Entertaining Steampunk listening 🎶🔰

Kali and Cedar continue to fight the pirates and their airship with the inventions that Kali comes up ☝ with. Book three in the series is full of action, misdirection, and violence. The airship is blown up as Kali and Cedar try to take control of the airship from the pirates. Kali ends up ☝ in the doctor's office with broken ribs. Continued in book four. I would highly recommend this series and author to 👍 readers of fantasy mystery novels 👍🔰. 2023 👒😀😡😮

Really liked this one, much longer which allowed for more suspense and sticky situations for our heroes to get into and out of. Cedar might be a little bit crazy, but in a good, fighting people, sword and guns in hand, kind of way. Kali's a bit one track minded which is fun too. They continue with the fun banter and just a wee bit of 'romance', in a natural, matter of fact way.
Somethings have been hinted about the 'flash gold', like it possibly having a mind of it's own, so I'm interested to see where the story goes with that as well.
Alas, this one just came out, while the first one came out in early 2011, so I'm unhappily expecting a bit of a wait until the next one.

I remember after I read the first book in this series - which was the only book out at the time - and how I sat there afterward and made these little whimpering noises and thought "I really really really REALLY hope we get to see more of Kali and Cedar." Then book 2 came along and I might have wept a little in excitement. Not that I'll admit to that, mind you, because I'm not a crier. Not too long ago, I saw that book 3 had been released and I seriously thought about sending vaguely creepy tweets to Lindsay Buroker gushing about my endless love for this series. Then I thought about the creepy aspect of sending vaguely creepy tweets to people you haven't actually met and decided against it. What do you know? There are lines in the stalker sand I'm not willing to cross just yet.

Guys, this series just keeps getting better. Kali's ability to use flash gold - and the fact that she has some of it in her possession - puts her constant danger from people who want to steal it for themselves. I just love that girl to pieces. Cedar does something awesomely heroic and she's all "That's nice. Did you see the hardware on that airship?" It cracks me up that she relates more to machinery than she does to people. And then there's Cedar. It's hard to dislike a guy who accepts Kali for who she is. He knows that she has a knack with machinery and he supports her in her tinkering. The fact that she's a woman and a half-breed aren't part of the equation. She's good at what she does, he stands behind her. He likes her. Period. Full stop. He might want to protect her from the big bad things in the world but he never doubts that her ability to create things isn't an asset.

This series is wicked good. I love the steampunk aspects. I love the characters. I love Lindsay Buroker's writing style. I could read dozens of books set in this world and never complain.

5/15/16 reread - I want more. MOAR! (Yeah, this series is making me feel all the feels again.)

Peacemaker is the third book in Lindsay Buroker's Flash Gold Chronicles. When I finished the last page, I was already pining for book four. I hope I don't have too long to wait for the next episode in these steampunk adventures of a self-taught tinkerer and her bounty hunter business partner.

Kali and Cedar are tremendous fun. Especially because the scrapes Kali gets into (and gets herself out of) read like a Girl's Own Adventure version of the Perils of Pauline. Or maybe more like "Dudley Do-right and Snidely Whiplash"? But in Ms. Buroker's tales, Kali McAlister never waits for any man to rescue her, and her partner Cedar is much, much smarter than Dudley ever hoped to be.

Cedar needs to be smarter if he's ever going to have half a chance with Kali. But there are Mounties hanging around. Peacemaker takes place in Dawson City, Yukon during the height of the Klondike Gold Rush.

During the Gold Rush era, "Peacemaker" was a nickname for a Colt Single Action Revolver. Between 1949 and 1959, "Peacemaker" was also the nickname for the Convair B-36 strategic bomber. In this steampunk wild west where airship pirates steal gold from men who shoot back with six-shooters, both nicknames turn out to be strangely apropos.

Dawson was a dangerous place. All Gold Rush towns were. But Dawson is particularly dangerous for Kali and Cedar.

There's a serial killer on the loose. He's targeting Native girls, and he doesn't just kill them. He tortures and rapes them first. Then he butchers them. Jack the Ripper might have been the killer's teacher, or his student.

The worst part is he's trying to lay the blame on either the Natives, or animals, or superstitious nonsense. In any case, he escapes clean every time. Finding out just how he does it is a big part of the story.

The absolutely worst part is that the crimes appear to be the work of the same serial killer who struck in San Francisco just before Cedar left--the crimes that Cedar was accused of. There's a Pinkerton agent on Cedar's trail, and he's come to Dawson to get his man.

Cedar isn't the murderer. But the murderer is tracking Cedar, knowing he can lay the blame at Cedar's door. And Kali is half-Native. Adding her to the body count will serve two purposes; it will hurt Cedar, and it will make him look even more guilty. After all, that's how it worked in San Francisco. The last victim there was someone Cedar cared about, too.

About that bomber: Kali wants an airship. Attempting to get her hands on one lands her, and everyone around her, in all sorts of trouble. Read the book and find out how she gets herself out.

Escape Rating A: I was happy that Peacemaker was a bit longer than Flash Gold and Hunted, because I didn't want it to be over. I really like Kali as a character, and I didn't want to let her go.

We see more of her background in Peacemaker, and she's come a long way. Kali is a child of two worlds, and feels like she doesn't belong in either one. Seeing that she has made a way for herself that takes the best of both makes her a truly interesting character.

I do hope that someday Kali and Cedar get a happy ending. These are not romances, so that's not part of the story. But these are two people who have had some rough times, and as a reader, you hope they get rewarded. They're just good together.

Plot: (This is #3 in a novella series) A mysterious man is looking for Cedar and a town murderer is on the loose, killing tribal women. Cedar takes it upon himself to hunt the killer down, fearing Kali may be the next victim. Kali just wants to build her own airship so she can leave Dawson, but she never seems to get the time because people are always after her flash gold. She does get to ride on an airship, although she must go to extremes to make a special fire-rifle and rescue another tribal woman in order to experience it. What I like is that she finally got to meet Cudgel, the man Cedar has been hunting since the first novella. It lends itself to more encounters with him in future installments, I hope.

Characters: I love Kali because she is so different from regular women of that era and even ours. She's always wearing overalls and carrying wrenches in her pockets, not caring about what she looks like. Cedar is a tall, handsome, swashbuckling hero who actually likes her, despite her being so different. At first, their romance seems to have taken a backseat, but in the end it rears its shy head. I also like this random old man on a boat who could curse his head off in old-fashioned-ese better than any character I've ever seen. "That boodle of a mother-kissing lickfinger pirates got all my cussed gold... Got me wrathier than a treed coon." Can't get any wrathier than a treed coon!

Technical Writing: It's always good in the Flash Gold Chronicles, never fancy or purple-prosey, but, practical and efficient. The voice is one of my favorite things because it's all Kali's. It's fun to be inside her sarcastic mind.

Storytelling: There is a lot going on in this little story. Cedar has Lockhart after him, and Kali has to deal with Lockhart, too, and the perverted murderer, and Cudgel. All of these people have different reasons for being in the same place at the same time, wanting the same two people. It's hard to make this work in a novella, but Lindsay Buroker manages it easily. Like the other novellas, this one is high on adventure, and manages to raise Kali and Cedar's relationship up another notch. I want to see more of Cudgel now that he's been introduced. He seems like a really mysterious, intelligent villain.

Overall Quality: Excellent. Nothing about this self-published story needs tinkering, editing, fixing up or anything like that. It's very professional.

Favorite Moment/Scene: As much as I love all of Kali's and Cedar's romantic-like scenes, I'll say the part where she fires her makeshift flash gold rifle at the pirate on the airship is my favorite. The flames dance around in the air like nothing the eye has seen before. That was pretty darn cool, and Kali makes this rifle on-the-fly and under pressure. The girl is steampunk's answer to MacGyver.

I love Lindsay Buroker's Flash Gold Chronicles. They are steampunk novellas set in the Yukon. Peace Maker is the third installment. This story is non-stop action/mystery/adventure, with a little romance to boot. If you haven't read any of these stories, I highly recommend them. You can get the first novella in the series for free at Smashwords.

Worldbuilding with language (without making up cheesy names for dieties or fake cuss words)

One of the things that really struck me about this book was the language. Lindsay's choice of words really transported me to another time and place. Specifically, it's the language used by the characters. (And I don't mean they make up fake cuss words or spout cheesy names of dieties in vain. I think we've all read plenty of sci-fi & fantasy novels that utilize that technique.)

Here are some quotes to give you a flavor of the language in Peace Maker:

"It ain't right to risk her life just so you can get your hammertoes warmed at night."

"I reckon I could show it to you if you'd cut me down."

"...it's hog-killin' time."

"That would be right fine."

"Takes real pleasure in hurting folks..."

"...people stumbling out of bit houses."

"...she was no gifted flannel mouth."

"...such birds were probably hard to come by in northern climes."

"Tarnation."

"Where'd you get that sword? That's the beatingest pig stocker I've ever seen."

I love the language in this book. It made me realize there's a lot more to worldbuilding than finessing a science or perfecting a magic system.

All tinkerer Kali McAlister wants is to be left in peace to build her airship, get out of the Yukon and go see the world, but alas, the bandits, gangsters, pirates and assorted other unpleasant characters wanting to steal the secrets of flash gold, the powerful alchemical compound left to her as her father's legacy, just keep on coming. In addition to the latest set of those, there's also a mysterious stranger turning up on her doorstep asking questions about Kali's bountyhunter partner Cedar as well as someone brutally killing young native women. And Kali may be half white and not see herself as one of her mother's people, but it seems doubtful that a vicious killer would care much about that distinction...

Another fast-paced, action-packed and absolutely thrilling steampunk adventure read from the ever brilliant Lindsay Buroker - can't go wrong with her books!

Wow, the stakes were raised 10 fold in this novella, there was a lot more intensity and trigger warnings that readers should be aware of (rape, violence, imprisonment). But as the stakes were higher, the action was equally ratcheted up - and what a wild ride it was. More characters are involved and both MCs are brought closer to their goals, but are still thwarted at every turn. As the cover suggests, we finally get to see Kali ride in an air ship and tinker away! This was the best novella by far!

I really like this series. It feels like a favourite serial radio show where I'm happy to meet the characters like old friends. This kind of episodic storytelling is one of the reasons I love the ebook revolution

Extremely absorbing story... after the first and second books, I took to this one as one takes to a cozy quilt... one that's on fire, scratchy, and about to explode, but nevertheless, cozy! Give it a go.

Adventure in the Klondike gold rush of the 1890s, with some patented Buroker twists: bounty hunters, airships, flame throwers, and magical flash gold. What more could you ask for?

Non-stop action from beginning to end.

So far I enjoyed this book the best; especially the ending. Kali and Cedar are becoming quite a dynamic duo! She is obsessed with having her own dirigible, and she seems to be getting closer at the end of this book. There were all kinds of bad guys; sky pirates, murderers . Then there were the good guys; the Pinkerton man and the Canadian Mounties. I am ready for the next episode.

Not a lot of romance in this one...actually, only a hug or two so slightly disappointed in that department. Not disappointed in anything else though. Another fabulous story by Lindsay, but again, only small. Too small. This series of books feel like a TV series. I want a full-blown movie-length read!!

Superb

I love these characters. Another winner by Lindsay Buroker. She writes intelligent fantasy ( if you don't look up words while you're reading your degree is in etymology. ) It's great reading books by intelligent people with a wicked sense of humor and adventure. The characters are so loveable and quirky you'll wish you knew them in real life.

I don't usually read three books by the same author back to back, but I did because they were short. Perhaps that's why I didn't like this one quite as much? Or maybe it was the more typical serial killer thread (although the progression of the romance was ultra sweet).

Again, just a bit short. It's basically a condensed version of the EE series, character-wise. I like it, but the depth of EE just isn't there.

The third and final book in the Flash Gold Chronicles (so far, at any rate) sees Kali intent on making an airship so she can escape from Dawson City and the cold of the oncoming winter. The gold rush is in full flow, and the forests around are being denuded - there's not much around to see them through to the spring. Kali is an engineer - but in a steampunk world, engineering is a little different from what you might expect of the historical gold rush era.

Kali takes her bounty hunter beau on a search through the forest on her SAB - a self-automated bicycle, running on steam power - on the trail of a human monster killing native women in a horrible manner. She's diverted by a pirate attack from an airship, and thinks what a great idea it would be to get rid of the pirates and salvage their airship - thus saving herself months of work.

Well, it's not quite as easy as that, and between meetings with differtent people who each want the other one taken out of the way for various reasons, Kali eventually finds herself back on that airship, in a life or death situation for more than herself.

Peacemaker follows the first two books, Flash Gold and Hunted, rounding off the story reasonably well, but with plenty of scope for further adventures. I was just thinking there was too much near-romance and it had got a little slow, when WHAM the pace changed and it was a non-stop switchback of story telling all the way home.

I did stop to admire some beautiful phrasing:

A breeze scuttled down Main Street, swatting at a newspaper page too mired in the mud to escape, though it rattled and whipped in a valiant effort to do so.

and

“Are you sure you want to be that insulting,” Kali asked, fishing in a pocket, “considering I’m standing right behind you with—” she grabbed the first tool that she felt and pulled it out, “—pliers in my hand?”

I don't know if Ms Buroker has any plans for more in this series, but I know she's been hard at work on the Emperor's Edge series and other works. I've got a few of those nestling on my kindle app waiting to be brought out and read some time. We'll just have to wait and see if Kali ever makes it out of Dawson. I hope so. I want more Flash Gold!
