The pulsing beat of the native Rom dance, causes Scott to leave the safety of his friends and venture alone into the dangerous forest of Ambrym Island. Though, the forest holds many frightening secrets, Scott escapes and finds safety in the arms of a seductive islander—Jaunay. Their romance flourishes under the warmth of the island’s sun, and finds release in its sultry fire-lit nights.
Scott, drunk on local wine and the drama of a fireside dance, runs off into the jungle leaving his friends behind while on vacation. He soon becomes lost and frightened, but is rescued by Jaunay, a local islander and is instantly smitten, as is Juanay it seems. They spend the night together on the beach and then the next day exploring the island.
The parts of this story I enjoyed were the descriptions of the island. I want to be there, really. The beach, the jungle, the waterfalls and underwater caves, the environment was described in great detail. However the romance didn’t work for me. Would Scott’s friends not be freaking out of their friend ran into the jungle at night and didn’t come back for 24+ hours? He could be dead. I think the author intended there to be a bit of a mystical feel to the story, as Scott had prayed to the god during the dancing to bring him a lover, and boom, there was Juanay. However it just didn’t come across in that fantasy way for me.
I found myself distracted by things such as lube-less sex, especially sex on a beach in the surf with sand everywhere. They spent the day with no visible food or drink beyond coconuts, and within 24 hours there are declarations of love. The writing style seemed a bit stilted to me at times, especially the dialogue which may have been due to a lot of dialogue tags. What little dialogue there is, didn’t seem to flow for me, but that could be a stylistic preference and others won’t find it distracting.
This is free at All Romance e-Books, so if you are looking for an unusual vivid setting it’s a good choice, however I found the romance to be less than engaging.
I honestly don't know what to think about this book. The island was wonderfully described, but! Sex without lube? No food the whole day long? I think it would've been better if it ended just two pages in, with Scott meeting Jaunay just after asking the island king for a man, that would've been magical. The rest though... I was just too boggled by the logistics of what was happening. I did love the "I'm coconuts over you!" declaration, but the rest felt... weird.
Badly written sex scenes mixed with a...I can't even call it a plot. Dialogues, characters and storyline were one-dimensional, erratic and boring. I have read better PWP stories. Good thing that it's free because I've got better things to spend my money on.
