Such a well written book with a strong yet vulnerable heroine, Alaina, who stuck to her convictions whilst remaining faithful to the man, she was forced to marry after they were caught in a rather compromising situation, sans clothing. However, I was forced to give it 3 stars because Ian was such an ass. Firstly, the whole situation arose because he couldn't keep his pants on around an attractive widow, despite intending to marry the girl he 'loved', Risa. Secondly, even after he married, he remained attracted to Risa and even acted on this attraction after his wife just gave birh to their child. There was never guilt nor remorse on his part. Risa herself is no innocent bystander despite developing a close friendship with Alaina. Completely turned me off reading her story in the next book.

I read this so many years ago that I can't remember enough to write a review, except that the history that the author inserts into the novels of this series, plus the fascinating characters make it an amazing series.

Intriguing Tale of a Difficult Marriage During the Civil War

This is the third in Graham's 19th century Old Florida's McKenzies series--passionate romances that tell the stories of the men and women who shaped a great state. The first began in 1835 but with this third, the Civil War begins. Graham takes care to give us the history of the times (it's her home state after all!) as she weaves wonderful tales of love in the Eden that was the Florida Territory.

Set in 1860 at the outset of the Civil War (though the prologue is 2 years later), it tells the story of Ian McKenzie, the son of Jarrett and Tara (from the first book, RUNAWAY).

The prologue begins with the Union Army Major they called the Panther, hunting silent and deadly along the southern Florida coast for the Moccasin, the Rebel spy who has taken such a great toll on the Union. Until he captured the Moccasin, Ian McKenzie didn't know (though he suspected) the spy was also his wife, Alaina...the wife he didn't want but was forced to marry for honor when he inadvertently joined her in a pool where she was swimming nude.

Ian McKenzie, though handsome and charming and an "honorable" man, treats Alaina roughly at times. For example, on his wedding night, then after, not bothering to woo the bride he didn't want, and then sharing his most intimate thoughts with Risa, the woman he had intended to marry. In truth, he admits he loves them both, which makes this a most unusual romance. Risa would have been happy to sleep with Ian notwithstanding her supposed friendship with Alaina (who could like Risa after that?). One had to feel sorry for Alaina. To be sure, early on she was a bit of a brat and didn't try to see Ian's point of view as a man loyal to the Union, but then she was raised a Southerner--as was most of Ian's family--and it was Federal troops that had accidentally killed her father. She was not the kind of wife who would forgo her convictions just to follow her husband. Ian never seemed to understand that about her. So Ian and Alaina were ever at odds.

Still, for all that, this is a well-told story and it’s a part of a great series (see list). Graham knows how to write and weaves intriguing, well-researched tales. Read the series in order.

Ok, so this is one review for the whole saga.

The saga begins during the second Seminole war and ends at the end of the secession war. The first two books are about Jarrett (white american) and James his half brother who is half white (same father)/half Seminole. The four following books are focused on their children.

The McKenzies are a close knit family. Then secession war happens and though they are all staunchly against slavery they find themselves politically divided.

Heather Graham has a real talent to weave real History through her romances and each time she gave us both side of the story.

One of my favorite historical saga ever.

At once a romance novel and a history book, equally wonderful. One of my favorite books of all-time, regardless of genre. Without a doubt, Graham's best work. I think it would make for an amazing mini-series!

Heather's Civil War series is one of her best. Lots of details about the Civil War and it's the story of a family divided during the war by beliefs, but not by love. They were all page-turners for me.

Good start, engaging but frustrating read. I read books in this series with a gap because the characters are similar in how they behave. Hot headed male and an unreasonable female. HG stories are too well written to skip.

This review is for the entire series.

Heather Graham is an incredible storyteller and her Florida Civil War series of six books is riveting, full of passion and rich historical details.

The first two books, Runaway and Captive, take place during the Seminole Wars, mid 1830s and the heroes are two brothers, Jarrett and James McKenzie who has a Seminole mother. Both wealthy landowners. Jarrett wins Tara, the heroine, in a poker game in New Orleans.

The rest of the series is about four of their adult children and is set during the Civil War. All the romances mirror the intensity and battles of these wars… they are enemies to lovers… especially during the Civil War books when the McKenzies are divided in loyalty … Union or the South.

This series has much more historical detail compared to Graham’s earlier series about the Camerons… Florida is her home state and was the breadbasket of the Confederacy. At times the actual romances are almost a backstory .., in one book they hero and heroine only meet sporadically until the end, as the battles in the North raged around them. There’s plenty of blood and gore, tragedy, high stakes adventures, all surrounding sex scenes full of slightly purple prose. The state of Florida plays a starring role along with the splendid McKenzie clan who all appear in the final book as the author ties all the loose ends together.

Recommend if you’re interested in reading HRs heavy on history and lighter on the number of pages for romance. Yes, I loved the series!

No one writes a love scene like Heather Graham, and few authors research as thoroughly as Heather Graham.

Rebel is a paragon of sensuality and *historical* fiction writing and the hero, Ian Mackenzie is a top-ten romance hero for me. I love him at times, I hate him at times. He is a career military officer and Unionist at the brink of the Civil War, but like his father before him, he is a Floridian and loves the pines, the swamp, the tide - uniquely Southern, distinctly Floridian things. So when he encounters Florida’s very own daughter Alaina McMann fencing on his father’s lawn (and later in a compromising position), he does not immediately realize he has quite met his match.

It is because Ian and Alaina are so similar in disposition, yet so staunchly on opposite sides that Rebel emits such spit and ember. It’s a long novel, but as the pages become more lopsided you find yourself wanting their story to go on.

I read the “One Wore...” series first (the Camerons) and as I sit with both series, the Florida Series grows on me more and more. I would say Ian and Daniel are similar heroes in their interactions as lovers and mates, although Ian is certainly more like Jesse Cameron than Daniel Cameron in terms of ideology. If you are a Heather Graham fan I would certainly recommend reading Rebel.

This review really covers the series. I have enjoyed the series a lot. My favorite thing is that it is centered around Florida during the Civil War for this book, and the Seminole wars of earlier 1800s. I am enjoying the historical value of these series. It really paints a picture as to what it was like during this trying time. I am a Floridian and I have loved picturing my home state and all the places they visit. I love hearing the names and actions of the people who gave some many cities and counties their names. Another thing that I'm loving is how she is able to incorporate her fictional characters into the history of Florida. If I had a gripe at all it would be how women were treated back then, but that has nothing to do with the books!

Good not great

To much history and to much swearing.
The actual story idea was good and could have been great, depends on the reader. I wanted to read a story, not a history book. Back ground history would have been fine.

Fantastic Story

This is the third book in the series and just as good as the other two. Gives you a lot of insight into the history of Florida. Also depicts how at the outbreak of the Civil War family and friends fought against each other.

This is book 3 of 6 of the Florida Civil War series. Alaina McMann has grown up being friends and neighbors with the McKenzie kids. She used to follow Ian around as a little girl, fascinated with him. She grew up in the wilds of Florida, raised by her father Teddy. Everyone disapproving that a girl shouldn't be allowed to run wild.

Years later, Ian is in the Union army, engaged to a Union General's daughter, Risa, whom he loves very much. He intends on asking for her hand soon, when a trip home to Florida, interfers with his plans. It's at his father, Jarrett's, birthday, that he sees Alaina for the first time in many years and through no fault of their own, they are caught in a position that only leaves them one solution...marry, or their reputations will be ruined.

Ian McKenzie is still in love with Risa, but he can't bear to see Alaina ruined, both for her sake and her kind father, Teddy's. So Ian and Alaina marry, but the coming war has already given them enough reasons to hate each other. Alaina remains a Southerner through and through and Ian decides to stay with the Union army. Believing him a traitor, Alaina becomes a spy for the South know as the Moccasin.

I liked this book, but not as well as the first two. Most of that is due to Ian's personaility being just assholish. He marries Alaina, but continues to think of Risa, even kissing her passionately soon after the birth of his son. I do like Alaina very much though and I even feel sorry for Risa. Risa is an excellent character and I can't wait to read about her in book 4.

I read this one out of order. I’m not sure if it’s because I already had an idea of the story or if it was the flow of this particular book, but it didn’t seem to move as smoothly as previous books. It took me two to three times longer to read this book than any previous book I’ve read. The story was good, the characters had vibrant personalities, but the book seemed to be a little flat. I was hoping to get caught up in the story and be anxious to know what would happen next, but never had that happen. I am going to assume it’s because I knew everything would turn out ok in the end, of course, you always know that with a romance book. I mean we might not know exactly how it will transpire, but we know there is going to be a happy ending, otherwise we wouldn’t read them.
Ian and Alaina make a great couple and the spy story was believable, but you should definitely make sure you read this book before you read the follow book Surrender.

this book continues the story of the mackenzies of florida by heather graham. this historical romance starts telling about the next generation during the civil war and what happens in florida. Ian the oldest who becomes a unionist is forces to marry Alaina a starch confederate. She ends up becoming a spy for the confederacy. This leads to some adventure and action mixed in with the romance. heather Graham sticks to her usual format leading off with a scene from the end of the book and then a flashback to tell us what has happened before then and finally returning to the scene. this format leaves you wanting to read through the book quickly so that u can find out what happened and as usual the ending does not disappoint.

I absolutely love this series. The history of Florida is so present in these books. The author writes with such passion about the state and the Indian relations. The love story is fantastic as well. I didn't like the heroine in this book as much as the previous ones. She wasn't as likeable but still it was a great read. I can't wait to read the remaining ones.

I am enjoying this series although I am a little irritated that the men always seem to assume that the female lead is experience and is therefore ripe pickings. Lucky for them they fall in love. Of course it is a sign of the time. Love conquers all.
