A story about a 6th grader who likes to invent things, this 4th grade reading level (at least 4th grade) was a delight to my 6 yr old who read it on his own. He loved the fun names, it was easy to read for him and engaging at the same time. He doesn't like all books and sometimes balks at length, so he almost didn't pick this one up. But I encouraged him to read just a few chapters and he was hooked. This isn't so with all books, so we'll definitely be looking up this author again!
A quick fun read. Sneeze is an inventor (or at least passionately tries) and can't wait for his summer vacation to the Invention Convention with his family. Of course things don't go as planned, but he learns whats most important, like what real friends are.
Sneeze, is a boy who is very young boy who is "revolved" around himself. The book itself though is good because when I was younger, I would have considered myself a "rebel". This book honestly made me into more of a "bad" kid, because I would disobey my parents A LOT. The book itself, like the idea of it came from this one assignment Sneeze has to do, during his summer school. If you would want to know what the book is mainly about, just read the back of the book to get a glimpse of it. Honestly in my opinion, this book is meant for 5th graders or 6th graders. I do enjoy the book because it gives me options on how to be a "bad" kid(I won't actually become one because I do not want to die lol).
I thought that this was a very good book. It had alot of humor in it so it kept me entertained throughout the whole book. The story wasn't complicated at all either so I understood everything perfectly. This book is about a boy who needs to go to summer school. And in summer school they are making a book, so he decides to make a book about how to bug your parents. The book was a big hit and he made alot of money, but there were alot of bumps along the way. Pretty much anyone will enjoy this book.
This book honestly surpassed my expectations--which were pretty low. We got it cheap somewhere and had it on our shelves, so I figured I'd try reading it to the kids for fun. It started pretty ridiculous with character names like Sneeze, Hiccup, and Scribbler (all nicknames of course) which set me up to think it was more of a "My Weird School" type of book, but it actually got better as it went along. It's more of a commentary on what books should be allowed for kids to write and read, along with some funny bits and an actual list of "101 Ways to Bug Your Parents" in the back, which of course the kids loved. It does seem a bit ridiculous that a 12-year-old secures himself a job behind his parents back and manages to sell his "book" to tens of kids, but it was still an enjoyable read overall.
Okay, here's the deal. I discovered this book as a young 12 year old in the shelves of my classroom library. I then went on to read it so many times that my teacher gifted it to me at the end of the year.
This book is weird. It's fun. It's full of memorable characters and odd happenings, with little feel good moments interspersed here and there.
Will it ever be considered a children's classic? Definitely not. Will it forever be considered one of MY childhood classics? Absolutely.
p.s. As a warning for any parents who might be reading this review, as well as an incentive for any children who are: this book does in fact include a list of 101 ways to bug your parents.
8-year old really liked this. It's about a kid inventor who is trying to figure out a way to get to the Invention Convention when his parents say they don't have money to send him. I liked that the plot addressed real life issue of parents not having money to cater to kid's every whim; I didn't like some of the snarky attitude in the beginning, but he seems to round off as a character toward the end. Cute enough and kept our attention.
Read this back in elementary school, years and years ago, but tonight something jarred a memory of it — a mild fixation obsessively compulsively writing the list in the book over and over and over. I hardly remember the actual story but the l i s t. I kept it checked out for weeks and weeks and weeks. I hid it under the stool in the living room. I like lists.
In the early pages, I disliked what appeared to be a snarky, obsessive, self-centered, & selfish young hero. And I would hate for this book to land in the hands of a child who already possesses those unfortunate characteristics. But, as the book progressed, his better character traits came to the fore.
Sneeze, our hero, is an inventor of more than a few failed inventions but he never gives up. His best friend, Hiccup, is his main supporter. Nicknames abound that the intended age group should find amusing. For months, Sneeze has been looking forward to a family vacation that would include a stop at the Invention Convention and the possibility of selling his latest invention. Epic fail. Finances are tight. The vacation gets cancelled. His parents need to work. They enroll him in a summer class with his least favorite teacher in lieu of a babysitter. Could life get any worse?
The book title comes from Sneeze's choice of topic in the summer creative writing class. He researches and tests these methods out on his parents for two obvious reasons. (Pity them!) 1- To vent his anger for canceling the vacation; and, 2- To sell the finished product to raise money to go to the convention on his own.
Okay, the kid definitely has an obnoxious side but as time and the book progress, he works hard, learns a few lessons and his better side emerges. His admirable perseverance sees him through trials and tribulations both at home, school, and work, with fellow classmates, the school system, parents, and a prickly co-worker. In the end, he acts both reasonably and honorably and becomes a hero in the true sense of the word. Not a bad finish.
Highly recommended by 9-year-old twins Jake and Brian. Funny and clever story of a sixth grade inventory (or wanna-be), who with most of his class ends up taking summer school - all for a variety of reasons, that are a big of a stretch.
Regardless, that sets the scene as students take a Creative Writing class and mysteries, suspense, and misunderstandings occur.
Hiccup is a little too extreme for me. Goldie is hilarious. Great relationship with Scribbler and Hiccup and Scribbler and Hayley. Parents are great. Adults are great. A little crazy at the end at the meeting - hard to believe that many parents would be that upset.
Golden lines: Scribbler to his newest fish: "No trip has ever meant so much before. This was my dream come true. And now...it's over...Do you know how that feels, Ben? Did you ever dream about swimming out in the ocean? Just you in miles and miles of blue...dancing with seaweed, wiggling in the sand, surfing down waves with dolphins. And then you woke up and you were still here? Still inside four glass walls, with the same dumb old turquoise gravel and empty treasure chest?" (14).
