A Twist of Fate

Rate this book
Has a twist of fate sent her back in time? This is a question which plagues Arianna Ward when she wakes up to find her memory in fragments, like a long forgotten dream.

Everyone claims her name is Annabelle. The year is 1814 and she’s married to Captain Keldon Buchanan, a man who despises her. The more she learns about her life, the more she realizes why she’s chosen to forget it. She’s a liar and an adulteress. She doesn’t understand why she wanted to destroy her marriage when her heart tells her she belongs with Keldon.

Keldon harbors his own secrets. He's the Highland Pirate and secrecy is the difference between life and death. He doesn’t trust his wife, but he finds his heart softening to the woman his wife has become. If he didn’t know better, he’d swear he's married to another woman and he’s fallen in love with her.

I’m always a fan of time travel romance but this one was a bit of a let down. The idea of two people switching places in time was incredibly interesting but there was zero explanation as to how or why and it definitely left me wanting. That’s what I enjoy most about these stories, the explanations behind the phenomenon! Other than that it was an enjoyable story but I was just left wanting more at the end.

I have dropped this book for its lack of editing. I find that not one but three open ended quotations makes me a little bit edgy. I can really overlook spelling but when there is no ending quotation mark at the end, you tend to read past the point. This all make it necessary to re-read it over. It was very daunting to say the least.

I also find this story dragging. I find it quite boring and wonder why I was drawn to it in the first place. Oh yeah, I wanted a great romance time travel story. Does one even exist? Let me know.

Arianna Ward is a modern girl, with a bit of a crush on a gentleman from the distant past. She's not quite sure of anything but her name, as she suddenly finds herself mistress of a 1814 plantation. While she is married to Keldon Buchanan, the very gentleman whose portrait had fascinated her, the marriage isn't nearly happy. One might consider it a bitter, loveless thing. Everyone knows her as Annabelle, a heartless woman. Arianna struggles to remember who she is, while trying to save her husband from the dangerous life he leads. While he maintains a respectable facade on land, he turns into the savage highland pirate when he's captain of his ship. With glimpses of her past (or is it her future?) wreaking havoc, Arianna struggles to create a life for herself.
It was an easy, quick read, with a good pace, even if it is rather predictable. I did enjoy how the body swap worked- in so many of the books, the struggle is to get back to their own time. that was not even a consideration pondered by Arianna, which was a relief. It was a bit repetitive, though, as each new character realizes that Arianna isn't Anabelle. Each character in Arianna/Anabelle's life must have a long drawn out revelation that they really share nothing in common. The other thing that annoyed me the most was how the accents were written. Part of it was the stereotyped feel, the other part was the "here's the word, here's what it should be and why it isn't" that you get from time to time.
Overall, it was a good book, a bit interesting, but nothing spectacular.

Arianna Ward was roped into going to a fortune teller by her friend. After a strange prediction she is struck by a fallen beam and the next thing she knows its 1814 and people keep calling her Annabelle. While her memories of her earlier life is foggy she knows she couldn’t possibly be the horrible woman who everyone fears. She also find it hard to believe she is married to Keldon Buchanan, a man who despises her.

Keldon’s heart was broken once already by Annabelle and he is fighting his attraction to her now. His wife is now calling herself Arianna and seems to be a different woman but it could all just be an act.

This was an enjoyable, quick read with interesting characters and the plot was well defined and moved at a good pace.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. For more reviews please visit my blog:

Wonderful time travel

Arianna switches places with a truly awful woman in 1812. Struggling to remember her life and prove she is not the horrible Annabelle. Keldon the husband is disbelieving and cruel. The story is well woven into the historic events of the war. Very entertaining.

An enjoyable story and I will always give high ratings for any book where the author separates out fact and fiction at the end.

This book will definitely make it to my fave folder... One of the best time travel series for me.. You have Arianna who finds herself thrown back into the past inside a body of a woman who looks like her, who happens to be cruel to people around her and ends up with the case of mistaken identity... Then you have Keldon Buchanan, husband to Amanda ( the woman who traded places with Arianna- i know i get it= its confusing so you need to read the book) a Scot who happens to secretly be a pirate and preys on the boats of the british..
Overall like i said, this was a great, fun book.. very entertaining and had it all- romance, mystery and action.. only complaint was it was too short!

I have never read a book were I loved the beginning and it just kept getting worse. If you’re going to make a historical book, and then mix it with fantasy… why you keep slavery legal? Why did you even include it?

Ignoring that, the main character was an idiot. Never seen a person commit the worst decisions ever, reading this was like playing Episode without gems. Horrible experience, also I could never understand when the author wrote accents. I had to say the phrases out-loud to understand.

I dont usually read historical romance cause they seem long and boring. This one could have been longer and I would have kept wanting more!

I am going to try some of Karens other books to see if I enjoy them as much. If your skeptical about historical romance like me,then give this book a try. Time travel, pirate action, war history and a love story to tie it all together. Not a bad combination!

Pretty good time travel romance. As far as the plot goes, it is pretty average for the genre, and it falls into some tiresomely predictable historical inaccuracies to retain political correctness. (Everyone mistreats their slaves in the south. The slaves don't eat well, blah blah blah.) But if this is ignored or edited out, it is a reasonably enjoyable story with memorable and vivid characters.

I loved the idea that someone sent back in time did not share the same name as her 'swap'. Any confusion was solved since the characters of the women were chalk and cheese; the similarity of their names easy to absorb. The haziness of Arianna's memory is just right for me. As a Scot I have to wonder where the Scots dialect/spelling of Keldon's speech came from- I was, perhaps, not meant to find it amusing...but I DID!

This book puts an interesting, yet easy to understand twist on time travel. I usually don't get time travel but it makes sense since arianna only moves through time once.

This is a sweet story that really emphasizes the idea of soul mates... Overall I enjoyed it, but there were some bland parts.

A Twist of Fate

A Twist of Fate by Karen Michelle Nutt was an interesting an read not overly sentimental and with no unnecessary sex to keep the story going. This is a good historical fiction time travel story. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading more by this writer.

DNF Scattered

I would have liked this story a lot but the story kept going back and forth between characters without warning… it’s just frustrating you always have to figure out who’s center stage at the moment.

I liked the twist of the time travel in this book. It's not as cliche as other time travel books.
I have to admit that it was a bit slow in the middle but the ending made up for it.

A Twist of Fate has a quick pace in this time traveling romance that focuses on time traveller Arianna and blast from the past Keldon Buchanan in southern America during the 1800s. I was in the mood for a story ripe with angst and turmoil and what I read fell short in both categories.

A Twist of Fate was reminiscent to Sandra Hill’s gem of a time traveling story Frankly My Dear... something I was looking forward to, however A Twist of Fate was done with less brazen heat and unbelievable connection between the characters as well as a lot of dumbness in the characters— who doesn’t recognize their own wife’s features have changed all of a sudden after having been married for years? Completely unbelievable.

For a historical time traveling romance focused in Southern America, pick up Frankly My Dear… by Sandra Hill for a romantic, entertaining ride— you will not be remiss.

I received free copy from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review. This book was definitely different than most books in the genre with the Paranormal time-traveling aspect. Ariana is sent back in time replacing Annabelle in the early 1800s. This is my first time rrading anything by this author and it definitely was a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

this is another great read from Karen Michelle Nutt. I read her first series and now I liked this book just as much. She has a unique clean writing style that draws you in and just won't let you put the book down. I read this one in 5 hours. Highly recommend.

Thank you to Netgalley, the Publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for my honest opinion and review.

Arianna Ward is hosting an event to raise money for Blue Run House in the present day and is talked into visiting a fortuneteller at the old estate. The fortuneteller gives her a specific but cryptic message; she tells her that she belongs in another time and that she will meet a man with black hair and cat green eyes called the Scotsman, she tells her, "Trust him, for he will protect you. He may feel mistrust for you because of the other woman's black heart, but in time, he will see you for who you really are. He's your soul mate. It is his child you will carry". Arianna is then hit on the head and sent back in time, to Blue Run, taking the place of a black hearted woman named Annabelle. As she tries to maneuver who she is and where she is, we watch as Keldon slowly starts to trust her, thinking this bump on the head must be for the best. Meanwhile Arianna discovers that she, as she thinks she must be Annabelle, was a terrible person, who no regard for anyone but herself. She turns the opinions of everyone around at the end and all ends well, as it should.

Lots of history involved here and I love that the author at the end tells us what sections of the book are true facts. I read a lot of thrillers, but sometimes I crave a feel-good romance and this hit the mark, it had all the things I like for feel-good books, attractive brooding man, a great misunderstanding, a dual storyline or time travel, and a happy ending. I walked away from this book with a happy heart. Yes, there were some editing mistakes and a few errors but none of them were big enough to take away from my enjoyment of the book.

This is the first book I have read from this author, and I would definitely be inclined to read more of her works.
