At the base of an old tree sits Arielle and...Chad (much to her parent's dismay). (She's convinced her parents are wrong, the rest of the jury is out).
"They say the tree is haunted."
"I'm not afraid of ghosts."
Unbeknownst to the possible-lovers, the old tree is actually...the hanging tree. The very same from decades ago, where many have lost their lives.
And in the hanging tree perch the very victims of it.
"I don't see anything. What was it?"Told through intermittent flashbacks, we learn of Arielle and Chad's young love and an old wound that curses that very ground to this day.
Together they walked back to their cabin, the cat gracefully leaping over small puddles, the old woman with a rare sense of doom.Overall - I think this one ended up being really good!
When I first learned of the plot - I wasn't sure how it would pan out.
There seemed to be a lot to cram in within just a few short pages - various time lines, overlapping stories and a surprisingly large cast of characters...and yet it worked. Extremely, impressively well.
The story was bare-bones, but in such a way that I was wholly invested in 110% of the content.
I loved learning about how the varying ghosts ended up living in the tree and how their storylines intersected.
Watching the ghosts talk about the various things they could do to Arielle and Chad...spooky!
All in all, this was such a fun read! A highly recommended short story!

Well I'm officially on a Cash kick. This is the second book of his I've finished in two days. I think it's starting to become a problem. Well there are worse addictions. And thankfully he has a large library of books to keep me busy. At this rate I'll have read all his books by next week. Then I'll be miserable and bugging him to write something new. Like I said, this could become a problem.
Okay, how was that for a tangent? I'm good at those. Anyway, The Hanging Tree. Where do I start? Well, I'm not much for synopsizing in my reviews. You can do that on your own. What I am for is praising a story that has beautiful layers, a bit of history and lore, great characters, and some really interesting ideas. The writing doesn't distract, but rather lends a richness to this short, yet compelling read. One line that I related to and read again and again: "Instinctively, she knew somehow they were all protecting her, but from what, she just couldn't remember. It was always to hazy. Just of her reach. Stretching for distant recollections, she only felt loneliness and pain. So much pain, faint memories nagged her."

This story is about magic, witchcraft, and the afterlife. It is well=written, smartly crafted, and ends in a surprising, yet satisfying conclusion.
Reading this book gave me the chills, made me laugh at times, and also made me want to slap one of the characters... repeatedly. I found this story quite interesting and entertaining. I enjoy reading about magic and witchcraft and look forward to reading more from this author.

I must say that I enjoyed reading this book very much. In my opinion, the plot and characters were well-developed and believable considering the length of the story. I give this book an A+! and look forward to reading more from Michael Phillip Cash in the future.

This was a pretty good and fast read. When Arielle and Chad have an argument about their relationship, they disturb the ghostly denizens of the hanging tree who had been hanging around the tree due to a curse that one of them made when they died. So this book tells the stories of how the ghosts in the tree died and of the choices one makes and where it leads others. I enjoyed reading it and hope others will check it out too.

My Thoughts
The Hanging Tree is a novella that centers around a curse that was started in the 1600's and has claimed many victims throughout the years leading up to the present day. That is where the story starts for us; two teenagers left to consider their choices as they progress through the night. These two characters make us believe the story is focused on them but I feel like they are really background noise for the more interesting characters: the spirits that live in the Hanging Tree. Of course this is one of those stories that seem to come full circle and for that it does need the help of Arielle, the female teen there.
I loved the pretense of the story. There are so many major factors that play a part in the story including revenge, love, and forgiveness. And when we combine those emotions with ghosts, curses, and witchcraft it does make for a fun and enticing read!
I think my most enjoyable parts were the histories of the different ghost's pasts, as well as how they ended up in the Hanging Tree. While I understood the necessity of understanding Arielle's life; I truly enjoyed reading about Goody Bennett and Martin and Arthur. I would have liked to have even more of the spirits explained. I really wasn't ready for that area to end. Perhaps, the author could go back and give us some more back stories on other spirits; like prequels. Who knows?
While I praise Cash's imagination in creating the different characters and the plot, I felt like the resolution of the curse could have been more substanstial. I just wanted a little more umph in the ending. Although, I do understand the concept behind the ending and can perceive why Cash chose to use it this way.
I did feel there could have been a tad more editing done before the book was published. There isn't much and I tend not to focus on that area too much. We all make mistakes and if it doesn't take away from the flow of the story I don't want to point out every single detail.
All in all, The Hanging Tree is a short story that has some eerie moments mixed in with lessons to be learned that actually offers up a great intriguing plot. I would love for Mr. Cash to perhaps branch out (no pun intended) and maybe come up with some more of back stories for other inhabitants of the Hanging Tree. I would be first in line for that!

This is a very entertaining book . Based in Oyster bay . Featuring the takes if the Hammonds. The curse they have on them by one act of a insane reverend and the old crone . Meet chad and Arielle . They are dating and chad want to take things to a new level . They are at the legendary hanging tree . Where there are ghosts watching over them . We relive the stories of the ghosts and how the curse started
I lived this novella I am such a sucker for a good ghost story. And local folk lore. The tree that is in the story us still standing today .
Michael writes characters with great detail . He also takes us on a great ride.

His well received second novel, Stillwell- A Haunting on Long Island, has stayed on the top of Amazon's "100 Best Seller" in it's genre since its release earlier this year. He is currently working on another ghost story. He lives on Long Island with his wife and children.
My Review:
Claire knows her grandmother is right. She shouldn't be running around the reverend but he makes her feel like she is only girl in the world. He makes her heart flutter and when she has something special to tell him she is overjoyed. But that may just be the last thing she ever says.
Goodie Bennett sees her granddaughter doing many things that shouldn't be doing,like running around with the Reverend for one. But how can she stop her, she says she is in love but this could be dangerous. Very dangerous. Goodie finds Claire with the reverend one afternoon, but everything is not as it seems.
Arielle feels it's time to bring her relationship to the next level but as soon as she is alone with her boyfriend she quickly changes her mind and apparently her boyfriend doesn't agree. This defiantly isn't like him he is usually sweet and loving, there has to be an explanation, but what?
Peter sits at home steadily checking the clock waiting for his daughter. She still has time to get home but that movie should have already ended. He can't help but call her and when she doesn't answer, he goes to find her. Maybe not in the best light, and when he sees the boy he's done told her to get rid of, it sets him off.
Just a little bit of a note, this book does contain some strong language content but otherwise an interesting book.

Generally I don't review horror based genres but I must say that lately I have been enjoying this authors writing style. So far this is the third book that I have reviewed for him and so far I have enjoyed each and every book. To see if you would enjoy this horror novel keep on reading for what I liked and didn't like about The Hanging Tree.
Pros:
I guess I'll just dive right into it. This book was different compared to others that I have read, and frankly the synopsis does not give this book the credit it deserves. I sincerely enjoyed this book, all 74 pages of it. The story had quite a bit of mystery to it, I had no idea what was going to happen and frankly the build up was getting to me till finally it all made sense to me by the end. I like the characters, all of them, though there were so many of them I was a little confused on who was who, but that confusion didn't last long as I was starting to get an idea of what was going on.
Now as for "the synopsis not describing this book the way it deserves to be," I have to say this book wasn't what I was expecting. I though I was getting a horror book about a teenage girl and frankly I wasn't excited to read it but after reading the book it was a lot better then I expected. Instead of one main story you got about 3 mini stories because you get to see the "behind" storied of each of the ghosts as Arielle's story is being unfolded which was really awesome. So to me personally, this book is a winner.

Now even though this book is a winner for me I will talk about a few things that annoyed me. The author was kind enough to send me a printed copy of this book which I really appreciate because I like paperbacks better then the countless digital formats that are available, but as I'm reading through the book I realize that somehow something messed up because there's an extra space between all the paragraphs which sometimes messed me up because for most books when that happens, the author is taking the reader to a different "time" or character but this is not the case for this book. But after a few chapters I was able to get the hang of it so this wasn't a huge con for me.
Another thing that annoyed me was the beginning. I was confused because I had no idea where this book was taking me, and I continued to being a little confused because of all of the different background stories, but even though it took a little bit of time I was able to figure things out, so the book was enjoyable in the end.
Ok Spoiler Ahead:
The one thing that really bothered me was the relationship between Arielle and her boyfriend Chad. Chad is an asshole, and frankly a prissy little snot. Due to the "curse" going on, Chad was assaulting Arielle in the book but it didn't go to far thank goodness and afterwards he was really embarrassed and they made up, but were just going to stay friends. Sure, it was the "curses" fault but frankly I wished that scene never happened because I can't read threw those scenes. Luckily the author didn't get to into it and nothing "really bad" happen but I can't read those scenes and Chad deserves a good beating in my opinion. Just so he "really" learns his lesson.
So in conclusion I liked this book, it's a winner for sure and I'll be rereading it in the future. I really hope the author will write another book like The Hanging Tree because out of all the books he has written this is by far my favorite book by Michael Phillip Cash.

Michael Phillip Cash remains on the top of the heap
Some author's rather early on find their niche in the literary output - a sector of interest that appeals to a given audience but also allows a writer to grow into his skin - much like the output of John Grisham, Scott Turow, Michael Ondaatje, Patricia Highsmith who focus on a theme and explore it in many ways.
Michael Phillip Cash seems to be consistent in his choice of themes: his prior `Brood X - A Firsthand Account of the Cicada Invasion' and `Stillwell - A Haunting on Long Island' embrace the fantasy cum horror cum `strange beasties in the night' ideas. And so it is with his most recent novel, `The Hanging Tree'. He knows just how much of the `thee/thou' dialogue to insert without becoming precious, and the fact that he uses vey contemporary slang for Chad and Arielle show the river of linguistic changes through the years quite well.
Polished, involving, challenging, and engrossing, The Hanging Tree may be a brief novella but it has staying power.

Michael Phillip Cash seems to be consistent in his choice of themes: his prior `Brood X - A Firsthand Account of the Cicada Invasion' and `Stillwell - A Haunting on Long Island' embrace the fantasy cum horror cum `strange beasties in the night' ideas. I am quite hooked on Mr. Cash's books, Brood X and Stillwell . Now he's done it again. THE HANGING TREE is his first Novella. You just know after reading the other two books that this is going to be another great read. It was different than the other two but it was still holding you from the moment you opened the book until the very end. I didn't expect anything else from Mr. Cash except a gripping thriller. The story takes place on Long Island, that is known for hauntings and legends.
Two young teenagers, Arielle, who is 17 years old and very unhappy with her father. She is with Chad and are making out under an old tree everyone calls "the hanging tree". Chad is wanting Arielle to go in a direction that she isn't sure she wants to go. She has to make a choice. There is a Harmond family curse, placed by a witch centuries ago for wrong doings that has been carried through the generations. Mr. Cash did an interesting way of weaving five spirits from the past into the story, who are watching everything as it happens. The spirits start telling of their tragic encounters at "the hanging tree". Their stories and their deaths are all wrapped around "the hanging tree" and it's curse.
Will the curse happen again with Arielle and Chad? Can the curse be broken and if so, how? Whatever choices Arielle makes are hers and so are the consequences. This is true for all of us. We live with our choices. The story is a short read with lots of descriptions. It is definitely a page turner and a little gripping. A few times I found myself getting a little rigid. That's a sign to me that the book is definitely a keeper. Mr. Cash, we're all waiting anxiously for the next one.
I would give this book 5 Hanging Trees.

Technically a 3.5 star, but worthy of rounding up.
When I read the premise of The Hanging Tree by author Phillip Michael Cash I thought it was a rather intriguing idea. I was not wrong. The idea behind the hanging tree and the reason people say it is haunted is wonderful. I loved that history from the tree's past is threaded into the present and what is happening in the now. We are introduced to various characters of whom we learn about their stories and ultimate deaths and how they all are linked to The Hanging Tree and its curse.
Now, while I thoroughly enjoyed the core elements and characters of this story, I did have some issues. Mainly I felt that, while the interweaved past/present tales were relevant and enjoyable to read, they were somewhat disjointed in the way they came together. I also felt that a little more expansion into the life of our main characters could have aided in a bit more caring and understanding from this reader. I know it is a novella, but I truly feel that it time had allowed this would have been even better lengthened a bit. Not necessarily a full novel length as I think that would push it a bit, but definitely a longer novella.
Please do not get me wrong, my nitpicks while there and, I feel, are valid to me as a reader are not to be taken as do not read this book. Merely as an acknowledgement that I felt there could have been a bit more to flesh things out

In a break from his full size novels, Michael Phillip Cash has done it again with a new novella that he has just released this week. The short story called, The Hanging Tree is everything you would expect from a thriller writer. Intrigue, mystery, ghostly presence, it's all there.
The story begins to unfolds in present time with two young teens, Arielle and Chad, who are making out under an old tree dubbed, "the hanging tree". Chad is pushing Arielle in a direction that she may not want to go and it is now a make it or break it decision.
Intertwined within, are five spirits from the past who are watching the whole thing unfold. They begin to tell their tragic tales of being at this very same tree and what it meant for them. Their stories are eerily familiar and all their deaths are based on a curse that be felled them.
Can this curse be broken in time so no harm comes to Arielle or Chad?
Ah, but if I told you, my dear readers, then that would give away the twisted makings of this tale.
I read this in about an hour and half to two hours. It really is packed full of imagery considering the shortness of the book. It's well worth the time and just perfect for the Halloween season upon us.

Crossroads of decision, that's what makes life what it is.
I read "The Hanging Tree" with interest and delight. The beginning of the tale is the too familiar situation, where one person does not respect the safe space of another. At 17, Arielle is the top of Chad's desires. "He knew what he wanted, and was getting impatient waiting for Arielle to make up her mind. She had teased him for so long. Though he was confident, Chad felt jumpy, his hands fidgety. She was beautiful, the star shine and moonbeams painting her lightly freckled cheekbones. She had a perfect nose that complimented a full mouth; he was the envy of all his friends." Arielle is being pushed by Chad to an undesired situation - he wants to take her but he is not sensitive enough to what is right for her. The negative energy of this event raises the death related stored memories of the spirits that are attached to the hanging tree by a curse. Many people believe that forces of "the other world" may doom a person's life without a choice. Will that be the case of Arielle and Chad? Read "The hanging tree" to know.
Michael Cash did a wonderful job of blending the importance of decision making and reality of life with the imaginary and unknown. The book is thrilling, well written and flowing. I loved the dialogs and the language.

"Entertaining Ghost Story"
This is a very suitable story for young adults to read. It encompasses teenagers of today and also ghosts from colonial days; a bit of history to be learned by all. The story takes place in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, where Arielle and 18 year old Chad are on a date at a local park. After dating for six months, Chad is hoping to progress their relationship a little further than Arielle wishes. Arielle's family is broken, she and her sister, Charity, live with their father who is upset with Arielle's choice of boyfriend. This evening, doesn't look promising for Chad, but Arielle moves to a very old, very large oak tree to attempt carving their initials in the tough bark. As she does, the branches of the tree shake as the ghosts of the past above amongst the branches start laughing. The author takes one back to the 1600s sharing some of the history of the ghosts who are primarily, Martin, Goody Bennett, Artie, and the Gibson Girl. Goody has dwelled in the three for 370 years. This is a very creative story, one that is very well written for young adults from which some lessons can be learned. The pace moves right along, the plot development is good, it's certainly potent and entertaining. It's a novella and can be read in one evening. Give it a try!

I would have to consider myself a Cash fan. I adored Brood X. Stillwell was a little predictable for me, but I still enjoyed it. I was really anxious to find out how I'd feel about this one. Would I find it predictable or would I find it the fascinating read of Brood X?
I was pleasantly surprised. Though it didn't have the gruesome scenes I loved about Cash's work, it was still gripping. The over all story was predictable, but written in such a way that I just didn't care. The characters are easy to identify with and you find yourself sucked in immediately. Goody Bennett in herself is a fascinating character study. I'm hoping Cash goes back and writes a book just about her.
You'll find yourself stuck in several different time periods, with all of the characters from the hanging tree. Each has his own story to tell and you'll want to hungrily lap it up until you've heard them all. Though it's a novella, which for me means a quick read, it was a wonderful escape from reality and a great way to pass the time.

I was contacted about the possibility of reviewing this book and though I have a HUGE back log of reviews and review books to do, I loved the synopsis so much that I said yes. It arrived this morning and, well. I've finished it.
I haven't read many novellas before so I was surprised that the story kicked in immediately and was none stop until the very last word. The story is told from a few different perspectives which added to the suspense of the story and it pushed me to read quicker. The Hanging Tree was suitable creepy in places and I loved that even though the story was constantly moving forward, nothing was revealed until the end. It was great to see how all of the characters and their stories were woven together.
The Hanging Tree is less than a hundred pages long but it is packed full of intrigue and suspense. There is definitely enough material here for a full length book but I loved that it was such a quick and wonderful read! Cash is an author to look out for. He currently has two full length novels available and I hope to be able to check them out in the future!

The story starts with Arielle and Chad under the “Hanging Tree” in the evening. Chad is pushing Arielle to have sex with him and she is hesitant. Arielle has had a rough home life recently with the loss of her mother and her father finding someone else to be with. So, she is trying to fight his control by going out with Chad.
But this is no ordinary tree. In it are ghosts from several generations that have been trapped by a witch that was killed on the same spot years prior. Goodie Bennett was assumed to be a witch during the puritan times because of her knowledge. He son died and she is supposed to take care of her grand daughter. But the grand daughter has fallen in love with the preacher and is trying to set Goodie Bennett up to be tested as a witch. This has lasting effects throughout time.
This is a good concept for a story. A woman is accused of being a witch for her knowledge and vows revenge. I liked how you got a teaser about the other souls in the tree. The one thing that got to me was how the story jumps around. It took me a little bit to figure out what was going on and when that part of the story was taking place.
I did like the story. It’s a quick little thriller. This is one that I recommend others read. You might like it too.

While the teens face difficult decisions, the ghosts talk about their own lives and perils, and the reader finds out more about the origins of the tree, and the specters.
The ghost’s stories were a tad predictable, but at least they were more original than the overall premise. The old woman was my favorite ghost. She had an intriguing story to tell, and she had a fiesty personality. I enjoyed finding out more about the tree, and only figured out why the tree was cursed toward the end, although the reason was not very surprising.

I was asked by an agent to review Michael Phillip Cash’s novella The Hanging Tree. I received a paper back copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Hanging Tree is a wonderful paranormal story about a teenage couple exploring the boundaries of their sexuality under an old tree haunted by five ghosts. The ghosts are different generations of the same family and are bound to the tree by an ancient curse conjured up by the oldest ghost who was hanged as a suspected witch over 300 years ago.
Cash expertly weaves the old with the new while showing that most problems we humans face are universal through the ages. The cast of characters is colorful and interesting and believable.
Cash has a crisp, descriptive style, and writes fine dialogue. The ghouls are not too scary or gruesome, and the story lines converge to a flawless, exciting ending.
I can recommend this novella to anyone. The story is clever and rich and deserves five stars.

In Oyster Bay there is a huge old tree known as the hanging tree. Many haunted this old tree and welcomed new people when they came to the other side. From 1649 to 2013 strange occurrences happened near this tree. Some say it's bewitched. Some say it's just a legend. You decide.
Eerie, mind blowing and terrific, this book is one to read! It's written in such a style you'll learn all about the tree and it's "family". I found each story to be sad and tragic, but couldn't understand why these people were treated as badly as they were. Mr. Cash pulls you in and keeps you right in your seat until you are finished.
I found no issues.

Arielle's relationship with her father is not good. The only other person that she can turn to is Chad. Chad and Arielle meet under the Hanging Tree. There are various spirits from various centuries connected to this tree. The spirits are imprisoned to this tree by a curse. The spirits are watching the situation between Arielle and Chad escalate. Chad has one thing on his mind and Arielle is not sure about it. Can the curse be broken and set the spirits free. This novella was a quick and enjoyable read.

Don't let the length of this novella fool you. Michael Phillip Cash is able to pack a big punch into a short amount of pages. Successfully blending the tragic stories of the five spirits bound to the hanging tree with the current story of Arielle and her struggle to be true to herself (or punish her father), Cash does not disappoint.
With a surprise ending that I didn't expect but totally made sense, this was a complete joy to read. A great Halloween pick for young adults and adults alike.

I really enjoyed this book, it was easy to read, but still contained an intriguing story.
The book is about an ancient curse that ties five spirits and a modern couple to a tree called "The Hanging Tree". The story is loosely based off of an actual tree that is located on the North Shore of Long Island. Each chapter tends to be focused on one of the spirits or living character and it was easy to keep up with who was the main focus without getting lost.
This is a great book for anyone who tends to like creepy stories. A must read!

This was a wonderful little novella! I'm not sure what to categorize it as but I can say that I didn't find it to fit well under the genre of horror either. It's a delightful story about a witch and her black cat and the curse she casts upon the man (and his descendants) who cross her. I don't want to spoil anything but I will say that this was an original and imaginative piece with bits of humor sprinkled in; well worth the read. And the next time you think a black cat crossing your path is a bad omen - think again.

The Hanging Tree is a quick read and both Young Adults and older adults alike will enjoy this ghost story. Seventeen year old Arielle meets her boyfriend beneath the infamous hanging tree where there are five spirits in the tree. The young couple are unaware of the five spirits and have no clue that their lives could possibly come to an end. Arielle has choices to make which will determine what happens. This is an intriguing read and I couldn't put it down until I found out what would happen.

This is the second book I've read by Michael Phillip Cash, the first being Stillwell. This short novella drew me in quickly, with the background on the various characters and the reasons they are all tied together. It's written with great imagery, especially the parts about Goody Bennett, and I wish more of the book had been about her. The ending comes as a surprise, but left me thinking "of course! Now it all makes sense!"
At 90 pages, it's a fast read, but one I really enjoyed. I was sent a complimentary copy of The Hanging Tree in exchange for writing an honest review.

Author Michael Phillip Cash seems to enjoy adding some ghostly character to his books. And I usually enjoy them. This novella pushes that characteristic of his to the top and it has a wonderful result. The two living characters, Arielle and Chad, are teenagers that have met under the hanging tree. Arielle’s father is not happy with her seeing this older boy and he does not approve. She is at a hard point in her life and searching for a way to be accepted and maybe at the same time stick it to her dad. Her parents have divorced and she and her sister are living with their father. He had always been the one to be there for the girls. Now, however, he has a girlfriend and she is taking up some of their precious time. Chad is pressuring Arielle into doing something she is not ready for and unsure of how to handle.
The hanging tree is inhabited by ghosts whose lives and/or deaths are somehow connected to the tree. These ghosts are from a huge span of time, from varying lifestyles and different ages. The spirits in the tree are however, keeping an eye on the going ons that happen underneath. As I started reading this book, I thought the main characters would be the two teens. I was surprised and happy to realize the ghosts play a huge part of the story. As the ghosts relate their tales of how they came there, one thing is clear. There was a curse on them all that tied them to the tree and Arielle and Chad are also descendants.
The stories related by the ghosts are entertaining and well written. The tie in to the teens is well done. As a novella, Mr. Cash has fit in a wonderful and complete tale that intrigues and entertains. He dips his story in relationships, family, pain, hypocrisy, love and so much more. I was amazed at how much was fit into this tiny book. This is not really a horror story as far as I can see. It is more a story that stimulates thought and feeling that happens to have ghosts as some of the main characters.

Very creative and entertaining!!!
An awesome young adult short story. *There is some reference to sex and sexual advances, but nothing graphic or detailed *
I have never been one for short stories, but this was a pleasant surprise. The stories of the ghost in The Hanging Tree each made for a wonderful and suspenseful tale of their past and left me wanting to know how they all tied together and what that meant for Chad and Arielle who were presently at the tree.
This short story read much like an old scary story that you would tell late night around the campfire (in fact that may be exactly what we use it for). Mr. Cash is extremely talented in character writing, in each of his novels that I have read, he does an exquisite job at making the character relatable, seemingly like the kids next door.
There are are only two reasons why I could not give this one a full five stars... Number 1- there were a few errors grammatically and just a few missing words (pg 31"Chad said as pulled Arielle closer) and especially in Goody's story (and yes I realize the story of the ghost and when they spoke it was from a time long ago) the writing seemed choppy and in some places the grammar made it hard for me to read.

#2- the ending..., one if kids knew they were related these days would they really date, especially having the same last name at the same school? And in the end it all wrapped up a bit to nicely. Also Arielle forgave Chad too easily. What girl would do that?!!
