My mum bought this book at Musee d'Orsay as a guide to the paintings being exhibited there. The book, however, transcends being just a mere guide of the paintings. Alongside the artworks are background information that gives you a glimpse of the lives of the artists that immortalized them and the historic situation that eventually shaped their styles. There are also comparison pages, wherein paintings with the same theme but different styles are compared, making for a very interesting and educational read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a lot more about many of the paintings and artists featured in the Orsay Museum. I liked the organization of the book (both chronologically and by subjects). Some of the "subject" oriented pages, featuring the same subject (e.g., snow, a mountain, etc.) were particularly interesting in that they allow you to compare how two or more artists treated the same subject.
I've recently been to the Orsay and it was wonderful to refresh my mind and learn a bit more about some of the wonderful paintings I saw. i know this is a book I will hold onto, and will definitely read again immediately before my next trip to Paris.
This book is good if you've been to D'Orsay, if you intend to visit D'Orsay, or if you intend to visit D'Orsay again and again - which might be inevitable once you finish this delightful edition.
Spent part of the weekend reading this book and feeling like I was walking through the rooms of the museum. It brought up good memories of paintings that stood out, made me curious about paintings that I may not have fully appreciated while there. When I visit the museum again (not if, even if I live in another continent), then I'll be more knowledgeable and more eager to notice in real life the details I found in those pages. It's a very educational edition, in that groups paintings for a fuller understanding: the title of the book is thus very accurate.
The Orsay Museum is one of the most amazing museums in the world. 100% recommended. It’s a breathtaking experience.
This specific book is fairly complete. Beautiful presentation. Just that some of the most important Monet paintings should be taller in the book. They are worthy of whole pages in it.
An interesting look at the paintings within the Orsay Museum's collection including comparisons of how different impressionists approached the same subject, and some discussion of the context of different pieces. This book is a refreshing change from those that merely describe what the painting look like and has many large pictures.
