First Read 3/2014

I have a super bad headache tonight so I'm gonna keep this short and to the point. Lucas the 6th book in the Vampires in America series was a really good read. I would have liked it better if Kathryn wasn't running from her feelings the whole book, but still Good. Lucas was a charming easy going guy, but he kicked ass when needed. Kathryn was a by the books FBI agent that didn't have time for love. I loved Kathryn and Lucas together. They would catch fire whenever they were around each other. The plot was good. I liked that it ended with her brother being found safe. Overall it was a good read but not the best in the series.

Well, I now know why the terrorists are winning.
Katherine is an FBI agent and is so freaking stupid that a kid who has watched enough Blues Clues could probably have done a better job looking for the missing person in this book. And, at least the kid wouldn't have been stopping their investigation every 5 minutes to have sex with a vampire. The only thing delaying the kid's investigation would be nappy time.
Hell, Katherine isn't qualified to be a mall cop.

Someone gotta keep these gangsta's in line, yo!

Katherine is looking for her brother and meets our irresistible vampire lord, Lucas, during her search. Lucas acts completely unprofessional and like a young fuck-boy asshole, and then lies to her about pretty much everything while getting way too heavy-handed. So, of course she has sex with him. That'll teach him!

He also makes it abundantly clear that he is on the side of vampires instead of her, and he actively tries to stop her from questioning a vampire that was last seen with her brother.

Pick a side. Nobody is neutral.

Lucas was supposedly sooooo charming that women fell all over him, but I just didn't see it. He was super sexually aggressive and loved embarrassing her. And, that's on top of his misogynistic archaic ideas about women, his OTT jealousy (he was actually jealous that she thought finding her brother was more important than paying attention to him), and his insistence that he be treated like some sort of royalty - in America! Let me fill you in on a little secret, asshole; the only people treated like royalty in this country are celebrities and maybe a famous internet cat. Not asshole dudes that call themselves "Lord" and make everyone bow down to them. I would want to grab a wooden stake within moments of meeting this asshole. I just couldn't imagine women flocking to his behavior.

Plus, he also does that thing that horrible bosses do. This is when he and his vamps are on their way into a dangerous situation to fight and his vamps are giving him the low down:

Lucas nodded. “What about numbers?”

“The scout who took a look is no master vampire, so it’s a best guess. He says more than ten, fewer than twenty. All on the ground floor and, he assumes, the basement.”

“The basement is almost certain,” Nick commented.

“Agreed,” Zelma said. “And we have to assume the number of fighters is on the high end of his estimate. If it’s lower, fine. If not, we’re prepared.”

“I’m not worried about numbers,” Lucas reminded them impatiently. “I’ll know who’s in that house as soon as I’m on-scene.”

Zelma dipped her head, clearly embarrassed. “Apologies, my lord.”

Ugh! Can I kill him? Please?
I actually need to take some deep breaths at this point and remember the teachings of Buddha:

4.5 Love This Series Stars

I just finished this book and guess what? Ok, so you won't have to think hard to guess how I felt about it...

Kathryn is an FBI agent and after her brother goes missing she decides to go to South Dakota where he last was and try to find him, alive or dead. What she never expected when she started her investigation was to fall face first in a war between two Vampire Lords, neither did she expect to fall in love with one.

My Kathryn...

All Kathryn ever wanted for herself in life was to be an FBI agent. She practically raised herself and her brother after their mother's death and has always been a control freak. Now her life seems to have gotten completely out of hand and she has to decide if she wants to really live at last, or go back to the neat and uptight way she existed before.

Kathryn is a strong woman with a commitment issue. (I always love a story where the girl is the one who is afraid of relationships.) She craves action that her work for the FBI hasn't provided yet and has aspirations for a better position in the agency. Of course everything begins to change when she meets Lucas. But can she get over her trust issues and she if what she has with the vampire lord will last?

My Lucas...

Lucas is 200 years old and a playboy through and through. He had an awful childhood but he didn't let it destroy his life, instead he lives to the fullest, enjoys every moment. Of course this doesn't mean that he can't be a badass when he needs to be, after all he is a Vampire Lord and that in itself means he is powerful enough and determined enough to destroy his enemies when the need arises.

Lucas will want Kathryn from the very first moment but he will have to work hard in order to persuade her that they are meant to be together, especially since she doesn't want to admit her feelings. But Lucas refuses to be denied what he believes belongs to him and he isn't about to let her run from their relationship.

The book was once again great. I really think that, after Cyn and Raphael, these two are my favorite couple in this series so far. I kind of missed Cyn and Raphael though...This is the first book in this series in which they don't appear at all!:(

And once again we had our expected cliffhanger in the end. I hope the next book is as good as all in the series so far. I can't begin to explain how much I dislike the fact that now I have to wait months for the next book of yet one more series. *crying silently*

************1st re-read 4/11/2014************

Hmm... I saw a few things that I didn't like that I hadn't noticed in the first book(like a comment Kathryn makes along the lines "If only Lucas wasn't so gorgeous I would have easily walked away...blah, blah, blah".) Superficial much? I know that no one falls in love at first sight with your brain but I would have prefered it if she had mentioned all the other reasons she couldn't resist him.

Anyway... Still love the book.

He gazed down at the sniveling vampire dispassionately, then stepped back and started breaking bones, beginning with the little ones, fingers and toes, the delicate bones in the hand. Heintz groaned softly as first, but by the time Lucas had started on the big bones- the tibia and fibula in the calf, the thick femur in the thigh- the vampire was grunting like a rutting pig, the only sounds of pain he was able to make. Bloody tears streamed down his face as he groveled on the ground, unable to even wipe the snot from his chin.

DAMMMNNNNN, homey don't play!

The funny thing about this series is that when I started it, I was turned off by all the killing and gore. The vampires in ViA are ruthless, utterly ruthless. They aren't the hero that takes the high road and doesn't kill the enemy, they are the kinds of heroes that kill the bad guy slowly and with as much pain as possible.

And I kind of love it now.

"Lucas" was one of the high points in the series, after the more disappointing Duncan. I loved Lucas's Irish twist, his little Gaelic touches. I'm a huge sucker for anyone calling his love, a cuisle, and Lucas just stole my heart.

I also think that Kathryn was a great female MC, holding her own and being a nice counterpart to Lucas. She is no Cyn, but Cynthia happens to be one of my all time favorite female MCs. Kathryn was strong, loyal and was someone I absolutely rooted for.

I hope more people discover this HIGHLY underrated series. It is awesome and continues to deliver.

5 Stars!! Bad-ass of the Badlands! I'm lusting for Lucas!

Lucas is such a conceited bastard, but yet I loved every inch of this sweet ,sexy, scrumptious, playful, arrogant, yummy Irish vampire! Kathryn is a strong female heroine, and the perfect counterpart for Lucas! Lots of delicious gore, intense passion, and some amusing moments... the perfect paranormal package. Another terrific installment in this outstanding vampire series! Oh, and a delectable second to hunger after...Nicholas! More please...

I'm wondering if the author might go in the way of an m/m at some point considering the relationship that was formed between 2 of the characters. I'm hoping maybe a novella, there is definitely a story waiting to be told!

In contrast to the 1st 5 books, this one just fell flat for me. It was just so… boring. It lacked something. I was not connecting with either of the main characters. I mean it was not terrible, but I definitely had a harder time finishing this book than the rest of the books in this series. I did like the ending though. 2 stars

Things that you might want to know (WARNING: Spoilers below)
Is there a happy/satisfying ending?

Holy freaking shit!!!
Book 6 was it for me!
Actually Lucas was, to be perfectly honest...

Elusive, dark, dangerous, merciless, sexy killer vamp Lord with a fucking awesome sense of humor...

That got me good!!!

he's a predator with a sensitive side...who protects and cherishes what is his...and he certainly knows a lot about seduction...

just kill me now!
Seduction was the slow, exquisite game of persuading a beautiful woman to come into his arms. To dance with him, to share long and langurous kisses in front of a fire. He loved to stroke a woman's body until she was trembling with desire, until she opened herself willingly, inviting him between her legs and into her body.

He's Irish and he wears leather pants...
Sexy blood sucker...and there's no lack of passion, trust me, raw, wild passion and need!

This was the kiss of two people who'd hungered for each other for days, wanted, waited for this moment. Their kiss was hard and full of passion, a clashing of teeth and tongue, biting and licking, mouths mashed together...

Yes, well there's more going on in the story than passion and hot sex, there's actually a very interesting plot too

28 year old FBI's Special Agent Kathryn Hunter from Virginia

finds out that her brother Daniel is missing and that he was last seen in the area ruled by Lord Lucas Donolon. That is another state and totally out of her jurisdiction of law inforcement so she takes a leave of absent and goes on her own to investigate in search of the needed information.
The encounter with the elusive and dark vampire Lord Lucas makes her edgy and itchy cause under her buttoned up posture is hiding a passionate vivid person that doesn't break easily, doesn't lose control and won't give in an inch as she doesn't trust easily.

Of course Lucas takes that as a challenge and open invitation to conquer and claim BUT things don't look that simple, as he offers to help her with providing the information about her brother, Lucas is dealing with the breach and treason amongst his ranks as well as the ongoing vampire war for the territory...

I liked Kathryn very much - she's strong, determined and tough...

but we also see her softer, emotional side...

and she is not afraid of Lucas, she's bold and out of reach for his powers...

BUT she is afraid of the feelings Lucas awakened in her...

Kathryn hadn't fled because she didn't want him, but because she did. And it terrified her. Finally something she couldn't control, so she'd fled the scene rather than face him.

AND that was the biggest mistake she could have ever made cause...
She thought to escape him by running, but he was Vampire, the ultimate predator. And for a true predator, there was nothing more exciting than the hunt. Especially one with the promise of blood and sex at the end.

the banter between them is brilliant...with a lot of humor
"What the fuck were you thinking with these stupid leggings"
"I was thinking I didn't want to fuck anyone."
"Good thinking since you didn't know I would be there."

Lucas dropped both hands to her ass, swearing when he encountered the stupid leggings once more. "Fuck this," he snarled and dropped to his knees, dragging the offending pants down her legs and over her bare feet...

I must say that this book and its characters, both Lucas and Kathryn are standing next to the throne that Raphael and Cyn hold...

and i have just one little notification regarding all the books in these series, these vamps all so if anyone has an itch regarding that, you would probably find it annoying... OR NOT.
Your choice in the matter.

Maru: A determined SOB who I think will die at Raphael´s hand
Aly: I don't think so =))
Maru: I hope so...ahahaha Ok, so for this book overall, what did you think?
Aly: It was great, though the kidnapping thing was a little bit... redundant.
Maru: Yes...I think that she needed some background to get the hero & heroines cross their paths
Aly: That's true...
Maru: I really like the interactions they had, how they started. I think it´s one of my fave couples
Aly: They were great together :)) Mine too, after Raphael and Cyn ;;)
Maru: Yes!! Of course!!
Aly: Now, the thing that really stayed with me was the brutal vampire war. What do you think of the tactics and the war in general?
Maru: Agreed!! It´s one of the most bloody books of the series. I really don´t understand shite about them, but I think that whatever helped the good guys win worked

Aly: The way that idiot Klemens attacked the children and women...
Maru: the bad guys were really, really bad, like down to their very core
Aly: I can't believe that they would do that!
Maru: Exactly!! like who does that!?!?Crazy mother-f****rs.
Aly: We're so not cut out for that stuff :))

Maru: I liked also that we got to learn about vamp stuff too
Aly: Yes. I like how she keeps building the world up. Now I wanna know: what did you like most in Lucas?

Maru: The world building keeps getting better with each book. Mmm...his bluntness, the way he took what he wanted and how good he seemed in the sack. You? Ohhh...and that he LOVED horses, brings to mind the saying "save a horse, ride a cowboy"
Aly: I actually loved his Irish =)))))))))))))
Maru: And THAT!!!
Aly: And of Kathryn?
Maru: Kickass
Aly: Mhm, and her love of family!
Maru: I really liked her!
Aly: I really admired her, that she didn't back down.
Maru: Yeah, she had clear her goals and didn´t quit when things got though.
Aly: Last thing: the ending! Both of them gave their pride up and met in the middle it was great!
Maru: Yes!!! LOVED IT!!!!!! I think that´s all ... at least for me. And the things I forgot you brought them up.
Aly: For me too... now, I don't even have to ask, but the rating would be...?
Maru: 5? or 4.5?
Aly: 5 for me had too much fun reading it to give it less
Maru: 5 for me too

BONUS:

We couldn’t decide between pictures =))

Lucas, Lucas, Lucas...how I waited for you! I was so excited for you. I have an Irish heritage and your background made me so anticipate where you were going to go. When I saw you early on Amazon I immediately jumped on you! You can imagine my surprise as I read your story.
I was into the premise. The bones were strong. The tension was where??? I mean there was a war brewing! So along comes this leggy blonde with a missing brother with no ties to this war and all of the sudden the war takes second seat? Then the attraction is lukewarm. This man is known to be a ladies man. Lucas loves them all. Kathryn has the sexuality of a red snapper. The woman does not ooze at all. You want to attract this man? So you dress in gym shoes, leggings under an old dress and a jacket with a plain bra??? Yeah..I am seeing how much you want to draw ANY man/vampire.
Her missing brother story was so far out of left field it was in Mongolia. What the heck did this have to do with this story other than bring her onto his radar? At least with the other stories the mates were tied to each other by some type of involvement in their lives.
Don't get me wrong. I love this series. I love D.B. but Lucas, baby, just let me down. Well, not Lucas...cause he was just delicious. Kathryn however needed a Miss Congeniality make over and a Michael Cain coach desperately!

Wow! This series just gets better and better with each book. Lucas would have to be one of the most charismatic vampires in this series. He's hot, charming and very talented, both in and out of bed. I'm sure I saw smoke coming out of my Kindle. The chemistry that he and Kathryn create certainly sizzles.

Plot wise it's well rounded, fuller, in depth and of course action packed. DB Reynolds has won me over again with this. It's a winner!

The book isn’t good enough to keep me interested a second time around.
The FMC is useless, and the MMC is an irritating player.
I’m not sure the plot made any sense at all. Two rangers that all of a sudden decide to kidnap a man. Why?
I would not rate this more than 2 generous star.

3 1/2

I had a mixed reaction to Lucas. As a romance is as nice as the previous one, somewhat even better, because they do nor rush the "L" word at all. There's no marathon to mate.

At the same time I couldn't stop thinking about missing possibilities.
At last we had a woman with the same potential as Cynthia: tough, intelligent, determined. But all of this was wasted in the story. In Cyn's case she saves the day twice. Here all that brain power was.. Well, I'm not even sure it was there.

She is an FBI Special Agent, as she often reminds people. Pity here her sleuthing abilities were non existent.
She doesn't save her brother, she doesn't really help Lucas.

As I said missed possibilities. What I loved in the first two books was the UF prevalence over romance and a human woman who did not bend to vampires. (Well, ok Raphael too.. :P)

Since book 3 I've been waiting for the same. So, nothing wrong with the book, but my expectations are always high for this series.

I LOVED Lucas!! Really really loved it/him!

Let's start with a bit of a blurp:
Kathryn Hunter is a special agent with the FBI, taking some time off to search for her missing brother. Her investigation brings her on the doorstep of the Lord of Plains Territory (South Dakota) Lucas Donlon, who is at war with a sadistic neighbor Lord. Instant attraction and danger pretty much follows.

I admit I was a little worried... I'm all for Raphael/Cyn in these series. I don't really care about the others and I didn't particularly enjoyed Rajmund and Duncan. I wanted more of my favourite couple....

And then comes Lucas.
He caught me completely unaware with his Irish accent, charm and huge golden eyes... I think Raphael has some serious competition to overcome!!!

Kathryn is a strong female lead, that takes no bullshit but she knows when to turn to putty in Lucas capable hands. My kind of girl...

The next book is called Aden. With the way this one ended, I can only assume (and pray) that it will involve Lucas and Kathryn. I definitely want to read more about this two!!! PLEASEEEEEEE!

Another great addition to the VIA series!! Loved Lucas!! The ending surprised me by revealing a traitor within Lucas' circle. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series since I think there will be plenty more of Lucas along with Raphael!!!!

Book Description:
Book SIX of the award-winning Vampires in America.

Page Count: 308 pages

My Thoughts:
Where to begin in my review of Lucas? There was so much to this story! Reynolds hit another one out the park with this installment in the Vampires in America (ViA) series.

Primary Characters:
• Lucas Donolon - Vampire Lord of the Plains Territory
• Kathryn Hunter - FBI Special Agent and older sister of the missing photographer

Secondary Characters:
• Nick - Lucas' second in command, bodyguard, and friend
• Klemens - Lucas' archrival and enemy
• Dan(iel) - Kathryn's brother
• Alex - Vampire and art gallery proprietor (associate of Daniel)
• Kurt - Vampire and bartender at the bloodhouse (associate of Daniel)
Lucas is witty, charming, sexy, and lethal like only a vampire lord can be. Kathryn is assertive, strong, and kicka$$ and a perfect counterbalance to Lucas.

Kathryn Hunter, is a special agent with the FBI in Quantico, VA who is on a frantic mission to find her missing photographer brother, Dan. Her search leads her to South Dakota and smack dab in the middle of the Plains vampire lord's territory. Lucas Donolon was born in Ireland in 1785 and as a poor thief became wary of the Guarda, the Irish police, but who should turn up on his doorstep? The equivalent of the American police, Kathryn Hunter. Lucas has his mental shields up and his aggressive demeanor in place expecting a Battle Royale with a Brunhilde agent. But, oh how wrong he was. Kathryn, is tall, blonde, curvy, and beautiful and Lucas decides that he WILL have her!

Of course, Kathryn is having none of it, or so she thinks. Her mind and body war against one another in its desire for Lucas. Her mind thinks he is a arrogant and cocky.
There was one moment is the story where, said of Kathryn, "the urge to punch him was growing stronger".
But, her body...oh her body wanted him with a fierceness that rivaled anything she ever felt before.

Lucas and Kathryn decide that it is in their mutual best interests to look for Dan. Lucas, because of his desire to get closer to Kathryn, and Kathryn because of the access that he can provide her with. But while trying to help Kathryn, Lucas is engaged in a battle with a deadly vampire lord, Klemens, who wants Lucas' territory and will stop at nothing to get it. More importantly, Klemens is responsible for the attack that occurred on Raphael in Betrayed: A Cyn & Raphael Novella and for a deadly attack that killed several of Lucas' people, which require vengeance. Lucas retaliates in a series of swift and deadly counter attacks against Klemens but through all of this, his attraction to Kathryn grows.

This story was such an interesting series of twists and turns like only Reynolds can write. I loved Lucas and Kathryn as protagonists and the byplay between them kept the story very dynamic. The romance between them felt real because it was allowed to grow throughout the story and wasn't an instantaneous "thing" that so often occurs in paranormal romances.

The only factor that kept this story from being a 5 star read was the ending -- the conclusion to the side story of Dan's disappearance. It was just too neat how they found him and who was culpable for it. The kidnap storyline felt contrived because it did not fit the natural flow of the story. I felt that that story should have been a bit more closely tied to the Klemens takeover storyline. But...it was still an excellent story!

Lucas is now rivalling Duncan as my second favorite in the ViA world. His grit and his fire put him a hair ahead of Duncan...but only a hair :).

We met, surprisingly for the very first time, in the previous novella, Lucas who is the first child of Raphael. Lucas is a cowboy vampire. He is lighthearted and fun much more so than any vampire we've met. He's also a ladies man(vampire manwhore or vamwhore 😂). Lucas is about to war with the Lord Klemens who has been encroaching on his territory slowly, finally he has Raphael's blessings to engage....but first he's got a meeting with an FBI agent.

Kathryn's brother has disappeared, with witnesses reporting his presence at a vampire club a meeting with the vampire Lord of the area is necessary.

As usual sparks fly from the moment these two meet but in this instance they weren't as quickly committed to mating as previous couples, as a matter of fact by the end of the book they were not mated at all. It was clear they had a connection but Kathryn didn't think it could work. Thankfully after a short separation they got their shit together.

Another bloody or dusty story as Lucas' war escalated and he actually came close to death, Kathryn's brother was thankfully rescued and the humans responsible for his abduction captured. There were some sweet moments, some funny moments and as with all these books lots of sexy times.

I did skim a bit especially in the beginning, more I think, in eagerness for the couple to actually meet than boredom. All in all I enjoyed this one and am continuing on.

I don't like that Juro hasn't gotten a book or love interest as yet I love him, fingers crossed.

D.B. Reynolds never disappoints! Her Vampires in America is one of my all time favorite series and Lucas is another hit! Don't miss out. Lucas is a MUST read!

Description:

My Thoughts:

What is not to love? A handsome vampire with an Irish accent, a hint of viciousness, the talk of the blarney stone, and oozing self confidence. Yes Lucas is all these things and more. DB Reynolds, has once again delighted me in her crafting of an alpha male vampire who knows how to respect a strong woman and admires that she can give as good as she gets. The book like her others is more than just a vampire romance, in this book the vampires are at war and kathryn (the heroine)s brother is missing. The reader follows Kathryn's anguish as she looks for her brother and falls in love with a vampire. Lucas faces one of his largest challenges and the FBI is along to "help". I am a true fan girl of this series and this author. The stories grab you from chapter one and drag you through the night (up til 4:30am) and won't let go until you read the last word. Then in the epilogue that devious Ms. Reynolds introduces the hero of her next book. I thing she must be a cruel woman to taunt and tease her readers in such a way. I can't wait for Aden!

5 big shiny stars for Lucas. Easy to read, face paced story and characters who you can't help but love..my favorite kind of book. If you don't know the series you must go buy Raphael NOW!!! and you will be whipping through the series so fast you will be at Lucas in no time. If you have read the others you MUST not miss Lucas. No go...go on...get the book...I'll see you in a few hours after you consume it:)

4.5stars and digital version actually
Surprisingly this series is as fresh on the sixth installment as it was at the first in terms of interesting and somewhat thrilling characters; stories with enough variety and plot to make the journey interesting and enough bridging from story to story to ensure relationships but never so much that it becomes the same story over and over. These vampire lords definitely get their own star turns. For this outing the Midwest Vampire Lord Klemens cannot be ignored as he breaks all the laws in his quest to break Raphael's hold. Little does he know that Great Plains Vampire Lord Lucan Donlan is so much more than charm and a pretty face and sculpted body and sensuous lover and bad-a** vampire lord in his own right ( I could go on) and he will not allow encroaching on his territory as the first volleys in the threatened vampire war begins. Just as the first battles begin, FBI Special Agent Kathryn Hunter comes knocking on Lucas' door looking for answers or help in finding her brother who was last seen with a vampire in Lucas' territory. Kathryn was the traditional strong female but was rather predictable in being law enforcement (strong women do have other careers) and the foolhardiness mistaken too often as independence and/or bravery, however she was also fleshed fairly well keeping her from being a caricature. Her devotion to her brother and single-mindedness to locate him gave facets to her personality.
Lucas' household had a couple of vamps that I'd like to know more about - especially Nicholas and Zelma. The boys did get to flex the vamp muscles in vividly drawn action set pieces and of course for those oh so important protective detail scenes. (My nit to pick here is there aren't many powerful female vamps in this 'verse.) Much has been hinted about Klemens over the last couple of books and I personally think more about him was definitely overdue. I also liked the semi-cliffhanger/intro into the next book it was a great ending for this piece.

I really love DB Reynolds Vampires in America Series. It makes me think of the Godfather—only with vampires. It’s a fantastic series and DB Reynolds always does great characters with a very strong hero and heroine. Like Cyn, Kathryn is independent and can hold her own—and even help—the vampires. I was a little annoyed with Kathryn’s inability to admit her feelings for Lucas, but she came around in the end. Lucas on the other hand is a very Alpha, totally swoon worthy hero and I don’t have a single complaint. I did like Raphael better, but I think it’s just because I was introduced to Raphael first so I have a soft spot for him.

Why did I rate this book with 4 stars instead of 5? I found the end of the story just wrapped up way to neat for my liking. The way the story concluded made me feel like there were two separate storylines going and the author only remembered at the last second that she left one unfinished, so she quickly resolved that situation. It felt separate from everything else that had been going on. Other than that this was a fantastic installment to the series.

FBI Special Agent Kathryn´s brother has disappeared, and she just knows something is wrong. Not a word from him, and that´s not like him.
Determined to find him, she takes vacation days to search for him.
When the last trace is a vampire bar, she makes arrangements to question the Vampire Lord Lucas. This meeting sparks more than feelings.
Lucas got a lot on his plate at the moment. His neighboring Vampire Lord Klemens is trying to take over and now FBI is knocking on his door for information. What he didn´t expect was how he responded to this woman.
Smutty fluff, Vampire action and an Alpha male taking charge =)
Love this series! Can´t wait to read Aden´s story.

I already said just how much I love this series despite the very unfortunate covers here and here.

I was trying to analyse why this mix of urban fantasy and paranormal romance suits me so well and came up with a few points:

- the balance of power between hero and heroine. Apart from the unfortunate 3rd book Rajmund, all the women in this series are badass without being overpowering. The same goes for men. There is a great sense of equality that I don't see very often in UF and PNR where there is always some kind of dominance game going on. The main characters admit each other strengths and then work as a team against mutual enemies.

- the chemistry is unbelievable and at the same time there is always some sort of vulnerability in both characters which makes them hesitate reaching for a full blown relationship until the very end. Hell, first book, Raphael doesn't even have a happy ending! You have to read book #2 for this *grinning*

- it's all very modern and vampires utilise all the advantages of human technology instead of being stuck in Dark Ages.

So for me the paranormal romance and the urban fantasy sides of the story totally work.

Lucas has all these elements in abundance, it's also scorching hot and scrumptious when you read about both Lucas and Kathryn's interactions. The plot is pretty simple but not silly and although I wished for a deeper mystery I still read this book in one go and enjoyed it very much! I'd say Lucas is almost as hot as the first book Raphael...

Very much recommended.

Sometimes a reader picks up a book looking for suspense, action, a kick-arse heroine, a powerful possessive hero, and some love scenes that leave you reaching for your man and putting a big smile on his face....after finishing the book of course! LOL That is what I was looking for, and Reynolds did not let me down.

Kathryn was an amazing character. She was strong, self-reliant, and far from needy. It is so refreshing to read a female character which challenged her love interest, not in an irritating way, simply in a way of asserting her strengths and intelligence. Kathryn is an incredibly well written heroine!

Lucas....his name alone gives me chills. Dominating, a "Lord" no less, possessive, deadly, and as all hero's should be exceptionally sexy. I LOVED the tit-for-tat between Lucas and Kathryn, the added quips between the two made them feel like real people and drew me in.

This was my first D.B. Reynolds read and I must have more. This world was exciting and well written. The storyline was phenomenal and had me on the edge of my seat trying to solve the mystery of Kathryn's missing brother. The love story was steamy, sexy, and explosive....I'm in love with Reynolds writing!

I discovered the Vampires in America books earlier this year, and I couldn't read them fast enough! I was really sad when I finished Duncan and realized that it was the last one in the series so far. So, when Lucas FINALLY came out, I was so excited, because I knew it would be another amazing book in this incredible series.

I was totally right! Not only was this book just as good as the previous ones, but I think that Lucas is now my favorite vampire. I don't know what was hotter about him: the way he violently destroyed his enemies while laughing the whole time, or the sexy Gaelic phrases he would regularly say to Kathryn. Ohh! That man just did it for me!!

The only bad thing I can possibly say about this book is that my feelings of sadness have returned one again because there's nothing left to read in this series. I really hope that Aden (the next book) comes out soon. I can't be responsible for my actions otherwise. :)

There is no dearth of vampire romance stories out there, but this one has a display of tactical stratagem and weaponry that separates it from its threadbare equivalents. In book 6 in the Vampires In America series, the fanged hero, Lucas, delivers bloodshed and retribution to maintain his lordship, at the same time wielding the force of his irresistible charm to woo FBI Agent, Kathryn. While Lucas' amiability made him easy to love, it was Kathryn's skill with high-powered rifles and her inner I-am-woman zeal that kept me turning pages. DB never disappoints in her inventions of strong female leads. Same could be said about her skill at writing sexy scenes. Amidst the gun fights and fisticuffs (or fangicuffs as it were), there was a romantic softening, a reluctant love story. One that kept me pining for this couple till the very end.

This is an awesome series so this book is awesome as well. War is coming and Lucas, Lord of the Plains Territory was making the first move into the Midwest Territory let the War begin.
FBI Agent Kathryn Hunter was on vacation because she could not prove her brother, Daniel has been kidnapped. She is on her own for as long as she has vacation time to search for Dan. He was last seen at a Blood House on land owned by Lucas Donlan so she was on her way to ask question of this Vampire Lord. Kathryn's search for Daniel and Lucas's war and all those involved vampire and human cross and not all are HEA's. This is a intense love story but a mystery as well. I was surprised by who the kidnapper of Daniel was. You will enjoy this one!!!!

9-6-17 Re-read and still is a great fun read.
7-20-21 Re-re-read. Still awesome series

Awesome!!! Loved this book. My favorite of the series so far. The heroine in this book is completely likeable. Rarely do I care much for a heroine, but Kathryn was so real. She could have been anyone. She was capable of mistakes, wasn't trying to be a man, and had no TSTL moments. I loved how the author handled the mystery of the heroine's missing brother. I can't say more without spoilers, but I really, really, liked the unconventional outcome. I love it when story's surprise you. What the author did with the storyline was simple and unexpected. Loved it. More, more, more! Can't wait to get my hands on the next book. I'm close to catching up with what is available in the series. Write fast, Mrs. Reynolds, write fast!

I absolutely LOVED EVERY SINGLE THING about Lucas!!!! So Good!! Lucas *sigh* This continues to be one of my favorite series. It just keeps getting better (and it was pretty AWESOME to begin with!!) and I can't wait for the next book. I love the way D.B. writes~her stories always entertain me and I never want them to end. Lucas added more great characters that I hope to read about again. Not only do I want to reread Lucas, I want to go back and reread the series from the beginning!! :) This is definitely one of the better covers. lol ;) 5 out of 5 rating.

Maybe 3.5ish. Ok, im thinking these are becoming a bit repetitive. The story was a bit on the boring side, kinda slow. Now, I love this series and I did like Lucas, I think my problem was with Katherine, I did not like her at all. I actually wanted to smack her, for an F.B.I agent I found her to be not so smart. She was a pain in the ass. When I hate a character, the book becomes difficult. Well, I'll chalk it up to you can't love them all in a series, well, you can, but, this didn't quite work for me. I've got Aiden, the next one, so, I'll give it a whirl and see how it goes.
