Well I am neither shocked nor disappointed. This book was exactly what I was expecting it to be. Light-hearted, shallow and cringe inducing. Okay, that is a bit harsh. It wasn’t terrible, I just wasn’t great either.
The storyline in this book was exactly what you expected. What it says in the blurb, is exactly what happens. No twists, no turns, no unexpected outcomes. It is exactly what it says on the tin. This is why I had reservations about this reading this book. I just knew that it was going to be completely predictable and not very original. Not a single thing that happened in this book surprised me. It was all just expected. It really annoys me when books are as predictable as this one, because it takes a lot of the joy out of reading it. I am feel like I am being really critical of this book, and a bit harsh, but I am being honest. I am also trying to keep reminding myself that this was published in 2009 and is definitely a product of its time. The YA category was only just becoming a thing then, and lot of books where predictable like this.
I also found the storyline ridicules. No one has that much bad luck. Never, in the history of the world, has that many things gone wrong for two people in such a short space of time. It was just so unbelievable and ridicules that I just found myself rolling my eyes constantly. This was the authors attempts at plot twists and it failed, miserably.
I will say this though, those characters annoyed the shit out of me. Lila was just so shallow and vain; I just could not stand her. I hate characters like her. she had completely changed herself in the pursuit of popularity (urgh) and this book was essentially about her ‘rediscovering’ who she truly is and all that crap. But it did not do it well. Right up until the last page she was still selfish and manipulative and I just could not stand her. I also felt like the whole Beau side of the story was really forced. I didn’t feel like there was any chemistry between them.
As you can tell, I didn’t enjoy this book. I will openly admit that by the halfway point I was just so done with it that I ended up skim reading the rest of the book. I hate giving bad reviews for books but I honestly cannot pull out any positives about this book. It was just so, blurgh. Also, wasn’t at all festive!
