Any ocean lover knows the transformative power of the ocean wave and its perfect confluence of energy, water, and light. Waves offers a mesmerizing collection of photography that explores the many faces of the singular ocean wave, whether it is the quiet rush of a crystalline wavelet over tropical sand or the deadly slam of storm surf against Oregon cliffs. Former editor of Surfer magazine, Steve Hawk has selected photographs from New Zealand to Newfoundland, from Fiji to the Aleutians, and paired them with insightful ruminations on the science and poetry of waves. With work from world-renowned photographers such as Art Brewer, Jeff Divine, Wayne Levin, and Joel Meyerowitz, Waves will captivate all those with a passion for the sea.
Waves was a surprising book to me as I merely expected a relaxing picture book read. Instead I'm taken away to an exciting world where water and wind meet adventure and adrenaline. The mechanics of waves is written in a way simple to understand and animals are described with magic and fun. This relaxing read was educational and mostly, just put a smile to my face.
I've been searching for a book for awhile that really explained the phenomenon of waves to a non-scientist so as to draw the ocean better. THIS IS IT!!! You really get a handle from this on what ocean water is doing. It's very exciting to read it and begin to grasp what's going on. The pictures are gorgeous and the explanation is clear. Did you know that waves aren't water--they're energy moving through water? The water itself stays in place. The wave is energy rolling through it. Ocean waves are waves like sound waves. I wonder if we were smaller if the air would look like the Pacific!
I absolutely love this book!!! It is my solace. It captures the beauty of my favorite thing in the world (the Ocean) with page after page of wonderful photographs. All they need to do is soak the book in Hawaiian Tropic suntan lotion and I would feel the sand between my toes.
