Men! Her brothers still treat her like a baby and the infuriating, oh-so-high-and-mighty Mr. Heath Marsterson treats her like a little girl. Well watch out boys … when Laney St. Clair decides to fight for what she wants, everyone better get out of her way!Mechanic Laney St. Clair doesn’t want much in life. All she wants is to run her father’s garage as she sees fit, her brothers to stop treating her like she is still their baby sister, and for Heath Marsterson to realise that under all the grease and overalls she is a grown woman, ready, willing, and able to show him just how talented her hands can be.Heath’s an alpha shifter who knows he needs a mate to help him rule. A strong woman who can stand with him and up to him when needed, a woman who can help keep his pack safe. What he doesn’t need is a fragile human whose family protects her as if she’s made of spun glass. No matter how persuasive little Laney-girl tries to be or how much he wants her, Heath knows she’ll never be strong enough to handle his true self no matter what she says, moans, screams…
Cherie Nicholls is an author of Paranormal Romance. By day she is an IT Manager and by night she whips up worlds where alpha men find their mates and people are always more than human.
Cherie was born and lives in London, UK and is a daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, aunt-in-law, great-aunt, and godmother in an ever growing family. She has a passion for shifter stories, most any sport and thimbles...don’t ask.
Laney St. Clair wanted to have Heath Marsterson from the moment he moved into the area.
She had waited five years for this night. Five long years of cold lonely nights, dreaming of nothing but his shoulder-length white-blond hair, and that six foot plus, hard muscular frame.
Heath knows that Laney is his mate, but she is a human and he fears that she couldn’t stand by herself in the middle of the pack, especially with the old Alpha back in town, causing problems.
In the middle of all this, we have sizzling scenes and some humor. Here is one most hilarious dialogue I ever read, when Heath expected to have all the night with Laney and the pack came to see a game… I couldn’t stop laughing.
“Dude, we thought we could watch the game on your large-screen TV.” “Not tonight, people,” Heath told them. “Dude!” Wall huffed. “No.” Laney watched the byplay, shaking her head. Were all packs this goofy? “Dude.” Wall smiled with open arms. “No.” Heath said again. “But dude.” It was just too shameful watching two grown naked men standing there speaking in one-word sentences.
And if you think that this is the most amusing part of the book, check the conversation between Heath and Laney’s mother.
And we also have the words of Heath when he finally realizes that Laney is made for him:
What I want is forever. I want us to grow old and grey together, to run the pack together, and I want us to have many pups. I want us to be a family. You mean more to me than my next breath, Laney-girl, more than seeing another day.
Isn’t it romantic? Although I felt that the book ended too soon and lacked in action, the story is based on the relation between characters, it was wonderful and I will give it 4.5 stars.
Every now and then you come across a book that within the first page you just know it’s good, and then you get to the end and say “Yep, that’s it, that is why I read books.” I am a sucker for a paranormal romance that has just enough sexy details to make it steamy, but doesn’t go overboard and make it smut. Ms. Cherie Nicholls and I must be on the same wave length because this book has become a favorite, and quite possibly one I will compare other books too in the future.
Let’s start with characters. Heath (fan myself) Oh wait, I mean Alpha. He is the ultimate wolf-boy of my fantasy land. Dominate, sexy as hell, and knows how to flirt and please his woman…need I say more! Laney is who I can aspire to be in my alternate life (hehe). A strong independent woman, often underestimated, but goes after what she wants, whenever she wants it.
The one thing I would ever change about this book is the blurb, and maybe the cover art (I know that is two things), but honestly it suggests and depicts more smut content. The sexual scenes have some details, but nothing overboard, and there aren’t a whole lot of them. So don’t let those details deter you from reading this incredibly addictive book….and by addictive I mean, I skipped watching one of my favorite shows so I didn’t have to put this book down!
This is book one in this new series, but there was no cliffhanger on Heath and Laney’s romance which suggests one (or more) of the secondary characters will step into the spotlight. Hmmm might Clara and Wall be the next installment…I can’t wait!
This book is definitely going on my reread list and I will be watching for new work from Ms. Cherie Nicholls. LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!
Didn't connect to the characters, found the bdsm elements kinda sketch and the hero's habit of dictating to/manhandling/kidnapping the heroine very sketch. About every chapter, he could see the "hurt in her eye" caused by his dick-ish behavior, but he never made any noticable attempt to listen to her. Although compared to the heroine's family, he's actually not that bad. (Not that her family is presented as bad, but they seemed sexually controlling and abusive to me. Which was actually kind of creepy, since they were presented as loving.)
Overall, not enough character growth and too much reliance on paint-by-numbers PNR tropes.
I love the humour throughout the book and Ms Nicholls has created a very believable community for her wolf shifters. Looking forward to the next in the series :)
Mechanic Laney St. Clair is a woman on a mission. Tired of being overlooked by her crush Alpha Heath Masterson, Laney has a bit of a makeover determined to snare his attention. Of course Heath decides to go big brother on her, until Laney catches him off guard and leaves no question to what she wants, him.
Heath and his wolf want Laney as their mate, but taking a human delicate woman like Laney as a mate wont work. He needs a strong mate, one who can weather whatever storm comes her way. Points are not given to Alpha's for intelligence though, because Laney is no ordinary woman and she can hold her own with any man shifter or not.
First in the Shifters of Hillside series. This was quite fun but the two of them need their heads knocked together. Laney is hurt by Heath's idiocy and Heath is determined not to hurt Laney. Picking up the rest in the series soon.
I'm not sure what's up with the 4 star reviews, were we all reading the same book? O.o
It was overall, bad. Bad writing, bad characters, bad plot. I didn't feel anything but bored reading this and at one point wondered if I could finish it.
I will say, I could see what the author was reaching for, and there were moments when I saw real potential for future works.
This was nice for a short read, but nothing about it will stand out in my mind. I liked that Laney was so strong. I wish there were more times for her to prove herself in front of Heath. Because just standing up to him didn't seem like enough. Oh well, I enjoyed reading it.
I am a slow reader but I have managed to read from chapter three to the end in one day. Yes it's that good! Shifter, action, romance and its hot! Not to mention the humour that every girl can relate to. Recommend this book.
