Impending Doom

Rate this book
Ivan speeds through downtown Riverwolf Pass. His heart is pumping faster than ever before. Adrenaline rushes through his veins. There's only one thing on his mind... that thing just happens to be the thing that's on everybody's mind... The Dinner Party. Ivan speeds up the road to the old manner where the dinner party is being held... where the unsuspecting victims await. The manipulative monsters dwell there, waiting for the perfect moment to make their move. Ivan has to destroy them... the fate of the entire town is in Ivan's hands. Latianna, the new girl in town, warns him that it won't be easy. She begs him to flee town without her, but he doesn't listen. Now, the dinner party is rapidly approaching... the impending doom looms over the town like a low, gray cloud. Will Ivan be able to handle it... or will he crack to pieces under the heart-wrenching pressure?

The path we take is long and winding, the road is bumpy and rarely ever do two friends make it through it all. Especially two newly made friends who attend a dinner party that should seem so quaint and ordinary. But, in Riverwolf Pass, dinner parties seem to be taking a treacherous turn. What could possibly be so dangerous about a dinner party? I'll tell you. When dinner parties include blood-sucking beasts, riveting plots, true love, intriguing characters, unsuspecting victims, all written with cleverly surprising twists and turns of unimaginable extremities, they can most certainly put one in grave danger.

When I read “Sly Darkness”, a horror/suspense novel written by seventeen year-old phenom author Kya Aliana, I was completely blown away. It was one of the best genre novels I had read in a decade and the feeling it gave me was reminiscent of the intoxicating vibe I received when I read Stephen King’s “Carrie” a lifetime ago. It is funny, sometimes intricate plot details or character names fade from the memory over time, but you never forget the feeling that a great book gives you. “Carrie” is such a book. “Sly Darkness” is such a book. And I am happy to report that Kya Aliana’s “Impending Doom” is such a book.

“Impending Doom” is the author’s debut novel. It takes place in the same setting as the stand-alone follow-up “Sly Darkness” and the author does a superb job of establishing time and place as she expertly draws us into the peculiar and fascinating world of Riverwolf Pass, a “Twin Peaks” kind of small town that sits up in the hills of North Carolina on the supernatural edge of nowhere.

The writing is very visual. We see the creepy mansion up on the mountain and feel the road beneath our feet as we walk toward it. The character descriptions are sharp, specific, and yet universal. There are nosy neighbors, small town politics, star quarterbacks, flirty girls, quiet girls, and under- appreciated sidekicks. We know these characters as soon as we meet them because the author seems to do instinctively do what many seasoned pros still have not learned, show don’t tell.

These are teenage characters, full of fluctuating, sometimes melodramatic emotions and desires just like real teenagers and we feel every one of these emotions. After reading two of her books I can tell this with absolute certainty, Kya Aliana writes bold, memorable, very realistic characters with conflicting and complex attributes. Not only do they act and feel and think like real people, they speak to each other and to their parents like real teenagers do.

Another point must be made about the writing and characters. Two of the main characters are male and as she demonstrated in “Sly Darkness” the author can seamlessly and convincingly write from a male point of view. Writing from the opposite gender is a very difficult feat for many writers pull off and this author has already mastered it.

“Impending Doom” has a terrific set up and what is called in the screenplay business an “inciting incident”, a strange and elusive family moves into the town’s storied, creepy mansion, a place where drama, mayhem, and tragedy had struck before. Immediately from that point on, the story unfolds and the tension and suspense keep winding tighter and tighter until the final third of the book when the author unleashes a full blown final act full of shocking surprises. Do not let the author’s age fool you. She is not afraid to take you places you may not expect to go.

“Impending Doom” is part “Twilight”, part Stephen King homage, and part teenage horror film, but it is all Kya Aliana, a fresh new voice in Young Adult horror/suspense fiction. She is to writing what Elle Fanning (“Super 8”) is to acting or Carly Rose Sonenclar (“The X Factor”) is to singing, a phenom…an amazing talent who seems to possess an extraordinary ability to tell imaginative stories with a command of craft and a maturity far beyond her years.

I participated in this author's book giveaway and received this autographed copy from Kya Aliana.

I want to congratulate you on publishing your first novel. I just finished reading it early this morning. I enjoyed your story so very much. You show great maturity in your writing for such a young lady and I am very impressed. I look forward to reading more of your work over the years.

My thoughts on the story itself. I like how this author incorporated pieces from other vampire stories into this once. The reference to the glittery skin as depicted in the Twilight Series for one example. I have read a lot of variations and yours fits in very well with all of them. The young man who meets and falls in love with a fledgling vampire girl. Then his desire to save her from her fate and destroy the head vampire so she can become human again. The ending was a very nice touch as I was unsure what was going to happen to the young lovers and his little sister. I won't say more as I don't want to ruin the story for anyone who has yet to read it.

Very well done Kya. Thank you so much for giving me an opportunity to read your first novel.

Many things to say about this book, some good, some not so good.

First of all Kya is 17 years old and (or so I've heard) she wrote Impending Doom in a month for a writing contest.

The vampire plot is starting to get a little over-used but I was glad you let them be REAL vampires. They didn't sparkle in the sun... and Kya you even poked fun at twilight! loved it.

i liked the way that latianna speaks, but i was bothered by ivan starting to go old fashioned all of a sudden. He is supposed to be the modern one!

At some points it was a little unbelievable but hell, why should books be believable anyways??? I had a lot of fun reading it even though I knew pretty much where the plot was taking me anyways.

Can't wait to read something that Kya writes that isn't just done in a month.... I can't even imagine how much better she will get!

I cannot believe the author is seventeen and she wrote this book in one month for National Novel Writing Month ( NaNoWriMo). This is a well thought out young adult mystery. From the description, without giving away the plot, the story's critical climax occurs at a dinner party thus the title: "Impending Doom." Sounds ominous, right? Well it is and it isn't. While reading this book, one can get an idea which direction the book is going. Unfortunately, because of this, the book isn't as thrilling as the title. But that is ok. I understood her process of creating this book and look forward to this young author's future books cause I have a feeling this author, in time, will be very sought after and her books will be exceptional. Keep writing and reading. I cannot wait for the next one.

Honestly, I was excited to read this book and it was somewhat disappointing. The book didn't suck me in and the characters were flat. One dimensional. You can tell that this was a novel of a first time author. The writing style and the layout were amateur, at best. And everything was super fast-paced. The lovey dovey emotions Ivan and Latianna were feeling, was just too much.

I don't mean to be a total bitch about it. I am into Sly Darkness right now and it's much better on the writing style and format of the whole thing.

i received this book for free through goodreads first reads

I have to say right up front, I could not finish this book. it was so bad. the dialogue was stiff, stilted and unrealistic. people just don't talk like that. and the editing was ridiculous. multiple uses of the word "anyways" using wrong words like wondering instead of wandering, shown instead of shone. I feel like I could have found an error on almost every page. the story may have been ok but I couldn't tell because I couldn't get past the awful writing

I wanted to cut the author some slack due to her age. I did try to like this, but the language and phrases were just too juvenile. I found myself rolling my eyes through most of the second half of the book. Just not very good. The author really could have done with a few peer readings and editing. Will attempt her next book, in the hopes it will be better

A good story line, who doesn't love a love story! Easy read, the action kept flowing. Ending was great! If you like books with Vampires, you'll like Impending Doom!
