an expedition across the mountains of The in a tank which Dr. Hemlock Jomes, celebrated detective, converted into a luxury caravan- these are mere incidents in a wild epic.

And the characters! There's Her Royal Highness Mrs. Cloke, who had a passion for dressmaking and was supremely magic. There's the golden-hearted Agony, evacuee parlourmaid. There's the noble MacAlpin, the Kolar bear with a taste for literature. And hosts more - the villainous Mr. Urder, Mayor of Thereville; that dark and dangerous figure, the unprincipled Principal of the Gremlin Academy; the mysterious Messrs. Daisy... You'll see!

This is a quirky kids' adventure story from the 40s. Read it if you like pirates, magic, gremlins, witches, 7 league boots or intelligent kolar bears...

I first read this book at age 10, I enjoyed it at the time and occasionally re-read it as an adult. It is full of interesting characters, adventure, pirates, gremlins, sinister and corrupt local government, and good eventually triumphing over evil. Highly reccommended.
