The new and unusual case for Detectives Brock and Poole - One Saturday night, a masked gunman walks into a jazz club and murders the drummer. Very soon, Detective Chief Inspector Brock and Detective Sergeant Poole find themselves taking an interest in the guests at a party in Surrey's stockbroker belt, which leads them to look again at a five-year-old robbery and to interview a dozen or so armed robbers. The killer is eventually arrested, but not before numerous extra-marital affairs come to light and a bullion van is attacked . . .
During Graham Ison's thirty-year career in Scotland Yard's Special Branch he was involved in several espionage cases and the investigation into the escape of the spy George Blake. He spent four years at 10 Downing Street as Protection Officer to two Prime Ministers and also served as second-in-command of the Diplomatic Protection Group.
This is an entertaining tale, surrounding the murder of a drummer in a jazz band. Brock and Poole have a number of suspects to work through, but seem to be drawing a blank as the gang that the victim 'grassed' are still all in prison.
Then the manager of the club is also shot, and they have to use some solid police work to find the culprit.
This author writes very soundly about police procedure and this modern day series is almost as thrilling as the 'Hardcastle' series set post WW1.
It all started with a new part-time drummer with a local band getting shot by a masked man in the middle of a set in a crowded upscale venue. Then it turned into an old case with a stoolie who turned in evidence against his cronies. AND THEN there's the attempted heist of bullion from a bank, and more. Very enjoyable. Narration by Damian Lynch was very Jack Webb/Joe Friday, and that's a good thing!
