Could not finish.

This book is greatly outdated. And here is the thing, if you have a mild form of OCD it might help. But if you have a more complex form of OCD, associated with other medical problems, this book can actually cause anxiety and more OCD. Here's why:

If you already have a tendency to obsess, reading this book, and the extreme examples they use, can cause you to obsesses even more. I found myself doing things, that I don't usually do, like check door knobs multi times and checking the stove even when it was not used. This increased anxiety.

Just my experience with this book. Take that for what it is.

This book was recommended to me by my psychologist, who greatly respects both authors and told me they're the leading experts in the world at treating OCD. It helped me tremendously in my healing journey with severe OCD. Many books leave you hanging on the topic of Pure O, which is my greatest struggle: But this book has an entire chapter entirely dedicated to Pure O with tons of helpful tricks. I give this book a lot of credit for helping to pull me out of the hole that is pure obsessional OCD. It took many months and a LOT of patience and dedication, but the techniques presented by the authors really did help. This isn't speculation, this isn't feel-good mumbo-jumbo: This is science, and these are the pros who can help you get better.

Just a few thoughts and impressions.
- In the beginning of the book it repeatedly Rams down your throat that these people are professionals and completely right. It's annoying and condescending which is a bad first impression.
- The work pages do somewhat help with understanding your OCD
-The high majority of the book is about successful test cases, which seem a bit too extraordinary. I mean, did these people really cure themselves of OCD in one week? All of them?
- The form of help will take hours and hours everyday. Even if you have that much time it would be exhausting! And even if you did it, you would need to keep doing it for every new obsession you suffered. This book assumes you are obsessed with one thing and will only ever be obsessed with one thing. That isn't how my OCD works...
- The only thing I liked from this book was the idea to write down the current thing you are obsessed with every time you think it so you can see how baseless and redundant it is.
- I only dropped the book at the end where you make your own program. Even then, I did get through some of that but I couldn't finish.

My psychologist lent me this book thinking I was suffering from OCD. After reading 70 pages, however, it was clear that she misdiagnosed me. I have compulsions but they aren't due to obsessions. I've bookmarked the page that clearly states that someone with my types of compulsions is not OCD and plan on showing it to her during our next session.

I definitely learned a few things about OCD and its origins as well as a few things about myself while reading this book, but I felt that I actually developed more symptoms that I didn’t have before after reading it. The book gave some good insight into how to notice when compulsions are starting and how to stop them, but I felt that a lot of the methods they were promoting to stop OCD were a bit obsessive, especially in cases such as mine. This book and its methods might be great for someone else, but I feel that everyone is different (as is their OCD and the person’s background), so not everyone’s treatment can be treated the exact same.

I can't recommend you stay far enough away from this book. It feels outdated, and also a bit victim blame-y at times. I came across the following sentence early on in the book, and it seems to show their true feelings:

"For instance, so far you have chosen to worry over and over again about particular fearful events."

I, like everyone with OCD, did not choose to worry about any of this. The worrying is absolutely against my will and I honestly find it appalling that someone who gets OCD fundamentally wrong like this wrote a self help book for it.

Avoid at all costs, even if someone tries to give it to you for free.

Very informative book on OCD and how to overcome it. While the majority of the book assumes the reader is using the information for self-help, the authors have included chapters on using professional help and another on medication. This reader felt the book was better read by a family member or a friend of someone suffering with OCD than by the OCD individual as it seemed quite easy for the mind to pick up new ideas to obsess about through the reading. The authors explain different areas of obsessions and how to maneuver one's mind away from compulsions.

I have been struggling with OCDs for the past 5 years atleast, so I'll not be v easy with telling here that this Book helped me totally, nothing ever helped me, this Book has just made it easier for me to acknowledge my issues. But I am not sure, ERP treatment is valid and all, but with my memory level, I'll end up remembering the trauma forever, if I have to follow the solutions given in this Book, that makes it uncertain for me, I am still scared of jumping into the solutions given here.

But btw yes, this was an easy read

The exercises are counter-intuitive but effective and silly in a way that makes me feel at home in my brain. Though the book targets OCD the application is endless for all forms of mental torture we endure. I like how OCD is described as "the disease of uncertainty". For someone who wants to skip to the juiciness part II contains the general exercises. I wish the case studies described the individual psychology with greater depth- though perhaps this is the forewarned "don't analyze" in action.

a little dated on the hereditary, but its very useful. rented a copy from library, realized halfway i would need to bust out the highlighters and sticky notes so went back and bought copy for future relapses and times of need
glad my therapist recommended it!

I read this for research to understand OCD and better navigate those close to me with OCD. It seems it was written for those with OCD but it still gave me lots of context to understand the OCD mind and steps to recovery.

Probably sound advice, but the people this book is addressing have more severe forms of OCD than what I deal with.

The language is outdated, but has been very helpful navigating a difficult thing to live with... Practical, 'tough love' and compassionate
