Jesus said 'the truth will set you free' (John 8:32). We assume that the opposite is also true-lies bring bondage. If a lie is obvious, the need for correction is obvious. However, the line between truth and error can be deceptively fine-almost unperceivable. The evidence of such deception is found in things like; a disillusioning hole in our faith, bitterness towards God, loss of hope and feelings of spiritual failure. Using her trademark mix of comedic story telling, down to earth metaphors and conversations with God, popular Australian Christian communicator Aliki Flodine, shares seven 'fine lines' from her journey with God. Fine Lines is Aliki's response to meeting many weary Christians. It provides grace filled tools to combat spiritual discontent and disappointment, unlocking of the promise of truth setting us free.
(1) The goal of Aliki Flodine in writing Fine Lines is to lead the reader into recognising the fine line that exists between believing truth and believing error about God.
When we believe lies or have a false perception of God we are in bondage and held tight by an invisible chain. We then fail to experience the freedom, peace and joy that results from faith in the true God and His son, Jesus Christ.
Aliki writes from the heart and shares from her own life experiences. Fine Lines is a powerful little book and testimony to the healing power of God. It should appeal especially to seekers and new Christians. It could be used to advantage either in a home study group or by individual Christians in their daily prayer life. DS
(2) Eight Chapters, each dealing with a binary opposition: Bravery and Faith, Gloss and Polish, Fellowship and Relationship, Punishment and Consequence, Righteous and Moral, Wrestling and Fighting, Rest and Laziness.
Aliki explains how a Godly quality differs from its worldly counterpart. We’ll take Bravery as an example. Bravery is good but relies on self–effort and does not last, while Faith relies on God and lasts forever. She uses examples from her own life to explain how each of the qualities dealt with is separated by a fine line from it equivalent. How easy it is to think we are, say, righteous—doing God’s will when really we are just being moral; perhaps even judgmental. Only God’s work can make us Righteous.
Chapter Four deals with Punishment and Consequence. Most of us know the difference between punishment and consequence. Aliki shows us clearly from Scripture that God does not punish us; we suffer from the consequences of our disobedience both personally and as humanity in general.
Aliki’s writing is clear, and her book is beautifully organized. She is charmingly humble about her own faults and she uses herself as the prime example. This helps the book to have a very personal effect without being condemning. Every chapter take apart the qualities of the chapter titles and shows us the differences between them. She shows us how to renew our relationship with God. There are lots of scriptures verses to back up her ideas. I don’t always enjoy reading teaching books but this one is easy to read and goes right to the heart of our lives with God. LS
(3) Interspersed with examples from her own personal faith journey, the author attempts to alert readers to seven ‘fine lines’ she identifies between truth and the false assumptions that we often confuse for truth. She offers some practical tools for discerning the ‘fruits of the spirit’ (Galations 5:22–23), and avoiding the negative emotions that can impede the authentic expression of God’s truth in our lives. Aliki Flodine's Fine Lines is not a big book (135 pages) and it is written in an easy, flowing style yet it is not a book to be rushed.
Drawing from her personal experience, stories, the Scriptures, Aliki identifies the fine line between a range of paired concepts - one that seems true but results in unhelpful attitudes and the other which leads to freedom and a more mature life. There is a fine line between gloss - which coats and hides the cracks and flaws - and polish which removes them. Fine lines between bravery and faith; fellowship and relationship; punishment and consequence; righteousness and moral; wrestling and fighting; and rest and laziness. Each of the contrasts Aliki examines a deeper spiritual truth beneath the lie that prevents us from drawing deeper into God's love and power through his Spirit. The concepts are simple yet life changing if they take deep root.
I enjoyed Aliki engaging and down to earth examples, many drawn from her own struggles and challenges. I felt that each contrast was helpful. My only caveat is that at times it comes across that one only has to grasp and put into practice these concepts to have a fully realised Christian life. Yet sometimes we are faced with the valley of shadow of death not because we do not understand spiritual truth but because that is where our path leads us - yet even in these dark times Our God is with us and He will bring us to the other side.
In Fine Lines, Aliki Flodine has chosen seven areas in the spiritual arena where Christians are often unclear. Aliki uses the term ‘fine lines’ to describe how easy it is to stray from the truth and into error. The seven areas she has chosen to write about are: bravery and faith; gloss and polish; fellowship and relationship; punishment and consequence; righteous and moral; wresting and fighting; and rest and laziness. Some of these terms are very similar and sometimes the way they play out in our lives may be similar but it is important to understand the difference.
Aliki does a great job of explaining and illustrating these different areas through examples from her own spiritual journey. Aliki is honest about her struggles and her mistakes which makes her writing encouraging. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on wresting and fighting. This is not a topic that is often discussed and I found Aliki’s approach very helpful.
This is just a short book but contains a lot of practical teaching.
