What if there was a drug that could cure what ails you? Cancer? Diabetes? Alzheimer's? What if that drug wasn't FDA approved, yet in human clinical trials it was showing a 100% success rate? How far would you be willing to go to obtain it? What price would you be willing to pay?

In the latest medical suspense thriller, The RX Factor, takes the reader on an interesting journey between the world of the pharmaceutical business and those patients that are willing to risk anything to obtain the cure. But what it the "cure" wasn't really a cure after all but a way for the drug companies to make a huge profit at the risk of human lives? What if someone knew what they were doing and threatened to expose them? What if the government was involved in the biggest conspiracy to hit the medical community?

This is just some of what you will uncover as you meet Ryan Matthews, former FBI agent and biotech researcher who gets involved with Jordan Carver, a fellow cancer research scientist whose company is under the microscope for a corporate buyout. Because Jordan is willing to offer the success at a cure for far less than the larger drug companies, they want her silenced at any cost. So when the yacht she is staying on with her Aunt and Uncle is suddenly blown up moments before she is expected to arrive, it suddenly interests the local police into the investigation.

Ryan Matthews is attempting to start over again after losing his wife and children in a plane accident. Once at the top of his game, he had invented what he had hoped would be the cure for cervical and ovarian cancer. His motivation came from his wife, who was diagnosed with the disease and had only a couple of years to live. However when he learned that the vaccine was causing the cancer to grow instead of cure, he gave up all hope for healing his wife.

Now it seems that Ryan's previous drug being marketed under a new name is being sold to third world countries as a way to offer a cure that the FDA isn't willing to invest anymore interest in and the price tag for a possible cure is listed at $5 million dollars. Now it's up to Jordan and Ryan to try and solve whether a cure does in fact exist or are the drug companies merely a front for a bigger problem.

Ryan Matthews is a man living with grief after the death of his wife and his children in J. Thomas Shaw's fictional thriller THE RX FACTOR. Fleeing his disrupted life, he encounters Dr. Jordan Carver who is going to open a clinic that more adequately meets the needs of patients as opposed to clinics in America. Like Ryan, Jordan's life is turned upside down when she loses her uncle and her aunt in an explosion.
They join forces to discover what is going on and uncover a conspiracy deep in the federal government. I'll give you a hint -- cancer and drug cover-ups. Deeply engrained throughout the book is the thought that maybe there are drugs that can cure certain diseases, such as cancer. I think there is a cure for Type 1 diabetes out there, but the pharmaceutical companies make far too much money off of insulin to allow it to come out. Guess what? I'm not the only Type 1 diabetic to believe that.
But, back to the novel. This book kept me on the edge of my seat! I had to know more! That may be due to the fact that I really do not like our current healthcare system and believe it is filthy with corruption and greed. If you share the same views, read this gripper! If not, read it anyway because it is beyond entertaining!
Shaw does a wonderful job with character development. He creates everyone in a way that you believe their actions and their words. And you can relate to them. You understand exactly what they are feeling and what they are going through.
But, it's the pace that gets you. It starts off a little slow. There is an actual news article to set the tone in the prologue. And, of course, it's about drug trials that were not successful. But, trust me, the pace quickens rapidly, revealing onion layers of secrets and corruption.
If you start this book, you want to read through to the very end. DO NOT MISS THE END!!! It will blow you away!
This book has the intrigue of THE DA VINCI CODE and is just as well written, if not better. I do not normally put books on my favorite list, but this one just made the cut! Three cheers for Shaw! HIP, HIP . . .
So, as I guess you can imagine, 5 out of 5 stars.

If you follow my review, you know that I don't normally give books in this genre (political thrillers, espionage, etc.) five-star ratings. But J. Thomas Shaw has crafted a story that just blew me away. Towards the end of the book, all I found myself saying is that I hoped this story wasn't really true. Okay, so the story is fiction, but it is clear that there are similar stories, and J. Thomas Shaw has evidence to back his claims. He even cites references at the end of his book (I don't often see fiction writers do that unless it is historical fiction).

I appreciated the fact that the sex scenes were not descriptive, and the profanity was not completely rampant as it is with some of the books in this genre. In fact, I remarked to my mom that normally only the "bad guys" used profanity. When it is used in other settings in the book, it actually makes sense. Not that I condone it, but it is realistic.

I was absolutely floored when I reached the last few pages! I do not want to give anything away, but if you choose to read this book, you MUST read through the end. There can be nothing more gripping than the issues of cancer, drug company cover-ups, and political intrigue. The characters in the book are well-developed, and the writing style is quite readable.

In conclusion, if you choose to read only one political thriller, make it this book. I can assure you that you will marvel at what you are reading, and I think you may look at the news headlines just a little bit differently. I know I will!

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated in any way, and all opinions are one hundred percent mine.

When I first received The RX Factor by J. Thomas Shaw, I wasn't completely sure if I would enjoy it. Boy, was I wrong! Shaw's writing had me hooked by chapter two! The writing in this book is wonderful - very detailed and vivid! And the story could almost be a true one! It's that believable!

The RX Factor takes you on a wild ride from the Bahamas, Chicago, North Carolina, Puerto Vallarta, and you end up in Washington DC. You learn about Ryan Matthews, who, 5 years earlier, lost his wife and children in a tragic plane accident after his wife had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Ryan was a cancer researched and he thought he had come up with a cure for his wife's cancer, but it ended up only accelerating her cancer, unfortunately. Ryan stays in the Bahamas while he's in a deep depression because of the loss of his family, and meets Jordan Carver, who you end up finding out is a FDA researcher as well, and is planning on opening up a clinic in Mexico that will give patients affordable treatment of experimental drugs that they cannot receive in the United States since they are not FDA approved.

I definitely do not want to give the rest of the book away because there's so many twists and turns, but it is one of the best suspense novels I have read in awhile! It definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat and you will not want to put the book down! Every night I read it, I ended up staying up until 2am because I just couldn't put it down! If you enjoy a good suspense novel, I definitely recommend The RX Factor! I would love to see this book possibly made into a movie - there's so much action in it!

When the main character, Ryan, realizes his wife has cancer, he personally gets her in a clinical trial for a cancer drug that he has created himself. As the family struggled with this diagnosis and waited to hear the results, the story started throwing it's blanket of deception over me. The results from the test say his wife, Cindy, is not cured at all and no progress was made in the clinical trial. As a family they wanted to spend as much time left that Cindy has and began the journey to the Bahamas. A main plot of the story begins when the plane crashes and his entire family is gone in a blink of an eye. Dr. Ryan literally began to swallow his grief and resentment in alcohol all day long in the Bahamas. At this time a shining star walked into his life, Jordan. They begin to talk and realize she is a researcher as well, which starts to pull him out of his grief stricken life. Although he does not really believe she will be successful in bypassing the FDA, he admires her courage. As these two travel though movie style action sequences, we are left with many questions. The author, Mr. Shaw, completely summed up one of the main questions people have into an action packed novel : "Why can't Cancer be cured?"

When I picked up The Rx Factor I wasn't sure if I would be interested in it at all. Wow, was I wrong. I couldn't put it down! The Rx Factor is better than watching a movie. Just do yourself a favor and clear your schedule for reading.........because you won't want to do anything else while this book is in your house. It was one of those books that kept me guessing the entire time. I really liked the characters and the surprise twists throughout the book. It can be difficult to keep up because the locations and character list changes at a dizzying pace. I had to stop a few times and thumb back through the pages to remember who someone was. Upon first glance, you might think it's just another conspiracy theory book. Don't judge it so quickly, though, because The Rx Factor is so much more than the typical espionage novel. This book hits frighteningly close to reality and made me wonder how much of it could possibly be true.

I received a copy of this book to review. These opinions are 100% mine. I loved this book!

Great debut thriller from J. Thomas Shaw. I can definitely picture a novel like this as a movie, as it has well developed characters, action, suspense plus plot twists and turns. I was impressed by the detail he gives of all the different cities featured in the book. At the end it sounds like protagonist Ryan has more research he needs to do...is this a series in the making???

This is a work of fiction but it could happen (maybe already does happen). Fast paced, lots of action, political intrigue, corporate intrigue, surprising twist at the end and only a smidge of romance. I recommend for those who enjoy thrillers.

If you like the types of books that grab you from the first page and keep your heart racing all the way until the end, then you will most definitely love this book! I do love those books, of course, and this rates up there with the best!
I also enjoy Government conspiracy and well, real true Government thrillers. Fortunately, I believe more people are really aware of what goes on behind the scenes and J. Thomas Shaw, does an exceptional job at this type of suspenseful, and pretty creepy, storytelling.
The characters are well thought out, and introduced quite well, and I do adore his writing style, action packed, thrilling, and just all in all, great story line.
Dr. Ryan Matthews, loses his family after his cancer cure that he co develops, backfires and ends up speeding the disease's progression and takes his wife's life. Of course this is devastating, and he takes a 5 year plunge as an escape.
He meets a new friend, Jordan Carver M.D, who has a plan to open a medical clinic that will help treat terminally ill cancer patients. Oh, wait, it gets much better!
There are other medical clinics that treat terminally ill cancer patients, but what is so odd and yet strangely familiar, is that these "clinics" are using a drug that is eerily close to the cancer treatment that Dr. Ryan Matthews helped create, that ended up killing his wife and causing all trials to halt completely.
The FDA has apparently allowed the drug to be used in Mexico, in these so called clinics that cancer patients come to with hopes for a last resort. Very creepy, and yet, so realistic.
Ryan, and his new friend and fellow researcher, end up jumping into probably the most wild and crazy ride of their lives, when they take it upon themselves to research and investigate what exactly is going on in these "clinics", what is the FDA doing? and most importantly, what is The United States Government doing? Why is this even being done? They are fully aware of the outcome, it really makes you think of all of the strangeness we hear throughout the years, medical trials, clinics, our military, what is being experimented with and who is it being experimented on??
The RX Factor, will keep you at the edge of your seat,(kind of like a Die Hard movie) and questioning everything, even in real life. If you didn't already wonder about what, how, where and why, our Government does what it does, you certainly will after you read this book!
The whole concept and reasoning behind what is happening is enough to send shivers through your body, and you will second guess most everything after this book, (again, if you haven't already!)
The ending is well laid out, horrifying, and pretty gruesome. As a whole, I would recommend this book to everybody. maybe it will wake some people up as well.
Why did I take away 1 star if I loved it so much?
I did like the ending, I believe it was the perfect ending to the terror. I did think it was an easy ending to figure out, although, I'm not sure how else it would have ended, since any other way would have possibly taken from the intent.
I also think this is a fairly original story, although, I have seen and read this "type" before, and I have to say, again, the author's intent was clearly to write a book about exactly what he wrote about and he didn't take from anything that I am aware of. Nonetheless, that is my reasoning behind a 4 star, rather then a 5 star rating.

This book is full of thrilling action, intrigue, scandal, espionage, murder, mystery, suspense, passion, and more! The thrill ride never stops!
Who is involved? Pharmaceutical company big shots, the FDA, the FBI, the CIA, the Mob, hired Assassins, and more!
How does this story start? Ryan Matthews, (one of two main characters in this story), is a former cancer researcher who developed a medication along with a colleague of his that he was positive could cure ovarian cancer. It just so happened at the same time his wife was battling from this very same deadly disease. He was so sure and believed in this drug so much that he was willing to do anything to save her life with it. This drug trials end up failing (conspiracy theory?) as they learn it actually accelerated the growth of this disease. All trials of this hazardous drug are halted completely, as well as his wife's life.
Now, about five years later, Ryan learns about Jordan Carver, M.D., (the second main character). She is planning to open an 'affordable' medical clinic in Mexico to treat terminal cancer patients as these other medical clinics who claim to cure this cancer are really crooks disguised in lush, exotic, vacation-type resort setting hospitals who are charging these cancer cure-seeking patients about five million dollars for a four month treatment plan using a drug they claim will cure their ovarian cancer. These desperate people fall victim to them.
When Ryan learns of this, and of this miracle 'drug' they supposedly possess, it piques his interest because this drug sounds exactly like the drug he created which did not cure his wife, but did the opposite. If what Ryan thinks is true, this clinic is ensuring an expensive death sentence upon unknowing innocent victims. Ryan and Jordan are livid. Why would the FDA even allow this drug to still be available? Why was it being made available to the clinics in Mexico?
This spurs Ryan and Jordan to go undercover on a quest to get inside one of these particular hospitals to find out more information about the drug this hospital is using. They risk their own lives to get as much information as they can. With some brilliant moves and thoughtful actions, they succeed in getting what they need, and ship this information to where they need it to go to further investigate it, among other things. However, their plans do not end up working to their advantage, and now they are on a thrill ride no one wants to be on, risking their lives just to get to safety alone. Thus starts a cycle of dodging bullets, exploding vehicles, being followed and so much more packed into this fascinating thrill ride. This is just the beginning.
They continue on . . .
I thoroughly LOVED this book!

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It isn't generally the type of plot lines I usually read, but it kept me hooked until the end. The political intrigue is set from the start. We get actual news articles about drug trials gone bad in the prologue. The scene being set, I knew I was in for a journey filled with power struggles and cover ups.

The RX Factor is well written. Perhaps helped along by a similar series of events that happened with an ulcer cure, but in the end the United States government is viewed as a bit corrupt when it comes to corporations willing to pay for their desired outcomes. So, we learn with Ryan and Jordan about the ins and outs of drug trials and why a particular drug may be blacklisted by the FDA.
Like the bureaucracy of government, the plot of this book has layers of truth. Each time a new fact is revealed it paves the way for more information to be uncovered. In the end, these truths allow for some shocking twists as our characters try to survive while hoping to save the lives of others.
Ryan is a medical researcher down on his luck and taken to the bottle for comfort. He meets Jordan after her aunt and uncle are killed (within the first few pages so it's not a spoiler). They both want answers when it is deemed not to have been a mere accident. The race begins to find answers and prevent more deaths as Jordan wants to open a clinic that will help people receive a cure for various terminal illnesses. Only it seems that Jordan may be challenging the wrong group of people.
Even more surprisingly, my Mom actually loved this book. She devours mysteries and thrillers, but is extremely critical. She's hard to win over and I have to agree with her that the plot unfolded at a wonderful pace to keep the reader hooked. We get just the right amount of information to keep us interested and reading until the final sentence.

So, if you also enjoy reading James Patterson, John Grisham, Jeffery Deaver, Tess Gerritsen, or Lincoln Child then chances are you will probably enjoy this book!
Honestly, I enjoyed the ending. Political thrillers usually end with some unsavory business and this one was not too far off the mark. There is a good amount of arm twisting and death threats to keep us alert. Along with our main characters we're not surely exactly who we can trust and who might get killed by the bad guys. When a book starts off with murder, you know you're in for a twisting narrative as we try to solve the puzzle before the bad guys catch up with us.

Ever wonder if the amount that you are paying at the drugstore for your medications is actually 200% or more above the wholesale price? If you are like me you wonder that every time you pay for one of your prescription. Well, I just have gotten through reading an amazing work of fiction called The Rx Factor. This book is written by J. Thomas Shaw.
Here is a brief summary of the bookFive years after the death of his wife and children, Ryan Matthews is living alone with memories of his failed career in cancer research when fellow scientist Jordan Carver catches his eye. Preparing for a move to Mexico, Jordan plans to open a clinic where terminal patients will have affordable access to experimental medication. Despite Ryan's skepticism on her willingness to bypass the FDA drug approval process, he is intrigued by Jordan's passion and determination to provide alternative care to terminal patients. But when a violent explosion leaves the small Bahamian island of Exuma on edge, Ryan knows his life has once again been forever altered.

Drawn together by circumstance, attraction, and shared ambition, Ryan and Jordan become united in their international quest for the truth. The two embark on an explosive thrill ride ending in Washington, D.C., where the couple unravels the country's best-kept secret: the government will stop at nothing to maintain the American way of life, with heartbreak and sickness for all.

Sounds thrilling doesn't it?? Well let me tell you this book is amazing. I love how I was kept guessing until the end who the good guys and the bad guys were. I really loved the fact that part of the book took place in the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. I also love the main character of Ryan. He basically has blamed himself for the death of his family for years only to find out there was people working in the background to make sure he never returned. He is not one of those researchers who are out to make millions and millions of dollars but he really wants to cure those who are stricken with ovarian cancer.
There are so many twists and turns in this book that the reader's attention is held throughout the adventure. From the first time the reader is introduced to Ryan, sympathy is felt. I mean he could be your husband, cousin, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and/or friend.

Do yourself a favor and pick up The Rx Factor today you will not be disappointed.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if there were drugs that could cure any disease? Would it be a good thing or a bad thing, who profits? The patient or the drug companies?? That is truly an ethical question.

Ryan Mathews has lost all he has cared about, his wife and children in an airplane crash, his career, so it is no wonder he has turned to alcohol. An ex FBI and a research scientist. His wife Cindy, ends up with cancer and he gets her into the clinical trials of a drug that he has developed for the treatment and cure of cancer. Perfect solution right? No... after the trial, the results come back that Cindy's cancer is not cured and the drug is not curing anyone. He wants to spend what remaining time that Cindy has left with her and their children, so he makes reservations for them to fly to Exuma, in the Bahamas, but the plane crashes enroute. Ryan ends up staying in Exuma and quietly spends his days getting drunk.
While at his favorite watering hole he meets a woman, Jordan Carver, who is also a researcher and is going to open up a clinic in Mexico where people can have access to experimental drugs that have not been approved in the US by the FDA. After spending the evening together talking shop, Ryan offers to give Jordan a lift out to the yacht that she is staying on. On the way there the yacht explodes and takes the lives of Jordan's aunt and uncle. An investigation ensues where Ryan and Jordan try to figure out what happened and find that they share a mutual passion for curing the terminally ill and that they are attracted to each other. Their investigation takes them to New York and Washington D.C. where they come up against ruthless people and a drug company who are determined to stop the two from doing any further investigating. This is a story that could come from today's headlines, with lots of twists and turns and with a surprise ending that I never saw coming. A well written and researched this story will keep you reading until the end and wondering what will happen next.

First let me say that I really enjoyed this book – and actually knew I would as soon as I received it because it is right up my alley! Fast paced thriller with a political twist

The book revolves around Ryan Matthews who used to be a cancer researcher, whose wife now has ovarian cancer. When he was a researcher he developed an ovarian cancer drug, Tricopatin, that he thought was a cure for the disease. Unfortunately, the drug fails during FDA trials and he becomes a desolate drunk in the Bahamas. His wife, having been included in the trials for the drug he developed, is his main priority and decides to steal enough of the drug to finish testing on his wife. In a terrible twist, his wife and children are on a plane coming to meet him in the Bahamas and it crashes – killing them all.

Enter Dr Jordan Carver, a beautiful scientist that meets Ryan while in the Bahamas visiting her parents who are very rich. Ryan offers to take Jordan out to her parents yacht right offshore, but as they approach the yacht, they watch as it explodes into flames.

Ryan comes to find out that Jordan is actually in route to Sayulita, Mexico where she is starting up a new clinic – and she will be offering up experimental drugs to those that are terminally ill and can’t afford, or have access to drugs that may help them. As Jordan explains about a drug to cure ovarian cancer that is being used by some unscrupulous “medical clinics”, he begins to think this is the drug he created years ago – the same drug that did not cure his wife, but did the opposite.

Ryan and Jordan go undercover to find out who is using these drugs and how to stop them. As you see the story unfold, you realize that the government may be hiding many things and their hands could be dirty in this illegal drug scheme.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was like an action movie – suspenseful, espionage and really made be think. It was the best of all the genres I like, wrapped into one book!

The RX Factor by J. Thomas Shaw is a fast paced, suspenseful thriller that will leave you in shock! This novel reads like a stop the presses headline. If you like thought provoking, espionage books then this is for you. From start to finish the author pulls you into this world and you are holding on for the ride.”Ripped from the headlines” is not an exaggeration. The plot of the RX Factor is far from fantasy and I was left wondering how much truth is behind this fiction.

Ryan Matthews is our hero in this story. He is a former cancer researcher, who failed at his attempts to create a drug to cure his wife’s ovarian cancer. Doing what any faithful husband would do, he rallies his family in a last ditch effort to save her life. Ryan travels to the Bahamas, with his experimental drug to continue working on a cure. Unfortunately, his wife and children were killed as they were traveling to meet him. Heartbreaking!

Fast forward 5 years and he meets Dr. Jordan Carter who is intent on opening a clinic in Mexico providing the poor with experimental drugs. As the two learn about suspicious deaths and drugs the journey to uncover the truth begins. We learn with them all about drug trials and why certain drugs end up blacklisted by the FDA. In the end, they make it to Washington D.C. and discover just how far the government will go to preserve the American way of life.

The RX Factor has it all. Mysterious explosions, government coverups, and two twists even I didn’t see coming! J. Thomas Shaw relates the story masterfully. He adds layers of truth into the fiction making the reader really wonder what is going on that we are unaware of. Twists, turns, and cliffhangers are woven throughout but not in a get you lost kind of way. Shaw ties everything together and leaves you wanting to know more. I would not be surprised if this turns into a major motion picture, the story is perfect and I for one want to see it on the big screen.

With two kids, I never seem to have enough “me” time. So when I do get a few moments to myself I love to maximize the time doing something I love. One of those loves is reading. I recently had the privilege to read The Rx Factor by J. Thomas Shaw.

The book starts off with a quite literally with a “bang”. While visiting her Aunt and Uncle in the Bahamas, Dr. Jordan Carver meets fellow scientist Ryan Matthews, a man devastated by the losses in his life. After a brief encounter Ryan volunteers to take Jordan out to visit her Aunt and Uncle on their yacht, they watch as it explodes in a flames.

As the investigation into the death or her Aunt and Uncle unfolds, Jordan tries to convince Ryan to come with her to Mexico where she plans on opening a clinic were terminal patients will be able to access experimental medications.

One of the drugs sounds suspiciously like a drug that Ryan is sure killed his wife. And so it begins… The two begin on the journey to uncover the truth. Ryan and Jordan go undercover to discover the truth behind this secret drug and this clinic that is supposed to be offering hope and healing to suffering patients. The couple soon discover just how far the government will go to preserve the American way of life…

The book is action packed full adventure and intrigue, it was definitely hard to put down. If you like fast-paced, thrill a minute reading this book is definitely a read for you.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review. I am not required to post a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own and they are sincere.

As soon as I picked up this book I was hooked! Shaw's writing literally makes you feel like you're watching a movie, but manages to do so without droning on with boring descriptions of each and every thing (something I hate when I'm reading!)
I think this can make a great read for most everyone interested in politics - especially if you love to question our current political scene, as I do.
Although this is a fictional story, the author makes it seem plausible with news clippings in the beginning of the book of similar horror stories from pharma bigwigs such as Pfizer. I found this set the tone for the book really well, especially if the reader is not familiar with current pharmaceutical stories and happenings.
Ryan is a character I loved too - so strongly devoted to his fallen family, I instantly liked him. I wasn't sure I would when I read that he had lost his wife and children and falls for Dr. Jordan Carver in the books description - but the whole issue is a very sensitive one and his family is mentioned often in his thoughts and conversations, not forgotten.
I also loved how humor was added in softly here and there - once again making you feel like you're watching this all unfold on a screen rather than in your mind.
The best part of this book? The ending - I won't say anything about it, but it is not what you expect it to be - not at all!
I would highly recommend this book and am really looking forward to future books by this author because of his great writing style!

What a read! I mean a page turner. I began the book impressed by solid prose that left vivid imagery of emotions brought on by main characters Jordan and Ryan. Though there were a few turn of events that some may predict, the ending is one you will never believe. After the shock and sadness subsides, is when it will click.

Alternatively, the variance in characters and each of their own personal developments throughout the duration of the novel was quite thrilling, ensuring there to be a favorite for each type of bookworm.
Most touching was the personal element that Shaw shares with his readers regarding his own medical battle before The Rx Factor was released. Having dedicated much of my Undergraduate studies to Public Policy and scrutinizing the horrendous practices of big, greedy PHARMA, very little of the ground covered throughout most of the book surprised me until the end.

Honestly there were a few parts flush with medical jargon that may have been a bit difficult to get through but were well worth the slight effort. Truly an eye opener for any American, this is a book well worth the time and energy. You will receive an abundance of insight and have a newfound wariness for the pharmaceuticals we are fed to keep our ailments “maintained.”

Well done Mr. Shaw, from someone who deals daily with a chronic, genetic disorder, despite the underlying truths masked as fiction, I was provided a glimmer of hope.

The main character Ryan Matthews is escaping life in the Bahamas after his wife and children die in a plane crash. Before their death, he was a clinical researcher and was looking for the cure for ovarian cancer which coincidentally, his wife is diagnosised with the very disease he is trying to eradicate. Thinking he had discovered the cure, he puts his wife in the clinical trial and makes sure she is one of the patients who receives the actual drug and not the placebo. When it looks like the drug is failing, they plan to live out her remaining days where they honeymooned.

Ryan arrives ahead of his family to make arrangements and waits for their arrival. As they are about to fly into town, their plane suddenly malfunctions and crashes. Ryan's life plummets to death as well, and he holes up at Rosey's the town's popular bar. Five years later, it's here at Rosey's where Ryan meets Jordan and gets taken along on an adventure he hadn't planned.

He ultimately learns the truth about what really happened 5 years ago in his quest to discover who killed Jordan's uncle and aunt. It's a story you can't put down.

This book is filled with corruption and twists and turns and ultimately lots of dead people. At one point I was getting confused about who everyone was because they all ended up dead and I couldn't figure out why. But it's still a page turner!

An excellent, page turning thriller based around the controversial area of clinical drug tests which could help saves lives in the future.

The story centres around Dr Matthews and Jordan Carver who are two research scientists looking into the possible cure of cancer. Someone is trying to stop them, who and why?

Once you start reading the book you will not want to put it down, the author has a knack of keeping you on a knife edge. The emotion you feel while reading this book is immense, you will feel yourself getting angry and upset as we all know someone who could or would have benefited from a new trial of drug.

The storyline is one of controversy and you wonder how much of the truth is fiction. Have the big pharmaceutical companies really found drugs that can cure illnesses but if released would cost them billions in lost revenue due to not having to sell prescription drugs to alleviate the symptoms of the patients suffering.

The corruption which comes with this suppression and by paying big bucks to influential businessman and politicians to quash the trials makes this a must read.

The author will be on my must read list and maybe just could be the new James Patterson.

When I first got the book in the mail I wasn't sure if it was for me but since I said I would read it, I set out to do so and I'm glad that I did.

This is an awesome read for anyone who likes mystery, action or suspense. the book starts out introducing you to Ryan Matthews. Here comes your first twist, he is a former cancer researcher who has a wife battling cancer. Trying to do what any awesome husband would do, he begin working on a drug to save her only to discover the drug accelerates her cancer.

His wife and child end up dying in a plane crash which sends him into a deep depression. Shortly after, he meets Jordan Carver, an FDA researcher who is busy creating experimental drugs in Mexico, the kind the FDA hasn't approved and one of them is much like the drug he created for his wife, the drug that killed her.

Of course I am not going to tell you the entire book! I have to leave you something to read for yourself and you should. This book is the kind of movie I long to see. There are enough twists and turns as any country road out in the middle of nowhere. This is seriously an amazing book!

Ryan Matthews was a brilliant man, trying to develop a cure for ovarian cancer, which his wife had. Jordan Carver also wanted to help others with their diseases, but was tired of the red tape and bureaucracy of the FDA and others.

When you have a loved one, how much are you willing to spend to lengthen their life? Would you be willing to spend millions of dollars, or go to clinics outside of the United States? For those that have the money, yes, yes, they would spend whatever it and do whatever it takes.

If you are a major drug company, how far are you willing to go to see others fail?

This story is chilling to see what lengths people will go to be rich and powerful, for whatever their reasons, or for “the greater good of mankind”. So many characters in such different levels of society, all interacting in some way or another. Murder, mystery, suspense, cover-ups and a great who-done-it (or actually who is in charge and making the decisions). Page after page of non-stop reading that you just can’t put down. Definitely a must read. Even if it is a fictional writing, you can’t help but wonder how much could be true.

Losing any family member to any type of disease is hard enough but knowing that it was something out of your control is even harder. I could not even imagine how this would eat at a person and how they would find the strength to go on living. John did an AMAZING job at really making you feel what Ryan was going through and how when given an opportunity to find out the truth he had to do it for the sake of his family. This is very important for an author to do because that is how you get transported into the story and really feel like you are the one living through it. This was only one part of the story, you also encounter an action packed suspenseful drama that takes into the world of drug companies, politics and those out to make money off of those that seek help. My only drawback is how it ended, not sure I can be convinced that in the real world the government would be the one doing that harm. However, a really good read that once you get started it would be really difficult to put down!

I received a copy of The Rx Factor from the author through Goodreads First Reads program.
The book begins with two articles about drug testing, and then takes us to the island of Exuma and into the life of Ryan Matthews. Five years before, Ryan lost his wife and children in a plane crash. They were coming to join him for a last vacation because his wife had terminal ovarian cancer, a disease that Ryan -a clinical researcher- had tried to cure with a drug he developed known as Tricopan.
Ryan meets Jordan Carver, another researcher who plans to open a clinic in Mexico which will offer affordable experimental drugs that aren't available in the US.
From this point on, the dangers for the two of them doesn't let up as they try to figure out who is trying to stop them. Twists and turns abound, and the action never stops. The Rx Factor was an enjoyable read and a page turner. I'm looking forward to more books from Thomas Shaw.

What is the book about?

Ryan Matthews tried to save his wife's life from ovarian cancer by finding a drug to cure her. See, he's a former cancer researcher and he goes to all extremes to find anything that will save his wife. While providing experimental drugs, we learn about drug trials and how or why drugs don't make it to shelves, or even end up blacklisted. Take a ride through the mysterious government cover-up's that will have you hooked on this book.

What did I think of the book?

Shaw writes a fast paced, thriller that can only leave the reader in shock. The whole plot of the book cannot be considered fantasy since it isn't far fetched enough to be unbelievable, which really gets you thinking how much of this book could actually have some truth behind it. It's highly emotional, watching a man struggle with losing his family and then only to have to deal with big time government issues.

When I saw that I had won a free copy through the First Reads program it didn't seem like my usual "cup of tea". I was pleasantly surprised though when I found it was an easy read and a page turner. This is the first book that I have read that had a political aspect to it and I found myself wondering the whole book if that kind of thing really happens. Thank you Mr. Shaw for this great read!

I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters of this novel. Well done. It definately needs another edit run-through, though. The mistakes became distracting.

I could see how this topic is very relevent to what's going on in the Health Care Field, currently. You are cheering for the hero to the end.

Well done, Mr. Shaw!

I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked the general concept and it was well-written, but I thought that the story moved too slowly. In addition, I found an incorrect capitalization in the prologue and things like that just irk me to no end, which put me off of the book from the beginning.
