"Diabolical! Filled with twists, turns, crosses and double-crosses, Sullivan delivers a harrowing international thriller" —Lisa GardnerRobin Monarch is a man with a complicated, secret past and a very grim future. Currently locked up in the USDB—the military supermax prison known as Leavenworth—the CIA offers Monarch one shot at freedom and a pardon. All he has to do is steal something from a highly secure position at ground zero of a war-zone and escape undetected. But this isn't Monarch's first time at this sort of dance—as an orphaned teen scraping for survival on the streets of Buenos Aires he was involved with the Fraternidad de Ladrones—the Brotherhood that schooled him the art of deception and survival. But his initiation rite is to take all the skills he has learned, and all the nerve he possesses and steal something of great value under impossible circumstances. In both cases, success will require everything he has—skill, wit, endurance, and intelligence—and means survival and freedom. And failure...failure is to lose all that he has.Introducing Robin Monarch ("a Jason Bourne for the new millenium" —James Rollins) in the first in a series of standalone short stories. Think Bourne. Think Bond. Think better.

Mark T. Sullivan (b. 1958) is an author of thrillers. Born in a Boston suburb, he joined the Peace Corp after college, traveling to West Africa to live with a tribe of Saharan nomads. Upon returning to the United States, he took a job at Reuters, beginning a decade-long career in journalism that would eventually lead to a job as an investigative reporter for the San Diego Tribune.

Sullivan spent the winter of 1990 living with a group of skiers in Utah and Wyoming, and used the experience as the foundation for his first novel, The Fall Line (1994). In 1995 he published Hard News, a thriller based on his work as a reporter, and a year later he released The Purification Ceremony, which won the WH Smith Award for Best New Talent. His most recent work is Private Games (2012), which he co-authored with James Patterson. Sullivan lives with his family in Montana, where he skis, hunts, and practices martial arts.

I am on a Mark Sullivan reading odyssey after recently reading The Last Green Valley which I rated five stars and subsequently added all Mark Sullivan books to my TBR.

Brotherhood is a short story that I listened to on audiobook. Robin Monarch, the main protagonist, is given one shot at freedom. But he has to earn it by stealing precious jewelry and artwork.

I enjoyed the action and intrigue but it wasn't as captivating as The Last Green Valley and The Escape Artist.

This was a fun one. You got to see how Robin got on the CIA's radar and how he was able to gain entry into the gang that was so influential to his young life.

It was a quick book, kind of a short pre-quel. Robin is a high-speed asset for the CIA, who excels in quiet removals. He is characterized as a thief but he has built up an impressive set of skills. Think 'Grey Man', the Scot Horvath novels after he is no longer 'in the fold' and some of the other 'singleton' figures out there. I am looking forward to Mr. Sullivan's longer books to see how Robin's character grows.

The Lovable Thief

After reading the Robin Monarch trio, I was excited to find anything else on the man, the thief, the flawed hero, Robin Monarch. I was thrilled that author Mark Sullivan has written two short bookshots to fill in more of Robin's back story. A fast read to add after or before the trio. Great reads!

Extremely short (knocked a star off for its brevity) but fun introduction. It jumps back and forth between past and present which is a bit much for such a short prequel. I did enjoy it and plan to read more of this series.

I am eagerly awaiting the third of the main Robin Monarch books but this was a very cool short origin story. I really enjoyed both major plot lines and was sucked in immediately.

It’s an OK read

At best a poolside book to kill the time.
It’s not bad but not much of a plot and build up to a climax, kind of disappointed.

A short back story on the gang as well as the theft of the Bagdad battle plans. This introduction of the back story is a good one and fills in some of the gaps in the other stories. It makes Robin a more complete thief as well as war hero.

Decent writing. But. Not my genre. Way too short; skimpy on some details; choppy between time narratives. And I am definitely not a fan of the ending.

Quick read. Prequel to Robin Monarch series. Interesting perspective both from his childhood and CIA story.

Wow

Definitely worthy of 5* exploring the past and present as they work parallel to each other in the story.

Even as a short story, this definitely works.

It only took me an hour to read, and I was so disappointed when I got to the last page as I wanted it to carry on with more. A disappointment too that the hero 'Rogue' ended up in bed with the woman CIA officer. So predictable. But there are two other short books to read I believe, so I may just carry on. Well written but too many flashbacks for me.
