I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A private investigating firm finds themselves in the middle of a strange phenomena in author Sarah Baethge’s novel Right Now. Here’s the synopsis:

Lilly Aldern finds herself without a job,so she is hired to work as a secretary for her brother and his partner. When investigating the workings of an aerospace company, Legacy Towers, they come across a strange man named Joe that should have his own knowledge of their workings; yet his memory of the past has somehow been almost completely taken away.
Strangely, this seems to have enabled a brief glimpse of the future for him.

This short read was a great way to delve more into the works of author Sarah Baethge. With her recent release The Illumination Query, it was fun to explore the creative force behind that novel in this short story. Exploring a unique twist on the time travel/seeing the future storyline, we get to see a man who’s memories are replaced with visions of the future, and one person’s struggle to accept that reality. It was full of strong imagery, and left things on a cliffhanger of sorts that begged for more story to be told.

Overall I loved the story. It was a very quick read, but is worth the purchase if you’re looking for a quick, gut-punch of a science fiction thriller. If you haven’t yet be sure to pick up your copy of Right Now by Sarah Baethge today!

This was a good short story once it got going.

The start was a detailed explanation of what the detective agency investigates and why. This was a little boring and it could have been added later once the story had already gripped you.

The actual story plot was very good, it involved a detective agency made up of 2 detectives and a receptionist, they take on a case and in the course of the investigation come upon a man who has been locked away in a shed. They rescue him. This man has been experimented on, he now has the ability to see into the future but it is not perfected and the consequence is that he has forgotten a lot of his past.

This could have been developed into a full length book and would have been better for it.

The investigation itself was never completed.

The writing style is easy to read and I will read more by Sarah but I advice her to re-work this piece as it could be an excellent novel.

Stars 3/5 – I liked it.

This was a very short story. Though I liked it, I still felt that it would have been better if it would have been longer.

The concept was really good but the story needed to be developed more. There are few visible gaps that sort of broke the reading pace. Long sentences and complicated explanations sometimes dragged the narration and made me go back over what was being said.

The end was unexpected and very different, but a bit of clarity on how it came about, would have been wonderful. Overall a good attempt.

This is an interesting short story about roundabout goings-on at an aerospace company, as seen through the eyes of a young woman working there. The concept is very sound, and would definitely benefit from lengthening, which would explore the story in much more detail, as what is presented is very intriguing. The serio-comic atmosphere keeps the story fresh and readable until the end.

Well written with a good style and tone. The idea was good too. However, the development of characters could have been better, which would have brought the story alive. Worth a look and I will certainly be watching for more.

Got this as a free ebook from the author; again, I appreciate Ms. Baethge’s generosity in making her works available for comment with no financial recompense.

This is more of a long short story, which seems more of a first chapter in a longer work. It is narrated by Lilly Aldeern, who is hired as secretary to her brother, Robert, and his detective-agency partner Timothy Creed. They are competent albeit disorganized, hence the hiring of Lilly. The story is that the boys are hired to investigate Legacy Towers, a sort of aerospace research company, to see if they are doing anything untoward. Well, they break in and find, in a shed, a disheveled man named Joe, who, it turns out, can tell the future, and proves it several times over the course of the story. Seems that Legacy Towers has been doing some vague experimentation of Joe and perhaps others, which has left him with some memory problems but also with the aforementioned future-telling ability. At the end of the story, the boys look to hire Joe to help their business.

That’s it! Fun little story, but I want more! Hey, Ms. Baethge, is this just a teaser for a future book? Inquiring minds want to know!
