Evelyn is one girl amidst hundreds of sword wielding, demon fighting, magic casting… boys.
Insecurity and logic have always kept the wild, adventurous spirit of seventeen year old Evelyn Avest stuck in her home town of Tiver. Now, with the Order, an all male fighting league, she finally feels like she’s found her place. If she wants to stay she’ll have to prove her worth as a magic Artisan. The problem is, the only one who can teach her to do that is one particularly infuriating, exasperating, cocky, self absorbed, gorgeous, powerful, hot, well… Jerk. A war is coming, and in the end, the girl who should not be there… will become the only answer.
Actually 1,5 stars because of very poor execution.
Loads of incorrect spelling, missing words and wrong choices of words. For example, instead of the heroine's eyes narrowing, according to the author, SHE narrowed, on numerous occasions. It actually sometimes felt as if the writer was translating in her head from another language. In need of some serious editing.
The dialogue didn't even make sense a lot of the time, the heroine's thoughts were more confusing than I would have thought possible and it's never made clear what time period we are talking about. As for the heroine, I am afraid I'll have to agree with her, I can't understand why anyone would fall in love with her, she isn't very smart, or witty, or courageous, or anything but mediocre.
I’m not sure how I really feel about this book. It’s one of those ones that you love to hate and hate to love. When I first went in I was iffy on everything. But then there was a conversation between Eve, Cornelius, and Ikovos that had me laughing and I started to fall in love.
Everything starts moving along, but a lot of things that happen just seem to be put there to make the book longer. Because of this things started to feel like they were dragging at certain points before everything would pick up and get moving again. I felt this the most when it came to Eve learning magic, it seemed like it would be a big part of the book, I mean it is freaking magic if I could learn it I would be up in everyone’s business all the time until I got taught, but she seemed to forget that she could for a while and then when she finally did learn magic it wasn’t as big a deal as I thought it would be. More like a “oh okay you can do magic now, good for you” feeling. . .I was disappointed. The weapons training part also seemed pointless; she never did anything with it.
Now Eve is probably why I’m waffling back and forth so much about this book. One minute she is amazing and I want to stand behind her and cheer, then the next she can barely get a sentence out and I want to start shaking her, hard. I understand that is just how she is, socially awkward and all that jazz. . .I’m socially awkward but I can still get full sentences out when the need arises, and if I’m with friends forget about it, it’s like all my pent up awkwardness gets thrown at them and I don’t shut up.
The relationship aspect of this book was alright. I liked how it developed over time and there was no intsa-love. I thought a couple of times that there was going to be a love triangle but thank God that didn’t really happen. What I don’t understand is how she could fall in love with the person she did, he was mean, treated her bad and always made it seem like she wasn’t wanted. When the possible other love interest was always there for her, helped her out, and was just an all around nice guy. When love was finally declared it felt forced. . .like really forced, like “we are almost at the end of the book and need some emotional crap thrown in real quick” forced.
So here I sit on the fence because even though I didn’t like a lot about this book I still did really like it, especially in the beginning. When my husband asked if I was reading a good book I practically knocked him over telling him yes. The entire first half of this book is amazing. . .the entire last half no so much. It was still really interesting, just a lot of things made me mad.
Would I recommend this book? Yes, because it was still pretty awesome, and I know the things I didn’t like wouldn’t really bother a lot of other people. I’m just picky.
So awesome. I never get tired of reading books with a strong heroine, and by far this is tied with Strange Angels for first. It was amazing, and once I started reading I couldn't stop. I didnt want it to end, and when it did I was sooooo frustrated that the next one wasnt going to be out soon enough. I loved the whole book and all of the characters, and I cannot wait for Obsidian. I applaud you, Tess Williams, you are an amazing writer.
I just can't finish this book. I had such high hopes for it, but the writing is atrocious. Seriously. Have someone edit your book, authors. Just a few of the mistakes I've found: "I was now somewhat eccentric about staying right next to Jaden." Eccentric? I don't think that word means what you think it means, Tess. There was A LOT of this in the book. The Masters, when mentioned in the plural was Master's. That's a fundamental grammar rule; apostrophes do not make a word plural. Confusing your and you're occurred a ton too. Seriously though. Have someone read the book for you. Put an ad at a local college for english students to read it for you. Heck, I'll read it for you. Terrible writing style ruins the whole book. I want my dollar back.
Like holy crap. My realm of sanity imploded at the pure, (Evelyn's favorite word) MAGIC, of this book. I mean it was like, crazy. I read it and I was like, holy crap DID THAT JUST HAPPEN? Then my concious finds its way back and is screaming, OH YES, YES IT DID. And I was just like *-*. LIke, I'm pretty sure my face is stuck like that. A. M. A. Z. I. N. G.
This novel was really good, don't get me wrong, but there are a few points that I would have changed or gone into more depth. The story begins with a girl named Evelyn who lives in the city of Triver. She is never with her family and often spends time by herself wandering around. One day as she's in the forest, some random guy named Sylvanus comes up to her and says that he can use Magic and for her to follow him (this is the part that really annoys me, does she not have any common sense? She just follows a stranger to his house) but she does and he turns out to be a Meoden, an evil creature and she ends up in another dimension where she gets saved and taken to this lodge filed with boys. There she meets Jaden sand Ikovos.
The story goes on along those lines: she wants to stay and learns to use Magic blah blah blah ... These are some of the things I didn't exactly like:
1) the name: first everyone calls her Eve, then when they figure out her real name they all call her by that, she even makes a comment that she wanted everyone to keep calling her Eve yet she does nothing to change that.
2) Grammar: I usually don't pick up on stuff like this but this time it started to get really annoying. Its not like there was that many grammar mistakes just one in particular that kept on repeating its self. The quotation marks were either facing the wrong way or they weren't there at all! I don't know if it was how it downloaded on my kindle but I just couldn't get over it.
3) Jaden: I think the author was trying to pull off the whole mystery guy thing but it just didn't work. In my perspective he was just a jerk. He's mostly mean towards Evelyn and then you get those very few moments when he's all of a sudden sympathetic. SPOILER: and the part where he tells Evelyn he loves her I was still getting the jerk vibe from him. I really think that part could have gone way smother. I don't blame her that she had a hard time processing this, and I get that Jaden didn't get to spend that much time around girls but seriously like "just because I'm mean to you and never talk to you doesn't mean that I don't love you" what kind of girl is going to take that.
4) Dragging on: maybe I'm just so use to reading fast paced books that this just didn't do it for me. I mean I liked the story line, and all the events that happened, but it seemed to drag on a little. For a 470 paged book I was expecting a lot more action and more adventures, all the situations they were in ended too nicely, I kept on waiting for something unexpected to happen but unfortunately nothing did. I got to the point where when something did happen I was already anticipating and waiting for it to happen, so I didn't feel the full effect of the moment.
5) The ending: this could have been an amazing ending, and in some ways it was, but I just thought it was a little jumbled especially with everything that happened with Jaden moments before. I wasn't feeling the heart wrenching part as much as I could have been. The thing that really annoys me is that the book was going pretty slow and then all of a sudden this ending comes along and I was expecting to have this extravagant end to the book. But it does leave you guessing and wanting more, to know what is to become of Evelyn.
I fell as though I'm making this book sound bad but all these things are very minor and didn't really take away my experience with this novel. Here are some things that made this book worthwhile:
1) The Characters: I absolutely loved some of the characters like Ikovos - he had such a great disposition and he made me smile every time he said something. I was constantly waiting for him to come along again and again; Cornelius - he was like the kind old man but funny sometimes too; and, my favourite character of all is Adzamaruha - he's the crazy wizard, and let me tell you, every book needs an Adzam! I wish this book would have shown more of him but I'm happy with what I got, from purple sheep to potions that make your lips pink, he was the best!
2)Storyline: I loved the storyline with the girl who ends up living with a bunch of boys who are basically training to fight evil forces and with a little Magic mixed in there. It was very entertaining.
3) Tanis: he was like the cutest thing ever, and talk about random pets this little guy was like a miniature squirrel/mouse thing that could fit anywhere. I immediately fell in love with him and when he started to get sick I was so sad but Tanis is a strong little thing and he recovered fast. And not to mention he saved Evelyn's life! It was so cute how he would just hitch a ride on Evelyn without her knowing and then when she felt alone he would just pop out and be like "well I'm here!"
Overall I really did enjoy this book and am definitely going to purchase the second one, even though it had a lot of con's it was all worth it, I am so happy I read this book an it will be on my list of must reads. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful story with us Tess Williams!
I really enjoyed this book. I wanted to give it 5 stars, but there were a few things that bothered me and knocked it down a star. First, as others have noted, there were some grammatical and spelling mistakes. These always bug me, because even if you don't have a professional editor, most are pretty apparent just by reading the book. Second, there were some inconsistencies in the plot and story. There is this big deal about how Eve gets to join the order, and she's the first girl ever to become an artisan, etc., Once she's officially there, however, it's like they don't know what to do with her. Once she joins, she is basically left to her own devices most of the time, and doesn't really seem to be consistently trained or taught to do anything. Since she has zero background in what the order does, you'd think they would at least give her a reading list, or have her join in some of the younger kids' history classes or something. She basically only gets trained in weapons and magic when others are available and feel like teaching her. I get that they are all busy doing important order things, but the attitude is kind of, "I"m busy today, so go help in the kitchen or something." Third, I was really happy the love interest worked out, but I thought it was pretty abrupt. He shows up, mad because she ran off on a quest without telling him, and expects her to have read his mind and know that he was in love with her the entire time. When she points out the fact that he has been mean and rude to her the entire time they've known each other, his reaction is basically, "What's your point?" There's not really a good explanation of why he loves her, how he came to love her, or why he was a jerk to her. Just, "I"m in love with you. Let's be a couple and go save the world." Like I said, abrupt.
That being said, I really did enjoy the story, and would recommend this book to others.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
So, I wasn't all that motivated to start this book, and at first I was really confused because we jumped backwards. But once I got knowledge of my new bookish surroundings, turns out the plot and characters aren't as great as I thought they would be.
I mean, can ANYTHING be more OBVIOUS?!
Seriously, hello?! That romance was so palpable and predictable, why didn't they just run to each other now and save the groans from us?!
And not only that, the plot was as thin as a dental floss, and just as flimsy and stupid, something that could have been better if the author was reminded not to write something to RAVAGE OUR BRAINS.
And when our lovebirds finally come together, of course the gal is all: W-what, me?! The hot, popular, arrogant, good-at-everything, seems-to-hate-me, all-powerful guy loves me?! B-but why?! Oh, how can I confess -
JUST SHUT UP.
Sure, I can handle a little of mushy-mushy love and oblivious girls to obvious reasons. But Evelyn?!
She couldn't pour piss from a boot if the instructions were written on the heel.
This was great. A few editing booboos here and there, but I got over it. It was only $1!! There was very little to no explaining their world, or the time or any of that- I loved it! I know a lot of people would have a serious problem with that- but I think that is why I like it. She just made the world how she liked it. Who cares how or when or why. Roll with it. The boys school angle was fun because it had younger kids instead of just angsty high schoolers. So it had the Harry potter feeling instead of vampire academy- u know?
The dialogue and internal monologue'ing was so funny. Our protagonist was shy, embarrassed easily, but still sassy and capable of laughing at herself. So it was a nice combo- and she wasn't all emo about everything. Praise be. I hate those chicks. "He loves, he hates me, I hate myself" garbage.
There was some set up for the sequel, but not so terribly obvious that u wanted to barf.
This was a great book with an amazing story, but the editing was terrible. Like, to the point of serious distraction. "He perplexed at me"? What? That may not be the exact quote, but it's the general gist of what was said. I'm not sure there's any situation where the word "perplex" can be done AT someone or something. This was just one example, but there were SO many. "He skewered his eyes at me"? GROSS. Who goes around putting their eyes on skewers? None of this means I won't read the second book, however. The storyline is just too darn good.
Overall this was an awesome book. There are some irregularities, like the fact that Eve never says goodbye to her family, she just takes off and we don't hear about them anymore. It's irrelevant to the story, but I feel some ends might have been knit together better.
There are some weird placed commas, and sometimes words are spelled wrong, but overall the story is definitely exciting and entertaining.
The Kindle version of this book had a lot of grammatical errors that were distracting. For example, "He put his arm around my waste," instead of waist. There were also some insconsistencies in the time period - like they ride horses and wear tunics, but there are 10-story tall buildings and continental breakfasts. The storyline is really good though, and I couldn't wait to see what happened. Altogether, if you can get past some errors and inconsistencies, I definitely recommend this book.
So another tome joins the ranks of dnf. Congratulations. This book with its clunky writing, it's annoying POV, the cliche love triangle, the shoddy world building and annoying heroine had me skimming before I'd even struggled to reach chapter 5. It was then my brain gave me an ultimatum. Either the book goes or it's out of here. You win brain!
I loved the Author's Fallen Prince trilogy, so I downloaded this ebook. It was totally amateurish. Anachronistic dialogue. Vague world building. Wimpy heroine. Cliche love triangle. Pages and pages where plot does not move forward.
Avoid this book and read her Fallen Prince series instead.
I met this author through literature sites and was so inspired when I was younger by Tess to continue writing.
Only recently I discovered her passing and I would like to express my wishes and love to her family, Tess was a beautiful writer and the characters she created in this novel brought me a lot of joy.
Evelyn is a great protagonist, she reminds me of that awkward stage of being a teenager and is sympathetic throughout.
Ikovos is my absolute favourite character and he steals the show of the whole book, every scene that he is in is a complete joy to read and his friendship with Evelyn is the best relationship in the book imo.
Can't wait to read the rest of the series, thanks Tess for creating such an amazing work during your time here and you are and always will be an inspiration of mine.
I can't finish this book. The writing is terrible - spelling, grammar, character names etc, etc. Someone needs to buy this author a dictionary or thesaurus at least; e.g. "he had a sword hanging from his 'waste' instead of 'waist'" & "he placed his arm around her 'waste' instead of 'waist.'" Also, "come and 'by' with me." Let's face it - it's abysmal! LEARN to write before you start!
I really really loved the story line! The book itself was amazing. However, the editing could have been better. There were quite a few spelling/word mistakes. But if you can overlook that, it's a great read. The mistakes didn't stop me from falling in love with the characters and the story
For making this a four star. Although the plot was pretty cool, the editing was honestly pretty terrible. So many typos and incorrect word placing, made it kind of difficult to read at times. That was the biggest thing. Apart from that, the main character, Eve, her over the top shyness was so unnerving and uncomfortable at times! It was just way way over the top. I did really like the relationships between the main characters though. I always enjoy it when there is friction between the love interests in the story; makes it so much more enjoyable and real in my book. I can't stand it when the two are practically tripping over each other in love through out the whole book... For some strange reason, It's so much more fun to see them trying to fight their feelings for eachother, lol... And this book definitely had that. Yeah. I definitely give this book a thumps up and encourage people to read it... Just have to over look the typos and awkwardness of some of Eve's interactions. Happy reading!
I wasn't sure what to think about this book. I couldn't figure out how old anyone was, what they looked like, what character personalities were or even what era the book was supposed to take place in. This book lacked character development and descriptions that it desperately needed, while using phrases and descriptions that didn't seem to fit the time period and world the author was trying to build. That being said, it had an interesting plot and while the flow was a little slow in parts it still moved nicely. I struggled to get through it, simply because I could not get lost in the world as I would have preferred. I've heard the authors other series was great so I am eager to start that one, but will probably not return to this series.
This is a great book that I personally could not put down. It is about a girl that stumble upon a hidden magical world that fills her with thrilling adventures. She is sent to a training facility where she is taught sward fighting and magic and also where she falls in love. Did I mention that it is an all boys school. Any way it turns out that when the boys get into a war with evil creatures that surround their world it is up to Eve to stop them.
This is a great book that includes adventure, action, a bit of fantasy, and romance. So almost everything a good book needs! "Ember" would be a read for anyone who just wants to go on an adventure (kind of like Evelyn). Really the only problem in "Ember" was that there were a lot of grammar errors, but can overlooked with some common sense.
The issues with grammer aside, this book was horrible. The main character is Eeyore with her sad attitude and she is incredibly dense. Dense Dense Dense. omg bad. I get that this is a YA book but, really teenagers are this go along to get along. It seemed like this girl had no independent thought. Then the random romance between her and a boy that didn't seem to like her AT ALL! ugh.
ALOT OF GRAMMATICAL ERRORS BUTTTT! Still an amazing story to read. Some of the writing is a little confusing and i had to reread the sentence a couple of times. But I love this story were a new life is presented to Evelyn Avest and she doesn't run from it or try to hide from her destiny. She is willing and waiting and fighting for her chance to be apart of this group.
Took a couple chapters to get into it, the editing in Kindle was awful and the writing didn't grab me. But I'm glad I went back, I really enjoyed the plot, and loved the sequel. I think the author has a lot of potential, and I hear her other series is better. Even so, I can't wait for the third book in this series!
I wasnt very sure about this book, but when i started, i just couldnt put it down, night came, so i need to rest, but when awake, i started again, i really liked it, so... give this book a chance, you wont regret it
The ending was a bit out of the box for me. So Eve just happens to join a guild full of Meoden-fighting magic-casting boys. I thought she would have some sort of extraordinary power as the only girl magician or something, not ending up as a sacrifice. But all-in-all, it was a great book.
