I've bought this book a few times now to give it to my friends as a present. It's a perfect combination of acid and pessimistic ideas about the world that we are living in and a deeply personal drawing style. Brieva's work is always shocking, but I'm convinced that this is his best compilation to date.

Impresionante.

Brieva draws in the visual language of mid-century advertising and then puts the truth in the speech bubbles. The smiling family, the bright product, the cheerful copy, and underneath it a line about debt or waste or death. The target is exact. Not greed as a human failing, but credit, growth, the commodity form and the advertisement itself. He is naming a machine rather than scolding a vice, and that is why this does not sit lower.

What holds it at 3 is that nothing in the book can surprise it. Five issues of short strips and single panels, all arriving at the same place. There is no page where the material could have come back the other way, because there is no material, only the joke and its target.

The strongest evidence for that is Brieva’s own. Asked why he changed direction, he said he got tired of the nihilistic posture of drawing cartoons that amount to look how clever I am, I’ve noticed everything is rotten, and decided to take the next step and imagine something instead. He dates that turn after this book. The author describes the limit of his early work in almost the same terms the rating uses.

The one thing running against it is the claim, repeated in every catalogue listing, that the accusing finger ends up pointing at the reader. If that lands, the person the book apprehends is you. It comes from publisher copy rather than a critic, so it raises the question without answering it.
