The Attack is a graphic adaptation of a 2005 novel first published in French by Yasmina Khadra, recently translated into English and published in late 2016. I never read Khadra’s novel, an Arab and a naturalized Israeli citizen. The suicide bomber, as it turns out, was his wife, Sihem, whom he believed was on an overnight trip to a relative’s house. He initially doesn’t believe it, but as he tries to (dangerously) unravel what has happened, he meets the people who recruited her.

In the process, Jaafari gets a broader view of the political scene than he had been previously aware of, and so do we as readers. And encounters a lot of hate and hurt emanating from every possible angle. I find it intensely sad, tragic, brutally complicated on every level in the way of the best artistic enterprises, taking no real sides with anyone or any group, seeing no obvious solution to anything. Jaafari’s world collapses even as he undergoes a kind of political education.

Since I never read the original novel, I can only imagine that the array of characters might have been a little less confusing with more information. I thought the artwork by Chapron was well done. I thought it was intense and could possibly be very provocative, but I felt it was a sad, humane work of art about one anguished man and not a political tract.

A graphic novel adaptation of a 2005 novel, where a Palestinian doctor in Israel is working to save the lives of a suicide bomber's attack, only to discover that his wife was the bomber. After a thorough investigation, he is cleared, only to be attending attacked by neighbors and shunned by friends and colleagues. He decides to seek answers about his wife's secret life, meeting with fellow Muslims, and drawing unwanted attention. Harsh, but probably realistic portrayal of religious and political problems in the Middle East. Nice artwork. Very violent.

I don't really know how to review The Attack. It's a book that left me reeling, much like most of what Joe Sacco writes/draws. The story was a painful fictionalised glimpse of the Israeli-Palestinian war. It starts with an Arab doctor who has become a naturalised Israeli citizen. His life is stable and enjoyable until one day his wife kills herself in a suicide bombing. He had no idea that she held these types of political views. This side of her was a mystery to him, so he goes looking for answers.

The book follows the husband as attempts to understand why his wife was driven to do what she did. He's angry, but so are the people that he meets with. The unfairness of the conflict is on grand display, though the book never tries to tell you who is right and wrong. However, you can't come away from this narrative without feeling as if the devastation of war is disgusting and must end. It's an ugly book, but a powerful one.

I found this graphic novel on sale and thought, "Yeah sure!" I enjoy picking up a mixed bag of stuff I wouldn't normally read in this way :)

Glad I read the graphic novel version as many people didn't seem to connect to the prose of the thing. But the story is quite brilliant, I thought!

And the ending! Wow. Thought it was brilliant. And a decent introduction to the Israel/Palestine conflict to me, since I don't know much about it.

Disturbing, eye-opening, and a book that left me with an uneasy feeling. For my sheltered American senses, this was a glimpse into the brutal realities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the lens of a grief-stricken and divided husband.

Empfehlenswert.

I read this because I was interested to see what a graphic novel is like. I'm a little behind the curve, I guess! Years ago, I did read the "Maus" books which had excellent illustrations and a solid story line. I still remember a lot of them.

As I understand it, The Attack, unlike Maus, is not an original story. Rather it is adapted from a novel by Yasmina Khadra. I haven't read the novel, but the adaptation seems a little rushed to me, especially towards the end where I lost track of some of the names of people or, rather, new characters were introduced as if I should have known them. The graphic novel was for me a kind of blur -- not so much that I didn't follow the story as that the story seemed so smoothed out, as it were.

In general, the story is an important one. A person of Palestinian upbringing becomes -- somehow as there's no back story -- a surgeon in Israel and a naturalized Israeli. He lives a western lifestyle. It is not spoiler to say that his equally western wife allies with one of the freedom movements and dies as a suicide bomber. This event is the motive for the book. The surgeon, who is in total PTSD (no surprise), is mistreated by Israeli authorities and Jewish citizens of Israel (no surprise). The surprise comes when he tries, in a crazy, unhinged way (excusable), to trace his wife's movements before her death. This takes him to the Occupied Territories (OT) which is his childhood home. The different points of view he meets there - including admiration for his wife and contempt for him as well as love by family - are unsettling to say the least.

My unhappiness at this point is that the book does not go on to construct how his PTSD develops or changes him over time or how he deals with straddling the border between Israel and the OT. It also dealt with the suffering in the OT, but the origins of Israeli anger and grief are not explored. this might have added some depth to his plight. So, the book was a good goad for me to question and try to know the experiences in the OT. But, at bottom, it was the "action" that carried me forward -- the suspense, the outrage, the violence.

I'm not sure what the original novel is like, but I worry about the possible glossing of complexity in the graphic novel. In these times, when I'm afraid that concentrated reading is going out of style, I am concerned about this a lot.

Algerian author Khadra (a pseudonym) started his career by writing crime novels, so it shouldn't be surprising that he uses some of the similar procedural framework for this excellent attempt to explain why a seemingly fully integrated upper middle-class Arab woman becomes a suicide bomber in Israel. The protagonist, Dr. Jaafari, is a respected Israeli Arab doctor living in a nice Tel Aviv house, socializing with plenty of Jewish friends. The book opens with his hospital receiving a score of victims from a suicide bomb attack, one that apparently his wife delivered.

The plot hook of a spouse with a secret life is a classic one, and here it's well-used as the hook for the doctor to try and understand what happened to the woman he loved and why she would do this. This takes him down the mean streets of Bethlehem, Jenin, and elsewhere, trying to meet with shadowy mullahs, and various factions of Islamist groups. As with the classic detective plot, no one wants him sticking his nose in, stirring up trouble, but he persists until he can learn the full truth of his wife's secret life.

As far as I can recall (I read the original novel more than ten years ago), this adaptation is fairly faithful. The one aspect that can get a little confusing is keeping track of the the profusion of various family members of different generations that the doctor encounters in his journey. The compression of the story in this format makes that a bit tough. I didn't love the art -- it's too loose and simple for my taste. Overall, worth checking out if you're looking for a graphic novel with a nuanced and provocative story, alas, one that's just as relevant as when it was written. As a final note, I should add that the film adaptation of the novel is very good.

Why?

When reading any book (especially a graphic novel) we all ask ourselves why is this story worth telling? Along with why, we have what is this story trying to telling us?
When I can't answer the Why? and the What? that's when I give a one star rating.
...
Knowing the book's difficult subject, I tried going in with an open mind, and I promised myself I would wait to judge until the last page. And what a last page it was.

Art: It was very difficult to see who was talking in every frame. Every speech bubble pointed generally towards the frame's subjects, and it wasn't easy to see who said what on any page.
It was obvious that the adaptation from book to graphic novel was a hard one. There were a million relatives and characters named in frame, and off page, and impossible to keep track of.

Message: The best I can work out, this is a loose validation of Pro-Palestinian terrorism?

If I could give this no stars, I would.

I won a copy of this book from Goodreads Giveaways.

The core of the story is set against the backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We follow the main character Amin Jaafari, an Arab and a naturalized Israeli citizen, living and working as a surgeon in Tel Aviv, as he tries to make sense of the tragedy of a suicide bombing.

Hovering over the story is the shadowy identity of one of the mutilated bodies found at the site of the explosion: the suicide bomber’s. To the fundamentalists she is a hero, a martyr, a person who’s made the ultimate sacrifice to defend the cause of a suffering people dispossessed of their homeland. In the eyes of her victims, however, she’s an extremist, a fanatic, a murderer of innocent children.

A very solid read for me. The book avoids giving easy resolutions to the questions it raises; and the illustrations are fittingly grim and gritty.

I picked up this graphic novel on a whim from the library. I know very little about the history of the Middle East and I thought that this graphic novel version of the fictional novel The Attack by Yasmina Khadra would be a great way to introduce myself to the topic.

The artwork was completely in harmony with the text, the colours and style really evoked a sense of place and a fast pace. The story itself was emotional and mysterious, though I did feel a little lost at points, almost as though there was a panel missing here and there.

This reading experience has definitely inspired me to pick up the original novel and has taught me more about the Israel/Palestine conflict. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.

Palestinský chirurg Amin Džaafari zažívá den jako z noční můry. V centru Tel Avivu došlo k sebevražednému útoku a on se snaží zachránit co největší počet zraněných.

Visceral and haunting graphic novel set amongst attacks in Israel and Palestine. An Arabic doctor living in Israel witnesses the aftermath of a suicide bombing, only to find himself a victim of reprisals. In his search for answers (less airy fairy than it sounds as I am hiding a spoiler that is blown by the blurb - don't read it first) he is drawn to an engagement with those who support the perpetrator, eventually seeing the full panorama of the conflict.

Drawn in shaky artwork, the shimmering frames create an edgy feel to the whole experience and the whole thing broods with an air of permanent tension right to the final frame.

With the Israeli-Palestinian at the core of its narrative The Attack immediately offers a lot to digest. This is not a story of taking sides or one that seeks to claim a victor, but rather a showcase to the sheer chaos this conflict has erupted and how impossible it is to fully grasp. It showcases the dangerous of separating ourselves from the ones we love, and how we can become victims of our own ignorance. There is so much emotion in this story as we watch this man go through absolute yell to find answers.

The Attack Graphic Novel
Loïc Dauvillier, Glen Chapron, Yasmina Khadra

This graphic book is an adaptation of a novel by Yasmina Khadra, which presents a view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The authors use a Palestinian doctor, working in Israel, as a point of focus, and attempt to tell both sides of this conflict. This generally works, although the doctor character seems overdone and less credible.

I read the novel, The Attack, about ten years ago. In general, I prefer novels to graphic novels as I find they have more detail. This graphic novel carries with it all the important parts that I appreciated in the novel: both books show the many sides of the conflict and help you to understand where each side is coming from.
