For years, the Clan has lived through that curse, trying and failing to break free of the shackles that hold them to it. Now, an obscure text gives five cousins hope…
His duty was all that mattered.
Callum Lennon has one goal in protect his cousins. His failure in the past to do just that is what drives every action. When they discover a chance for redemption, Callum is willing to try. But trusting an outsider isn’t acceptable.
A woman in need of a new beginning.
An expert in archeology, Phoebe has always felt dwarfed by her parents’ shadow. In college by thirteen, she’s never measured up to her parents’ high standards. When the Lennons contact her, she decides to take a chance…and finds herself intrigued by the most insufferable man.
A passion impossible to ignore.
One argument leads to a kiss and to an unbearable desire they cannot seem to fight. When an old enemy threatens their fragile new love, Callum will have to choose between believing his mind or trusting his heart.
The love stories in the Cursed Clan begin and end with each book. The greater quest takes place over all 5 books.
I started this expecting an erotica novella, so I was completely unprepared for a rather involved paranormal romance. A good read, quite enjoyable. I liked the characters and relationships. I'd have liked to know more about the curse. Hopefully it will be explored more in the following books.
EDIT: Because I wrote the above while half asleep, I didn't consider adding some information on the heat level of this book. I'd rate the smut temp at medium-low. There was a lot of tension between Phoebe and Callum and two or three sex scenes that weren't graphic (at least not compared to what I usually read and to the other Schroeder book I read). In fact, Callum imagining what he wanted to do to/with Phoebe was more graphic than the act itself. This definitely is a PNR, not an erotica.
I don’t know why I didn’t pull this one up off my TBR before now, but I am some happy I finally did! It has so much going on for it - an ancient curse, a tortured hero, a family feud, a determined heroine, forbidden attraction, and enough mystery and heat to keep you wondering what will happen next. Loved every second of it <3
Callum, by Melissa Schroeder is a good old fashioned mystery, nee love story shrouded in Celtic lore and witchcraft. The Clan McLennon has a cursed placed upon the surviving members of the family. The curse of Immortality. Through the years and to ward off those that would snoop too closely at the family lineage, the family has shortened their clan name from McLennon to just Lennon. Brothers, Callum and Angus and cousins Anice, Fletcher and Logan have been alive for centuries trying to unravel the curse placed upon their family. Callum Lennon has kept his family together no matter what obstacles have come their way. The curse of immortality has a high price and the Clan realizes that fact. Enter Dr. Phoebe Chilson, a noted and highly sought after archeologist. The Lennon Clan has contacted Dr. Chilson in hopes that she can decipher the diary of the witch who originally cursed the clan in 1730. Despite Callum’s sour demeanor and a strict stick to business code of ethics he is instantly drawn to Phoebe. Phoebe who has always been the good girl seeking her parents approval and to move out of their famous shadow wants to make a name for herself in the world of archeology standing on her own two feet. Schroeder has woven a story filled with mystery and of course some pretty hot lovemaking sessions. Phoebes quest to figure out the diary while fighting off her growing attraction to Callum. Callum does his best to fight his impulse and attraction to Phoebe, but to no avail. Lust wins. Callum gets what he wants but Phoebe is not the type of woman he can just bed and leave. However, if Phoebe can figure out the diary what will happen to the clan? I do believe this is a new series for Schroeder and I can’t wait for the rest of the stories to be told.
Interesting enough start for me to keep reading. It was okay for a first book to a series. Just wish Callum's and Phoebe's romance was bit more scorching than it was. It had sweet moments and semi-hot ones as well. Just felt it could have been much more.
What intrigued me more is the family secret and getting more details. I thought since the romance was a bit lacking, I would have gotten more details on the world building. But maybe the things I longed for here, will come out more as the story progresses with the other books.. So I will be reading the first 3 books in this series anyway, to see where it takes me.
Ok, I admit, while being a Melissa Shroeder fan, I wanted this book for the yummy, cover, hotness. I mean, it's Melissa, so I knew it would be good. I haven't been disappointed yet.
Here is the blurb:
Will desire be the answer or the ruin of an entire clan? The Cursed Clan, Book 1
As Laird, Callum Lennon feels he has always failed to protect his cousins. Callum’s impulsiveness caused the death of his father and the experience has scarred not only his body, but his soul. From that point on, he made sure to always go with the more logical choice in every matter. When his younger cousin Angus finds clues that might help break the curse, Callum begrudgingly hires Phoebe Chilton to investigate. Callum doesn’t like bringing outsiders into their family affairs. Their life would become fodder for the tabloids if anyone were to find out about the curse. It doesn’t help that the instant he meets Dr. Chilton he’s attracted. But, he doesn’t really have a choice because she might be their last hope.
An expert in archeology, Phoebe has always been dwarfed by her parents’ shadow. Their high standards had her in college by thirteen and earning a second PhD by twenty-two. But her career and her broken marriage have left her needing something more than just diplomas and degrees. She wants to prove that her interest in legends, especially Celtic legends, is as important as her parents’ work. When the Lennon family contacts her, she sees the opportunity to win a massive research grant. With a long-time rival breathing down her back, she jumps at the Lennons’ offer her, hoping it will ensure her the grant. But uncovering the Lennon family secrets, and her attraction to Callum, could prove more than she can handle.
Forces outside the family are determined to ensure that they fail. When an old enemy threatens both the well being of the clan and the fragile new love, Callum will have to choose between believing his mind or his heart.
I was hooked from page one. The way the characters are revealed, and the story unfolds had me completely drawn in! I made the mistake of starting this book at work. I was deep into it, and when I came up for air I had a hard time getting my mind out of Scotland and back into the cafe. So don't read at work! You will be sucked into the awesomeness that is Clan McLennan. You also get just enough details to have you wanting to read the other four cousins' stories.
This story is the first in a new paranormal series from one of my favorite authors, Melissa Schroeder. Melissa has done it again. She's created a paranormal story that is set in current day but has that traditional old world charm. This is the first book of the Cursed Clan series and I cannot wait to read the entire series!
Phoebe Chilton is the offspring to world renowned archeologists and is herself a child progeny and genius. Phoebe has been living her short life under the thumb of parents who have controlled her life up until now...Phoebe is following a dream, and in so it brings her to do some research in her favorite subject Celtic lore and legends.
Laird Callum Lennon is the head of his clan and is fiercely protective of his family and history. The Lennon clan has obtained a lost journal and they need an expert to help them unravel the secrets and a possible end to the curse that plagues the family.
Contacting Dr. Chilton, the Lennon family hopes that she will be able to help their cause. Phoebe is hoping she can obtain a grant to further her Celtic research. When Dr. Phoebe Chilton and Laird Callum meet, there is a sizzling connection between them, as they fight to ignore the attraction, Phoebe tries to unlock the confusing information in the journal. As Phoebe gets closer to unraveling the mystery of the journal, it seems that ancient rivalries are at work to stop the Lennon family from finally getting the answers they need. It also is staining the delicate trust and budding relationship between Phoebe and Laird Callum.
This book is a delight to read. Scottish Laird, smart feisty Doctor, a quest to find the end of a centuries old curse. What's not to love!?
Good start to a series. It took a while to get to what the actual curse was, and I kept thinking maybe there was more to the curse. Frankly, I don't see what is so awful about it. Yes, it would make lifelong relationships difficult, but in this day and age, lifelong relationships are often not held up anyway. It's hard to imagine an enemy, intent on revenge, selling her soul for this kind of curse. Many, I would think, would see it as a gift. Still, while the curse doesn't seem strong itself, the story line was good.
The sexual tension in the beginning of the book was a bit too exaggerated and could have used some subtlety, but the relationship between the two main characters was good and evolved well. I was initially a bit ambivalent towards Phoebe, but she grew on me and I ended up liking her character quite well. Callum, what's not to like, right? He may wear the hair shirt a bit much but he makes a great strong male character.
All in all, despite the slight weakness in the desperation of the curse, this was a good, entertaining read, and a promising beginning to a series.
Callum Lennon who has very strong loyalty to his family and Dr, Phoebe Chilton who's parents have no such feelings for their only child. Well Callum is so much more then the love story I excepted. It is a story with suspense that has you talking to the people in the book. Love is blossoming between the two of them which is so very hard for them to accept, they distrust everyone. Callum & Phoebe have every right to mistrust people. Callum is a story with suspense that has you talking to the people in the book.Callum is trying to break the curse on his family, he needs Phoebe to break the code of the diary. Callum and his cousins are hoping she can. This is an exciting read!
Melissa Schroeder’s new series The Cursed Clan is a departure from her normal erotic tales. The first book, Callum, introduces the Lennon family. Their laird Callum has had years of responsibility weighing him down. Enter Phoebe Chilton, a genius archeologist who’s never been able to live the life she wants. These two are perfect for each other but can’t see it without the help of his interfering family. Ms. Schroeder writes a brilliant sensual tale with an interesting paranormal twist. I can’t wait to read the next installments, if they are half as good as this story then I’ll be hooked from the first word.
Wanting to prove her worth to a unattentive family, Phoebe snaps at the offer to look over a mysterious Celtic artifact for the elusive millionaire, Callum. Securing a grant on the artifact without Callum knowing might be a bit difficult since he is so protective of the piece and Phoebe hasn’t even seen it yet. His list of demands are a mile long but Phoebe didn’t get to this point in her career by being a push over. Her high IQ will solve the riddle of whatever it is Callum asks of her anf once she secures the grant she can finally do what she has longed to do forever, tell her parents she doesn’t need their approval anymore. What she doesn’t expect is the instant attraction that flares between her and the emotionally defunct Callum.
All Callum wants is for the curse on his family to finally be at a end. They deserve happiness, not to pay for something out of their control centuries ago. Phoebe holds the answers to his quest, he is sure of it. He can’t afford to be distracted by her beauty and his need to possess her. How can he keep her far enough away in order to get the answers for which he seeks and manage to keep his emotions in check and his hands off her delectable body? In the end, nothing can get in his way, especially not the brilliant archaeologist that holds the key to his undoing.
Welcome to an entirely new world that the fabulous Melissa Schroeder has thought up for us! I will admit, when I heard Callum was a departure from what I usually enjoy from Melissa (erotic romance) I was intrigued and a bit nervous. So often I find that when I associate one thing with a particular author that when they try for something a bit different I feel let down. This was NOT the case for Callum. Melissa has given us readers a wonderful love story with enough suspense to keep this girl coming back for more!
Callum is a centuries old Scottish Laird who, along with his family, has been cursed to live as a immortal though never truly being happy. At first glance I thought, um being a immortal would totally kick ass. Upon closer inspection I saw his pain at losing friends, lovers and really not having anyone except the few cousins that were cursed along with him for something that he himself, really didn’t have any control over. Callum is hard and closed off and only allows himself to engage in actions and not ever in feelings. He is a ruthless businessman and having acquired mass amounts of riches that allows him to look for a cure to their curse under the radar. He is extremely confused when he takes one look at a rain drenched, bedraggled, Phoebe and immediately feels a kick start from someone deep inside. He simply can’t compute that level of emotional attachment. Not to mention how dangerous he sees it that he wants something more then a cure to his families curse. He is the type of person that carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. Anything less then that would seem a betrayal to him.
I enjoyed Phoebe’s conflicting emotions throughout most of the book. She thinks she is in the running for a grant in archaeology and so she gives vital information to the man supporting this grant only to find out that he is most likely behind the small attacks taking place on Callum and his family. Phoebe was extremely assertive though at times that assertiveness just masked the need to feel loved. She had a childhood with parents that cared more for her work then for her and so she constantly was looking for approval from them. Getting a grant in something they found trivial, like Celtic legends, seemed like a good way to prove to them that she was just as good at what she does then they are. I thought her loyalty, though called into question a few times, was pretty steadfast and even when she wasn’t sure about her grantor, she didn’t divulge all of Callum’s information.
I too have a interest in Celtic legends and so getting to read about something like that along with a love story really peaked my interest a bit. Phoebe and Callum together was a bit of a odd match at first. They butted heads worse then an old married couple. That friction ignites into a full blown, red hot romance that was wow! This may not be an erotic romance but you can feel the sizzle between the characters like they were in the same room!
Along with Callum and Phoebe we get to meet the supporting cast of cousins who will, I’m sure, get their own stories as the case of their families curse unravels. Each brought something a big different to the table and I will be looking forward to seeing how the story arc evolves to fit each new character in.
The ending was well played if not a bit shorter then I would have liked. As wrote though I felt a completion in the story that seems to be missing for me lately with what I’ve been reading. I’m not sure how the rest will be played out after the ending of this one and so that questions alone would have me picking up the next book when it’s available.
Callum is a great beginning to a promising new series and I will be looking forward to the next one!
Okay first... Let me say that I am a huge fan of Ms. Melissa's work! Like a HUGE fan... She has never disappointed me... Her stories are riveting, enticing, alluring, lustful, hot and of course just all sorts of yummies. She weaves her stories in such a way that you will devour the story and not know what time it is... Her stories are so enthralling that you will want more, need more... crave more! And this one is no exception!
Now secondly, I would like to thank all the people that Ms. Melissa thanked in her dedication because without them... I would have never been able to read this awesome story. Thank you guys for pushing Melissa to write this story... And Brandy for pushing her to publish it!
This story is just that awesome... Yes, ladies and gentlemen... This is a great... okay... scratch that.. Awesome way to introduce a new storyline... This is a story about two families that have been at odds with each other for centuries; with no end in sight. Both families are cursed... but can the curse be broken... Enter in the picture one woman with one mission... To learn!
Phoebe is one woman who is no nonsense. She knows the rules of life; so she plays the game very well. Never letting her heart get involved with anything other than artifacts. She lives, eats and breaths dig sites. She loves what she does with a passion... But her secret passion is with Celtic legends and when she is given the chance at getting an up-close look into the world of the Celtic legend she has studied all her life... how can she say no! But at what price will it cost her to work with Callum and his family....?
Callum and his family are different from the normal family... How you might ask... Well, they have been around for centuries... No, I don't mean as in the family line has been around for that long... or can be traced back that far... No... They actually have been physically around for that long. They are cursed due to something that happened way back when.. Of course I cannot tell you what happened... I have to get you to read the story somehow right?!?! Well, anyway.. back to my review...
Callum is not very trusting of the world... So, when he finds out that in order to even attempt to break this blasted ass curse, they have to bring in an outsider - well, let's just say he is not pleased... Then when he finds out she is from England... Well, let's just say he has a few choice words to say about that...
But now... when this story kicked off, Melissa had me intrigued from the very first page... She wrapped me around this family and had me wanting to know what the hell was going to happen... Melissa did an awesome job at giving me what I needed in this book but giving me the surprise of knowing there is definitely more to come from this family and their adventures to solve this family curse... Now did I give away to much.. No, because believe me when I tell you Melissa will give you the ride of your life with this story when you read it! Callum and his bad ass Scottish self... And he does look rather yummy in his kilt... And believe me the sex is... Well, it is all what is it made out to be - HOT!
This couple will rock your world! There are lies, there are half truths.... There are plots of vengeance, plans of thievery... There are things in this story that will only wet your lips for what is to come in the next one.. Oh and did I mention that Callum has other family members... One female... but the other four... Well, they are men just like him... So, I am very anxious to read the next one to see what will happen to that family member because this story just gets better and better!
Melissa created strong characters. Ones that will stand up to each other... No one is over domineering... Well, wait a minute... Callum kinda is but he is all that a bag of chips - so he can be as domineering as he wants to be... Especially in bed (Oh Yum)!! She created the women just as strong as the men and just as tough to break as the men. The action in the story is enough to make it what you want to read but not to much to where that is all you are reading... The story is done in taste and style that is all Melissa!
Okay... When is book two coming out honey??? People like me want to know... You know you have teased us and taunted us enough.... Trust me when I tell you, you are going to devour this story in two if not one day... My challenge to you... See if you can put it down!
This novel is on fire! Hot Scottish man, fiery heroine, intense attraction, fabulous clan dynamic, riveting plot and perfect delivery. As you can tell, I absolutely loved this story!
Intrigued by the plot, invested in the characters and thrilled with the pace of the storytelling, I was immediately drawn in. The author doesn’t spill all the secrets at the beginning. She keeps us guessing as to what the curse is for a while. Effectively drawing out the suspense.
A little lite on the paranormal side for some of us hardcore paranormal readers, however, it’s a great read.
This first novel sets the stage for the adventures to come in the series. The premise is fantastic, and I can’t wait to see where the author will take the story. ________________________________________ So about the story… Grieved by the loss of her family, Lady Donedella McWalton swore vengeance against those responsible. She sought out a witch that could place a curse on the McLennan clan to make them suffer terribly for what they did to her family.
For almost 270 years, the McLennan clan has lived with the curse. Desperate to break it, they have been searching endlessly for a cure. Recently they have come into possession of a witch’s diary that may contain a clue. Unfortunately, it’s written in several languages and in some sort of code. The family hires an esteemed archaeologist and language specialist, Phoebe Chilton, to interpret the diary hopefully giving them a clue to breaking the curse. Problem is the clan leader, Callum, isn’t too trusting when it comes to Sassenachs (outsiders). Especially English outsiders.
Phoebe jumps at the chance to work on this project as Celtic legends is her passion. A peculiar benefactor that would provide a grant for her work approached her. She has always lived under the shadow of her famous archaeologist parents and she’s sure this is her chance to make a name for herself in a field of her choosing. She agrees to the project.
Even through her excitement, her intuition tells her that the sponsor of the grant is hiding something but she doesn't know what it is. The McLennans tell her they need the diary translated but don't tell her why or give her any additional background. They won’t even let her have the diary without the supervision of a family member. All the secrecy makes for interesting times at the McLennan castle. ________________________________________ Callum and Phoebe are like gasoline and fire. Their relationship is tumultuous and from the moment they meet, sparks fly off the pages. Callum is thrown that someone actually stands up to him. Being a clan ruler, he is certainly not used to it! He’s quick-tempered and touchy when it comes to Phoebe. She is used to being around overbearing men so she isn’t the least bit intimidated by the powerful clan chief. She can certainly hold her own. Callum’s overwhelming trust issues and Phoebe’s feelings of guilt about her secret agenda lead to overwhelming obstacles in their relationship. ________________________________________ Bottom Line This is a great Paranormal Romance novel! The dynamics of the McLennan clan are remarkable, the characters are impassioned and compelling, the plot is riveting and the delivery is faultless. The next in the series is Angus’ story (Callum’s brother) and is due out this summer. I’m really looking forward to reading more in this series!
Melissa Schroeder is an author whose work I've wanted to check out for ages and when I saw this book advertised I thought that I just had to get it. The first in her new paranormal romance series entitled The Cursed Clan sounded right up my street and I have to be honest and say the cover sure looked pretty! A paranormal series featuring highlanders but set in a contemporary setting and a mystery to solve what's not to like? Phoebe Chilton is the child of archaeologist parents and is herself deeply entranced by her chosen field. Offered the opportunity to travel to Scotland is a dream come true as researching Celtic legends stirs something deep inside Phoebes soul. Arriving to meet the members of the Lennon family who wish to engage her services means she's almost immediately butting heads with the oldest brother Callum. Phoebe is no shy miss but Callum Lennon is the most hard headed male she's ever met! He wants her to translate an ancient diary that's written in code but he clearly doesn't trust her so what's Phoebe to do? Phoebe is not going to miss out on the chance of a lifetime but Callum's family have a secret and it's possible that the diary may help unlock it. As Phoebe becomes more involved with Callum and his family it's clear that they are not the only ones interested in the diary and Callum will have to make hard choices. I realise that this author has previously written quite erotic and almost graphic books but hasten to mention that this is a more subdued and sensuous read. There's strong sexual tension that builds up between the hero and heroine which although immediate was happily played out by the author which allowed for more plot development . As for the two main characters , although their attraction is mutual and immediate the author allows the relationship to develop at a realistic pace which enables Callum to realise that it's just possible that Phoebe is more than just a passing fancy. He's clearly conflicted and unused to the idea that there could well be a woman he would wish to settle down with and struggles against the idea. I guess it's not easy being an immortal !Luckily Phoebe gives as good as she gets and although her past has not been the happiest she's prepared to fight for what she wants. Loving the strong female portrayal as clearly a strong man who heads up a business would be bored with anything less! As for the curse well unfortunately that did seem to be downplayed a little and this reader wanted to know more but I'm sure Ms Schroeder will expand upon it in future books. There is a villain but I found him a little one dimensional if honest but then again he is the bad guy! What I really felt worked was the standard of writing(Hurray!) as these Scots actually speak as if they are from Scotland! Just a gentle burr that really translated well to the page and no glaring inaccuracies that can so often ruin a good Scottish tale. As Callum spoke I could hear his brogue in my head and that's just how it should be. So Scottish curse, sexy Laird, intelligent heroine and a nicely paced romance I think this book has all that and more besides. This author has written the start of what could be a fabulous series and her talent shines through. The next book is about Angus and I for one will eagerly anticipate it. Recommended .
I have to admit, when I found out that one of my favorite erotic authors, Melissa Schroeder, was starting a new series that was NOT erotic, I was a bit skeptical. But, I shouldn’t have been worried for a minute because CALLUM, the first book in Ms. Schroeder’s Cursed Clan series, is a fantastic paranormal romance. And, although it’s a departure from her usual erotic romances, I was still thoroughly entertained and I have fallen just a little bit in love the Lennon family that she has created.
Callum Lennon is used to being in charge. As the head of the his family as well as the family business, he’s made it his mission to protect his younger cousins and make up for the mistakes he’s made in the past where his family is concerned. So, when his cousin Angus tells him that he’s hired someone to help them figure out how to break the curse that’s plagued their family for centuries, he’s concerned that opening their hidden lives up to an outsider could expose their closely guarded secrets. However, when Callum meets Dr. Phoebe Chilton, he can’t control his attraction--and that may be more dangerous than anything.
Phoebe Chilton has dealt with insufferable men like Callum Lennon her whole life. But none of them had made her body burn like him. As an expert in archeology, she wants the opportunity to explore the artifact that the Lennons want her to decipher for them, but she’s got her secrets as well. However, she soon leans there is more at stake than she ever imagined. Finding the information to break the curse may be hard, but not falling in love with Callum may be the the most difficult challenge yet.
I loved this book. The story was fantastic. It’s based about Callum and Phoebe, yet, but we get a whole back story about the five Lennon cousins and their life that sets the basis for the whole series. The premise is fantastic, and I can’t wait to see where the series is going.
As I stated before, this story is not the erotic romance we are used to from Melissa Schroeder, but it’s no less hot. The chemistry between Callum and Phoebe is sizzlin’. From the moment they meet each other in the book, their sexual tension is palpable. I knew it was inevitable for them to get together, but watching the build-up was definitely intense.
CALLUM is the first book in The Cursed Clan series, and I loved it so much, I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Callum’s cousin Angus is going to get his story next in the series, and if what we’ve seen of him in CALLUM is anything go by, we’re going to be in for a real treat.
So, I must say big a “Bravo!” so Melissa Schroeder for taking a departure from the world of erotic romance to venture into the paranormal world. I look forward to going on this journey with her.
Fans of sexy Scotsmen rejoice! Melissa Schroeder has created a brand new paranormal series where a clan cursed with immortality desperately tries to find an end to their curse and must rely on outsiders to find the answers. With this first book in the series we get not only a slew of drool-worthy heroes but a nice bit of high action and a ton of sexual tension with a few steamy sexual interludes.
Callum has been the head of the clan since he was a boy and felt a great weight on him to protect his family, never doing anything to jeopardize their safety. It's led him to be overly cautious, never letting anyone fully into his life. Of all of them, he's the most serious and obsessed with business. At least until Dr. Phoebe Chilton enters his life.
Phoebe was a child prodigy with an off the charts IQ who attended college as a teenager. She always did as her parents wanted, even when it came to who she married. After being made to feel like a failure in the marriage bed by her dying husband she decides she's had enough and takes on a project that will forever change her life. Upon meeting the rather obnoxious Callum, the sparks soon start flying. There's a silent war going on between the two of them while the attraction between them gets harder to fight. Once they finally give in their sexual encounters are extremely satisfying and well worth the wait. Seeing Callum relaxed was also well worth the wait and he just oozed charm. I definitely started falling in love with him at that point.
Phoebe and Callum were a great match. They both had hard childhoods with the weight of the world on their shoulders. Only by finding each other could they find their happy ending even with the small bumps along the way.
This was a story that started slowly, almost too slowly. Once it hit the mid-point though things really picked up to a fast-paced and exciting conclusion. The villain in this story was very stereotypical and didn't really have much of an impact until the latter half of the story. But once he made his presence known he added a good dose of excitement. What really made this story for me were the other members of the clan with their distinct looks and personalities. Among them was the studious Angus, the flirty Fletcher, and the poetic Logan. I loved each and every one of them and can't wait until they get their own stories and have to sacrifice for love.
This was an entertaining story that started slow but gained momentum to a rip-roaring conclusion. There's a bit of intrigue to keep you waiting with bated breath for the next release and if the idea of a super sexy Scotsman with his sensual brogue doesn't tantalize you, I don't know what will. So all you lords and lassies should definitely put this on your reading list.
Five days. That's how long it took me to read this book. You all know that is completely NOT normal for me and I honestly have no good reason why. This book just never grabbed me. I enjoyed the story and the premise for the series. I just didn't fall in love with either Callum or Phoebe as characters.
That being said though, this is the start of what could be a really promising new series. While this particular story wasn't my favorite, I think that overall I am going to enjoy the story and the books to come in the series.
Warning: the next little bit of this review will have story spoilers. I don't think that they will ruin the book for you because I felt like it was fairly obvious from the beginning, but this is something which wasn't revealed until about halfway through the book.
The premise of this story is that the Lennon cousins are immortal. They are searching for a cure to that immortality (i.e. the curse that they have lived with for the last 250+ years.) They want to live a normal life and death. They bring in Phoebe who is an archaeologist to translate a diary they believe belonged to the witches who issued the original curse.
From the very beginning, there is a strain between Callum and Phoebe. He's harsh and dictatorial. She is competant, but feeling guilty about her true reasons for being there. Nevertheless, she does stand up to Callum on the issues that she feels that she needs to. Phoebe has an awful history...a single love affair (her dead husband) which was degrading, a childhood never lived, overbearing parents. Everything about her history would point to a personality that should be cowed, but that isn't her character. After the death of her husband, she decided to stand up for herself....but still something about her personality didn't sit right to me. Callum is the perfect Mr. Darcy type- cold, but that cold exterior is hiding true passion. He's been the one holding the cousins together all this time and is tired of the responsibility. He wants to lose himself in Phoebe.
Like I said, I honestly have no idea why this book didn't strike that certain chord with me. The story was there and was very well developed. I didn't connect with the characters, but usually I can get past that. I can promise you though that won't keep me from looking forward to the next installments in the series. I want to know how all this plays out for all the cousins.
A very enjoyable start to a new series. Callum Lennon is an enigmatic leader of his family’s business and also the Laird of his clan. He works closely with several cousins to oversee the welfare of the family. Phoebe Chilton is an expert on archeology and languages that is hired by the Lennon family to help with an unnamed artifact.
Callum and family are hesitant to trust Phoebe with the artifact without her signing a contract and Phoebe insists she never signs contracts, so a stalemate seems to doom the project before it has started. Finally Phoebe convinces Callum that even though she is unwilling to sign anything, she can help the family with what is needed. Callum reveals that the artifact is an old diary believed to be owned by witches several centuries ago.
Phoebe has taken this job as a sideline to what she normally does, which is work with her parents (and in the past, her deceased husband) traveling all around the world on various archeological digs. She has decided to break free from her parents, much to their dismay, and follow a passion she has for Celtic legends. She has been promised a chance at an impressive grant from a Kenneth McWalter, a man she has never met. While dealing with McWalter, Phoebe gets an uneasy feeling and tries to find more information about him through her former assistant, Izzy.
As she translates the diary, Phoebe finds herself in close quarters with Callum. The initial attraction they felt only intensifies as they struggle to ignore and resist their feelings. As she learns the secrets of the diary she is also learning the secrets the Lennon family has been keeping for years, the curse that could one day destroy them or set them free.
An old enemy threatens the clan from outside and dishonesty threatens the clan from inside as Callum finds it hard to trust Phoebe. Twists and turns keep you guessing until the end and sets things up for future books involving the rest of the cousins.
Callum Lennan is a responsibility-filled, serious, protective, wealthy Scotsman ~ you know, the type we all Love - strong and silent but filled with all kinds of emotions boiling right below the surface. Callum and his cousins, Angus, Fletcher, Logan, and Anice, have been cursed and they have recently come into possession of a diary that may contain the answers they have been seeking ~ for centuries ~ to reverse the curse. The snag: This diary is written in several languages and codes.
Dr. Phoebe Chilton is the brilliant daughter of world famous English archeologists who is hired to decode the diary for the Lennans. College at age thirteen, fluent in five languages, and with an IQ so high that pretty much no one can complete with her intellengence. She comes from a loveless home life and loveless marriage and with a deep-seeded need to 'prove' herself to her parents. As you will read, Phoebe has a tad bit of baggage that she carries around with her, but her passion for research gives her the skills needed to help this family ~ if she can break through their air of secrecy and distrust. At the initial meeting between Callum and Phoebe, their attraction to one another takes them both by surprise; however, no matter how much Callum is attracted to Phoebe, he keeps his guard up for fear of having the family's secrets exposed.
With a centuries-old feud still in place between Clans McLennan and McWalton, you can be sure there is plenty of intrigue in this romantic suspense offering from Melissa Schroeder. I referred to this book as 'romantic' but, do not get me wrong, there is plenty of 'hotness' to satisfy all of Melissa's usual erotic book readers. Melissa definitely knows how to draw her reader in and keep them involved throughout the entire story and I can hardly wait to read the upcoming "Angus" story.
Callum: The Cursed Clan is the beginning of a new series by Mel Schroeder. This series is based on five cousins, led by Callum Lennon. Their heritage is centuries old and each have been cursed with immortality. None of them have risked truly falling in love, because none of them could face the longevity of losing the person that means so much to them and continuing to live an existence without them. This is until they find a diary that may hold the secrets to breaking the curse. Only problem is that the diary is not decipherable until they find one intelligent archaeologist who has the potential to decode the diary, turn their lives upside down, give each cousin hope and one cousin in particular the love that he never thought was possible.
The tension between Callum and Pheobe is intense from the outset. Ms. Schroeder has the ability to draw the reader in from the beginning and enjoy watching each likeable character grow as the story develops. Although this is mainly about Callum and Pheobe and watching them fall in love, there is a true essence of family and desperation to break the curse that has kept the five cousins together for centuries. There are many questions left unanswered in this book and hopefully as each instalment tells the story of one of the cousins, the answers will be revealed. This is a brilliant start to a series that has lots of promise, it is a quick, hot and sexy read that can get the reader easily absorbed into the world of the gorgeous Lennons. I am already looking forward to reading the next book to see what happens next.
I seriously love Melissa Schroeder and she is the only erotic romance author that I read, so when I heard she was writing a new series, I jumped at the chance to read it! I was not at all disappointed in Callum: The Cursed Clan and I am excited for the next book in the series!
Callum Lennon is the leader of his family. He is protective, responsible and serious. Callum, along with his family have been cursed for centuries and it isn't until they find a diary written in different languages and codes that they think they could break the curse. The only problem they have with the diary is that they have to hire an outsider to help them, and this does not sit well with Callum.
He hires Dr. Phoebe Chilton, genius extraordinaire and the attraction between the two of them was hot from their very first meeting! Phoebe will take her job seriously and wants to help Callum and his family. The only problem is she can't get break down Callum's walls to trust her enough.
Despite the hot and sexy scenes, this isn't a erotic novel, which is something different for Ms. Schroeder. She took a leap with this one, writing out of her comfort level and she did an extraordinary job! The plot was really interesting and the story flew by quickly. I am very much looking forward to reading the second book in the series, which will be about Callum's cousin, Angus!!
Callum Lennon is a cranky, reclusive, wealthy Scot with a problem. He and his cousins were cursed in the 1700’s. They have recently come into possession of a diary that may contain the way to break the curse. The problem is it is written in several languages and in code. Enter Phoebe Chilton. Phoebe is the daughter of famous archeologists, went to college at thirteen and is now a widow from a horrible marriage. She does however possess the skills to decode the diary. Sparks both good and bad fly between Phoebe and Callum from almost the instant they meet.
I’ve read and enjoyed several of Ms. Schroeder’s erotic romances. This is not an erotic romance despite some very toasty scenes. I’d call it romantic suspense with a paranormal feature (the curse). That being said, I LOVED this story. Hot Scots, action, adventure, and mystery what’s not to love? Bring on Angus.
Callum's story is the first in the Cursed Clan series and I have to say, this author picked a great character to start with.
As the head of his family it is Callums job to keep the peace and protect his own... but the curse is making it more and more difficult to do that. The Lennon's have enlisted the help of Phoebe in an attempt to break the curse and on top of everthing else, Callum now finds himself having to fight his attraction to the young women.
While I could have done with this story being a little longer and more in depth, I was pleased with how it ended, leaving the perfect opening for the next in this series. I loved all of the Lennon's and can't wait to see how each story unfolds.
This story was much more than a romance story. It was an adventure with romance. I was given an ARC of this book in Netgalley, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this story. It is just enough paranormal that if you love that genre, you will be sated. However, if you dont love this paranormal, it is just enough of a great story that you will enjoy it also. It didnt weigh you down with sex, it wasnt your typical "virgin girl meets player guy". It defied a lot of rules in your typical love story, and kept me interested until the very end. I am anxious to read about the other cousins of the McLennan Clan in future books.
Seriously surprised with Callum! I have read other books from Melissa which were thoroughly entertaining and may have caused me to fan myself, a few times :)
That's what I was expecting. I was wrong. Now that doesn't mean Callum Lennon isn't hot as anything but this is definitely a paranormal "romance". Yes, they are attracting to each other right away and they think tons of dirty thoughts. But the story isn't all about that.
The curse isn't that much of a surprise but I like how it is being revealed in pieces. I can't wait to read about the rest of the Lennons to see how it unfolds.
Melissa Schroeder did it again. I love all her work, and this was just as yummy as the rest but different.
This book and the whole series is basically across the world from her beloved Harmless series which mostly takes place in Hawaii. So you think, OK how is this gonna be?
Well its awesome of course. The woman can write anything! The out of this world futuristic stories, to historical romance, military suspense romance, I mean wow.
ADORED THIS BOOK!!! What is not to like about a strong willed Scotsman IN A KILT?!?! I've read it several times now (and those who know me will know that isn't a normal thing) and I seriously can't wait for Melissa Schroeder to find it in her heart (ok in her schedule) to get the other books in the series to us.
I absolutely loved this story!! I loved the characters and the setting and most of all I loved Callum. I loved the accents and language used as well. Melissa Schroeder hit another home run with this story. The chemistry between the two MCs is dynamic. This was a perfect sensual romance novel.
