Spring Valley's golden girl is found floating face-down in her boyfriend’s pool, hands bound behind her back, head bleeding, drugs and alcohol in her system. Her friends are the only suspects – and they all have reasons to want her dead. Everyone has an alibi, but no one is innocent.
ALIBI is a 4-part young adult e-book series. Each one-hundred page installment reveals the perspective of a different character: the secret love, the nemesis, the boyfriend, the best friend. As their tales unfold, we learn that Abby is not as perfect as everyone believes, but she’s not the only one with secrets to hide. This page-turning tale of suspense, betrayal, murder, and lust will keep fans of Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars up and reading well past curfew.
Bravo to twist Literary. This is a whole new way to tell a story. Four authors, four 100 page books, one event. Each author writes from their character's point of view. It is very unique and fun and it works with Alibi. Every one has an alibi. No one is innocent. The stories all revolve around the murder of a young girl, Abby. Each author tells the mystery from their character's point of view, recalling what happened leading up to and after the murder. I really liked how one story sometimes filled in the blanks left in another character's story. You get a feel for each of the suspects and get to see events through their eyes. All of the characters are flawed, as are real people, which makes them more real to me. They all have secrets that will be revealed, including Abby. You may not like all of them, but you will get drawn into their stories. This is a great who-dun-it with all of the mystery, lies and alibis(had to say it) required to keep you guessing and searching for clues, which are doled out slowly. I had a sense of who the killer was about halfway through, but as with all great mysteries, you never really know until the end. Alibi made me think and ask questions. Polish up your detective skills and put on your thinking caps. Let's solve a murder.
Alibi by John Byrne, Isabel Eckersley, Annie Miles and Twist Literary 4½ stars/5 stars Source: Authors for blog tour review
When I read the synopsis for Alibi (a four novellas into a single novel) I, quite frankly, just wanted to see if multiple authors could synthesize their unique voices into a cohesive story. Not only have the authors brought their voices together they have also pulled together a fantastic story full of lust, betrayal and murder, and all while navigating the treacherous waters of high school.
Each of Alibi’s four novellas tells the same story from a different character’s point of view and while this may sound repetitious, and in some places it is, it actually gives the reader a new and different look at the plot as well as more information about the character telling the story. Each novella is the same story but enhanced and more fully developed by the particular character’s backstory and how he or she came to be involved in the overall plot. The entire plot is quite the doosy as it revolves around the death of Abby, a bitch I can’t drum up even a little bit of sympathy for even when she is found dead! Abby has two distinct sides. There is the public persona who is emotional, lovingly devoted to her boyfriend, and a good student with a bright future ahead of her. Then, there is the other Abby, the one who is manipulative, deceptive, and only ever out for herself and her own gain. Despite her wretchedness, Abby is a sort of magnet who attracts nearly everyone to her and that is exactly how the other major characters have come to be so intimately involved in her death.
Here’s the breakdown: Charles: ah, a hot boy with an accent; does it get any better? Charles lives with his cousin’s family after having been forced to leave his home following an unfortunate event involving his beloved sister. Charles is friendly and kind and though a bit of a man-whore, you still like him and hope he can come through all of the madness surrounding him unscathed.
Palmer: tall, beautiful, smart, and bound and determined not to turn out like her mother. Palmer is driven by her desire to get out of her hometown and graduate from an Ivy League school. While Palmer is generally very focused on her goals she doesn’t count on her strong attraction to Charles and the newly revealed secret regarding the identity of her biological father. The secret and the attraction to Charles cause the usually intelligent Palmer to make some stupid decisions that impact nearly everyone in this twisted little tale.
Ace: Charles’ cousin and Abby’s boyfriend who has always sought yet never achieved the respect of his father. This may be because this poor, pathetic kid takes dumb and pretty to a whole new level. Ace’s insecurities where his body, mind and talents are concerned cause him to make even more stupid decisions than any other character in the novel. Between the drugs, the alcohol, and the general stupidity I’m not quite sure how this boy’s last four brain cells make it through each and every day. Add to all of this is random hook-ups with someone other than Abby and you have a recipe for disaster far too stupid to figure out what he has gotten himself into.
Rowan: Holy balls this chick is serial-killer-in-the-making scary!! Rowan is a scrawny, completely unattractive, generally unnoticed super-nerd who is somehow best friends with Abby. Rowan counts on everyone not noticing her because it allows her to plot, scheme, and manipulate both people and events. Rowan is so detached from all emotion that she actually sees everyone around her as pieces on a chess board rather than human beings. Sadly, this detachment extends to Rowan’s own body which, to her, is merely another tool in her arsenal to be used as a manipulation device. As far as Rowan is concerned each and every one of the other characters has wronged her in some ways and her plots and plans are her vengeance as well as her vindication.
The bottom line: The one thing keeping me from adding the last half star to my review is the very adult nature of this book; these are teenagers acting like adults and in many instances their actions were more than a bit disturbing when you consider their age. Overall, I liked this book alot (disturbing moments excluded ) and found it very difficult to put down once I started reading. The plot becomes more fully developed and complicated as each character tells his or her story. I really enjoyed each character’s perspective, backstory, and how he/she acted and reacted to the others around them. These actions and interactions amp up the drama and the suspense as you hurtle toward Abby’s inevitable death. Despite knowing who “did it” pretty early on I was ridiculously surprised by how the story actually ends. There is no discernable difference between each of the author’s voices so each novella feels like another chapter in a book rather than a completely new section written by a different person. This is a distinct advantage causing the four novellas to feel like a harmonious whole.
ALIBI has been publicized as the next book for fans of Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars. Luckily for me, I followed both those series for the majority of their never-ending books (I gave up on PLL recently.) Note that ALIBI is a 4-part series, and you can buy the series either separately or as a complete volume.
But after reading ALIBI, I can say that isn't a fair remark to make about the series. ALIBI is what Gossip Girl WISHES it was and what Pretty Little Liars SHOULD have been! It's a guilty pleasure read that you won't be able to put down, as the story continues to unravel with secrets galore.
Reasons to Read:
1.Twisted, dark storyline:
Rich kids in YA seem to come with a disclaimer these days: they're messed up. Seriously. And ALIBI is no exception to this, and uses this to its advantage in creating a dark story of murder and betrayal when Abby ends up dead. The question is why and how; and it seems like everyone close to her has a motive and secrets they're keeping. But what I found interesting is that this story wasn't heavy on a mystery, whodunnit plot. After the first couple novellas, you'll most likely have a guess for who killed Abby, but you'll still be dying to know why they did that and what the other secrets there are being kept by the characters. These people are all involved with serious problems.
2.Complex pasts and characters:
I found it so interesting to uncover how much these people were hiding, and the secrets which came out that they were hiding. You really get a great idea of what their priorities are, and it's neat to piece together the whole story by putting together the pieces offered from each character's perspective in their own novella. Charles, Palmer, Ace, and Rowan are such interesting people, and they're nothing like what you expect at first. Not at all.
3.A definite ending:
This is my main complaint about Gossip Girl and PLL; the books just go on and on. While enjoyable at first, after a while you just get tired of watching these characters stumble into the same issues agan and again. ALIBI is fantastic because it incorporates what made those series great (drama, secrets, murder, and mystery) but finds a way to wrap it up. The story focuses on Abby's death and the events leading up to it, but don't feel the need to hash out every other minor detail in their lives and don't see a need to continue on and drag it out. And that's what makes ALIBI such a success.
4.Four distinct voices:
I really enjoyed the multiple perspectives that ALIBI incorporates and I thought it was great that they all stood out as their own, seeing as different authors wrote each novella. Yet they all blended together very well at the same time.
ALIBI really knows how to make it appealing to readers; it plays off of what's exciting and popular, and then uses that to its advantage. This story could easily be a hit, and I think many people are going to find this is their newest guilty pleasure read.
I will say though, that this story only revolves around the events of Abby's death and leading up to it; it doesn't feel the need to continue past this, so you may not feel that everything is all wrapped up neatly with a definite ending. It's left somewhat open ended.
For something that consists of novellas that are only a hundred pages long, I was more than shocked and impressed with what I found inside of the first novella in Alibi; a four part series that takes place after the death of Abigail Shelton. In this review, I’m not going to go through each and every single novella in the series because that will get boring really fast and because I don’t want to ruin anything for you!
In the beginning of the story, after the death of Abby, I had to admit that it was very different than I imagined. It begins with Charles, who is the main suspect in Abby’s murder, and after reading from Charles point of view, I have to admit that I assumed entering into the minds of the other characters: Palmer, Mason and Rowan, wouldn’t be all that different. I was wrong.
I am happy to say that the author(s) did an amazing job at making each of the characters an individual in the eye of every volume/novella. But, I have to admit that it was also becoming a little bit tiresome to have to hear the same conversations over and over again four times. Hopefully you can understand where I’m coming from, but at least I got to see these conversations through new eyes.
The one thing that I found exciting and interesting with these novellas is that they taught me something very important and something that I will cherish for the rest of my life: Nobody is to be trusted. Not to sound paranoid or anything (*la shaky laugh*), but everybody in these novellas is connected in one way or another and even your best friend *cough, cough* Rowan *cough, cough* can’t necessarily be trusted. Especially with your boyfriends. Alibi taught me not to trust best friends with boyfriends for reasons that are spoilers, mwuahahaha.
I personally, enjoyed reading the volume that was in Rowan’s point of view, despite her being a slut. I did like seeing her method of evil genius and the way she forced Palmer into doing her bidding and got some serious dirt on the remaining character. The way the volumes all flowed into each other was impressive and all in all I am actually very happy with what the Alibi series has given me. It definitely delivered and will definitely catch the eye of mystery fans. The one thing that I feel I should mention is the sexual innuendo that was mentioned in the novel and the types of sexual innuendo that take place. It’s not a huge issue but something that some readers may find offensive.
I would recommend this to fans of Pretty Little Liars, mystery, anybody who wants a genuine quick read, and readers who enjoy murder mystery.

I've never read a book quite like this one.
Four separate novellas that make up one compelling story. This would make an amazing movie.
I don't really know what I can say about the plot without giving everything away, so I'll tell you about the overall storyline. From the very beginning, we know that Abigail Shelton is dead. She was found in the pool at her boyfriend's house, by his cousin. Everyone is trying to figure out what happened.
Charles is Abby's boyfriend's cousin. Whew! That was a mouthful! So is he. I feel like we get most of the background for the story from Charles, and while he was my favorite character, he was definitely holding back on us.
Next we have Palmer. I'm not gonna lie, guise, I hated her. She goes to school with Charles, Abby, Mason, and Rowan. I can't really tell you anything about her without giving away too much, but just...ugh!
After Palmer, we get Mason's side of things. Known to everyone as Ace, his character seemed to be the least explored to me, but the most authentic. I really loved how he was vulnerable and insecure but still managed to be a total dick.
Finally, we get Rowan's side of things. I didn't like her, either. lol But, her story makes a lot of sense and gives us a good picture of not only what happened, but how things happened to get all of the characters to where they are.
There were a few things that didn't add up for me, but I really enjoyed this quick, hot read with lots of fun, high-schoolish angst. (You know that's my favorite kind.) I had fun figuring out how all of the pieces fit into this puzzle. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from Twist Literary. Check this one out.
Alibi is like a mash-up between Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl. I have not read any book from those series but I do follow the TV show.
Abby was found dead and four people close to her are the suspects, each of them has a motive and an alibi. And as they tell their version of the story, the real culprit is revealed.
I'll start with the cover/s used. I love how pretty they all are, although I am quite disappointed that the model used for Mason is better looking than the one they used for Charles. While reading, I pictured the latter as better looking. Oh well. The model for Palmer is gorgeous! 'Nuff said.
I enjoyed reading this and it's such a refreshing change to read the perspective of everyone involved in the story. They all had their reasons for their actions and they are all misunderstood. The only perspective missing is the one of Abby's, I would have liked to know what was going on in her head with what's going on before her death. If there was open communication with the people involved, they could have prevented this tragedy from happening. But that's how it is with people, we often do something and keep it in secret, and then someone gets hurt.
As I reached the end, I realized the obvious conclusion to who the real culprit is but there were some parts when I felt like it was going to be an unexpected ending. I was right the first time but nevertheless, it was still a great presentation of the story. I'd like to believe that it was all caught in the Mackenzie's security tape. Although, if it was, I would have thought that the police had viewed them all before interrogating Charles. So maybe it wasn't on tape. Hmm...
Kudos to Twist Literary for an amazing job at editing this series.
When I was approached the read this series, I immediately jumped right on. It had everything I want in a book and more. It has mystery, suspense, murder, lies, and cheaters.
What I adored about this book is something that I would normally complain about. It's short. Each book is about 60 pages long, but it gives you exactly what you need and more to want to read the next book. The author has carefully constructed each story from each point of view to give away just the right amount of clues to lead to the murder. Let's just say that I munched on this series fast.
I also adored that with each character point of view we learn so many secrets! My goodness I am such tell-me-your-secrets hoarder that with each gasping secret exposed it only left me hungry for more. I like that each character plays bigger roles for each other lives. My favorite pov is Palmer. Her life had so much secrets I could not stop turning the pages.
There were several love interest and one that leads to a deadly end. Will I tell you? NO! But I will say that it is indeed juicy! Hmmmmm...
Ablibi is an overflowing page turner that you must read! With each new book short and sweet, the reader is left with no choice but to read on. Exciting and mysterious, Alibi is my new type of read!
Four stars: A wicked fun read that blends a four part story into one twisty read!
Abby is dead, but who murdered her? Four different teenagers are caught in a vicious and tangled web of deceit and treachery. Who is pulling the strings? Charles, the handsome Aussie, sits in the police station dodging questions. Abby was the girlfriend of his cousin, but was she cheating with him? Is he to blame for her death? What about "Ace" Mason, the boyfriend....did he and Abby have a feud, did he find out she was stepping out on him and lose his temper? Palmer is the poor white trash girl who stands to lose everything if someone finds out that she is an illegitimate daughter. Did Abby somehow threaten to take away her dreams of the future? Finally, there is Rowan. Abby's best friend, the girl who feels jilted and stuck in the shadows is she to blame? Pick through the four different narratives and see if you can catch the killer!
What I Liked: *I jumped at the chance to review this because I was fascinated with the concept. Four different authors writing four view points for the same events and cohesively putting them together in one book. I couldn't wait to dig in and see how well it executed, and needless to say, I was not disappointed. I loved reading the different angles and learning the motives of each character. I also enjoyed each unique voice. I was delighted to see how well this all pieced together. If you are looking for something that is refreshingly original give this one a try. *I was thrilled to find that this book was full of twists and turns and it kept me guessing up until the very end. Who killed Abby? There are so many riveting developments and jaw dropping revelations. A wicked good read! It was fun to see how thick the web tangled around the four players and how they all interconnected with one another. I kept changing my mind on who the killer was and I couldn't decide who the villain was, either. This one will keep you on your toes. *I enjoyed all the perspectives. Charles was probably my favorite, the gorgeous Aussie boy who made a big mistake and now must spend his senior year in the U.S. He is a pretty boy who is used to getting his way with the girls, but he is also smart, athletic and for the most part a good guy. Ace, is a bit of a mess and it was interesting to see how is insecurities and jealousies led him down a self-destructive path. Palmer is also a fascinating character in that she has had a tough life and fought for everything but still is looked down upon. She is a nice girl in a bad spot. Rowan, Wow! Is she ever a head trip, I won't say more you must read about her yourself. *Normally, I hate love triangles, and this book has a love square, but I actually enjoyed it. I liked that all the characters were intimately tangled together and was surprised to see who was hooking up. I think the reason that I liked it was because it was a big hot mess of deceit, lies, manipulation and more!
And the Not So Much: *My biggest complaint was the ending! All the riveting pieces were dropping into place and light was being shed on all the events, and then we get to the moment of the murder and BAM! It just ends. I wanted the aftermath! What happened to Ace and Charles? I seriously looked to make sure I really hit the end. It isn't a cliffhanger, all the answers are there as far as the murder is concerned, but it is extremely abrupt. A shocker! *The only problem I had with merging the four stories and replaying the same events, was that you were reading the same scenes a couple of time from different angles. So it was a little boring reading the exact same conversation, I admit I skimmed this replays a bit. This isn't a big deal, but just know there is a bit of repetition. *I wanted more resolution. Each of the four parts ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I thought that I would get the final bits of information at the end and learn each character's fate, but alas, it does not happen. I checked to see if there would be another installment, but didn't see a sequel. *This is definitely a book for older readers, I would even classify it as a New Adult book. There are scenes with drugs, and sex and the topic is something best suited for more mature readers.
ALIBI was one of the most unique and entertaining reads I have encountered this year. It was something original and different. This is a four part story blended into one thrilling read. Oh how tangled the plot becomes as you try to determine who killed Abby! This is a fun, wicked read and I really enjoyed it! I will most definitely be on the lookout for more of this type of book! Favorite Quotations: "Boredom was a dangerous thing---it could make you blind." "It was a desire of mutual need, of two people seeking in each other what they couldn't get from the ones they actually wanted to be with." "Coffee is the glue that holds my life together." "I like seeing you far more than I dislike seeing him." "He splashed on a bit of cologne, sniffed himself and smelled guilt, then doused himself with the rest of the bottle." "Then, Charles had clearly been a jerk to Abby but since then, he'd started watching her like a pimp watches his ho." "Typical Abby. She could probably hold a quarter between her butt cheeks all day and it would never fall out; she was that uptight." "She dropped her hands to her sides with a resigned look on her face, as if accepting that tonight she would graciously step aside and let the understudy play the role of the pretty girl." "Rowan stared; every second their kiss lasted added another gallon of gas on the fire of her hate."
I received a copy of this book as part of a promotional tour. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions expressed are my own. Posted@ Rainy Day Ramblings.
At a Glance The first time I heard about this series--about each book (short story) having a different POV of four characters, learning about their stories and how they all connect and lead to a murder--I was intrigued. And it only got better once I started reading, even if the ending left me a little unsatisfied.
The Good Who Killed Abby Shelton... I was blown away by this series. The intrigue, the lies, the betrayal. All of it simmered then exploded into one suspenseful read. With each character's point of view, we learn more about the horrid story that lead to Abby Shelton's death. You couldn't even imagine what these teens have been up to.
The Suspects... We start out with Charles, the hot athlete from Australia who is trying to forget his past and find a place in his new surroundings. I immediately loved him. He was manipulative and cocky but also endearing and sensitive. Then we meet Palmer. The loose girl with a big heart that she keeps hidden. Her secrets are heavy burdens that threaten to tear apart her love for Charles. Mason, cousin to Charles and boyfriend to Abby, has been having a hard time ever since his cousin came and stole the limelight away from him. Mason has major issues and does not deal with them well. Then there is Rowan. She gives me the creeps. A supposed best friend to Abby, Rowan finds herself tangled in the destructive web she has weaved herself. All of them have a reason to want Abby dead. But who actually delivered the blow?
A Path to Murder... All of these characters are so different, but they have common threads that lead them down a path of murder. They have motives and convictions that make sense in their heads, but look juvenile on paper. Some are more innocent than others, but all had a part to play in Abby's death, even if only one actually did the deed. Even Abby, who we learn more about through the other four POVs, is an interesting and not-so-innocent character. I would have liked to seen her story as well. She tries so hard to be perfect but something dark lurks behind those eyes.
Deadly Game... This series is a real page-turner. With every story, I was sucked further into the slow devastation of each teen's lives as they all played a part in a game they had no idea they were the stars of. Some just want love, acceptance, while others want to manipulate and destroy. I only wish there was more to read.
Thrill Ride... The writing was very well done. I could feel the suspense as it gave me chills, and the revelations of each character's life was extra juicy. I felt both sympathy and disdain for each character as they hit ethical highs and lows in such a short span of time. This was a very well done mystery that took me for a thrilling ride I will never forget.
The Bad I figured out who killed Abby by the second book. I was hoping to be more surprised in that aspect.
I felt like their was no ending to this book. Sure, we figure out who did it, but there were a lot of questions left unanswered that made me knock off half a star. I don't like being left hanging to that much of an extent.
The Snuggly This series has many sexual situations. It may be YA but it's on the verge of adult. It doesn't go into much detail, but you definitely get the idea of what's going on.
Romance wise, it's all mixed up. Love is not something these kids know. They understand lust, power, greed, and infatuation, but not love. I still enjoyed all the little romances and hook-ups going on throughout the novel. Very scandalous.
Overall I wont deny that the ending made me a little mad, and I took it out on the overall rating. But I really did enjoy reading this series. It held my interest and each character fascinated me. Finding out how each person intertwined and what part they played in the death of Abby was a great experience. Recommended for pretty much everyone.
Excerpt "Yeah," Mason said, skewering the tomato and chomping into it. "I'm up to two fifty-five."
"Charles, what do you bench?” Abby asked.
“Three hundred,” Charles said quietly, shooting a glance at Mason, who reddened.
“Abby, you look amazing tonight, by the way. That color is really fit on you.”
Rowan practically tipped the table over she stood up so fast. He had almost forgotten she was there. He felt sorry for her, but it was for the best that she see the reality of the situation.
“I’ve got to…” she said stupidly, then stalked away.
“Oh, man, Charles. What’s with your girlfriend?” Mason snorted, little flecks of dressing flying from his mouth, like it was the funniest thing anyone had ever said.
“That’s very clever, Mason,” Charles said calmly.
What he really wanted was to grab him across the table and punch his front teeth down his throat. But then he would be as big a wanker as his cousin.
The ALIBI series is a series of novellas. The four parts of this book are titled after the character the story centers around: Charles, Palmer, Mason and Rowan. Each story is written by a different author. When I was first asked to review this, I was a bit nervous. I have never read a series like this. Different authors made me wary. My doubts were unjust. I ended up sincerely enjoying this story. And being sad when I had finished. This series was legitimately crazy. It was a heck of a ride that will leave you desperate for more! I couldn't put the book down once I started it. ALIBI is full of twists and turns that hit you before you see them coming!
Each of these characters play a huge role in the deceased's life. Reading from each point-of-view gives you more insight into Abby's life and into these young men and women's lives. Throughout the book, I was struck by the intensity. I couldn't believe half the things that went down because the way these people live is so shocking!
First up, Charles. Charles point-of-view is written by Annie Miles. She begins the series excellently. Charles's perspective was intriguing. Once I finished, I was confused as hell and didn't know what was true or what was a lie. It drove me crazy to put the book down for the night. Charles's book was so good. It had everything a good mystery needs: intensity, lies, scandal and romance. Charles isn't an innocent guy, but I found myself falling for him and his charm. He's had a rough life, and the reader can't help but feel bad for him. I thought I liked Abby when I began this, but no. No, I totally changed my mind through it.
Book two was about Palmer. My first thought was that the series was getting crazier and crazier! It drove me to the brink of insanity! I really liked Palmer. I felt that she was the most innocent of all of the characters. I really loved Palmer's strength. She wasn't perfect, but she was doing her hardest to get there. She wanted to be more than what people expected of her. I felt horrible for Palmer. She may have had the toughest life of them all. And a lot happens to her, not only in this book, but in the entire series. The author of this story, Isabel Eckersley, ties it in very well to the first part.
Mason's story is the third volume in this series. The author is John Byrne. In the beginning, I really didn't like Mason "Ace." He seemed like your typical rich guy. Reading for his point-of-view changed that. I saw him in a completely different light once I finished his story. He was just another piece in a game. He was used by everyone and I couldn't help, but want to hug him. He may have been a jerk sometimes, but you come to realize that he's just a human. He's trying to live up to the standards that others have placed upon him. He really wasn't a bad guy and I loved reading his story.
Rowan… what to say about Rowan. I hate her. I hated her from the first story. She's completely psychotic. She reminded me very much of a mad scientist. Everything she thinks, every action she partakes in is all as an experiment. Rowan's perspective is written by Sorrel Provola. The author pulls of the bitter, angry girl so well. I've never read a character like Rowan. A character that I completely hated on sight, even in her own story.
The major twist in this story was not immediately obvious to me, but as the story continued, my suspicions grew. It was nice to not know one-hundred percent who the real killer was. The mystery in the novel was wonderful and kept my interest until the very end. I'm so disappointed that it ended where it did, because it ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger. I want to know what happens to the characters after ALIBI is finished!
My only complaint is that there were a few descriptions that don't match up for the others. Each story seemed to have a bit of a different idea of the characteristics of the characters. Maybe it was just eat character's perception? I'm not sure, but that and a few other minor issues with set-up of the ebook. There were placement problems and some strange font issues. Other than that, I really loved this series.
I can't wait to see what these authors and Twist Literary will produce next! I'm sure we won't be disappointed!
When I read the synopsis of this book I was immediately intrigued. It is different that anything I have read before and my curiosity was definitely peaked. As it says in the synopsis, this is a combination of four novellas, written by four different authors. After Abigail Shelton is found dead in the pool at her boyfriend's house, every one is that was there is a suspect, but does everyone have an alibi? Each novella is told from the perspective of the character it is named for, and involves the weeks prior to the murder, as well as the night of the murder, giving the reader insight into finding out just who killed Abby.
Charles: The first novella is entitled Charles, and is told from his perspective. Charles is the McKenzie's nephew, Mason's cousin from Australia. He is living with them while finishing his senior year and attending school in the states. He is absolutely mouthwatering......he's hot, has an accent, he's built, is football and lacrosse star, and is also charming and quite the lady's man. I automatically fell in love with Charles, though he could be a jerk once in a while, he was really a pretty good guy and I was convinced as he told his story, that there was no way he could have killed Abigail, but then again, could he? He does have some pretty serious secrets of his own, and his love interests, well he aims to please.....all of them.
Palmer: Palmer is tall, beautiful, smart, and has had to work for everything she has. Her mother works as a waitress. Palmer also pulls double shifts to save for college, determined that she is not going to turn out like her mom. She also has a bit of a bad reputation around school, though I am not sure if all of that is entirely true. There is undeniable chemistry going on between Charles and Palmer, but Palmer has also had her eye on Mason/Ace, but why, and the answer may not be what everyone assumes. Palmer has a few really huge secrets of her own. The question is, is her alibi solid?
Mason aka Ace: Mason is Abby's boyfriend. They were best friend's for years, and then started dating, but have started growing apart lately. He's always felt smothered by Abby, and then when Charles came along, stealing the spotlight from him, his anger really flared up. He gets involved in some things he shouldn't and gets involved with someone he shouldn't. I really felt kind of sorry for Ace. He makes some really poor choices, yet has been pretty manipulated his whole life also. When everything comes to a head, will it be more than Ace can bear?
Rowan: Rowan is kind of homely, tall, thin, sharp features, a nerd, very intelligent, deceitful, manipulative, and kind of a psycho. Rowan is Abby's best friend, or so she seems. She also manages to wind herself into the lives of Charles, Ace, and Palmer. As Rowan tells her story, you see how she has weaved her web, and begin to somewhat understand her kind of warped reasoning as to why she does the things she does. Evil as she may be, the question that must be determined is if she really could have killed Abby, and did she have the opportunity to do so?
The four authors who wrote each of these novellas have done an outstanding job in bringing this story together, intertwining the lives of these four characters and the events that take place beautifully. I really enjoyed reading about the events that took from each character's perspective. Each character was really well developed and you felt like you were able to get into each one's mind, and really get to know them. It also felt like you were actually a part of trying to solve the mystery of who killed Abigail Shelton. I couldn't help but thing of the board game Clue, you know, Ms. Plum did it in the library with the candlestick, only this is a lot more intense and a lot more fun. If you are looking for something different, then I suggest you check this book out. I am really glad I did. Alibi is filled with mystery, suspense, romance, and action from beginning to end and I really enjoyed it.
This series is so OH MY GOD. There is no other way to describe this absolutely amazing four part series that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end!
I loved the concept of the perspectives of four people in this mini-series taking you in all sorts of directions until finally, you figured out how Abigail Shelton, who seemed like the girl who had it all ended up drugged, bleeding and dead; floating face down in her boyfriend, the governor's son's pool at the night of the governor's fundraiser.
Marketed as Gossip Girl meets Pretty Little Liars, this series is filled with characters with the most outrageous and drama-filled lives. I wouldn't want to live their lives but it was exciting to read about them. I loved how the ALIBIseries involved having to wade through almost every scandal I've read about in Young Adult fiction/TV to arrive at a conclusion that was startling yet satisfying. It wasn't the who but the how that made this whodunnit a thrilling read!
Volume I: Charles by Annie Miles definitely helped set the stage! I was immediately drawn to Charles, Mason (the governor's son)'s cousin from Australia. Charles was charming, almost too charming and his version of the events leading to Abby being found floating face down in the pool are the first glimpse we get into the lives of these characters. Charles was probably the first to sense that there was so much more to Abby than what people saw and even at the end of all the four parts, I was convinced we didn't know everything about her.
Volume II: Palmer by Isabel Eckersley was my favourite part of the series. This was mainly because Palmer was one of the few characters I could sympathise with. Palmer is the girl Charles falls for which, in a way, triggers everything and it was great knowing more about her. I didn't like her in Charles, but in Palmer, I felt myself mentally cheering for her to emerge victorious in the grand scheme of things.
Volume III: Mason by John Byrne cemented my opinion of Mason. In the earlier parts, he seemed vengeful and insanely jealous of Charles who seemed to have taken everything that was Mason's from when he'd arrived. But by the end of Mason, it's clear that he was more of a pawn in someone else's game. That made me feel sorry for him.
Volume IV: Rowan by Sorrel Provola... oh my god, Rowan. I hated this girl. I hated her in the other volumes and hated her even more when we were shown the events from her perspective. I got to know so much more about the other characters while seeing the events through Rowan's eyes. For one thing, there were parts conveniently omitted by one of the characters in the initial parts and Rowan's perspective made me get the full picture about this person.
This was such a great series! I loved that the four characters were portrayed so thoroughly by four different authors and it all added up perfectly. By each author taking on the perspective of one character, I guess it also gave each character a truly distinct voice... When I read books with multiple perspectives, I sometimes find that it's difficult to distinguish between the perspectives but that was never a problem with this series.
I loved the way the mystery was unraveled: piece by piece. The governor's fundraiser was definitely a night of drama and revelations as Charles, Palmer, Mason, Rowan and Abby revealed things about themselves or others around them that were earth shattering. The ALIBI series from Twist Literary was sheer genius and had me reading into the early morning hours!
This was the kind of book I've been looking for the past few months. It's a YA contemporary, but I'd say definitely on the upper end of YA as there is a lot of sexually explicit scenes. That being said, they fit in with what was going on and I didn't think they were overdone or too graphic. Just a warning before you let your 13 yr old read it.
The first book, Charles opens with him being questioned in the police station. We aren't sure why he's the main suspect. But we learn all about what he's been doing through his confession to the police. What he does and does not say. But Charles doesn't know everything. He thinks he's the only one with things to hide, like juggling several girls at once and having a relationship with his cousin's girlfriend.
On to Palmer. She's poor, but smart and she wants a ticket out of Spring Valley. She's gorgeous, but has a reputation and has the biggest secret that could blow the Governor's campaign to smithereens if she reveals it, but it also means she's got the most to lose. She's holding out on Charles, while she seems to be chasing after Mason. A fight with Abby, Abby who planned the whole event for the Governor's campaign that night is not out of the question.
On to Ace, or Mason. We don't know how he got the nickname but he doesn't seem like an Ace at anything. He seems oblivious to what's right under his nose, but we learn what we see isn't what we get with him. His relationship with Abby isn't exactly what he desires and what better way to get rid of her for good?
And finally Rowan. Mousy, stand behind everyone and watch things happen Rowan. She's Abby's best friend, but they really have nothing in common. Only once do they go anywhere or do anything without a boy with them and still it's to meet up with the boys. She's very smart, computer whiz, mechanical whiz and she knows how people act. She learns by watching and knows a lot more than she lets on.
So, what happens? I thought I wasn't going to learn who killed Abby, but I did and man, cold hearted. But the other things I learned about the characters that they themselves revealed about themselves and the others was really interesting. Take Charles, I thought I knew everything about him when he was remembering all his time in the past three months before Abby's death, but he forgot to mention a lot! So we get it from someone else's story. And when something happens in one story that is left unfinished, it gets finished in another story so nothing is left hanging.
One problem, Palmer's story has her and Charles meeting before school starts for the year. Rowan's story has them meeting after school starts for the year. That was the only inconsistency I found which is pretty good considering four different authors wrote the books. And the other thing I would have liked was to see how things worked out after everything was figured out. Maybe a little epilogue. There was a romance I was really interested in and I'd liked to have seen if justice got served.
The character developments are great because you get to see how they see themselves as well as how the other characters see them. You see them in their element and outside their comfort zones and how they handle those situations. You see their motivations, but it still doesn't give you a clue as to who did what until the author wants you to know. Any of them could have done it. All of them had reason to do it. Abby herself could have done it. You just don't know. Lots of lies, two faced people, back stabbing, manipulation, it was fantastic. Twist literary has another series getting ready to start and I'm putting it on my TBR! I highly recommend this series!!
I enjoyed Alibi. It's fast paced twists and turns kept you guessing. As the plot unfolds, you find each friend played a part that resulted in the death of Abigail Shelton. I liked reading each persons perspective. I did read all of the volumes consecutively and by the third volume I was a little tired of some of the places in the story that crossed over. I believe originally this story was published one volume at a time so the repetitiveness was necessary but I found it hard not to skim through. Overall it was a really good read with an ending that I really didn't see coming.
Abby Shelton was found floating in the Mackenzie's family pool bleeding, her hands tied behind her back and drugs and alcohol in her system, as well as a rumored pregnancy. The story of her death plays out at the Mackenzie family home, the wealthy and affluent family members are now at the heart of the police investigation.
Alibi opens in the police interrogation room. Abby's friends, each with their own secrets, are all present the night of her death. You first meet Charles who is the Australian cousin to the Mackenzie family. He has a violent dark secret that he is hoping to hide. Charles, who found and pulled her lifeless body from the pool, is being question in Abby's death. In Volume I as his story unfolds the dialogue follows not only the things that he tells the police, but his thoughts of all the many things that could possibly implicate him. You are also introduced to the principle players and possible suspects. Palmer, the beautiful but manipulative girl trying to use her looks and body to escape her shameful past. Mason (Ace) Mackenzie, the golden boy who has everything you need to succeed in high school; money, good looks and the most popular girl(Abby) is his girlfriend. Finally, you meet Rowan. She is Abby's best friend but could her jealousy and insecurities lead her to betray her friendship?
Volume II is Palmer's version of the same time period leading up to Abby's death. Palmer finds out that she is a product of an affair between her mother(the Mackenzie's maid) and William Mackenzie (Ace's dad). She tries reaching out to Ace to share her paternity secret only to be rejected by him over and over again. But others have found out her secret and are not above using the information to strike out at perceived rivals and enemies.
Volume III follows Mason's (Ace) point of view. Since the arrival of his cousin Charles, Ace feels his life unraveling. The two compete for everything from starting positions on the high school football team to Abby's heart. But as Ace turns to steroid drug use in hope of an edge on the football field, the side effects have him lashing out at Abby and pushing her into Charles' waiting arms. Palmers revelations regarding her and Ace's shared paternity highlight the lies his family struggles to hide. Did a steroid induced rage lead to Abby's death?
Volume IV is Rowan story. Abby's best friend is not what she seems. Unrequited love causes Rowan to create havoc in the lives of those around her as she undermines everyone while looks for retribution hook ups with both Charles and Ace behind Abby's back. Could she be guilty of the ultimate betrayal?
Alibi Volumes I-IV is a collection of four one hundred page novellas, that each delivers the POV of a suspect. Written by four different authors this murder mystery offers a refreshing and unique twist. I was captivated from page one of the first book and became immersed in the characters. The synopsis states that each has an alibi and no one is innocent. I found this to be delightfully true and consumed this in a single evening.
The tale begins after the death of Abigail Shelton at the police station. Through flashbacks each of the suspects takes us through the weeks leading up to and including the night of the murder. Twists, sub-plots and flawed characters makes this an exciting read. Since, I do not want to spoil the tale for you; I will treat this as a single book. In the novellas we meet each suspect and read their POV regarding the events that occurred. They are all flawed and the interrelationships between them all were complicated and crazy! All of them have reasons to feel guilty and were up to no good; but only one of them committed the crime. Discovering their secrets, motives and fears was an awesome experience.
The players; Charlie is an Australian who is in the states to try to get a football scholarship. He is smooth with the ladies and juggling a few secret relationships. He is residing with his cousin, Ace. Did I mention he has a secret as to why he left his homeland for his senior year of high school? Palmer is an overachiever, a bastard and the daughter of a maid. She juggles school and a job to help her mother keep their home. She discovers who her father is and that changes everything. Ace is the spoiled, gifted son of a politician and executive. He lacks self confidence and feels like things are falling apart. He was Abigail’s boyfriend. Rowan is Abigail’s best friend and nerd of the group. She can be manipulative and often feels invisible. Abigail our victim can be sweet, demanding, and at times cruel. I cannot say I was particularly fond of any of them but I was intrigued.
The world-building in this collection was fascinating and refreshingly unique. I am amazed at how these four authors collaborated to make these different POV’s flow together into a tight, well written, suspenseful murder mystery. Each of the characters was well fleshed out and I believed each tale that unfolded. As I read each POV my opinion of whom the murderer was changed and I was delighted by the experience. My favorite novella of the group was Rowan.
I highly recommend Alibi Volumes I-IV to fans of murder mysteries, different POV’s and strong, flawed characters. I applaud the authors and Twisted Literary for putting together this intriguing read. I will be on the lookout for more exciting things from them.
I want to thank Twisted Literary for providing this ARC in exchange for my unbiased review.
This, and other reviews can be found on my blog Just a Lil Lost
Abby is found dead, face down in a pool and all those around her are the suspects. From her boyfriend to her best friend, her rival to her secret lover – all of them had reason to want her dead and all of them are on the detective’s radar. Told in a 4-part story, each segment is from the point of view of each of the suspects.
Touted as a perfect read for fans of Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, Alibi certainly lives up to that statement – and then some. Full of steamy lust, deceit and lies, the relationships of these characters converge and dissipate at a moment’s notice. Beginning with Charles’ story, each of the subsequent tales adds to or corrects the established narrative. While understandably that this is a collection of all 4 volumes, I felt it got a bit repetitive. Some conversations and scenes played out almost in full on several accounts where I felt it could have been acknowledged and perhaps moved along – although I do understand the point to establish the same moment in time to link the stories.
I also personally felt it a bit confusing at times with the jump in months that established time in the story. “End of August” or “End of October” didn’t really stand out to me in terms of what was going on with each character at that time. It’s not until I read a bit further into those sections that I remembered what was going on. There were some moments that were occurring in the present, and then flashbacked to recall their stories but at times it didn’t feel completely clear that was happening.
That being said, I am absolutely enthralled and amazed with how well these four volumes meshed together in such a cohesive way given that there were 4 authors – one to each part. I’d be curious to find out the writing process… whether they each took turns in a row to add to an established plot with their own character’s voice, or if they all sat down together to decide on the direction of where it would go beforehand, and then build off of it. A fantastically woven murder mystery that leaves you wondering who killed Abby, while adding a lot of red herrings or diversions along the way. All loose ends are cleverly explained and tied up, and just when I thought they had forgotten to answer one particular moment from the first volume, there it comes at the end. Very very well plotted out. I actually thought I had it all figured out by the 2nd volume at one point and was – thankfully – wrong as I would hate for the story to have cheapened out with that route.
The story is available in separated parts, but that just seems redundant to me. For a fairly quick read, you need to consume all 4 parts together to find out the full story of what happened to Abby Shelton.
I totally didn't really think this book would be my thing. When you put the words "Gossip Girl" and "Pretty Little Liars" in the blurb, those who have a disdain for those things, aka. me, immediately turn away. But I admit, I really wanted to see if I could solve a murder. It wasn't like this series would drag along like Pretty Little Liars does (it's on like its 12th book by now?). Guess you can now call me a detective geek because I enjoyed reading Alibi and definitely need to read more like it.
Alibi is the culmination of four suspects of Abby's murders and the stories behind their possible motives. Each point of view of one of the four narrators gave a light to what was going on behind the scenes of Abby and those around her. Let's just say that it's totally whacked up. We are presented Charles, the hot Australian who becomes Abby's secret boyfriend, Palmer, the slut who envies Abby, Mason, aka "Ace," Abby's boyfriend and Charles' cousin, and not to mention Rowan, Abby's backstabbing BFF. I wouldn't say that there was anything special about Abby's murder. No twist or any unique features, but boy, how much fun I had reading it cannot be put into words.
I'm kind of afraid now that I have some crazy obsession with finding people's secrets now. While I was reading Alibi, I was so pumped up on digging into the dirt of these teenagers' lives, instead of the main focus, who killed Abby. Maybe it was because I already had a hunch 50 page in (that was totally spot on), but still the dirt made it so worth it. All of these characters all had their own secrets. Not a single one was a spotless lamb; the grim covering them was mostly based around Abby, making the secrets unveiled really put the pace and made the plot thrilling. Although this made the plot extremely exciting, it also made the characters extremely hard to like because they were all so screwed up.
All together, Alibi is a fast-paced mystery that will keep the readers on their toes as they flip through the pages rapidly, just dying to solve the mystery of Abby's murder. However, the ending is a major disappointment. After all of the tension and dark secrets, one would expect a satisfying crunch to end this mystery. Unfortunately, the ending falls flat, as if a roller coaster suddenly stops halfway down the highest hill. Regardless, Alibi is still a read that will be impossible to put down until the final page. There is an addictive quality that cannot be repressed and will hold you for the ride till the end.
I won't lie, I was kind of stalking Twist Literary (only online people, I wasn't like in their bushes or anything) once I heard about them a few months back. The whole concept of a series written by different authors for different characters is seriously intriguing. I kind of thought I'd be able to tell when someone else was writing, but the authors do it so seamlessly that there's really no difference. What definitely helped is the amazing characterization throughout the story. Every character has their own distinct personality that pulls you in right away.
Charles. You sir, are weirdly lovable even though I feel like I should stay away because you will break my heart with that beautiful Aussie accent of yours and leave me drowning my sorrows in chocolate. Every time Charles would talk, I would feel this necessity to say his lines in an Australian accent. Let me tell you, I realized my Aussie accent sucks! However, don't let my awful accent deter you from reading all about him and wanting his bod. Annie Miles writes Charles in a way that makes you want to discover the layers under his teen bravado and charm.
I think I have a slight girl crush on Palmer because she has that confidence that just makes you want to know her. Even if I kind of hated her at times, I still rooted for her in the story. I totally understand why she intrigued so many people. Isabel Eckersley gives Palmer this charismatic air about her that makes a reader even notice there's something about her without seeing her. Her plot twists are also the most interesting for me; I truly didn't see them coming.
Mason and Rowan are the two characters that I'm still unsure about my feelings for. Every story like this needs an edgy boy or girl, and these two seem to be it. Byrne and Provolo make their stories like those MTV shows you don't want to admit you watch, but honestly love every minute of because they're such a huge train wreck. Yeah. I mean...I don't watch those shows.*Looks anywhere but at you*
With little bits of story leaking out through each of the characters, Alibi will tease and keep you reading to the very end. I was sad to have it end because I got so invested and wanted more. If you're looking for a mystery that is sure to stay with you even after you're done turning the pages, Alibi is a definite not-so-guilty pleasure.

4 stars - Brilliantly explaining why the truth lies somewhere in the middle
Yeah so I wasn't sure about this one because it seemed outside my normal genres but really I have to give kudos to the authors for peeking my curiosity with their request to review their book. They actually read my review police and provided everything I requested. So I gave their book a chance and I'm certainly glad I did.
The book is divided into four sections, about 100 pages each, one from each of the four characters surrounding the girl who is found dead at the beginning of the book. I was surprised how fast those pages flew by. Now I can read fast but when I'm really STUCK in a book, yeah well that's what happened here. I read the first two sections in a couple hours. I forced myself to put it down to go to sleep only to not be able to. My mind keep racing through the possibilities. The book got finished the next day.
I liked the characters. They were strong, full developed characters that I cared about. When I was reading Charles' section, I was certain he was 100% innocent. Then as I read Palmer's section I was thinking well maybe Charles didn't see how he contributed. And on and on it went. Each character going through different aspects of the weeks leading up to Abby's death. Some overlapping but always emphasizing different things. Amazingly, it was like real life. So many times we think we understand the truth but we are missing some detail or we are only focused on ourselves and we miss reality. It was like four different people staring out at the grand canyon. Each seeing just a little bit different scene. Each focused on the thoughts in their own head. Each somewhat aware that the others are involved. But each missing something that's important to one of the others. Really this book brilliantly explains why the truth always lies somewhere in the middle.
Mystery isn't my normal thing, but I really enjoyed this book. The mystery was expertly woven among a rich contemporary storyline that had the pages flying. It had some interesting romance going on with some subplots on social structures. While the story revisited some things, the details were always increased. I was never bored with that. I was pretty sure I knew who actually killed Abby as I approached the end and I was right but as the book suggests no one was innocent. At first, the ending seemed strange but as I sat thinking about it after I'd finished, I realized it was the perfect ending.
Not sure if this book will drive me to read more mystery but I will say this, it is a fabulous YA read and you should check it out.
The cover is so beautiful. You get to see what the characters really look like. I devoured this book in one sitting. This book is such a page turner!
The Alibi series consists of 4 books, wherein the four primary suspects have their own POV’s regarding the events before and after the death of Abby. As you read, you’ll only have one question in mind. Who killed Abigail Shelton?
The series started with Charles, our hot Australian who went to live in Spring Valley to run away from his dark past. Next is Palmer, our sexy, intelligent girl whose goal is to get a scholarship for her future. We have Mason “Ace” for the 3rd book, Abby’s boyfriend who’s trying his best not to be overshadowed by his Australian cousin, and lastly is Rowan, Abby’s best friend who has dark secrets of her own. The characters are so diverse, each of them is unique.
Alibi was addicting and an absolute page-turner. Once I started reading the first book, I couldn’t put it down until the last one. I really enjoy a good murder/mystery book, and this is one of the best I’ve read in that genre so far. Each of the characters has their own voices and you can easily distinguish each of them with their unique personalities. You also get to see what really did happen in his/her own perspective.
A lot of twists were uncovered as you read, only making me more thrilled to know WHO really did kill Abby! It seemed like I myself is a detective, trying to gather all the clues that will lead to the real killer. The only thing I didn’t liked about this was I wasn’t satisfied with the ending.
Overall, this book is a must read for mystery lovers.
The four additions in the Alibi series (Charles, Palmer, Mason, and Rowan) have been sitting on my eReader for ages now, and I'm not really sure why. They looked like fun and scandalous reads. Plus I loved the way Twist Literary was packaging them as individual novellas featuring one of four point-of-views. Anyhow, I recently decided to give it a try, and I ended up enjoying what I saw. They weren't perfect, but they were still fun and twisted reads that had me hooked from the get-go.
The four novellas in the Alibi series welcomes the reader into the world of Charles, Palmer, Mason and Rowan, four teens facing the consequences after one of their own, Abby Shelton, is found dead in a pool. All four teens have had their own twisted pasts with Abby: one was her boyfriend, the other was her secret boyfriend, another was her best friend, and one was the girl who envied her from far. However, while they all live very different lives, they're all suspects in the investigation, but who exactly killed Abby? Only time and more pages will tell in this fast paced and scandalous read that while have any reader flipping the pages, dying to know what happens next!
The best part of Alibi is, without out doubt, the central mystery involving the death of Abby. Every volume offered a new twist to the story, and kept me fully interested as the reader. I was constantly questioning who killed Abby and lining up all the possibilities in my head. Each and every one was pretty guilty, in my opinion, but the end revelation really managed to shock me. I also enjoyed the other little mysteries that popped up throughout, because it really manged to keep the story moving.
While I did enjoy the story line, I wasn't the biggest fans of the characters. None of them were exactly likable nor that sweet, and I couldn't believe just how twisted some of them were. However, each brought a lot of scandal to the table, which made me overlook the lack of connection I was able to make with them.
Lastly, the writing was good. Each volume features a new writer, but they managed to flow perfectly together...Plus I just loved seeing the scenes from multiple POVS, as each offered a new, interesting look to the story. It was just a really fun way to deliver the story overall.
In all, Alibi Volumes I-IV were fun and exciting reads, and I can't wait to see what Twist Literary has up next!
High school senior Abby is dead, and her circle of four people are the only ones who know what happened. Through a series of four novellas, the events leading up to Abby's demise are told. The lives of Charles, Palmer, Mason, and Rowan are tied together now...and the consequences are deadly.
This book definitely gets credit for originality--the story slowly unfolds through the eyes of four different people. But unfortunately, I was disappointed by the execution of storytelling.
No one is as they seem in this novel, and no one is completely innocent. I actually can't say I truly liked any of the characters--though I suppose Charles is the least annoying. Palmer is driven, but goes about accomplishing things in the wrong way. Mason, or Ace, is a thickheaded jock who can't see what's going on right in front of him. Abby is a scheming bitch, and Rowan is just grade-A crazy.
Because the same events were told from different points of view, there was a good amount of repetition. Though I did appreciate getting each character's take on why they did what they did, this became laborious when I got to the third section.
Without giving anything away, I will say that what turned me off most about this book was how annoyingly stupid these characters were. Senseless decisions abounded, and the reasoning behind some of their actions was just ridiculous.
I definitely had tons of questions by the time I got to the end. Basically, Rowan's story made an already shaky novel just completely fall apart for me. There were things that she says happened that other characters never mention, which made me wonder if she was hallucinating. And other, just simple things didn't make sense to me.
In the end, too much just didn't add up for me, and I was left just shaking my head at the ending. A great effort at being unique, but this book was ultimately unsuccessful.
This book is full of drugs, sex, and lies, and these teenagers inhabit a world that sometimes only seems to exist in movies. Everyone is rich and glamorous and could have anything they want. It's a little hard to believe that these kids are all only supposed to be 17 or so, which is always the biggest hurdle I have in reading books like this.
I really liked the idea of seeing the story take place from each character's viewpoint. Although it got repetitive to read the same conversation multiple times, you still could glean something new each time. But for that reason, I'd probably recommend reading the stories over a longer period of time rather than all in a row like I did, so that you have a little distance between each story.
Each character leaves something out, to protect themselves or to protect someone else involved, so you really need to read all four stories to get a complete picture of what happened that night -- and even then, I was still left with a whole lot of questions! I did find myself trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together as I read, because you clue in very quickly to the fact that not all is as it seems. Each of the characters has a pretty good reason to want Abby dead.
I did feel like the ending was very abrupt, like some other readers have mentioned, and the ending mostly left me wanting to know what happened next. It resolved the question of "who killed Abby Shelton" but raised a whole bunch more instead! I also had some problems with the characterizations of Parker and Abby, who are both talked about in harsh terms for being "loose", Parker especially, as she has a reputation of sleeping with a lot of guys. Charles and Mason aren't exactly innocent in those regards either, but no one is running around calling them derogatory names because of it. Parker and Abby both have lots of other less than great qualities that could be focused on, but instead the authors choose to focus on that and shame them for it. Yeah, it's what happens out in the "real world" too, but that doesn't mean I have to like it or be comfortable with it.
Alibi is one of those books that draws you in right from the start. The story line and the way it is told will have you at the edge of your seat waiting to read what will happen next. This story is told from a four person point of view and you get to see what the character is feeling and see through their eyes what they perceive could have happened.
Alibi is a story about a girl named Abby Shelton. She is smart, beautiful, and has everything a girl could want. She also has dark secrets and lies she keeps. She is a torment soul on the inside and when she is found dead lying in her boyfriends pool face down with her hands tied full of alcohol and drugs there is a shock that goes through everyone. No one would have expected that from her and every one that thought they knew her is devastated by her death. What they don't know is that Abby had her lies and her secrets and she definitely was not the perfect angel they thought she was.
As her death is investigated the police focus on the four main people who were around her. There is Charles the athlete from Australia. He has come here to America to start a new life. He has secrets and lies he keeps but his past just might destroy him. Then you have Palmer who is in love with Charles. She is a little lose with herself preferring college boys because they are more refined and have more experience. She is blown away by Charles when she meets him and instantly wants him. Then you have Mason who is Abby's boyfriend and Charles cousin. He is something else and he definitely has a lot of secrets and lies he keeps from Abby and the gang. Then we have Rowan who is Abby's best friend. She is not what she seems and soon everyone will find out just how conniving and cunning Rowan can be.
So the question still remains who killed Abby and why? Well you have to read this series to get all the juice and know how and uncover all the secrets and lies to figure out who killed her. I was surprised when I found out because I actually thought it was someone else.
4.6/5 When I read the synopsis of ALIBI, I knew I had to read it. I found fascinating a book where each of the characters give us their POV's. Each book tells us how things are developing. It starts already with the death of our golden girl and then each of the details that lead us to how and why Abby died.
The first to tell the story is Charles, Australian boy who travels to USA to live with his uncles, fleeing a dark past. Charles is handsome, successful athlete and very nice, is the character that immediately won my heart. Then we read Palmer, a very intelligent girl of which our Charles falls in love. Then Mason, Charles cousin and Abby's boyfriend. Poor Mason, really gave me tenderness read about it, but there were also times when I could not stand him, even was very interesting to see things from him perspective. And finally we have Rowan, Abby's best friend and that definitely had something wrong in the head. As you can see, each of the characters is very different, with a distinct personality and together, lead us to know a story full of intrigue and mystery, where nothing is as it seems.
The story I liked it but it is a book you should not take to bed or the last thing that you'll think is in sleep. However, I can not help but notice that the end is inconclusive. Yes, we discover the murderer (I knew from the beginning, but that did not take away the emotion because with each chapter, things take a surprising twist), but lacked something.
In summary, Alibi tells a story that only gets more exciting with each page will keep you guessing what else will happen.

Abby has been found dead in the Mackenzie's pool. There is alcohol and drugs in her system and now the question is who killed her and why?
We have 4 suspects. Charles, who is from Australia and is quite the ladies man. He has his eyes set on Abby, who happens to be Ace's girlfriend. Ace is the spoiled son of a politician, who wants nothing but tho play football. And he will do what ever it takes to be the best no matter the cost. His attention to his girlfriend Abby is slipping. Palmer has found out who her father is and tries to reach out to a friend, but it doesn't go the way she has had it planned. Rowan is Abby's best friend. She is a manipulative and has an agenda all her own.
The world building was suspenseful and at times intense. The characters have major flaws and have a lot to loose, making it hard to figure out who to trust and not to. I wasn't sure till the very end. I though I had it figured out, but I was way off. The only issue I had with this is that the repetitiveness of the story for each new novella. But with that aside, I really enjoyed reading each of them. Learning each of the characters back stories, was fascinating and understand why they acted the way they did.
Alibi is a fast paced, and engrossing mystery that keeps you trying to figure it all out. Once you get started reading, you just don't want to stop till you do. I would say to give this a try, and see if can figure it out before the end. Overall, this was an exciting read.
ALIBI is a collection of 4 short novellas that complete a series. It revolves around the death of Abby Shelton. Each of the stories is told from a major character's point of view - in effect it is each of their alibi's for the murder. Behind the seemingly perfect life of the victim is a web of lies and deceit, woven by those closest to her. All the stories overlap and provide a backstory that leads up to the night of the murder, and will eventually answer the question of who killed Abby and why.
This is an intriguing set of short stories that intertwine to reveal a full scale tale of mystery and suspense. The characters are all told from various points of view - from first person to being observed by others around them. It makes the narrative really engaging and interesting, seeing the various layers of the characters and the lies they tell everyone. I found the plot line to be very enthralling at first, but it seemed to fizzle out as the stories went on, eventually coming to a very dull and obvious (at least to me) ending. There were definitely a ton of twists and unseen events throughout the book, which kept me on my toes. I liked how the stories were all told from varying perspectives. It made it really different from other books in the genre. This is a well written and engaging story of suspense and mystery that will have readers guessing who the killer is all while exposing the truths that people try to keep hidden.
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I was given a complimentary copy of this series in return for my honest review. Alibi: The Complete Series is a collection of four novellas written by four authors (Annie Miles, John Byrne, Isabel Eckersley, and Sorrel Provola respectively). Each novella is written from the perspective of four of the main characters (or suspects, in this case), detailing the events leading up to the murder of the seemingly perfect Abby Shelton.
Initially, I was worried that the retelling of basically the same events would get repetitive and difficult to read, but luckily that wasn't the case. Each author took the story and made it their own by adding a few new details and bringing each character into a new light. All of the characters seemed pretty innocent at first glance, but it soon became clear that no one is as they seems in this series. Each character had their own reasons for wanting Abby dead, whether it be out of jealousy or otherwise. I thought it was relatively easy to figure out who the murderer was, but there were so many twists and turns that it was still a delight to continue reading and watch the story unfold.
My only real issue with these novellas is that after Charles' version of events, the stories do seem a bit shorter and a bit more rushed. It doesn't really hurt the story though, so don't let that stop you from giving this series a try. OH! and a warning for anyone with children: This series is cataloged as YA, but there is drug use and sexually explicit content so I would only recommend it for older kids.
This was a really neat concept, and very well-executed! I was kind of leery going into Alibi, because I'm not one for short stories, and Alibi consists of four 100-page installments or volumes. Each installment is told from a different main character's perspective. But, the story flowed well, and getting a better understanding of each character was really neat. I found Alibi to be compulsively readable. During each volume, I was absolutely convinced as to who the killer was. Then, I'd start a new volume and the tables would turn again, and I'd have to start over with figuring out who killed Abigail.
I really liked the different voices of each character. I didn't realize until after I'd finished the book, that a different author wrote each volume. I think that is part of what makes each volume feel so fresh. I found it so ironic how each character came across differently from volume to volume. It's all about perspective, and that whole "in the eyes of the beholder" business.
Because Alibi consists of four volumes, many of the same events are told from different perspectives. While this really helped me to get an understanding of why people behaved the way they did, some of the retelling started to get old for me. It made me want to skim through certain parts, especially the parts that reiterated the same dialogue from before.
Overall, I enjoyed Alibi much more than I thought I would. I would definitely read a compilation like this again.
What an ingenious way to show different points of view. Each point of view a little different, actually so different from the others that you would never think that just reading one would give you the full story. Everyone is hiding something and the fun part of this is finding out whether that something is detrimental to Abby.
What I was worried about most was the ending. How were the authors going to finish this, were they going to pull this together or just let us sit and stew over the four points of view and make up our own minds on how things went. Fortunately she does clean it up so much so that I had no doubt who killed Abby although each character had some sort of reason in some way or another TO kill her.
And although the characters were great not everyone was portrayed to be a killer and some were more intense than others, Rowan being one of those. Also Ace had some serious issues that needed to be worked out! The fun of it is not knowing and trying to figure out exactly who did it! Kind of like Clue but without Tim Curry but still totally awesome!
So, my initial reaction to this mystery was a bit skeptical but I’m glad I went for it! If you too are a bit skeptical, just read it! Even if you’re not a mystery fan. It’s fun, quirky and a bit weird but totally worth every word.
