She was born to a couple of Cuban actors and she was part of an extended family of artists, being the sister of Venezuelan actor Leon Bravo, one of the pioneers of theater, radio and TV in Venezuela. She published her first book at the age of 16, titled Pétalos sueltos. She then moved back to Cuba with her parents, and later returned to Mexico, where she kept writing and obtained a role in her only film, Corazón bandolero (1934). She became a chair member of the Ateneo Mexicano de Mujeres and later moved back to Cuba, where she wrote the radionovela Yo no creo en los hombres, which was adapted in Mexico for telenovelas in 1969 and 1988. Είπα να πιάσω κάτι ανάλαφρο γιατί διανύω περίοδο αναγνωστικής καθίζησης είτε γιατι δεν έχω το χρόνο να διαβάσω είτε γιατί δε μπορώ να συγκεντρωθώ να διαβάσω αλλά αποτύχαμε και πάλι. Αναγνωστικός οίστρος αγνοείται. 3 αστεράκια όμως γιατί να την πω την αμαρτία μου με πήγε πίσω στα σχολικά μου χρόνια και τα αξέχαστα απογεύματα που πήγαινα σχολείο και αντί να παρακολουθώ με ευλάβεια τον καθηγητή αναρωτιόμουν αν η μάνα πάτησε το play σωστά για να μου γράψει στο βίντεο την τηλεοπτική μεταφορά του συγκεκριμένου βιβλίου με ελληνικό τίτλο Βερόνικα. Βερόνικα στα 15 σε αγάπησα στα 33 δεν έκοψα τις φλέβες αλλά anyway thanks for the memories. Μακάρι να μπορούσα να πατήσω rewind σε εκεινα τα όμορφα και αθώα χρόνια

Λοιπόν... αποφάσισα από εδώ και στο εξής με το νέο έτος να γράφω και λίγα λόγια για το κάθε βιβλίο που διαβάζω, όχι μόνο να βαθμολογώ με τα αντίστοιχα αστεράκια. Θα το κάνω και για τα προηγούμενα δύο που διάβασα ελπίζοντας φυσικά ότι θα καταφέρω να πιάσω τον στόχο της χρονιάς που είναι τα 100 βιβλία!
Το βιβλίο αυτό με παίδεψε λίγο για να καταλήξω στο συμπέρασμα αν μου άρεσε λίγο ή πολύ. Το θέμα μου άρεσε, μου άρεσε πάρα πολύ και δεν μπορώ παρά να επηρεάζομαι λιγάκι από την Μεξικάνικη τηλεοπτική του μεταφορά με τον τίτλο Βερόνικα το οποίο παρακολουθήσαμε πριν από περίπου δέκα χρόνια την εποχή που η Μεξικάνικη - μεταγλωττισμένη τηλενουβέλα είχε τις δόξες της!
Στο θέμα μας όμως το οποίο δεν είναι άλλο από το ίδιο το βιβλίο. Όπως είπα και πιο πάνω η βάση του είναι πάρα πολύ καλή σύμφωνα με τα γούστα μου. Όμως είναι ένα βιβλίο που γράφτηκε γύρω στο 1960, μιλάει για μία περασμένη εποχή και επιτρέψτε μου να πω ότι είναι γραμμένο σαν κλασσική τηλενουβέλα! Έχει πάρα πολλούς και συνεχόμενους διαλόγους σε βαθμό να μην μπορείς να ξεχωρίσεις ποιος μιλάει κάθε φορά. Μερικές φορές ένιωσα σαν να διαβάζω θεατρικό έργο ενώ τα γνωστά "κλισέ" δεν έλειψαν καθόλου.
Το τελικό μου συμπέρασμα όμως είναι ότι μου άρεσε, μου άρεσε πολύ ακριβώς επειδή οι μεγάλοι και δυνατοί έρωτες πάντα καταφέρνουν με κάποιο τρόπο να με γοητεύσουν κι έτσι δεν θα μπορούσε αυτό το βιβλίο να αποτελεί εξαίρεση. ;)

Demetrio San Telmo discovers his half-brother Ricardo Silveira had committed suicide because of a woman. The woman's identity is a mystery to anyone who'd known Ricardo, and the man had even destroyed her photo. The only proof Demetrio has, is a handkerchief with an embroidered initial. The woman's name begins with a V.
He travels to Rio de Janeiro and the house of the Castelo Branco only to discover there are two young ladies living under their roof. The shy and sickly Virginia and a brazen, outspoken beauty, Veronica who quickly catches his eye. And although he ardently hopes that she's not the one he's looking for, an overheard conversation between the son of the Castelo Branco, Juan a.k.a. Johhny, and Virginia opens his eyes to the truth. Veronica had been the one that led Ricardo to his death, and apparently his brother hadn't been the only one to fall into the temptress's trap.
Decided on exacting his revenge, making the woman suffer as much as Ricardo had, Demetrio makes Veronica fall in love with him, marries her, and whisks her away into the jungle, into the same village Ricardo had lived and died in. Little does he know that both he and Veronica are victims of a lie, a mentira that will irrevocably change their lives.
For those who watch telenovelas, this is a well-known story, rehashed and refurbished so many times it's impossible to find any original elements in it anymore. But let me tell you, there is a vast difference between a TV rendition of the story, and the written "original".
Sure, it reads like a Harlequin of old (having been written in the seventies), but it's written better than most Harlequins nowadays. Although it consists mostly of dialogs, with an odd descriptive sentence thrown into the mix from time to time, it's easy to keep pace with, and far from boring (go figure). The characters are nicely fleshed out, and although it falls rather short of explaining just how and why Veronica would and could forgive Demetrio in the end, it provides the requisite happy ending. Although I wished for a longer resolution and an epilogue wouldn't have hurt.
Now, as Harlequin story would and should, La mentira also falls prey to the usual misunderstanding-fueled plot, but let's face it, without the misunderstanding (and the lie), If Demetrio had had the presence of mind to ask the neighbor how Ricardo's woman looked like or, once married, asked the same neighbor if Veronica was that woman, there would be no story.
So, if you decide to read this (it's in Spanish and the versions available on line are full of typos!), make sure you get into the right frame of mind. Suspend your disbelief and immerse yourself into the story that has inspired so many telenovelas. You won't be sorry.

Un libro que he leído muchas veces ya...
Como autora de novelas llevadas luego a la televisión como telenovelas o al cine como películas, esta es de mis favoritas.
Sé que de esta novela hay adaptaciones en ambos formatos porque he visto películas y anuncios de las telenovelas. No sé qué tan bien adaptadas estén las telenovelas, pero las dos películas que vi son bastante buenas.
La historia en este momento no sería nada popular: una mujer que es enamorada por un hombre que solo busca venganza, se casa con ella solo para hacerla sufrir y en el fondo dice estar muy enamorado de ella... en realidad ahora se vería con nuevo ojos, como lo que es: un ejemplo de violencia hacia las mujeres realmente despreciable.
Como ejemplo de la literatura de hace algunos años, está bien escrito, es consistente en sí mismo y tiene personajes muy interesantes. Pero definitivamente está pasado de moda, desubicado y en la actualidad el final tendría que ser completamente otro.

100 episode 1998 telenovela is currently streaming on demand on Vix and is considered by far the best version--adds much to the original story, combining both Hero's Journey and feminist Heroine's Journey (see Wikipedia). Questions raised in another review in English are answered by this now classic, deliciously enjoyable telenovela treat.
BTW, 1953 black & white film version was released on DVD. I've also seen later movie version in color starring actor who much later played Don Noel in 1990's telenovela of CORAZON SALVAJE starring Eduardo Palomo & Edith Gonzales.
Drastically edited two-DVD set for 1998 series cut down to only about 10 hours out of original length almost 10 times that long, does have English sub-titles to give gist of story for those who don't know much Spanish (yet).
But since most of fan-favorite battles of the sexes fights between lovers (which illustrate struggles to suppress intense passion that couldn't be shown in program aired during original family viewing hour) were chopped from brief DVD version, that gives skewed idea of story which can come off as rather imbalanced from sweet kissing scenes without spice of fire & humor of great chemistry among wonderful cast.
More analysis, explanations & information about the beloved telenovela version starring Kate del Castillo (her real-life father Eric plays Veronica's adoptive Uncle Teo) and Guy Ecker are on blog.
Watching telenovelas is fun way to improve language comprehention, aided by actors' vocal tones & expressions. Lots of symbolic visuals help too. Turning on captions in Spanish when viewing on Vix can also assist in recognizing words that are cognates in English, if you have good vocabulary in latter. For example, "La Mentira" (The Lie) is related to "mendacious".
Inspired by Shakespeare's OTHELLO (but with twist that "Desdemona Strikes Back") & MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM--as well as Greek myth of Persephone & Demeter--see if you can recognize allusions in 1998 telenovela LA MENTIRA.

Este libro es básicamente un placer culposo para mí, lo leí porque me encantaron las versiones televisivas de esta historia. Tiene todos los elementos de las telenovelas mexicanas, es extremadamente dramática y exagerada, con una protagonista que aparte de ser huérfana,sufre injustamente los maltratos de su familia adoptiva y del hombre que ama. Al leer el libro comprendí que por su contexto histórico y en la época en que fue escrito era bastante machista, Demetrio era un mal tipo, durante toda la historia trató terriblemente mal a Verónica y todo por su deseo de venganza.La verdad es que no entiendo como se enamoró Verónica de Demetrio si él nunca le demostró amor ni respeto y ella dejó todo por seguirlo cuando no valía la pena. Lo más aterrador de todo es que después de desenmascarar a la culpable, lo perdona. Obviamente al ver las telenovelas yo era de las que amaba al protagonista y quería que al final quedaran juntos, pero pensándolo bien esta historia es muy tóxica, todos los personajes están locos, sus acciones son de lo más rebuscadas y salidas de quicio y lo peor es cómo esto se convirtió en el ideal de romance, cómo año tras año graban nuevas versiones de esta novela y seguimos enamorándonos de estos personajes y de estas situaciones que en 2020 ya no deberían ser aceptables.

Aquel nombre que parece deshacerse en sus labios como una exquisita golosina, como un panal de miel purísima que destilara en cambio sobre su corazón amargor de hieles y de mirra.
Es la primera novela que leo de esta autora, me gustaría señalar un par de aspectos a nivel narrativo:
1. Me llamó la atención la cantidad de diálogos a lo largo de la novela, es bastante, de hecho, no había tanta narración y en su mayoría era breve. ¿Es esto algo negativo? No necesariamente, aunque debo agregar que en los diálogos muchas veces se presentó falta de acotaciones, por lo que me perdía y no sabía qué personaje estaba hablando.
2. El lenguaje si bien no es el más avanzado de la vida, es una muestra histórica de cómo se hablaba (o mejor dicho; escribía) en México en aquel entonces. La narración sí puede llegar a caer en lo simple, que, reiterando, no es necesariamente negativo, sin embargo es un punto a considerar ya que esta obra no va a aportar gran valor en ese aspecto, pero no significa que sea mala.
3. Aún con lo dicho anteriormente, sí hay descripciones bellas, como la que coloqué a modo de cita al inicio de la presente reseña.
Pasando a los puntos positivos:
1. Es una novela rápida de leer debido a su trama, capítulos cortos, situaciones y drama, eso puede ser beneficioso dependiendo de lo que el lector esté buscando en ese momento.
2. Los personajes aunque puedan caer en lo absurdo por la falta de comunicación y ser cuestionables (en especial los hombres), presentan conceptos interesantes, tienen matices y convicciones bien definidas.
3. La trama no aburre ni decae en ningún momento, por el contrario, te mantiene con la curiosidad de saber qué sucederá.
Ahora, considero que los aspectos negativos pueden resumirse en un solo punto general:
Esta novela es un producto de su época y se nota muchísimo, por lo que considero pertinente tener esa mentalidad al momento de leerla.
Si hay algo que me sorprendió para mal, además de la clara misoginia (que mencionaré más adelante) es el racismo tan marcado hacia los personajes de origen indígena, en particular Ayesha e Iguazú. Me parece tan impresionante como aterrador que en una obra literaria mexicana del siglo XX encontré mucho más racismo que en clásicos europeos del siglo XIX (las obras de Oscar Wilde, por ejemplo). Esas actitudes hacia esos personajes llegaron a ser cansinas y hasta estresantes aún cuando llevaba la mentalidad de que estaba leyendo algo muy antiguo y que debía saber a lo que me atenía. Y es que esto no fue solo cosa de los personajes blancos, por como hablan todos y la misma narración se nota que eran pensamientos genuinos de la autora, a la que por supuesto no voy a juzgar severamente, sería absurdo, ella ya falleció hace más de 30 años.
Pasando al tema de la misoginia: Demetrio es un personaje despreciable y merecía terminar igual que Virginia. También me sorprendió para mal que a Virginia se le castigara tan duramente, mientras que Demetrio que se comportó igual que ella se le justificó y perdonó todo. Creo que este apartado es una clara muestra de que la obra es un producto de su época y que se le debe de tomar como tal.
Es una historia entretenida, nada muy trascendental, pero puede aportar una mirada histórica a como era mi país en el siglo pasado.
Ya que soy gran fan de la versión de los 90 de Corazón Salvaje, también leeré dicha trilogía.

Esas actitudes hacia esos personajes llegaron a ser cansinas y hasta estresantes aún cuando llevaba la mentalidad de que estaba leyendo algo muy antiguo y que debía saber a lo que me atenía. Y es que esto no fue solo cosa de los personajes blancos, por como hablan todos y la misma narración se nota que eran pensamientos genuinos de la autora, a la que por supuesto no voy a juzgar severamente, sería absurdo, ella ya falleció hace más de 30 años.
Pasando al tema de la misoginia: Demetrio es un personaje despreciable y merecía terminar igual que Virginia. También me sorprendió para mal que a Virginia se le castigara tan duramente, mientras que Demetrio que se comportó igual que ella se le justificó y perdonó todo. Creo que este apartado es una clara muestra de que la obra es un producto de su época y que se le debe de tomar como tal.
Es una historia entretenida, nada muy trascendental, pero puede aportar una mirada histórica a como era mi país en el siglo pasado.
Ya que soy gran fan de la versión de los 90 de Corazón Salvaje, también leeré dicha trilogía.

Incluso dejando de lado la justificación del maltrato porque era la época y lo que se llevaban eran los libros con relaciones muy tormentosas, no puedo con la estupidez. Nunca me han gustado las novelas de enredos a menos que sean comedias, porque no puedo tomarme en serio problemas que en realidad son enredos que se resolverían en una conversación de diez minutos. Los Idiot Plot (o sea, tramas que se resolverían en minutos si no fuera porque todo el mundo es idiota) me hacen poner los ojos en blanco. Y es lo que pasa aquí: la gente es idiota y no habla ni comprueba las cosas o suceden casualidades muy convenientes para mantener la trama. Si fuera que es una red de engaños y mentiras tipo conspiración, que requiera mucha inteligencia y artimañas, me interesaría; pero no, aquí son mentiras ridículas y el elenco es idiota y no verifica nada.

Probably one of the worst books I have read. It really shows she was writing for TV. The story is the most base superficial female drama that you can find. Seriously even an 15 year old can write this. Complete waste of my time. I read it just because someone gave to me for free.

Την Καριδάδ Μπράβο Άδαμς τη γνώρισα πρώτα μέσα από τις σειρές που γυρίστηκαν βασισμένες στα βιβλία της και ύστερα διαβάζοντας τα όμορφα βιβλία της. Ως παιδί μεγαλωμένο στα '90s λοιπόν, περίμενα και εγώ να γυρίσω από το φροντιστήριο για να δω με τους δύο καλύτερους μου φίλους τη "Βερόνικα".(πρωτότυπος τίτλος "La Mentira") Αυτή η σειρά ήταν βασισμένη στο βιβλίο "ΤΟ ΨΕΜΑ" που διάβασα αρκετά χρόνια αργότερα και δεν μπορούσα να αφήσω από τα χέρια μου.
Πρόκειται για την ιστορία δύο νεαρών γυναικών, της Βερόνικα και της Βιρχίνια, που είναι μεγαλωμένες από ένα ζευγάρι πλουσίων, του Τεοδόρο και της Σάρα Δε Καστέλο Μπράνκο, ως ανηψιές τους και χωρίς να τις ξεχωρίζουν από τον γιο τους, Χουάν. Η Βερόνικα είναι γεμάτη ζωή, κεφάτη, θαραλλέα, κοινωνική και αρκετά μπροστά από την εποχή της. Στον αντίποδα η Βιρχίνια είναι ντροπαλή, διστακτική και λόγω μιας ασθένειας που τη βασανίζει από παιδί δεν έχει μεγάλο κοινωνικό περίγυρο. Λόγω της ιδιοσυγκρασίας της, η θεία τους έχει αδυναμία στη Βιρχίνια και τη μεγαλώνει ως μελλοντική της νύφη, ενώ τη Βερόνικα την κατακρίνει για ό,τι και αν κάνει. Ο Χουάν όμως και ο θείος τους όμως προτιμούν την παρέα της Βερόνικα.
Μέχρι που στη ζωή τους εμφανίζεται ο Δεμέτριο, ένας μυστηριώδης άνδρας που έχει ένα λυπηρό παρελθόν. Ο Ρικάρδο, ο αδερφός του, αυτοκτόνησε λόγω μιας γυναίκας που τον εξαπάτησε. Αυτή η γυναίκα είναι μία εκ των νεαρών δεσποινίδων της οικογένειας Καστέλο Μπράνκο. Όταν ο νεαρός Ρικάρδο ήταν στη δούλεψη του κύριου Τεοδόρο τη γνώρισε, δημιούργησε σχέση μαζί της(κάτι εντελώς ανάρμοστο για το Ρίο Ντε Τζανέιρο εκείνης της εποχής) και εκείνη τον πρόετρεψε να δημιουργήσει τη δική του επιχείρηση σε ένα μακρινό μέρος, ξεχασμένο από τον Θεό, ώστε να γυρίσει και να την πάρει για να παντρευτούν. Έτσι με το όνειρο της οικογένειας που θα δημιουργούσε πήγε και δούλεψε σκληρά στο ορυχείο, στέλνοντας της τα χρήματα που έβγαζε. Όμως κάποια στιγμή ήρθε μια επιστολή από εκείνη, που του έλεγε πως τα λεφτά έχουν φαγωθεί, πως τον χρησιμοποίησε και πως θα παντρευόταν έναν εκατομμυριούχο! Μη μπορώντας να αντιμετωπίσει την αλήθεια, ο Ρικάρντο έθεσε τέλος στη ζωή του.
Για αυτό έρχεται λοιπόν ο Δεμέτριο, για να πάρει εκδίκηση για τον θάνατο του αδερφού του, έχοντας ως στοιχείο από εκείνη τη γυναίκα μόνο ένα μαντίλι με το μονόγραμμα της πάνω, Β, και τη μαρτυρία πως η γυναίκα αυτή ήταν πανέμορφη!
Προσπαθώντας να ανακαλύψει ποια από τις δύο είναι, η Βερόνικα ή η Βιρχίνια, όλα δείχνουν πως η πρώτη είναι αυτή που θα μπορούσε με τον φιλελεύθερο χαρακτήρα της να έχει συνάψει σχέσεις... Παρόλο που η καρδιά του Δεμέτριο του λέει πως δεν μπορεί να είναι αυτή, αφού ξεκινάει να την ερωτεύεται, τυφλωμένος από το μίσος αλλά και από ένα δίχτυ δολοπλοκιών που έχει υφανθεί γύρω της, την παντρεύεται με μόνο σκοπό να την πληγώσει και να την κάνει να πληρώσει! Όμως η Βερόνικα είναι αθώα, και θα παλέψει με όλους για να αποδείξει την τιμιότητα της και να ξεσκεπάσει το ψέμα! Ενάντια στον άνδρα που αγάπησε και την πρόδωσε, στον θείο της που ενώ τη μεγάλωσε από παιδί δεν πίστεψε στην αξιοπρέπεια του χαρακτήρα της, στον Χουάν που ορμώμενος από τη ζήλια του πίστεψε και αυτός σε ψέματα, στη θεία της που ποτέ δεν τη στήριξε όσο έπρεπε και κυρίως στην ίδια την Βιρχίνια, που όπως όλα δείχνουν ήταν εκείνη που μέσα από τον ψεύτικα αθώο χαρακτήρα της έκρυβε μια γυναίκα πρόστυχη και φιλοχρήματη! Θα καταφέρει να συγχωρήσει τον Δεμέτριο και να ζήσουν την ευτυχία που της είχε υποσχεθεί, ή θα κερδίσει η Βιρχίνια το παιχνίδι μέσα από τη σκευωρία που έστησε;
Σας προτείνω να το διαβάσετε αν είστε λάτρης των κλασικών αισθηματικών βιβλίων, με την πλούσια πλοκή αλλά και γραφή! Και αν έχετε δει τη σειρά, ακόμη καλύτερα, γιατί δεν είναι ίδια ακριβώς η πλοκή, έχει πολλές διαφορές με κυριότερη την εποχή και το μέρος που διαδραματίζονται τα γεγονότα, καθώς το βιβλίο είναι εποχής και οι ήρωες του βρίσκονται στη Βραζιλία ενώ η σειρά αναφέρεται στο σύγχρονο(τέλη '90s!) Μεξικό!

Σας προτείνω να το διαβάσετε αν είστε λάτρης των κλασικών αισθηματικών βιβλίων, με την πλούσια πλοκή αλλά και γραφή! Και αν έχετε δει τη σειρά, ακόμη καλύτερα, γιατί δεν είναι ίδια ακριβώς η πλοκή, έχει πολλές διαφορές με κυριότερη την εποχή και το μέρος που διαδραματίζονται τα γεγονότα, καθώς το βιβλίο είναι εποχής και οι ήρωες του βρίσκονται στη Βραζιλία ενώ η σειρά αναφέρεται στο σύγχρονο(τέλη '90s!) Μεξικό!

Book LA MENTIRA was inspired by Shakespeare's OTHELLO among other classics, possibly 1941 Hitchcock movie SUSPICION: both mid-century stories include character named Johnnie--unusual because Adams story originally takes place in Brazil. 1998 telenovela version expands to include MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM type mix-ups & other ways people put on acts, pretend, or tell outright lies on all levels of society, from bank falsely accused of money laundering & law enforcement taking bribes, to "white lies" deception in family life, marriage, between lovers.
Story of 1998 LA MENTIRA shows importance of trust & truth in a healthy community. As with 1994 CAFE CON AROMA DE MUJER, setting moved to Mexico also illustrates Shakespeare quote "All the world's a stage". Besides applying to meta fictional works, in real life the parents of Cuban author Adams were both actors. Eventually realized that emphasis on square window framing was subtle wink at similar shape of a TV or motion picture screen.

Fun & useful book BREAKING OUT OF BEGINNER'S SPANISH by Joseph Keenan also cites some great reasons, and author thanks his little daughter for reminding him that language learning is child's play.
