An invaluable resource for all who are, or will be, involved in the church's ministry of mercy. Includes chapters on the nature and history of the diaconal office, concrete advice regarding budget and finances, suggestions for enlisting congregational participation in diaconal service, and thought-provoking perspectives on giving and stewardship. Profoundly Christ-centered, solidly based on Scripture, lucid in presentation and down-to-earth in application. Over 22,000 copies in print, 7th printing 1998. Also a Korean translation.
A recommended read... that I won’t impose on you. Presenting itself as a handbook for perspective or new deacons, it is far too reductive to be useful for someone of suitable spiritual maturity to be considered as a deacon. The author on a number of occasions rather oddly dedicated significant portions to addressing Marxism and even Solzhenitsyn gets a mention; in addition there is a large, overly political treatise toward the end—all of which lend themselves to the period of writing (1940’s America) and detract from the subject at hand.
There are numerous well written books on this subject, any of which would be a better investment of your time.
In Deacons Handbook the authors focus on the concept of stewardship, and emphasizes the deacon's role in encouraging and drawing out the gifts and talents of fellow members of their congregation, so that the body of Christ can serve each other, the community, and even the world as the eyes, ears, hands, and feet of Christ. This book is full of practical advice, challenges beyond basic conceptions of what the work of deacon is, and is a sobering reminder of the high calling of serving as a deacon. Highly recommended both for aspiring deacons and current deacons.
Focusing on stewardship as the overarching role for stewards, the authors do a good job of explaining how it looks in a local church. However, I don't think it was a beneficial as the elder handbook by the same authors.
Although written for deacons, this book would also be beneficial for any Christian interested in better understanding the Bible's teachings on service and stewardship.
